4 reviews for Tillamook Naval Air Station Museum
Great collection of airplanes, and the drive to the horizon-dominating hangar is worth the trip. Don't bother looking it up on a map--head through Tillamook on 101 and wait for its appearance. Trust me when I tell you that YOU CANNOT MISS IT.
I'm somewhat biased because my grandfather contributed in a big way to the F4U Corsair's wing design, but I have to say that their Corsair specimen was in beautiful condition.
It is most impressive that so many of these airplanes are in flying shape.
Your kids can also climb into several different cockpit trainers and pull all the levers and buttons and switches. Your two-year-old will probably lecture you extensively, however, on his aerial exploits all the way back up the coast where you're staying.
Lost on HWY-wotever during my most recent foto trip, I saw the hangar waaay before I saw the signs. Looks like a huge blimp hangar as seen at Moffet Field (CA) and immediately steered a course to the hangar. Lots of parking available, plus handicapped and overflow on a gravel road. There are more than 20 aircraft on static display within and outside the hangar, and the bomber at the hangar doors was being worked on... as the many signs indicate, many are in flyable/working condition so they urge you NOT to turn the propellers as it causes the engines to leak oil - many oil-pans are seen under many planes.... If you LOVE aircraft, this is your heaven, complete with a mini-theater and visual displays of aircraft in flight. Of course my favorite military was on display too: the F-14 Tomcat. The Guppy was there too, a very strange plane seen in the 70s and I always wondered what that was... now I know! For you seafarers, thar's even a few seaplanes! A very nice cafeteria there so if you're hungry, you don't have to leave early just for eats! I'd return if I had more time...

Its almost just worth seeing the size of the thing! it is a little off the beeten path...but crazy big...
the movie about the blimps is really interesting because we didn't know much about that side of WW2 history....
good varity of planes....biggest complant was that it was FReezeing...in there....also wish there was more planes as half the hanger is still empty....
make sure to look at the F14 and the Corsair that flew in the Gulf....oh and the story of how they got the Japenise Kite or zero was really cool...
it will be interesting what happens when the "other " air mussem opens....
I've spent a lot of time in Tillamook and plenty of it near and in the museum. Great place to spend a few hours visiting if you are passing by. The hangar is all wood (with the exception of the metal roof). The history of it is amazing, especially given how it is constructed and how fast it was built! The museum has a lot of great aircraft on display too. Family friendly and reasonably priced. Gift shop and cafe on site too.
