i carried out about 600 pounds of tile away from the Tile Shop over the last few weekends. italian marble melograno mostly. i tried a bunch of tile places in the area. for some reason, berkeley and emeryville is just the hot spot for tiles in the SF bay area. but this one had some of the best selection. it's medium sized. nothing huge but the tiles were high quality. this is not the cheapest place to get tiles and the italian marble is outrageous in comparison to the artificial stuff, but it's good to have a solid selection of nice looking tiles when you're doing a redesign. if you're working on a budget the home depot is the best spot, i think, they have a pretty good selection and nothing is even a quarter the price of real marble. that said, the Tile Shop here, has a pretty nice selection of artificial tiles also, which apparently are easier to take care of as well.
also very important is that the employees were very cool about giving out samples that you could take home and were helpful when trying to make suggestions. the bad part is they close at 4pm on saturdays which seems, unfortunately, to be the norm for all stores like this. weird considering that most people would want to shop for this stuff on the weekend. -

I am in the middle of a bath remodel, including a new tile shower. My contractor referred me to a couple of tile shops in the area, but i chose to work with Tileshop - they were friendlier and had a better vibe. Rhonda did a fantastic job listening to me, bringing out a number of samples, and laying them out against samples of my new vanity, countertop, and potential cork flooring. As a result, i decided to abandon the cork flooring, and took home a couple samples to see how they worked in the space. Within 48-hours, i had decided, and was confident that I'd made the right decisions.
Between Rhonda's feedback and guidance and my contractor's creativity, I am looking forward to having my vision for the shower fully realized!
10/14/2011 - Well i learned today that the tiles i selected are all "bowed" -- due to some manufacturing defect, they are all that way, so i cannot simply re-order. I downgraded Tile Shop because I discovered that the owner/manager of the store knew about this defect about one month ago, before I made my purchase, but did not communicate that fact to the sales people. In fact, this 'cover-up' extended to whomever built the floor display -- they were able to effectively conceal the defect by the way they laid out the display. My contractor suggested that he cut the tile in half to minimize the bowing effect, and i agreed since i still like the design and color of the tile and did not want to start from scratch. So 1-star for management, but 5-stars for the sales people. -

I've purchased from the Tileshop for several projects and have found them to be helpful and courteous whether I'm buying $2000 worth of tile or a $6 tube of sanded caulk.
Beautiful showroom and superb product. You can find quality at a good price here. -

Wow, what a great place! We're in the midst of redoing our kitchen and I am SO SICK of going to shop for granite, wood, cabinets, tile, paint, findings, plumbing stuff - you name it. I didn't want to go to the Tileshop this morning, but reluctantly agreed since I wanted to get this project over and done with!
The place is laid out very well and they have an enormous variety to chose from in all prices, colors, styles and materials. We made our way around, made a decision (we pretty much knew what we wanted), hooked up with a salesperson, and were driving off in our car with the tile about an hour later.
Quick and easy - just the way I like it! And the prices are pretty good too. -

The service and help is incredible. Doug is a great guy at the Tile Shop. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient and understanding. We appreciate all the suggestions and help he's given us on our major home remodel.
Service is 5 stars
The tile selection is great. They have very high quality tiles and vast selection of materials and colors. It is pricey compared to other places... however, they import from Italy, so it is as good as it gets...
Cost is 4 stars... pricey.
Definitely go out the Tile Shop... -

When tile shopping- to find exactly what you're looking for, you have to go to many many tile stores. Each one has it's own array of available in stock tiles ('cause who wants to special order and wait for their stuff?). I wound up buying tile from three stores.
This store had a selection that was perfect for our old style craftsman/art deco house. In particular, they had a bunch of subway tile styles in beautiful muted tones that weren't offered anywhere else.
I bought a muted matte pistachio green subway with slight speckling that was beautiful on my kitchen backsplash, in addition to some other lovely tiles for the floor.
My only criticism was that they were expensive. But then when you want handmade tile, I guess you have to shell out. If you have a certified tiler doing it for you- get them to give you a discount. -

I had an incredibly crappy experience here recently. I don't like to slam a local business, but really, customer service is one of the main reasons people patronize local shops rather than, say, the nightmare that is Home Depot. Their selection seems decent, although we had something specific in mind so we didn't look around much.
My partner and I are in the throes of a remodel and needed to purchase tiles for the bathroom of our 1920's cottage. Wanting to stick to a period-appropriate look, we decided on those little black and white hexagon tiles and white subway tiles for the walls with a black stripe and a cap trim for the top of the wainscoting. Seemed pretty simple, and it's a small bathroom. Over the past few months, we've stopped in to several places in Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco to locate these tiles, which turned out to not be as easy to find nor as economical as we had hoped (typical for the whole remodeling project, of course!) The "right" tiles were at Tile Shop, but the times we've stopped by in the past, not a single person has greeted us, offered to help us, or in fact even made eye contact. This should have been a red flag, but like I said, they had what we wanted, so last weekend we decided to go with our plans in hand so that we looked more serious. We were ready to buy and it should have been a simple matter and an easy sale for them. We walked in and there was one guy at the counter who was helping another customer. So we waited. And waited. After about 5 minutes passed and he hadn't acknowledged our presence at all, in fact he seemed to be avoiding looking our direction, my partner asked if there was anyone who could help us. I mean, we don't mind waiting, but c'mon! say hello at least- we're not invisible!! He replied that his coworkers were on break, and then shouted into the back room that he had customers. A woman came out and seemed extremely put-upon that she had to help us. When we asked her some details about the tile we wanted she walked over to the display area with us, then promptly disappeared before we could ask her a question. It was downright weird, not to mention rude. We showed her our plans and she acted like it was crazy that our contractor wasn't the one buying the tile (b/c he's cheap and lets us do some of the legwork!). She was also annoyed that we hadn't figured out the exact amount of tile we needed- even though we had architectural drawings that were to scale. Plus, it seemed like she didn't really understand how to look at the drawings and figure out the dimensions. I don't know if we seemed too young, or not affluent enough for her, but she came across as a snob. Finally, we had enough and told her we'd go elsewhere. Then we walked out. Luckily, a nice woman in the parking lot gave us some great advice! She was also annoyed with Tile Shop and had witnessed our unpleasant exchange and said that she had a great experience at Art Tile in Oakland. So, Tile Shop, you lost $1500 worth of business as well as future business when we remodel the kitchen in a couple months solely because of the poor customer service we received. We're confused by the other positive reviews and would have been more hesitant to post this one if we hadn't been ignored multiple times, making it seem less like a fluke and more like a pattern. -

Tile Shop is one of our preferred suppliers at HDR Remodeling. They have a terrific assortment that is in stock when you need it. The consultants are very helpful and have a real knack for helping you find solutions for your tile needs. If I get "stuck" on a tile design I go to Tile Shop and they always seem to help me find the answer I am looking for.

I came across this shop at the ASID (American Society of Interior Designer) meeting through Claudia from Tileshop. I love their selection of beautiful import tiles. I find myself using their tiles for almost every kitchen and bath project for my clients. Their tiles are classy and handsome yet not flashy. The quality is excellent so that I don't get complaints from my clients! The staff are helpful and customer service is great too. This is an essential source for my design business!

Clean, beautifully displayed tiles. Helpful and knowledgeable salespeople who aren't pushy. Lots of parking. Quiet. Generous sample policy. And great tile in the middle to upper-end.
There's everything to like about this place.
If you need less expensive tile, check their sale board for limited or discontinued styles. I found a great deal on handsome subway tiles for my bathroom floor. And they were less than $2/square foot. -

Love this shop! The customer service - hands down - is the best in the business. They not only know what they are doing and have a great selection, but they go the extra mile to make sure you have exactly what you want. I take all my Berkeley/Oakland/El Cerrito clients to this shop only! They stock most of the tiles too so you can leave with samples to make sure its just right!

We didn't buy our tiles here, just the accent pieces, but Omid was great with helping us find what we need. He has a good eye for matching and we ended up with a piece that I would never have given a second glance to. But it worked beautifully and it's so unique. He was very helpful in giving us sample tiles as well,...and we're talking full tiles, not just a small piece. Other stores charged us for them, he didn't.
Great service, great products! And most things are in stock, which is awesome when your contractor needs the tiles right away! -

Excellent experience with this tile store, and a very nice selection too! We bought some kitchen tiles here and have gotten many complements on how great they look. Omid was very nice and helpful. He let me borrow a few samples to try at home and overall, the customer service was great! I would definitely come here again in the future!
