I went to Tiffin again tonight and the food there was much better. This time we started with the Samosas and Papri Chaat. The samosas were great as usual and the Papri Chaat was delicious and highly recommended.
We then proceeded to get the Paneer Makani, Vegetable Jalfrazie and Dal Makhani. We also got Naan, Onion Kulcha and Paratha. I wasn't the one who ordered the vegetable Jalfrazie, but the dish was savory and spicy with all the vegetables tasting well together and adding a little spice where it makes the dish pop out. The Paneer Makani was good too, with enough gravy to eat with rice. The only disappointment was the Dal Makhani. The dish was too mundane and bland and we all agreed that it wasn't anything special. Skip it or you'll probably be disappointed.
The breads were all good. The Naan was fluffly and the Onion Kulcha was great to eat with the paneer Makani and the bland Dal Makhani to give it an extra taste.
That's it. This restaruant is well worth the effort to try. But your experiences will depend on the dishes you get. Its not too bad, most of their dishes I have tried have been good with the occasionally disappointment.

I've always have been meaning to taste the food at Tiffin but never got a chance to go as I always… Read more »
Lately, I have been craving Indian food and this is my second Indian restaurant within 2 weeks.
We went on a Wed night and Tiffin had few tables of locals. Next to us a guy and a girl looked like they were on a first date and there was a married couple with kids and a large family table. A good sign if you ask me.
Tiffin as expected was a great experience. I had their Chicken Tikka Masala $12.95 ---chief recommended can't go wrong with that. It was delicious. It is a poultry specialty and it doesn't come with a side so I ordered rice with peas and nann to go with it.
My husband has something vegetarian but too spicy for me but he likes spicy. His vegetarian dish came with side of rice and vegetables.
What is really cool is that the waiter asks you if you want your meal prepared spicy or mild.
Waitstaff was very courteous, and generously refilled our water glasses.
We had plenty of leftovers to take home and everything kept very nicely.
Their kitchen closes at 10pm as our waiter asked us if we would like anything else because their kitchen is about to close.
Will definitely be back to try other items on their menu.
My friends had a great time at Tiffin last night. We called ahead to place reservations, but really didn't need to as it would have been easy to walk in and get a table for 6 on a Saturday night. (Fluke or usual scene? You tell me.)
The food was very tasty. We had a couple people with us who had never tried Indian before so we went with some basics such as Chicken Tikka Masala and a Tandoori Chicken dish. We branched out a bit too with a couple of Paneer dishes that were fantastic! The kitchen also did a good job on the spice level - the server asked if we'd like mild medium or spicy. I would've gone all the way on the spice level, but the newbies were hesitant so we went with medium and it was just the right amount of heat. Along with dinner we had a reasonably priced bottle of Pinot Noir that was also quite delicious.
As others have said, this is a great place to bring visitors or relatives who may be Indian food virgins. I have had other seemingly more authentic Indian dining experiences up on Devon at places like Bhabi's Kitchen, but I would definitely come back to Tiffin as well.
P.S. I would disagree with the $$ rating on the cost for this restaurant. There were five of us who each ordered an entree, shared naan and rice, and a bottle of wine. WIth tip our cost was only $25 per person!
Tiffin is my favorite Indian restaurant! The service is always attentive and the food is excellent. The chutney is delicious and the Chicken Korma is the best I have found in Chicago. My fiancee always gets the Veg. Korma and it is surprisingly good, even for a meat lover like myself.
Reasonable prices and have always accommodated whatever size group that we have. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for great food, service, and prices.
I love Tiffin. I really do. But they ripped me off and they lied about making things right. Here's what happened.
I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala to go. I asked for extra chicken, because there's usually 5 pieces in there, and I just wanted more than that. I told them I'd happily pay for extra chicken.
I got there. I got my package. I went home. And when I opened my Chiken Tikka Masala, there were three itty bitty little pieces of chicken in there. So I called back. And, after a long time, I was able to speak with the manager who talked to the person. Evidently, they thought when I asked for extra chicken, the thing had to weigh more, so they took the chicken out and added a lot more sauce. So extra chicken means, like, no chicken at all.
So the manager said that he would credit my credit card for the chicken tikka masala, that it would be free. So, I made my own dinner, which was exactly what I was trying to avoid. And, the next day, I log on, and, sure enough, the charge for the chicken is still on my credit card. I call back. He says to give it 3 days. It's been over a week, it's still on my card. There's lots of excuses... but... this never should have happened in the first place... and if they're going to do something like that, when you call them on it and they say they'll make it right, they should make it right.
There are a lot of Indian places in Chicago. I see no reason to go here... despite how wonderful the food is.
Here we have good Indian food, polite service and reasonable prices. Opt for a glass of wine instead of a bottle, it'll actually save you some money. The tikka masala is fantastic! The saag paneer also very good. All of the naans are average and I wouldn't bother with the garlic (it's kind of overkill) or their version of peshwari - it doesn't measure up to the real deal. Overall, however, I'm still a fan of the story, the restaurant and much of the food.
Aah so tough to write a review for this place, but I guess this is a true A-OK. I don't have a problem with the place, although it can be quite expensive, but neither does anything about it impress me.
I especially enjoy their paneer pakoda, but besides that everything else is A-OK.
One thing I have to grant them - it's easy to take a big group of people here as compared to most other tinier crampy restaurants in Devon.
I'm not sure what to think of Tiffin. I had never had Indian food before, but I'm pretty adventurous and tried a little of everything on the buffet. Some things I liked, some I did not. All in all, I'm not really sure what I ate.
The naan was good (I'm a bread person) but the simoas were not (I'm not really a potato person.) I guess I was expecting a little more spice and left feeling a little underwhelmed.
Tiffin is by far my favorite Indian place in the city. The Biryani is full of wonderfully complex flavor and tons of and shrimp and chicken. There are so many waiters there that someone is always available should the need arise.
My favorite dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala. It's heavenly. It's like it has a Prozac in every bite. The sauce is rich, creamy, and tangy. The chicken is cooked perfectly with the smoky Tandoori flavor.
Though Tiffin isn't exactly cheap, it's definitely not pricey. The food is definitely worth paying a little more for than the surrounding eateries.
I live a block and a half away from Tiffin and it's one of my go-to places for company. I'm from Kansas City and whenever people come to visit, we always try to take them to Tiffin for Indian food (I'm not saying that Kansas City has no Indian food, but most of the people I know from there aren't adventurous enough to give it a shot). We always get the Naan, Samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Tiffin Special Biryani. Their Tamarind sauce is sweet and tasty and I smear it over everything - yum! The wait staff has always been friendly and helpful.
We've also been there for the buffet at lunch - great deal with a good selection of food. I'll admit I'm not an Indian food gourmand by any means - Tiffin is probably a good entry restaurant for people who want to try Indian food, but aren't ready for the full authentic deal.
Tiffin is one of my favorite Indian restaurants on Devon. The vegetable korma, mint and tamarind chutney, and garlic naan are absolutely delicious. I've ventured to try other dishes on the menu but seem to come back to the vegetable korma every time. For all you meat lovers, my boyfriend craves their chicken korma on a regular basis.
The service is outstanding. The servers are quite attentive and your water is always full (one of my usual gripes at other restaurants). The prices ($10 - $15 per entree) are really quite reasonable.
So why only 3 stars? Well, it's personal. Papdi chat is one of my favorite snacks on this planet, and I must say this is a lackluster dish on their menu. So disappointing. I can't put my finger on what's exactly wrong, but I do know the dish is quite dry. Maybe not enough yogurt? Not enough chat? Not sure.
4 stars (excellent service and food) - 1 star (yucky papdi chat) = 3 stars.
After finding out that several of my friends had never had Indian food before, I decided to rectify this problem immediately and take them all out to try some delicious Indian goodness. Seeking a place on Devon with good reviews and an extensive menu, I finally settled on Tiffin. I was pleasantly surprised with the good choice.
The decor is fantastic, very beautiful. The place is large with great seating options - the tables aren't crammed together which is really nice. For our group of 6, I ordered the appetizer sampler, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer (which they call jade and pearls...sound like a sex toy to anyone else?!), dal makhani, naan, and rice. The appetizer sampler was okay - I wish they had told us what each item was when they brought it out, and I wish there had been more than 1 samosa. But overall it was good.
The main dishes were really superb. The Dal was amazing, and the there was LOTS of paneer in the palak paneer, and the sauce for the tikka masala was perfection. The naan was steaming hot when brought to the table, and perfectly cooked. The rice was a little clumpy and perhaps a touch overcooked (or it had been sitting for a bit), but it mixed well with the sauces (which is the whole point, right?).
My only problem with the main dishes was that they were served in brass tins that were INCREDIBLY HOT which made them difficult to pass around. I wish they had little handles, or maybe had even been wrapped in a cloth to save my poor fingertips.
Everyone I brought loved every single dish, and rave reviews were given about everything. And there were even left overs! I was surprised how far the food went (especially when served in those seemingly small bowls) with 6 hungry patrons.
For all the food we ordered, the total only came to $12 per person - a bargain in my book for amazing Indian food. I think coming with a large group, and being able to sample a lot of dishes, is for sure the way to go at Tiffin.
Overall, considering the cost and the quality, and since it converted several people to love Indian food (not always an easy task), I think Tiffin is a win in my book.
YEEEAH, WHITE PEOPLE!
Let's get mild. Let's go all country club on northern Indian food, removing most of the cardamom and onion accents of a pasanda curry for more and more cream; let's make our lamb cube-y and chewy, even if it means serving overly-fatty, overly-cooked meat. Shrug. Incidentally, the gobi and jalafreeze dishes were both excellent. Perhaps veggie is the way to go here? (They do own Udupi Palace...)
Service is efficient; I'm sure you like the room. A great place to take your parents--but they probably don't eat Indian food, do they?
I keed, I keed.
I felt a bit under dressed walking into Tiffin in jeans and a tshirt while couples huddled together at their two seat tables over candlelight, dressed blouses and slacks. It was okay though, I didn't come with a date; I came with my family and we were huuuuungry.
We had a little bit of everything from the menu, but the only things that really stood out were the wine (chugged that like a frat boy), tandoori chicken (best I've ever had), chicken masala, a shrimp dish that I can't remember the name of, and the lentils. Everything else was alright. I feel as though we'd paid more for the atmosphere than the food.
Even though the food was just okay, they have respectable decor, service, and wiiine. Mmm.
This place has been our regular Saturday buffet destination for years. My hubby who is from New Delhi loves the fact that they have good veg/non veg options. the price of the buffet also steadily increased over the years, which is fine because at $10.95 it is still a bargain. Our favorites are: tandoori chicken, naan (made in house!), mutton curry (watch out for little bits of bones though) and dessert! Indian style chai is also good, especially on cold winter afternoons.
The staff is very courteous (although they will try to sell Mango Lassi to every non- Indian that walks into the door).
Dinner appears to be a lot more expensive. They have a full bar that includes wine, beer and mixed drinks.
Definitely worth the trip. Best Indian in Chicago in my book. Great samosas, tikka masala, vindaloos, jalfrezzies... Whoa. Appropriate amount of spice and they offer to tone it down if you need. The service is super nice and attentive without being too up-in-your-face.
I love Tiffin. It's got a dressed-up feel to it, but everyone is super friendly and the food is reasonably priced. I personally judge a place by my favorite dish (matter paneer) and Tiffin passes with flying colors.
I've been here twice with people who enjoy their food, but I wasn't impressed. The samosas tasted old, and the entrees I've tried all seemed bland to me.
Also, as for the baking soda comment someone made below, is that really what makes you feel bloated, and maybe what makes you drink 12 glasses of water while eating Indian food at some places? Baking soda? That would explain a few things. Either way, I always like my company a hundred times better than the food here.
My favorite part about Tiffin is the brunch days. When you walk in, you can smell the spices and I just want to jump into their buffet. I think it's a great place to bring friends who have not experienced Indian food before. I brought some friends this past weekend and they loved it. It has a full bar and their buffet is $11. It's a deal and it's delicious.
Solid food. The key to any ethnic restaraunt is ordering the right dish and sometimes it takes a few tries.
The lamb pasanda is an excellent dish, any of the vindaloos were good to.
I would say Indian for most people are very hit or miss and not sure everyone knows what to order. So try the Lamb Pasanda and let me know what you think.
I love trying out the gazillion Indian places on Devon. Tiffin is one of my favorites so far! It helps that I am the lady friend of a nice Indian fellow that takes me to these great places and introduces me to the plethora of interesting cuisine that awaits in places like Tiffin. I had the best samosa I have EVER had. We also ordered some shrimp tandoori and the south indian Dosai. Both were excellent choices.
The service was OK but the food makes up for it. The prices were fair as well.
This place is really good. There food is really yummy. It is a little more fancy than Viceroy of India. So, you have to dress a little more fancy. But, there food is really good. I love their Chicken Tikka Masala and Tandoori Chicken. They make everything really spicy. This place and Viceroy of India have really authentic Indian Food.
This place seems to be great for a person who's new to Indian food, like I was. I actually went with my boyfriend and his sitar guru (an Indian man), so I felt a little apprehensive about getting something I didn't like and coming off as rude or wasteful. This place was perfect because I was able to get tiny sample portions of everything to try it and see what I liked. My palette definitely needs to adjust to Indian spices, but I'm looking forward to going back.
The service was great, the place is very clean and it's just a very no-nonsense kind of place. Definitely a great place to bring a group of people, everyone will find something they like!
I'll fully disclose that I'm not the biggest Indian food eater and have only had it once before, but in preparation to a trip to India later this summer I gave Tiffin a try. My first impression is that the restaurant itself is warm and welcoming....a great decor with a really nice atmosphere. It's classy and not too "cheesy touristy." The food was also good. I was a bit disappointed in the cheese naan as I don't think it was cooked all the way (the cheese wasn't entirely melted), but I would highly recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala, which was recommended to me by our waiter. Very yummy! I guess the true test would be how it compares to the real stuff overseas.
It is difficult to recommend this place because there are so many good Southern Indian places nearby, and that's one of the main reasons for coming up to Devon Ave. They still have fairly good north Indian cuisine, and I like how there's the peep window to watch the chef make the naan bread. Prices are reasonable, and this is one of the cleaner, slightly more upscale places on Devon.
As an Indian, I can surely say that this place "SUCKS"
reasons:
the spices are not freshly made
hence it is really half indian.
HEALTH HAZARD!: Cause they use a lot of baking soda in their food which would make you feel full very soon and the later leave you with a bloated feeling. Can make that out cause many restaurants in India do that..
So far in my experience the best indian restaurants with authentic and fresh food wud be
http://local.yahoo.com...
&
India House, Downtown (for peope who prefer slightly americanized versions). But I still feel folks should try Dakshin,Naperville if they wanna glimpse of actual Indian food which's importantly healthy as well
While I didn't personally go here for a "tiffin," as defined on the inside of the menu, I went for a lovely meal with some friends (old and new) and munched on some awesomely delicious and spicy chicken makhani. The service was prompt and quite friendly, and they ASKED HOW SPICY I WANTED THE FOOD, giving me the opportunity to say EXTRA SPICY oh hell yes. Lemme flavor dat!
One thing that was a little lame was that an order of naan is basically one piece of naan... hurm. But not everybody wanted some, so we were able to make that work between 6 people, but seriously?! Also, the serving of rice was pretty small, too. Again, we only split that between 2 people, but jeez, really? I ended up with a lot of extra delicious spicy buttery sauce that I would've eaten given more rice to mix into it, but clearly I wasn't about to order more just to indulge my gluttonous urges.
Tried a bit of my friend's lamb biryani and it was REALLY good, probably the best I've tried. The lamb was amazingly tender. Yumsters!
Despite the wonky naan & rice action, this is probably the best non-south Indian spot I've tried on Devon (Mysore Woodlands is sooooooo good if you like South Indian). Still making the rounds, of course. I think a lot of people like it because of the atmosphere, which is pretty nice, but it's a bit loud with the full dinner crowd. Seems like it would be a nice date spot, but, hah, what do I know about that? ...My life.
After wolfing down the food at countless parties catered by Tiffin, I finally made it down here in person. The malai kofta was spectacular, the mixed vegetable dish seemed to be a mix of gargantuan pieces of cauliflower and little else. The chaat appetizer was just eh. The sour yogurt didn't help.
I have a sinking feeling I'll be going back to eating this food out of paper plates at a kid's birthday party.
I'll give 'em 4 stars for quality & - even more - for consistency. The food is tasty enough - other places on Devon can have MUCH better food, on occasion, it's just that they're hit-or-miss. With Tiffin you know what you're getting. It's sorta fancy and they make a decent g&t (a must). Anyone who complains about service at an Indian restaurant... it's like complaining about dampness at the pool. And anyone who complains about quality at an all-you-can-eat buffet misses the point of those also: it's a pig-fest, man - belly up to the trough! (I've never been to Tiffin's lunch buffet, but I'm sure it's OK - they're all pretty much the same.)
A lot of people here on Yelp seem mainly concerned with demonstrating what refined tastes they have, or what an eye for the "authentic" they have... I recommend ignoring those. Tiffin is plenty good. Not having been to India I can't say how "authentic" it is, but knowing that India is massive & culturally & culinarily complex, I can't imagine that anyone here on Yelp is really qualified to say that a place is truly "authentic" or not. And anyway, Indian food has developed in different ways outside India - I have had lots of it in the US, the UK, HK & elsewhere in Asia, so I'm not just judging this based on my knowledge of the Devon strip.
Anyway, Tiffin's a good choice. You won't be disappointed unless you're a real snob, & if that's the case you're probably happiest being disappointed.
If you look at their website http://www.tiffinresta... you see that they also own Udupi Palace and their flagship restaurant is in Maryland. Recognizing that South Indian is their forte, we mostly ordered South Indian dishes. We had a *really* great meal, service was fantastic, and the ambience is very nice.
The waiter was careful to tell us that rice was not included, so we ordered that. We asked for chapaatis, even though they are not on the menu, and they made some for us. They were also very good. Sab thiik thaa!
You have to ask for extra spicy if you want Indian spicy food. We did that and were very happy.
It's weird reading the bad reviews of this restaurant. Our experience was exactly the opposite. I would say, just ignore the blue meanies.
Stick with the tandoori and jalfrezi and you will be just fine.
The lunch buffet was one of the worst, least tasty Indian dining experiences I've ever had. Even the taxi driver joints on Orleans have better hot tables.
Unimpressive. Underwhelming. Cheap, yes. But not worth it.
My mom liked it.
Say no more.
I'm sitting here eating my biryani leftovers. Still delicious after two days.
To start, my husband never ate Indian food before I imported him to Chicago. Since I live so close to the Devon/Western area I have always had a wide assortment to choose from and different styles to try. When he first started coming to town, I took him to Moti Mahal, as it was my first Indian food and I thought a nice introduction to a food he'd never tried. Well, he really liked it. I was a bit crushed when they closed because it was my stand-by Indian food and they delivered - which is really a blessing to lazy punks like me.
Tiffin appeared to me one day driving down Devon and I just went in and ordered up a storm of my usual favourites. I was happy to find another "stand-by" place, I just need to order ahead and do pick-up now, they are very nice on the phone too if just a bit distracted.
Just a smattering of my last efforts there....
Are you hungry? Get the Tiffin Assorted Appetizer, wow what did they do to that cauliflower? It was insane. Their samosas are really good and just the right size. The chicken tikka will knock your socks off. I love their Poori, I still miss M.M.'s "Bhatura", but this Poori is just about perfect. I loves me some fried bread. I left a star off because though they are nice, they always seem to mess ONE thing up in every order. This time I ordered the Akbari Biryani, but we got the Lucknowi Biryani and were charged for the lamb, not the chicken. It is delicious, but that sort of thing is annoying.
I have enjoyed their Vindaloo before. Though, nothing is going to taste right to me after being sort of obsessed with how M.M. used to make it. So, I try to stay away from it to avoid the nostalgia and comparison trip. It's not TIFFEN'S fault though, right? My husband also loves their masala so much that I'm certain you could cover reconstituted cardboard with it and he'd still tell you it was absolutely the BEST reconstituted cardboard ever! Poor dear though, the night we ordered he didn't feel well after we ate and it turned out he was having some sort of horrible allergic reaction to something we ate. His entire chest turned into welts and hives and his tongue felt funny. We'll have to figure out what he was allergic to, because I'm pretty sure that he likes the food alot, but not enough to suffer through another reaction like that!!
I think I'm going to try some seafood the next time, I'll let you know!
My friend, Heena, took me here as an introduction to Indian food. It was delicious!!
First, I was very impressed by the decor of the place- the ceiling art has a Mumbai feel to it- very nice. We sat in the back corner, which allowed for greater privacy, a nice view into the naan making area but we did not get as much attention from the servers.
We ordered the tiki masala, the ribs from the tandoor menu, a couple of plates of naan and a vegetable dish that I cannot remember the name of.
The chicken tiki masala was delicious- perfect spices, creamy- can I buy a bucket?
The ribs were cooked medium-rare and we had to send them back. They came back cooked PERFECTLY and we chowed them down with the onions. I love how they bring out some of the dishes and they are literally sizzlin' hot!
The vegetable dish was just ok, I think I was mesmerized by flavors in the chicken tiki masala though.
You must check this place out. Food is great, the staff is very friendly and accommodating- they event held onto our leftovers while we went across the street to get our eyebrows threaded!
I also tried the seeds you're supposed to eat after a meal they had at the bar. Make sure you eat the seeds from the container with the little colorful sugar drops- I took the seeds from the seed-only container the first time and they were not so good.
Came here for lunch buffet at about 2pm on a weekday. Even though it was near the end of the lunch, the servers were very nice and attentive.
All of the buffet choices were pretty standard. I don't eat a lot of meat and there seemed to be a lot of chicken choices and less of the lentils and veggies that I expected. they did have samosas on the buffet, which some places don't. I've definitely had better though.
The tandoori chicken served sizzling on the table was included with the buffet and I heard was really good.
It is a nice looking place. The tandoori chicken was excellent and the samosas were pretty good. The waitstaff is very attentive and i found the price very reasonable for the quality of food. It was a very good experience and I will definitely be back.
It appears Tiffin on Yelp attracts hipsters like flies. I'm so sorry the upscale ambiance ruined the experience for all of you who think good food can only be served on plastic table covers while sitting in patio furniture. You poor dears. It must have been so agonizingly bourgeois.
My Indian friends (from India, not like you know, Native Americans) love Tiffin. I was introduced to it by a Sri Lankan and am typically invited by Indian friends who have only lived here a few years. More importantly, the food tastes great. Not spicy enough? Hear's an insider tip: order it extra spicy! That's what I did last night and it was both delicious and ridiculously painful.
Note to people: if you see more non-Indians eating at an Indian restaurant compared to Indians, DO NOT GO THERE!! Tiffin is such a place. I went there for the only reason that they serve cocktails. I am not sure if there is any other place on Devon that serves alcohol.
The food is bland at best. I call it "americanized Indian food". The cocktails are not any good either. It is always suspicious when most other places on Devon are filled with Indians except for Tiffin. Why do you think that is the case?
I do not recommend this place. The two stars are for cleanliness and serving alcohol.
The food was good, but in an area where so much of the food is great, it might be better to wander. Good for out-of-towners who want to go to Devon but might not be ready for a full-on authentic experience. This place caters a bit to Westerners, including serving beer and wine.
As spice addicts, we ordered one of the items designated as "hot" on the menu (Chicken Jalfrazie) which was mildly spicy, but could have been hotter. Don't be afraid to request it with extra spiciness.
The atmosphere is nice although the multicolored sconces were a bit "disco." The Mr. liked being able to see into the kitchen through a window that allowed views of cooks skewering things on long kebabs. The room is big enough and well-spaced enough that even though there were crying babies in the room with us, they did not significantly detract from our dining experience. The Ms., notoriously sensitive to such distractions, "barely noticed them."
Tiffin seems to be getting much better reviews than it deserves. Kya bakwaas! I've only eaten here once, but the South Asian Students Assosiation (SASA) at the U of C caters from here, so I eat their food once a month (hey, it's free). I'm happy that I'm not paying for it. Maybe I was spoiled from living in Delhi for some time, but even Rajun Cajun in Hyde Park is better. I don't know what it is, but something about every single dish is consistently not right. For example, the greens in the palak paneer never seemed to be properly pureed, black dahl not creamy enough, the sauce in chicken butter masala never thick enough, and the gulab jamun ARE SERVED COLD WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?!? The service is about the same as I've had at every Indian restaurant in the USA I've ever been to: prompt and courteous. It's a little overpriced, considering that it's really not that great. Skip it.
