If you want the most authentic sushi in OKC, look no further.
Excellent sushi, nice home-like atmosphere, great service and a good selections of hot & cold sake.
The yellowtail and flounder are always a great choice!
I wrote a review for sushi neko a few weeks ago and saw a lot of people recommending Tokoyo Japanese resturant. So I went!
Pros: Good sushi, japanese staff, EXCELLENT appetizers and extensive menu with reasonable prices. You get a more casual "I like sushi" crowd here instead of like at sushi neko where half the people are there to be "cool" by eating sushi. The wait staff is also WAY more friendly and obviously more knowledgable- since they're you know, japanese. There's also WAY WAY more elbow room here than at Neko where you're practically sitting on the person next to you all the time.
Cons: The portions are slightly smaller than at Neko, but hey- just order an extra roll or something you'll be fine. This could also be because they don't stuff avacado and cream cheese into everything like they do at Neko. But for me I find that a good thing! More focus on the fish. :) It's also hard to find at night and there's a LONG wait. We waited about 35 minutes. Worth it though.
TL;DR- I prefer this to Neko slightly, but it's got it's cons. Oh and that chick that said the place smelled like dead fish is off her nut. It smelled wonderful and was VERY clean. Oh and it's bigger inside than it looks!
Hey! the sushi here tastes like the sushi in Japan!
Now in Japan they don't go for all this rainbow roll and volcano roll stuff. Its fish on rice with wasabi already on it. So being a traditionalist, I went that route. I saw some other people order those various rolls, and they do look good. The American in me (which is all of me) even started questioning my inner sushi soul and almost convinced me to order one.
Everything was awesome. The Unagi and Ebi were standouts. The chefs and waitresses are Japanese or speak Japanese, always a good omen. Never would have guessed I would find decent sushi in such a landlocked place.
Check it out.
Dai-jo-buuuuuii!!!!!
I'm not happy that I have to write this review but I feel like there are some serious misconceptions about the quality of sushi at this establishment. To sum everything up, it was bland. I started out with the tempura shrimp and vegetables. They were ok, but very little taste. I followed this with the Sushi Supreme plate where I had 9 different pieces of nigiri. The fish and shrimp were essentially tasteless. This might be the best you can get in Oklahoma, but please don't think that this is something it's not. It's not good sushi. The people here are really nice though. The service is good and the prices aren't too out of control. I was let down here. I really wished it had been better.
My favorite place for sushi in Oklahoma City. Very fresh, very clean, very authentic. Plus, there are many other reasons besides good sushi to visit Tokyo, their menu is quite large and includes all kinds of dishes not composed of raw fish (for all you raw-fish-a-phobes out there).
Went to Tokyo for the first time last night with the wife and our daughters. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. We got to the restaurant right before the friday night dinner rush began and it got really crowded. If you're going on a friday I'd recommend getting there around 5:00 - 6:00.
The restaurant was clean, a HUGE plus for me. The wait staff was really friendly and helpful.
The food was great! We had a couple of appetizers, a pork dumpling and a scallop dumpling, both pan seared. The apps were the perfect size and tasted awesome. The girls split a Tokyo box and they enjoyed it. The wife and I split a crab lovers platter consisting of several rolls and nigiri made with real crab. It was awesome! The spider roll was a little hard to eat because it was so big. Once I figured out how to eat it, I could have eaten about 10 of them. We also split a Miami Vice roll and an Oklahoma Dynamite, both very good. I highly recommend anything with their spicy mayo sauce. The only thing that disappointed me was that they didn't have the yellowfin cheek; they had sold out earlier in the day. I'd never had it and wanted to try something new. Hopefully next time we go they will have the yellowfin cheek.
Overall, this place was great. I'd put it in my top 3 restaurants in the OKC.
Best sushi in OKC.
My only complaint is that they close at 9:45pm.
Go to any other shushi restaurant in town and count the number of rolls with heavy spice, a cream sauce, or deep fried. Those aren't shushi! Sushi is about the fish and they know that at Tokyo. This is the reason they have been around for so long and will stay around.
maybe it's gotten better since I moved but this place smelled rotting fish flesh when I walked in.
So much that I would gag and couldn't eat my food.
It's my fault for going there more than once but it ALWAYS smelled and had fruit flies. Last time I checked, good fish doesn't smell like death.
For being in Oklahoma, I was very impressed with this Japanese restaurant. Ambiance was pleasant with traditional Japanese style decor and window panes. In reviewing the menu, prices were average. I ordered the Chirashi bowl of mixed sashimi over sushi rice with a side of miso soup. Sashimi was of good quality, color, and freshness. Being in OKC, I was craving something Asian after a rib dinner the night before, and I was very satisfied after finishing off my bowl. Nothing overly fancy here, but definitely your neighborhood sushi restaurant kind of feel.
Good food, but not as good as I was expecting. I've read all of the reviews on here and was excited to try the place out then I was just kind of let down. If I am north side and craving sushi then I'll definitely go back and give it another go.
The sushi here is better than Sushi Neko but the atmosphere is not as chic. Price is reasonable, much cheaper than Boston/NYC. We had a variety of rolls (don't really remember what) but the sushi was good - not amazing in comparison to Boston but we're in Oklahoma, I think Tokyo Restaurant is as good as it gets for sushi! I would recommend this restaurant over Sushi Neko if you are looking for taste!
I'm a little hesitant whenever I eat sushi in a landlocked state, but Tokyo is one of the best Japanese places in the city. From the outside, it looks like a shack, but the inside is nice and cozy, with a spacious room for larger groups. The service is friendly, and the sushi is pretty fresh, and not overstuffed with ingredients I can't distinguish, like other "sushi" places in Oklahoma.
A wonderful Casual Sushi Bar with excellent food & friendly service. Not as Fancy as the place down the street, but 100% authentic. Ishi & Koji are almost always there, and you may buy them a beer or saki. The Hamachi & Salmon are always spot-on. The Uni is good when it is the Japanese/Pacific variety, but not so much when it is from the Atlantic. They have a soup called Nabayaki-Udon which is served in a cast iron pot, and it is has thick noodles, fish, chicken, a tempura shrimp, and an egg cooked into it...quite filling on a cold day. If your're brave...try the Natto! The best sushi you'll find between the coasts!
As my first time here, I loved the place.
It was small and quaint yet very comfortable.
The prices were more reasonable compared to other sushi places around town. The staff was really friendly and the food was delicious. I ordered so much food I practically went into a food coma the moment I got home. It was great and I'm definitely coming back to this place. The service was fast and very helpful.
Well worth the drive out there and money spent and I'll make sure to tell all my friends about it.
Actually.. I'm going back there now...
i'm going to say............ probably the best sushi in okc. Not as fun as neko by any means. Definately better sushi.
Great sushi and a good atmosphere.
Dear Tokyo:
I miss you. Ever since I moved to Phoenix, I have been on a quest to find sushi that rivals the delectable heaven you offer. I have been unsuccessful. In fact, I have given up. After a year's search, I can't continue being reminded of the blessing I left behind.
The thought of your sashimi and succulent rolls not only makes my mouth salivate but it also makes me smile. You, Tokyo House, are forever my favorite. I look forward to savoring your sushi soon when I visit.
Yours - always,
Alicia
I was a little worried when I pulled into the parking lot. The place looks like a shack. But, the interior is warm and modern. Browsing over the sushi menu, I was taken aback by some of the prices. The California roll is only $4, but many specialty rolls are $11! You're not getting out of here cheap! Serivce was excellent, sashimi was tender and freezing cold, just like I like it. The sticky rice is perfect! Appetizers are very small, like they're supposed to be. Overall, a very satisfying sushi experience!
Let me just start with my street cred: My husband is 1/2 Japanese, so suck it Sushi Neko. This is the only Japanese we eat. Japanese food for white people AND Japanese people.
Get the Kama...I wasn't going to say what it is because it sounds a little scary, and that is because it is. but it might be more of a shock when you are served the cheek of some monster fish from hell. But I am telling you!!! it is so awesome. It comes with Ponzu (the greatest sauce there is) with daikon and the taste factor in no way reflects how low cal/low fat it is.
Sushi/sashimi is also the best around for cut and freshness (my husband says...I am not going to pretend to be into sushi. I am cool without it) Tonkatsu and sukiyaki also rock. Fried ice cream is "meh".
The staff is always on the ball, and the atmosphere is unpretentious (I don't know that the same can be said for the clientele - I'm looking at you Nichols Hills) but certainly an overall better option than the alternatives (I'm looking at you Sushi Neko and new place(s) on May).
This place rocks - service was great and food was mighty tasty! Better than what we can find in Tulsa! The kids meal is a good bargin - my 3 year old called the kids bento box her winnie the pooh honey pot! The sushi was good, more fish than rice. We would do the 1 1/2 hr drive for this place when teh craving hits!
The Best Sushi in Oklahoma City.
Seriously.
Tokyo has been around for ages- years before Neko or Shiki or any of the other sushi restaurants in the area- and they know what they're doing. The sushi is consistently excellent, the waitstaff is personable and efficient, and the newly redecorated restaurant itself is welcoming and attractive.
Don't pass up the Dynamite Dynamite roll and be sure to sit at the bar.
Easily the best sushi in OKC and beyond. I'm told by friends who have actually lived in Japan that it's some of the best they've had, period. Tokyo has been around forever, long before I remember any other sushi restaurants I remember. Their sushi is excellent, as is their service. The atmosphere is not as swank as some newer sushi restaurants, but it is still lovely. The staff is amazingly patient in helping sushi first-timers to understand the menu, etc. Enjoy!
I'm half-Japanese, and I was raised in Tokyo, so listen up OKC. Tokyo Japanese Restaurant is the best Japanese Restaurant in Oklahoma! The sushi is always fresh, and the prices are reasonable. They also have a great selection of "comfort foods" that you can't find anywhere else in town.
probably the most authentic japanese restaurant in oklahoma. besides the sushi, my favorite items on the menu are the grilled yellow tail cheek and the octopus salad. the food is consistent and the service is always good.
