pretty decent chinese fusion vegan food. this place has been around for at least 10 years as far as i can remember the first time i ate here. the no onion and garlic in the cooking still works for them. they don't use msg, white sugar, and preservatives which the average health conscious person can relate to, but this place also avoids using onion and garlic because it is believed that it will block up organ function and cause toxins to accumulate in the body. wehter you believe in that or not the food is pretty decent.
the food is good, but nothing special enough to have me trek all the way down here just to eat asian fusion (i'm not crazy about fusion). the dumplings are ok, if you really like thick dumpling skins then these are the ones for you. the tofu dishes are pretty good. everything is really fresh and you can taste it.
its a small place but adequate. the chinese traditional music and classical music is nice. the taoist art and symbology decorating the walls is pretty cool. i like their philosophy and i like the friendly cantonese staff. i'm glad to see them still going strong in the LES.
Small cozy vegan Chinese place near Bluestockings Books and the New Museum. We've been here a few times and while it's not our most regular of haunts we always have enjoyed it. The udon noodles in curry peanut sauce is thick, smooth and flavorful but may be heavy for some tastes - if that's you, try something along the lines of t9- five treasures with gluten and Peking sauce. The best part is the large selection of vegan items with varied proteins (gluten, soy slices, tofu, veggie ham etc) in different sauces (Peking, sweet n sour, curry, szechuan, etc.).
The appetizers are good but nothing special, including steamed dumplings and spring rolls. The desserts are good, in that I-could-make-this-at-home-but-I'm-glad-I-didn't-ha ve-to, including steamed taro bun and sesame bum, and the banana sundae. The cakes are probably more special treats, and they always look good, we've just never tried one.
Appetizers in the $4-$6 range, entrees frm $8-$11, and desserts from $1.50-$6.
Thumbs up!
Cute little hole in the wall vegan joint that's good for a quick afternoon bite whilst strolling the LES. not a a terribly romantic place but it gets the job done if you are looking to save money and eat vegan. The seaweed wraps were great. Got a huge bowl of udon soup- i told them 'light on the noodles, more veggies please!' and was so pleased to see they actually listened! Soup was fine, bland but healthy.
minus one star because of no siricha-
One of the few places in NYC where a lot of meals are prepared in the Saatvik manner. They do not use any onions or garlic in the establishment.
There are really excellent sandwiches and noodles available. The fat japanese noodles are very filling and both times I ordered that dish, I couldn't finish it in one meal. I had to take it away.
The location is perfect--very quiet, mellow and casual. The guy who takes your order is probably the same one who delivers the food and owns the place. I've never asked but I'm glad I finally went into this place after 5 years of just passing it by.
Tien Garden has the best cold sesame noodles I've ever had. I find myself craving them and will make the trip down to LES just to get them. I would also recommend the Special Nuggets With Peanut Curry Sauce which are very very tasty. This place is pleasant, never packed, and the food is really good.
i am staying on orchard off of houston and everyday i look around for new places to eat. i happened to go one street over and there it was: TIEN GARDEN. i decided to try it out. I had the buddha delight (?) with rice. maybe it was a bland choice to begin with but although it was good, it wasnt anything to write home about. my dish came with a lightly fried tofu, baby bokchoy, and mushrooms. it was decent, but i felt like it was something i could have made at home, and maybe could have made it better. it is a small place but it was fine. there werent too many people inside and the man working was pretty attentive.
i would have liked to have tried some other stuff but eh, maybe next time. i thought for the money, i could have gotten something better.
but again, nothing wrong with the place
Tiengarden had slipped out of my tofu-rotation for awhile. I used to order from there all the time and then grew tired of it. But it resurfaced on my radar and I just got some take-out tonight and it was VERY good.
My all-time favs:
10. Crispy Gluten with B B Q Sauce & Hot Sauce*
S10. Cold Sesame Noodles With Seitan Strips, Bean Sprouts, Carrots, Cucumbers In a Light Curry Peanut Sauce
They make some mean seitan!!
Much better for take-out. Delivery often takes a long time and eat-in lacks a bit of charm (possibly the most bizarre bathroom I have ever seen).
Tiengarden seemed like an appropriate nearby place to eat after buying vegan shoes at MooShoes, and it was.
I ordered the spring rolls, seitan innovation, and mocha cake. The spring rolls were fine, although they didn't serve any sort of dipping sauce. The main course was good, especially the seitan, but I had no idea what to do with the mound of rice on the side: it was too dry to eat by itself but the dish wasn't one of those that is drowning in its own liquid and asking for you to mix in rice. The mocha cake was good, especially since it came out warm.
By the way, Tiengarden prides itself on being free of the "five impurities" (garlic, onion, leeks, shallot, and tobacco). I'm all in favor of my food being prepared minus the tobacco, but I'm the sort of person who puts garlic and onions on cereal and soymilk, so the lack of those was annoying. As good as the seitan innovation was, it would have been better a little less "pure."
I was amazed by this place. Loved the Seitan Innovation and the pumpkin pie (although it could have been a bit sweeter). I visited after getting delivery and the food was so good that when I decided to go in person another time, I was shocked to discover it was NOT a fancy pants restaurant but the exact opposite. Don't be turned off by the budget third world-esque decor and the more than bizarre bathroom, the food is the thing! I much prefer this place over Wild Ginger and Gobo. The food at Tien Garden is pure and simple and delicious and not heavy and sweet like the two mentioned above. And try the dessert!
great if you are staying in. The decor is so vegan. I dont think a single animal died in the creation of this wonderful hole in the wall.
Get a menu and call em up.
really good, healthy, happy, wonderful food.
I'm not being very generous here. It's between a three and a four.
A small clean hole in the wall vegan Chinese restaurant. I went with a friend who's been going here for years and the staff were very friendly.
I have to start getting serious about this reviewing stuff and try and remember the dishes but for an appetizer we had fried Tofu wrapped in Nori seaweed. Served with lemon and spicy sauce I think this was the best dish. It really was good. Then we shared two entrees: the string beans and the bok choy. Both were good and tasted fresh accompanied by some delicious rice. Finally we splurged on the chocolate and walnut cake but actually received the double chocolate cake. We didn't seem to mind the mistake. The cake was slightly warmed to melt the chocolate inside and was very moist. I don't have a strong sweet tooth so I liked this cake but I suspect many would find it lacking compared with other double chocolate creations you find in the city.
Cheap tasty food in a small friendly space.
3.5 stars. It's a nice and quiet place to stay zen. It's more like a vegetarian Chinese restaurant, with much healthier choices than you'd find in Chinatown. The staff is nice and understanding. I was boring - just had a steamed veggie plate, but I LOVED the mixed grain rice. Wish they'd throw in some beans for protein, although you can order another entree with tofu, but of course, with added cost. My friend got the noodle soup (extra buck for buckwheat soba though) and the portion was pretty large, with plenty of fried tofu and mushrooms. The menu resembles Zen Palate or Gobo. If you're looking for a no-frill, small atmosphere, then swing by for some healthy eats. They're opened 7 days now.
I want to give this place a better review, but the entrees are hit and miss.
Anything with wheat gluten can be undercooked and odd. The tofu stuff is okay. The turnip cakes kick ass.
I love the overly perky hippy chick waitress with the dreads.
Clean, hold-in-the-wall vegan Chinese restaurant.
The food was yummy, although they can lay off of the oil a little bit. We had the seitan with eggplant - spicy and yummy, the lotus wraps, and the special with tofu and veggies. They are very tofu-heavy here, so if you don't eat tofu (like me) then ask them to substitute for seitan.
This is located in the Lower East Side, so not convenient for me to go to most of the time. You can get good vegan food elsewhere. If I'm in the neighborhood, I'll go.
There really isn't any ambience here, but good place for take out.
so this place was okay. nice selection, moderate prices, but the gentleman misheard our order and we ended up getting the wrong dish. my partner and i do not like to waste food so we kept it and just ate it, but ended up being hungry an hour later because it was all vegetables.
the atmosphere is nice and the people who frequent it seem to be nice enough. overall it is a good place to grab a quick bite, but i think there are more interesting places out there for the same price or less.
Clean, fresh, good - but Tien Garden has lost some of it's special uniqueness. The menu used to have many more exciting options, but they have cut it down to simple basics like stir-fried vegetables with brown rice and tofu. These are things one could easily make at home. While there are still a lot of appetizer choices, Tien is no longer "something to write home about". I used to go once a week...now I will only go if I am in the area and need something decent.
i have ALWAYS loved this place. so tasty, portions aren't too big, and everything is soooo healthy. takeout is extremely easy here too.
Alright, so this could be the quintessential vegan hole in the wall. The ambiance is not happening, but the food is. I like this place. It's very no nonsense, and absolutely no frills (although the music was kinda nice). But the menu is wonderfully diverse, and anything you order will make you happy and satisfied. You should go.
This place is so hit or miss. Yes it's vegan, and relatvely cheap, but sometimes it's cheap in flavor, too. There's better vegan out there, and definitly better udon noodles.
wholesome deliciousness. satisfying. will please omnivores, too. more flavorful than most vegan restaurants; the seitan dishes are particularly toothsome. down-to-earth, mom-and-pops atmosphere offer a nice, cozy accompaniment to each tasty bite.
Vegan Restaurant located in Lower East Side in NYC. It is resonable price and I like it.
the waitstaff is friendly and the food is affordable. they serve up some of the best asain vegan food around. start with a bowl of wanton soup and then try the udon noodles with peanut sauce and seitan.
The food is pretty ordinary for the most part. I have to say that the fried seitan chunks appetizer is really pretty great though. Some of the main dishes are hit or miss. The real reason that I keep going back is the service. The people that work there are so mellow and accomodating. It's always fun to talk to them and they are always attentive and friendly. Plus, where else can you get a 3 course vegan meal for two for under $30?
this place is delish'!!! veggie food often gives food a bland name but not here. i have becvome a regular. the food is all just amazing.
