Oh boy it was time for round two of the Gastro-tour on Saturday (11/14) to try some seafood.

The place was dinky but it includes bar seating to watch the sea life made into delicious eats right in front of your eyes.

We ordered a "grip" of fried fish tacos and grilled fish tacos. The portions are street size and they reflect that in the cost. They also provide lime wedges and a nice salsa to top the tacos--or whatever you are ordering.

Those tacos were amazing. I am not a huge fan of seafood but that place makes me want to try it all.

Cheap and scrumptious.

I read the yelp reviews and decided to try it out since I was going to be in the neighborhood. I'm a huge fan of oysters and have a very discerning palate from growing up on hogg island oysters. I was not dissapointed but so surprised that such great oysters could come from a small place in a bonita strip mall.

The grilled fish taco was delicious and the perfect portion. We also ordered the 1/2 order of aguachile shrimp, which was so tender with the perfect balance of acidity and spice; my mouth burned with pleasure/desire for more.

The pulpo/octopus tostada was the most tender octopus I've ever had- much better than everywhere we've been in little Italy.

For sure worth the drive to Bonita!!

What was I ever doing going to Rubios for Fish Tacos?

This place is the place to go for gooooooooooooooooood food!

OMG! I had Fish Tacos, Grilled Fish Tacos, Fish Ceviche, Marlin Tacos, and Oysters.

That was one heck of an awesome meal.

My plan is to try everything on the menu and then start again.

Next up... Shrimp everything!

yum yum and another YUM!! Being a local San Diegan, I have extremely high standards when it comes to good tacos!

I've tried the seafood taco and the fish taco.  Both spectacular!  Oh and having a cervesa is MANDATORY just to top it off!

The place is really tiny, so its probably a good idea to come in during non-peak hours.

Next time I go, I plan on conquering a seafood burrito. =)

pt 2 review...

I totally said I was going to conquer a seafood burrito and thats what I did today.  Its a $7 dollar burrito, a little pricey for a burrito, but it was huge and I only ate half of it and I can't wait to be hungry again to eat the other half!  The seafood burrito consists of shrimp, octopus, and other oceanic goodness (in other words i forgot what else).  It comes with a side of rice and a salad, both were really good as well! Make sure you add lots of lime, scoop some rice and add their yummy hot sauce and then prepare yourself for absolute nirvana.  What a damn good burrito! (AND it got rid of my hangover from last night woo!)

I'd give this place 5 stars if they made their tacos a little bigger! I know they are street tacos, but eating their tacos with so much flavor you just want more of it! I spent about $6.50 on a fish taco, shrimp diablo and an oyster taco and I wasn't near to being filled up! But other than that, great hole in the wall. Seating is pretty tight. But the tacos are VERY good! P.s. Be careful on the Shirmp diabla with cheese...it gets a little messy! :D

I decided to go here after reading some of the reviews here.

WOW, this place is small!

Decided to go simple and got a few of the fish tacos & drink. Not the greatest fish taco I've ever had, but pretty darn good.

Pros: Love the portion size & the fact that it was all made to order. The crema on top of the tacos was delish. Really fresh cabbage & tomatoes.

Cons: Either the fillet or the batter needs to be seasoned better.  I took my first bite of the taco as-is and felt that despite all the fixin's that were on the taco, the fillet was bland.
- The tortilla holding it all in wasn't of the best quality. It got cold & tough really quick.
-The table salsa was just so-so, although it did grow on me after a while

So overall this place seems pretty good & affordable. I'll definitely go later on to try some more of their menu.

It's Sunday and I just got out of work and was craving some fish tacos...Now I work across from Tin Fish but I wanted to try something new (and cheaper), so I head over to TJ Oyster Bar. Ummmm CLOSED? It was barely 6:30pm.

Ok attempt number 1 didn't work so I head back again, this time early and jackpot it was open. I got like 50 tacos (just kidding maybe 10, I was feeding a full family) and an order of agua chile. The tortillas were a little tough but the rest was great.

I knocked off a star due to the closing early. Not cool people!

Where does one to go for .99 cents Fish Tacos daily specials when chilling in the South Bay? When I heard of this tall tale, I immediately took off in lighting speed, followed my cuz to lead the way with my mouth watering down the highway.

My wife was interested in the Aquachile in Molcajete, a delicacy of raw shrimp drowned in lemon juices (which cooks the shrimp) and hot green chile, red onions with cucumbers served in a traditional stone molcajete. I have tired this twice in my life in Tecate, but realized if a place offers this on their menu-- then it must be worth trying.

Tragically I have been diagnosed with being allergic to shellfish. I figured just stick with the .99ners and do my best to ignore the mad-fest these women would be enduring. By the time we arrived, I already knew this place was "that good" with a Yelp sticker out in front.

After our order we sat down outside enjoying the cool breeze. Within minutes my wife's shrimp ceviche tostada was served. It looked very delish with it's bright colors and non fishy smell. My wife teased me on how good it was. Man, I was getting upset and wanted to try some myself!

The molcajete half order was a nice sized stone bowl, filled up to the rim with juices and cucumbers around the edges. When both of the ladies dipped their forks fishing for the shrimp, I couldn't take it no more. I was saved when the fish tacos came out.

I couldn't believe how authentic and rich in taste these tacos were. They were so damn good, I needed to put in another order along with another shrimp cehieve for my wife. Stupid of me not leaving the tab open. It's like a baja restaurant here, where you order until you are full and then pay the tab.

After my wife couldn't take any more of the heat of the aquachile, the green spicy shrimps were too hot for her to handle. With my cuz barely taking effect from the stone bowl, I dared to dip in my fork and started to fish out my own! I didn't care if I was going to break out tonight-- it was that damn good and worth any pain for-worth coming.

Luckily when I got home my face didn't bloat, but my wife did point out a break out slightly on my left cheek. I took the Benadryl to bring down any allergic reactions. With that stuff making me sleepily, eating here reminded me of the past times visiting ole' Baja California.

In those golden days where you crossed the border, lived off the fat your American dollar and enjoyed cheap beer and tacos. How the taste of Rosarito's and Ensenada's mariscos (Mexican Seafood restaurants) and hole-in-the-walls we have grown to love, cherish...
and never forget.

Update: I usually come here once or twice a week.  Be sure to look at the recent pictures so you know what's worth trying...all of them!

The fat: This place will blow you out of the water!

The skinny: Keep your tab open so you can pay later and tip them for what they are worth...and tip them well I did!

TJ Oyster bar is the SHIIIIIIIIIIZZZZZZZZZZ!

I don't know why it has taken me so long to write this review.  This little hole in the wall is definitely a family favorite!  Serving a wide range of seafood, the friendly service and the inexpensive prices keeps us coming back for more, more, MORE!

The best item on the menu? It's the 99 cent fish tacos makes you HOLLA! Dipped in a season batter and deep fried, the thought of it makes me drool. If you sit up at the counter, you can watch the cooks make your meal! The fish burritos and the fish and shrimp tostadas are also a favorite.

Since the place is tiny, it's almost always crowded. But, it will never disappoint. Come early or at off peak hours and you're set.

OMG!

Clams w/ Fresh Salsa, Ceviche, Fish Tacos...... as authentic as it can gets.... just the same as what you can get from street vendors down south in Mexico!!

The Broth w/ seafood is so good...

Oysters in the half shells may not be as good or as fresh as many other places, but it is definitely priced right.

I mean you can't really go wrong with 99 cent fish tacos however I actually like Senor bajas better and it's more expensive. The sauce is what sells me. However, coz this place is nearby the fiance's pad and it's cheap it's good to eat here.
Location could be better..... when you make a right out of the shopping center...it's difficutl to see oncoming traffic. They shouldn't have made a shopping center with a a curve like that. Sometimes I pray before i turn there isn't a fast oncoming car that's going way beyond the speed limit coming my way.
The buritos are good from what i tried. They need to have fountain drinks though. Coke cans can be finished in two seconds and they don't taste the same as fountain.

This place is deceivingly small for having such a big menu. Also, insanely cheap beer and still-tastes-like-the-ocean fresh oysters.

The tacos are going to bring me back. I had the shrimp diabla and marlin w/ cheese tacos. These were seriously the best tacos I've had in a long time. The service is also really good too. I can imagine this place getting crowded during the week since it understandably takes them a while to cook everything, but it's worth it.

After reading the great reviews on Yelp, I decided to swing by TJ Oyster Bar on a midweek night and give it a try.  Yes, the parking lot is small and crowded, but I found a spot in front.

TJ's is small; if people are sitting at the few indoor tables and others at the bar counter, it's pretty tough to squeeze by -- but the cash register is up front and the cashier notices whoever new comes in.

I ordered five fish tacos to go, paid, at waited at a table.  And waited....  During the next 25+ minutes, I saw about 10 people arriving and picking up their obviously phoned-in orders.  Some of them were picking up multiple bags of food, so the cooks were very busy.

After the staff turned off their "OPEN" sign at 8 p.m. (and the restaurant was still full), a couple of newly-arriving people still tried to order, but were turned away.  TJ's seems to be the first Mexican food restaurant I've ever known to close at the unbelievably early hour of 8 p.m.

Finally my fish taco order was ready to go.  We thought they were good (not fabulous, but tasty), especially after some hot sauce and lime were added.  Their fish tacos don't have much "white sauce" like other joints, but it looked like their chopped cabbage was mixed with a white dressing of sorts.

Pros?  Hey, the fish tacos are just $1 each and they were made fresh.
Cons?  They're just the size of a regular corn tortilla folded in half and filled -- not fat and overflowing with filling.  And I think I prefer the fried tortilla taco like Mama Testa's.

The other items on the menu didn't seem particularly cheap for what you get, but then again, I didn't try any other items.  I know that seafood items aren't usually the cheapest.

Add that to the fact that TJ's closes early and can get crowded -- causing a long wait for those of us who didn't phone in our orders to go -- and I have to subtract one Yelp star.  I'll probaby go back and try some more items, but I will make sure I call in my order ahead of time!

TJ Oyster Bar is freakin' outstanding.  Really really good tacos and really friendly staff!!  I tried their $1 fish taco, marlin taco and the shrimp taco with cheese.

Overall, all of that cost $7, which isn't particularly cheap, but the tacos were freshly made right in front of you, and the tacos are SUPER fresh and SUPER tasty!!!

The fish taco was about the size of a street taco, but the fried fish inside was pretty large.  Cabbage and salsa with the white sauce on top over a hot fried taco.  Yum.

The marlin taco....smoky flavored and slightly red fish pieces in a warm corn tortilla.  Yum!!

And the shrimp taco with cheese was phenomenal.  Not too much cheese, but plenty of shrimp.

Tacos laid together in a dixie paper plate.  Phenomenal.  Awesome little hole-in-the-wall joint!!  Will be back!!!

Woohoo! This is as good as it gets! It is definitely the best place for $1 fish tacos.

They are delicious and fresh, made right in front of you. The house salsa is amazing i cant ever get enough. Put them down with an ice cold beer, either a Corona or Pacifico but really what else would you want with fish tacos?

I really love their fish or fish and shrimp soup plenty of fish and it has a great taste especially with that salsa. Just don't take it to go the portion is a bit to small for the price in my opinion.

If you get the chance try their agua chile it is the BOMB!!! (raw shrimp cooked in lime juice with cucumbers and red onions with plenty of green or red chile) i prefer the green. It takes a couple minutes for it to be ready and cook in the lime juice. This i would take to go after you eat a couple fish tacos you can take it to Rohr Park right across the street and share with a friend... Good stuff. But don't forget the soda or water because you will need it!

So I went here for lunch today (10/2/09) based on the yelp reviews and, once again, the mob knows their cuisine.  We found parking right in front of the store but it is a small non-descript strip mall and parking is probably a hassle at dinner.  The place is tiny with most of the seating at a few bars that basically outline the counter and front window - maybe can seat 10 or so but if the bar is full it would be cramped with people sitting at the tables.  There are three two-person tables inside and then two more two-person tables outside.  My wife and I ate outside because it looked a little cramped sitting at the bar and the tables inside were taken.  This was a 1:30 lunch so I can imagine how packed this place gets at 6 pm til closing at 8 pm (take note that is pretty early - they can definitely make profit by staying open a few more hours).

Kind of strapped for time so we order five fish tacos - fish was pollack (think longer version of tilapia) - I downed 3 and my wife 2.  They don't drench the white sauce and these are decent size tacos for .99 cents.  I mean I could eat 20 probably watching the entirety of a Dolphins game but three was a good filling for a lunch.  They were tasty and consistent with the review here.

For those that are not seafood fans, TJ Oyster Bar is not for you - there is no menu item that has chicken or beef.  The closest is machaca.

Just based on the great value and taste of the fish tacos my wife and I have already decided to return and try some of their other offerings which are priced more in line with the Mariscos establishments that dot the south bay.

Waitress said they've been there eight years - hard to believe - need a business advisor (hello) to consider other locations and advertising.

TJ Oyster Bar was a quick stop on the way to the golf course for our hero and his friends.  Located in a strip mall with some outdoor seating in front, the whole restaurant is wrapped around the bar.  Two cooks were working directly on the grills in plain view behind the bar and the cash register was sitting on the corner of the bar.  This small place is a bit cramped and could be a case study on efficient use of restaurant real estate.

Surprisingly enough, after he ordered at the till, they even provided table service to where our hero was sitting.

Raw oysters?  Mmm... slurp slurp.

Fish tacos?  Mmm... chow chow.

Shrimp?  Mmm... nibble nibble.

PROS:
- The 99 cent fish tacos are pretty good and super cheap.
- Nice selection of different tacos and burritos with ingredients like octopus, marlin, and stingray.

CONS:
- The raw oysters are fairly wimpy and aren't that good.  But they're only $1.40 and you can order as few as you want, so don't complain.

BEST FISH TACOS AND FISH CEVICHE IN SAN DIEGO!
I drive the 30 minutes from PB to Bonita for this food.  The authenticity, freshness, and amount of flavor bursting out of each menu item keeps me coming back.  Yes, the place is small and can be very busy, but it is worth it when you bite into this food and the flavor explodes in your mouth.
Everything is excellent, but here are my favorites!
  Fish Ceviche
   Smoked Marlin tacos with cheese
 Shrimp tacos with cheese
  Veracruzana Fish
 Grilled Fish taco
 Fried shrimp taco
Grilled salmon taco (sometimes on special)

You are served fresh limes and hot sauce with every order.
My mouth is watering as I write this.  I highly reccomend you check this place out.

TJ Oyster bar is the most hole-in-the-wall seafood taco shop that I can think of.

My friends and drove out of our way last Friday just to appease our cravings for oysters and ceviche. I had 4 oysters, ceviche a la diabla, and a shrimp w/ cheese taco. It was all pretty good, but I was surprised that it came out to more than $13. And the oysters ($1.40 ea) were a little more "beachy" than I'm used to. It really tasted like seawater, and I'm pretty sure it was seawater dripping from the shell. I'm no pro at eating oysters but I would think that they'd give it a little rinse before serving it up? Please correct me if I'm wrong, though!

The ceviche (~$3.50)was very good. I enjoyed it a lot. Just a note, a la diabla means spicy, so order it that way if you so please. And when they list "w/ cheese" on their menu, they mean cheese. My shrimp w/ cheese taco ($~3.50) was very cheesy. it's a good thing I like it like that! :)

TJ Oyster Bar...
I landed at my place whilst traveling' on one of my adventures at Chula Vista..

The food here is simply AWESOME!
After glancing at the delicious menu several times..I finally settled for two shrimp taco...and boy oh boy...they were good!
Generally, alot of places tend to overcook shrimp or make them oily....but this place served it the perfect way...
The spicy salsa went hand in hand with the shrimps..

For a fish-shrimp taco this place is relatively inexpensive (99c fish taco and 3$ shrimp taco!!)..
If your around this area...then DO make it a point to go here!

only demerit is that the seating is a bit too cramped up..

I'm torn...... This place is tiny, and if they get a few more customers you won't be able to get in. The cooks are already cooking non-stop as fast as they can. Maybe I shouldn't post and make them even busier. But...... the food here is just incredible.

Garlic shrimp tacos are bursting with flavor. Marlyn tacos are rich and smokey. Ceviches are perfectly balanced.  Shrimp diabla is actually hot. Even the 99 cents fish tacos are better than most places' $2 fish tacos.

I'm not a fan of the tacos with cheese here, but they are well made.

TJ Oyster's fish tacos seriously blow Rubio's fish tacos away. They're even cheaper at only 99 cents! I personally thought the shrimp taco wasn't as good as the fish taco (my favorite shrimp tacos are from Cotija's).

TJ's shrimp ceviche tostadas are amazing. Just make sure you eat them immediately, or deal with a soggy, but still delicious tostada. I love their grilled seafood tacos too, which are filled with octopus, calamari and shrimp.

I love the hint of cinnamon of "Grandma's flan." Delicious.

TJ's hot sauce hits the spot on those tacos and the ceviche...mmm. I can say the same for the excellent service, even when this hole-in-the-wall is packed by the lunch rush.

I would eat here at least weekly if I could, but I wouldn't want to get tired of their amazing food (I like variety)!

I am so EXCITED that I decided to try this place with 2 of my brothers today.  We had the aguachile rojo in the molcajete.  The smoked chile flavor added just the right touch.

We were ecstatic to find out they had fresh clams in stock and each downed a medium sized clam cocktail.  Yes this 5'2" Mexipino (3/4 mex, 1/4 flip) girl kept up with her 5'11" amd 6"1" brothers.  Hey I had been up for 34 hours straight i was on all adrenaline.

The flavors brought us back to childhood memories of Ensenada on a summer day.  The beers (not part of the childhood memory) added a nice touch.

We will definitely be coming back for more.

We have been coming to this spot for about a year now. They have awesome fish tacos for $.99 all day everyday and these tacos are hand battered and yummmy!!! Lately we've also tried their smoked marlin fish tacos w/ cheese for $3.00 and are worth every penny! They hook it up making every taco full of stuff!! Unlike rubios whimpy tacos. Plus they have shrimp ceviche tostada that is to die for!!! It comes with white sauce and lots of plump shrimp, juicy tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, all soaked in lime juice! Of course they have oysters too hence the name and they are pretty good as well. It's a small little spot that has a bar looking over the entire kitchen and about three little tables on the side. The staff is also always very friendly!! :)

Two words: Fish Tacos
Why? Because they're only 99 cents ALL DAY EVERYDAY

Feeling a little Andrew Zimmerman? Try their stingray tacos or something else on their menu.

Their jorchata is pretty good too, $1.50 and 50 cents for refill.

The place is really hole-in-the-wall.

Try grandma's flan for $2.50, the guy who was working the cash register was telling a customer how it's his grandma's recipe.
He was also saying how a lot of people don't know about the place and usually just locals go there on regular basis.

Top the fish tacos with lime and their hot sauce and enjoy.

I ordered 5, ate 4..I am stuffed.

You can never go wrong with these 99 cent fish tacos.  In fact, I haven't tried anything else on TJ Oyster Bar's menu because the tacos are so tantalizing.  I've been frequenting this spot for a few years and they have yet to disappoint me.  The seating is limited, but I've never had a big problem finding a seat since most people order to go.

Rubios has nothing on TJ's fish tacos. The fish tacos here are amazing! Way better than rubios and they are a dollar everyday! I haven't tried anything else on the menu besides the fish tacos, but the tacos alone get 5 stars from me. Don't expect a big place to sit down with a family because there's only a couple tables and chairs to sit. Great place!

Wows, when they say bar, they mean bar, this place is seriously hole-in-the-wall tiny so if you come in a busy time it might be best to take ur food to go. Unfortunately me and my gf came at a busy time, lunch time on a Friday during Lent, and keep in mind SD has a pretty significant Catholic population with all the Latinos and Filipinos around. Luckily enough we were able to find a table outside that we just needed to unfold.

I ordered two fish tacos, an oyster taco and a shrimp diabla taco. All of it tasted really delicious, the fish and oyster taco were both battered and fried, the batter wasn't too thick. The fish taco was just delish and I was pleasantly surprised that the oyster taco was chuck full of oysters, there most have been like 4 or 5 in that lil taco, I was very happy. But to be honest the shrimp diabla taco wasn't spicy to me, it was really busy so they might have gotten my taco wrong somehow, which i doubt cause there was this ripped up chili on my taco, but I honestly didn't get any heat off of it. I will try it again just to confirm. Also the tacos are made TJ style so don't be expecting Rubio's sized stuff here, they really are nice lil suckers, a few bites but man are those bites good.

I also tried their flan which I must say is really tasty. It's a lil firmer then Filipino leche flan and the caramel sauce isn't as heavy either, but those aren't necessarily bad things. What I like the most was the nice lil hint of cinnamon in it, just gave it that lil extra something you know?

My main gripe is that they serve soda in a can, which isn't a bad thing really but they do charge a buck fifty, which I think is wrong, you can charge me that much for a medium fountain drink but a can of soda? Really? But then again I don't think you can fit a fountain machine in there so you get what you get.

So, when you come here, be prepared to order ur food to go, there really might not be any room for you. Please do order the fish tacos, at one buck a piece they're the best deal I've seen in a long time and they taste freaking great. The oyster taco is not a rip off, you get plenty of oyster goodness. The flan in a nice lil homemade dessert. And you have been warned about the soda cans, but fear not they do have horchata, they were just out of it when I came.

Super friendly service. The oysters were very briny and not to my taste, but the molcajete and tacos were delicious. We opted for grilled fish and stingray (just to see what it was like).  Great value, not a lot of room to eat but totally worth a try.

Outstanding tacos and ceviche! 99 cent fish tacos and the shrimp ceviche tostada were our favorite. Only a handful of tables which seat 2 people. More seating at the counter. Best bet is to phone in your order to go.

Simple, fresh, and unpretentious.

That's the ticket.

Even though it is a small place I have never had to wait to find a place to sit.

Best fish tacos and only 99 cents. (They have made them smaller though than before)

Everything is done fresh and cooked to order.
No preservatives here.

Great place for a quick snack or meal.

Can you say casual?

3 fish tacos, 1 shrimp taco, 1 shrimp ceviche tostada, a full order of oysters, an order of clams and salsa and 2 beers later..my boyfriend and I are stuffed! And all of this for $26.

I thought it was pretty damn good, and so did he. The ceviche was the best in my opinion. Their salsa is soo good too. I can't wait to go back and try other things there. This place is VERY tiny and sort of in the boonies.

Unfortunately the PB location closed 2 years ago so if you are craving amazing .99 cent fish tacos or some spectacular ceviche...you must travel to Bonita.

VARIETY IS THE TAPATIO OF LIFE
13 ways for your fish taco (street size) on the menu + daily specials.  If you like hot sauce, grab a beer & enjoy the house salsa.  Here's what they don't have:
1. bathroom
2. chips
3. lots o parking

However, nestled between where tulle goes to explode & a barber shop you will find tasty tacos.  Look for the Jack's TV place across Bonita library.

2 fish tacos (.99) & 1 grilled salmon ($2.50) = under $ 5 bucks; minimum to use your debit card= $ 5.
Call in your order to avoid the wait & go eat at Bonita Golf Course or grab the menu & proceed to the bar where you can order & watch them grill in front of you.  The people working there are very nice & I highly doubt that they have ever had a problem with their claim to their  Pacific Promise, "If you don't like it...you don't pay!" I love the generous amounts of lime you get & that the fish are not drowning in the white sauce.  The house hot sauce is fantastic & gives the fish a whole lotta kick.  Grilled salmon taco, the special of the day, was a bit over cooked and did not pass my flaky fork test. However, it was a generous portion of salmon. The .99 everyday fish taco  is a battered deep fried pollack, with seasoned cabbage, pico de gallo, and white sauce is drizzled sparingly.  You can't beat the price, but you can beat the taste at :
G%0#&@$ on the Cove (jicama rocks)
Blue  W@^%)  G#!{/ (wasn't that just swimming a second ago)

+2 stars for being the kind of small, independent restaurant that puts its money into its food where it belongs.

+3 stars for those tasty little shrimp tacos at super reasonable prices. Really want to go back and try some of the other taco varieties.

-1 star for the oysters themselves. I'm pretty sure they serve a local, Baja/Pacific variety of oyster, which aren't my favorite. They were a little small, probably due to the season, and waaaay oceanic and salty for my tastes. They would have been better if they'd been chilled first, but were more room temperature when served, and I like my oysters on ice.  If I were jonesing for oysters, I personally would not order them from here again.

Aside from that, this place is really good!
