Indonesian..Oh Sooo Hot and Yummy!
Delightful, Spicy, Tasty and Yummy!
If you know a better place..TELL ME!
My buddy raved about this place for months and months. Each time we attempted to go (I think Mondays), it was closed. This last time was jackpot!
More recently, I have developed a revived passion for Indonesian dishes..especially the desserts. The best dessert ever!! Sweet and Sensational!
God help me because I have no idea what the dish I had was. I asked our hostess for the best. It was banana leaf with spicy rice, chicken thigh, meat, ox tail, and egg. She also brought me an Avocado Drink (similar to the Filipino avocado drink, but way better). The waitress asked me if I liked spicy. I said ok. She was right! The avocado drink saved the day by offering a delicious compliment to the meal and also offering relief for my burning tongue and mouth. The lesson I learned that if the waitress says spicy..it is spicy!!!!!
Oxtail Soup?? HELLO! Beats any Oxtail Pho I have ever had and almost as good as some of the kare kare I have had.
So, I have been to a few restaurants in my life and have had plenty of homemade Indonesian dishes. I do not recall any being any better than this place.
So, I leave 5 stars. If you are reading this and you know a better place, I am all ears. Otherwise, this is "as good as it gets!" Please PM me if you know better places. I will try them for sure!

Good chicken curry, the side of egg-really good and spicy. Homestyle indo food..
Well... my sweetie and I tried Toko Rame today after reading all the good Yelp reviews. We both genuinely wanted to like Toko Rame Indonesian restaurant, especially since the people that run the restaurant are sweet, and the food seemed authentic, but the food was no good. The Nasi Bungkus (beef dish) I ordered had beef burned to a crisp. The plate of Nasi Bungkus was a plate with steamed rice, panang with cabbage and strips of beef jerky covered in hot sauce. The beef was so crisp that it broke like bacon.
My sweetie and I researched the right kind of things to ordered based upon Yelper's recommendation and tried what was loved, but there was nothing good about what we ordered to make us want to even return again. Sorry but Toko Rame was not for me.

I love Indonesian food. My wife's best friend is from Indonesia and her mom makes some mighty delicious food whenever we go over to her house. My wife also makes Indonesian food whenever she feels like it since it is very time consuming and we finish eating it within minutes after she's taken the entire day to cook it.
We've been to Toko Rame a few times but on the last occasion it had been a big lapse in between the visit. We had 6 people so it allowed us to order more food to share. That's why I was even more sad by the fact that we had so much food and most of it was bad.
I only liked the laksa bogor. Everything else was quite disgusting. My wife makes far better Indonesian food at home and the fact that we paid for this was really unacceptable.
I've tried other Indonesian food both here in southern California and northern California and apart from our's friend's mother and another friend who lives in norCal's cooking, I'll say my wife makes far better food than any of these so-called Indonesian restaurants combined.
I just don't know what happened to this place. Food is 1 star but they are always gracious to us so they receive one more star for that.

My Indonesian friend and I went here after much talk, and it was pretty good.,
The service was adequete, nothing special but, we did get our food alright enough.
The food was pretty good overall. I'm not a connoisseur of Indonesian food yet, but I did like the food! I had #20 on the menu, which was chicken with a white curry sauce. I liked it a lot! It was full of flavor and was something that I couldn't make at home in any reasonable time.
Worth a visit if you are looking for Indonesian and don't want to go all the way to Walnut.
My aunt was craving Indonesian food so we made the trek down to Toko Rame. We ordered a whole bunch of stuff -- rendang (dry cooked coconut spiced beef) gado gado (salad with peanut dressing), lemper (rice roll with chicken -- kinda like a tamale but not quite), laksa bogor (noodle soup in a coconut broth), tauge ikan asin (beansprouts stirfried with salted fish), chicken and beef satay, bihun goreng (stir fried rice vermecelli) with vegetables. There were a few items listed as "available weekends only" but when we asked they didn't have those available even though it was a Saturday.
The minute the food arrived I knew something was wrong. The rendang was way too dark and the lemper was way too soft. I felt really bad because I wanted this to be the great meal I had before, one that I raved highly about. My aunt and my mom are really opinonated about food so I was hoping everything would be great. Sadly, that was not the case.
In fact, everything was really subpar, like it was leftover food. The only thing which was good was the laksa bogor. We ordered another of this and shared it.
I highly doubt I will return again. It's a long drive for us and for subpar food, it's not really worth it. I'm really disappointed. I mean REALLY! You have no idea. There isn't any Indonesian restaurant worth its salt within a 30-40 min drive.
2.5 stars. I was so embarrassed that I brought my family here.

Take my review with a grain of salt, cause I'm a Cantonese born-and-raised in Hong Kong. We came to try out this restaurant because my brother-in-law family is with a Indonesian-Chinese heritage background. And I'm always up for trying out different ethnic food =)
I work in Irvine, so battling through the traffic of 405/605 to get to Bellflower wasn't something I do everyday. We had a big party, total of 9 people, so we basically talk over half of the seating space of this restaurant. This place is very much a mom-and-pop size.
My party all arrived ahead of me and ordered food already. I'm glad, cause I wouldn't have a clue what to order off the menu except the typical satay and other lamp dishes. First thing after I sat down, I was trying to order a Es Durian. But they were out... so I took my brother-in-law and sister's recommendation, tried the Es Teller. It was pretty good, not too sweet and very fruity.
There were many different dishes I got to try out. The Indonesian salad and other appetizers, a fry noodle dish, a fry rice dish, a nasi bungkus, spicy shrimp, some chicken, both the chicken soup and the lamp soup, and of course satay! I think that's all the dishes... and sorry, I don't know their name =P Cause my brother-in-law family ordered everything and they can speak Indonesian... hehehe
I live in Walnut, which mean I have an alternative that's much more accessible: Java Spice in Rowland Heights (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Will I come back to this place? Sure. But honestly, not by myself. Because I wouldn't know what's a good and what's a bad dish.
Seeing both Seb T. and Anita L downgraded their review from the follow-up visit (they both wrote 1st in 2007, then follow up in 2008)... maybe this place was once really promising! Hopefully they'll come back to that level.

My palate has finally traveled to Indonesia and it had a great trip! But because I'm an Indonesian food newbie, I can't remember any of the names of the dishes we ordered. So I'm going to try my best to sum them up, while trying to not sound too culturally incompetent. I do promise to update the review with the dish names when I go back a 2nd time because I will go back.
I came here with my sister and her bf after a few hot (not in a good way) hours at the Cypress College Sunday Flea Market. We were hot, sweaty, sunburned and super hungry. So we started with dessert. We had a huge bowl with what looked like pink shaved ice with pieces of coconut, tapioca and other jelly cubes. It was good. The other dessert/drink we ordered was a sweet (very sweet) latte-looking cold coconut drink that had green jelly drops in it. This was the better of the two.
I ordered a spicy beef with vegetable curry dish. It was good. The beef was cooked to a crisp, resembling beef jerky. I really liked it. The spicy taste came from the chili sauce that was piled on top, which kind of tasted like Sriracha - a homemade sriracha sauce with the seeds and everything. It was super spicy... and i like spicy! The veggie curry was the winner though. It was kind of like Thai green curry with the coconut milk taste but with more of a cumin taste to it.
My sister and her bf got the same dish. It was like 3 different dishes combined in a banana leaf (kind of looked like a huge Salvadoran tamale). It had a chicken thigh with curry sauce, piece of oxtail (which was kind of tough), boiled egg, tofu, beef, veggies all piled on white rice and steamed in the banana leaf. Each meat had a different flavor and oddly enough, it all made sense and tasted great.
The place is tiny, with about 6 tables. It looks very clean and the service is pretty good, well it kind of has to be, you're only about 2 feet away from the cashier and where the workers sit.
In other reviews, people talked about the excruciating wait time. Either I didn't notice it, or it really wasn't that long a wait. Maybe I went on a good day? Good! Great! Fabulous!

First, let me say that I'm so glad there's an Indonesian restaurant outside of LA. I've been craving some good indonesian food, but the last time I had some was in the City by the bay. It's definitely a hole in the wall. Small parking lot and all on the corner of the 91 fwy and Bellflower. We got there around 7pm but filled up around 7:30.
My fiance and I got some kroket (potato + meat appetizer $3.00), one soto ayam (chicken with thin noodle soup type dish ~$7.95) and one Special Toko Rame Nasi Goreng (fried rice ~7.95 or so). We both cleaned up everything on the table and I must say that the food here is somewhat decent. I lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for 2 years and visited a lot...so I'll give my thumbs up for this family owned restaurant. I hear the Nasi Bungkus is good. That's next on my list when I go there. It was my fiance's first time eating Indonesian food and she was quite satisfied with it.
Good job Toko Rame! We'll be back!
Cheers! and Terima Kasih!
This place is so good. Authentic Indo food with good desserts. The only bad thing about this place is the hours of operation. You gotta call to see if they're open..
I love this place. It's one of the South Bay's best kept secrets. I've talked to friends before who have said that Indonesian food tastes a lot like Filipino food, but Toko Rame definitely gives patrons a taste of Southeast Asia that is distinctly Indonesian. Just a warning: The spices can make you sweat (but it's delicious!)
My favorite dish so far, though I still have to taste a lot more items on the menu, is the beef rendang. The coconut flavor combined with the spices that stick to the meat is something that I frequently dream about on two ocassions - that's day and night. There's other dishes too that are cooked in banana leaves which add even more to the several flavors of their dishes. I've also tried their lamb and fish. Those were also great.
And I've never seen or tasted coconut juice like this before. It's pink with nice big coconut chunks in them. The pink is from rose syrup and it's the most refreshing coconut juice ever. This is coming from a buko juice junkie.
Make that trip to Toko Rame. It might become one of your favorite restaurants.

Thanks to the suggestions from some of the Yelpers, I was able to discover a place very nearby... Indonesian food!
For me it is always a great chance to try something new and an excuse to go out in the place to scavenge an unknown place. Thanks to the fellow reviewers I was able to see for myself what the food in here was all about.
I was able to find this small restaurant very close to the 91 freeway off the Bellflower Blvd exit. It's conveniently located in a strip mall not far from the Town Center in Bellflower.
The place is very small, tiny to a point. Not really exciting of a place with no real decor to speak off. Maybe a little run down for some people's taste. For me it looked like a mom & pop restaurant you'll see in any town.
Already I was facing a difficulty in ordering food when I got a take out menu by mistake. Apparently the take out menu is hard to understand because the English text is pronounced in Indonesian. They didn't have any translation for what they had. Even though the words are in English alphabet and have prices next to it, it's very hard to tell what to order until they finally gave me a more comprehensive menu with descriptions next to the dishes.
I was able to order:
- Bihun Goreng Ayam - Chicken Egg Noodles http://www.yelp.com/bi... . This was actually my favorite dish out of the menu. Maybe I was able to understand this dish all so well.
- Nasi Rames - Combination Platter of chicken, slow roasted beef, potato http://www.yelp.com/bi... . This has a little of everything with some different to try out. The chicken was not bad, the beef was too well done for my taste and too chalky. They also had another spicy chicken which was OK. The potato ball has a different spice to it that I can't distinguish. They threw in a nice little veggie soup on top of it which was nice.
- Surabaya Style Fried Rice - Spicy Fried Rice with tender beef and egg http://www.yelp.com/bi... . They warned about this dish ahead of time because it was spicy. However I didn't think much of the spiciness. They had a nice presentation of the beef and egg on top of the fried rice. It's unique and something different. I'm not quite sure whether to appreciate the presentation or judge it by the way the spiciness of the rice mixed in with the salt of the egg and beef. It complimented well, but there was just so much rice and not enough beef.
Overall the food was not bad at all and I would give the place 4 stars just for the food. It's worth the check out.
What brings the place down a notch is the slow...very slow...nah, extremely slow service at this place. Be warned about this, they do take a long long long time to cook these dishes. I should have picked up the hint when I saw 4 different tables of people not having any meals in front of them and they looked exasperated in waiting for the meals to come out. The wait can be a killer because I wound up waiting around half an hour for the meal to come to my way which was not bad because there was a couple that came after me, waited the same 30 minutes plus 10 minutes more for their meals.
They probably couldn't cut it if they were trying out for TV's "Hell's Kitchens". They definitely need to improve on the preparation and kitchen efficiency to churn the food out faster. Otherwise, it would have been a better unique experience to try out something new.

even better than Tahu Tek I'd eaten in Surabaya.
Do's : Tahu tek Surabaya , I give 8 stars.
Dont's : Sate padang, Gado gado, mpek mpek.
Nasi bungkus is a good choice too. Not the best but I give 4 stars.
I never do dine in coz it needs extra patient.
Do take out ....
Do not attempt to come here for take out WITHOUT a phone call,
you may end up reading all the old magazines they have (2002 or before).
Call first, and give them 45 minutes if you order during lunch hour.
Service is good: 3 in 1. (one person for cashier, waiter, kitchen helper).

The food is really good, all of the meat is nice and tender. The service isnt too fast or too slow. They have a t.v for you to watch. Parking is hard depending on what time a day. The people there are very nice. I dont know what everything means but the little teenager boy waiter real nice and very helpful. I can't wait to go back. And the appitizers are good. The little meat dumplings. OOO! I'm getting hungry just typing about the place. I just dont like that they only accept cash and that's it.

I had the Beef Rendang and the Ayam Bakar Kecap Pedas. The Beef Rendang had flavor but it was cold. The Ayam Bakar Kecap Pedas was pretty good.
The service was very bad, as we almost had to do everything ourselves. The son of the owner, a teenage boy, was the primary wait staff, but he was busy eating most of the time. The cashier/server was always in the back. They didn't have any desserts available, and it was about 3 PM.

Great little place. 7 tables. 1 waitress, 1 cook in the back.
Everything appears to be cooked to order so fodd can take a few minutes to arrive.
The food is definitely spicy and very interesting (I've never had Indonesian food before).
Cash Only.
Worth a trip.

The food are quite authentic compared to any Indonesian restaurants in LA, however, because it's family owned, I believe, they don't have outside workers, only a person working as a waiter, so it takes a long time for the food to come out. If you really looking for real authentic "close to the homeland taste" of Indonesian food, you've come to the right place. All their food are good and their menu is very extensive, so I totally recommend it.

If you want your taste palette to experience something new, give this place a shot. As usual, I jumped on here to see what was up to bat for lunch today and Toko Rame was the pick. Since I've been becoming more daring and open-minded with dining out, I convinced myself to give Indonesian food a shot. Well, I'm lying because I didn't really have to convince myself since I was at a point of starvation already.
So I called in an order for four which consisted of:
Lontong Tahu (vegetables, tofu, rice cake, and vegetable curry)
Chicken Satay
Longtong Special (vegetable curry, egg, tofu, tempeh, and two sticks of chicken satay)
Longtong Campur Sayur Special (rice cake, vegetable curry, egg, and spicy beef)
I had the Lontong Tahu and thought it was pretty good. At the same token, I would like to say up-front that it caters to a different taste palette. It had sliced eggs, vegetables, tofu, and some kind of light batter that had been fried with peanuts(kind of reminded me of brittle or something of like). It also came with a peanut sauce that was slightly spicy and vegetable curry. I think what set it apart from anything that I've tasted before was the peanut sauce and the curry. The peanut sauce was sweet with a hint of spice, while the curry tasted a little on the saltier side with a tad of coconut flavoring. Although they differed in taste, I felt like they complemented each other well. I found myself initially dipping my tofu and "brittle" in the peanut sauce, only to find myself scooping up some of the vegetable curry right after. I personally think that in order to enjoy this food you have to had been exposed to it prior or you just have to be open-minded in expanding your taste palette. It was my first time and I thought it was good, but I don't think I could have it every day of the week. It's something that I would have to be especially in the mood for.
The other dishes were orders for others in the office so I'm not really sure how they tasted. I do know that the Lontong Campur that came with spicy beef didn't really come with beef. Well, it did but only two very small pieces and at that, it supposedly was a little dry.
If you were willing to try something different because you love food in general, give this place a chance. It may turn out to be a diamond in the rough for you. I give it about a 3.5....

My Mother is from Java and I love this place. It is small and family owned; maybe 3 people working in the little restaurant however they make up for it in flavor. They try their best as far as service but again only 3 people to service. Best to order ahead and pickup and eat at home. Right off the 91 Fwy, centrally located. Highly recommend.
This restaurant has really good Indonesian food. It's small and offers a comfortable eating environment. Unlike most other Indonesian restaurants, you don't have to wait so long for your food to come out. Most people tend to get the nasi bungkus, which is quite good. I also enjoy the lontong cap gomeh and the soto. For dessert/drinks, I recommend the cendol. It's not expensive at all (6-7$ for the dishes, 2-3$ for the drinks), but they only accept cash.

Well, I'd have to say, if I live closer I'd eat here everyday.. but to make up for that i buy to go or dine in for 4 out of 5 days I was in anaheim recently... yes I'm deprived of really good Padang Indonesian food. The food is so good that I know of people from No. Cal who'd drive all the way to So Cal just to eat at Toko Rame and then they'll pack home the nasi bungkus to last a couple more days. Their nasi bungkus is truly awesome (the best beef rendang ever!) & spicy and so is their superb lontong (and they have so many varieties of lontong) it just drives me crazy that they are so far away from me. This is not the typical Indonesian restaurant that tones down the spices to fit American taste buds nor do they use skippy's peanut butter for the satay sauce. This is as authentic as it can get..

Indonesian Food. A friend from my former work took me here and it is one of the rarest gems I've been too. Their food is spicy and tasty. Everything on the menu is really good. Supposedly bellflower has a lot of good places to eat.. I guess it's time to explore.
GREAT FOODS! Bad service... Only one server and she does everything. Best if you call ahead (1 hr ahead) and order for TO GO. They had some of the original indonesian style, and the price is cheap compared to other Indonesian restaurants outside Indonesia.
