I'm so glad that we decided to spend the day at this festival before the elite event.  We saw some great movies, the best of which was probably "The War on Democracy", though I really liked "Johan" as well.

There was a mix up with our tickets...but they handled it very well.  They had caught the mix up and explained it to us as soon as we got there.  They never made us feel like it was our fault...and what could have been a big problem wasn't.  In my opinion, the way that you handle a problem like this is an indicator of how well you are running an event...and they did a great job!

I think we'll definitely head back there next year.

I can't imagine a Film Festival being criticized for showing bad movies, unless all the movies are across the board horrible.  The marquee should read something like this:

NOW SHOWING!!

Showgirls
Ishtar
Troop Beverly Hills
Electric Boogaloo: The Final Showdown
The Blue Lagoon: The Skin Cancer Years

Otherwise, Film Festivals should all get a slide on showing one stinker or two out of five or even ten.  There's nothing wrong with trying to expose people to new filmmakers that wouldn't normally get a lot of exposure.

We managed to see a late-night showing of American Fork, produced by Jeremy Coon, the same person who brought us that quirky independent, Napoleon Dynamite.

It was not my kind of film, I must admit.  I wasn't drawn in by the plight of a near 400 pound man-child still living at home with his mother and working at a local grocery store in a small town in Utah.

However, it definitely inspired the indie film spirit in me.  I love the underdogs, even if they're all at once disturbing, unsettling, unattractive, unappealing, and kind of nauseating.

But don't take my word for it.  I'm not your best source for theatrical reviews.

Take note:  I actually own four out of five of those movies listed above.

As a teen, I was quite the film snob.

I would drive out to 'film festivals' in Santa Monica with my learner's permit (omg, at 15, this was so illegal, in retrospect) and rent films such as "Camille Claudel", "My Life as A Dog", "The Tears of Petra Von Kant", "Tampopo", "A Taxing Woman", "Ikiru" from the local videostore... Seriously,  I would make a beeline towards the "Foreign" section at the local rental store, which, thankfully, was *huge*.

Growing up, I eventually learned to enjoy *fun* movies like "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective", but this took some getting used to. Even now, I have to get drag g g g g ed to see the big hollywood flicks, unless it has a 'serious' theme or has historical context.

Ah, but I digress.

As part of the TIFF, caught "Yoru no Shanghai" at the Corinthian Yacht Club this week- in Japanese and Chinese with subtitles, featuring an international cast, it was so great to catch this film! I tend to whine a bit about the lack of foreign film choices when it comes to living in Northern California, but this was a special treat.

Congratulations to your 7th year, TIFF!
Thank you, Yelp, for the voucher for my movie ticket AND for the invite to the exclusive pre-festival gathering at Sam's (my favorite place to take my dad for fish and chips) !

Oh, and BTW... Corinthian Yacht Club....  your Women's restroom has the KICKING ASS BESTEST view in the world, EVER.

And, driving solo with my driver's permit was a short ended affair, but that's another story.

AHEM, That's "The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant". I stand corrected.

I've attended a few different film festivals in my day, from our own SF International to Tribeca to Sundance, and I've even parodied a festival when I worked on a Keanu Reeves Film Tribute (you'll have to ask me about that one in person). From my recent experiences with the Tiburon Int'l Film Festival over the last few weeks, I have to say that it was right up there near the top of my list. Here's why:

Film festivals should always champion films, shorts and documentaries that  might not always see the light of day (typically because of commercial reasons), but are definitely important or at least great examples of their genre. Tiburon managed to bring together a series of films that were reflective of that. Two shining examples of that were American Fork (full disclosure: a film that my company sponsored!) and Becoming John Ford, but that's really just the start. After talking to a bunch of folks who attended different screenings, one commonality was the message of: "You should definitely see if it you get the chance." Another was: "Just go see something, the whole program deserves viewing."

But a film festival is not just about the films but also about the filmmakers, actors and the community who puts the festival together in the first place. When it all comes together, and you, as a patron, get to meet and mingle with these people, it's just so up close and personal. There's a real sense of immediacy and intimacy happening, and it's a lot better than any behind the scenes interview on a DVD.

Are you going to see the next runaway hit at Tiburon? Maybe, but probably not, and that just might be the greatest thing about this little gem of a festival. Thanks to Sia, Rachel and all the other festival staff who put on such a good show this year, and I'll see you at the next one.

Nearly (just incase there's some really horrible film festival out there - that only plays like Alot Like Love  - non-stop) all film festivals should be supported.

Especially festivals that are non-profits like the Tiburon International Film Festival.

Film Festivals are tremendously powerful things. They provide an outlet for independant directors. They give a voice to people who may not have been heard, otherwise. They  increase awareness and understanding about the world around us - through moving (literally and figuratively) visuals.

To give a film festival an less that the props it deserves for bringing people together, so that they can learn more about other cultures, other countries, other times, and just others out there, seems almost strange to me.

Admittedly there are films and film festivals that may resonate more with others, but I can guarantee that if you were to skim through all of the Tiburon International Film Festival's schedule you would be able to find at at least one film, AT LEAST (because I know I found many)  that would resonate with you.

If you were to study their film schedule, you would find a film, and I'm sure many others,  that would force you to re-examine the way you thought. If even, just a little.

Unfortunately not really knowing how to drive, puts me at a little bit of a disadvantage for the later film showings here (since the ferry does stop running early), but Tiburon is a darling getaway - so if you're in the same boat as me, booking a cute hotel room - would be well worth it.

I would highly suggest, anyone curious or passionate about film...or well the world around and beyond you - to look into exploring this festival more next year.

And on a beautiful day - make sure to take the scenic route over here. Your senses will be blown away.

(Disclosure - we've worked with Tiburon International Film Festival this year - but my five star review still stands)

I've been going to the Tiburon Film Festival since it started in 2002 and am consistently impressed by the caliber of films they get each year.

Besides the program, I really enjoy the personal atmosphere of the festival. It's clear that the staff care about film and moviegoers and because of that the filmmakers who attend are always accessible and friendly.

I've had the chance to chat with directors from around the world, which is something you just don't get at other festivals. Furthermore, they throw great parties at Sam's and the other classic Tiburon spots. It's truly a world class event and I'm happy to see that so many other Bay Area residents are taking notice.

None of the pretension of the Mill Valley festival, and way better films.

Yelp!! I am cold!!! I am in the line, American fork started two minutes ago and we are drunk... Seriously?!?!

EDIT: okay so I wrote that after one too many of the yelptastic cocktails but the film festival experience I had was pretty darn good. Despite having a confirmation they didn't have my tickets at will call but they made it work and the staff was friendly. So we were still able to get in and see the show. Thanks for having that small town festival attitude and letting me in! :)

I just stumbled into this film festival last year (2007).  I was skeptical at first - I couldn't believe they could show 250 films from 90 countries in just 9 days.  If it really was true, how was I ever going to find the time and energy to see even a small perentage of them?  And since many of the films were being shown here for the 1st time, I was determined to gather my strength and press on . . . and I was not disappointed.  I took the 'easy to read' program and marked my agenda . . . and headed to my first film.  Nine days later, with more films than I could count and 3 major events under my belt, I was exhausted but knew I had found a film festival that I would return to year after year.  Not only was the quality of the films shown incredible, but the entire festival has a focus  - Understanding the World Through Film - that I believe will continue to bring filmmakers and film attendees together from around the globe year after year.  Filmmakers want to be part of this one!

I'll see you there next March!!!  I'm volunteering.  Not sure if that will mean more or less opportunities to watch films.  We'll see.  I'll report.

5 star festival for sure.  The Tiburon Int. Film Festival brings unique films from all over the world.  The diversity and quality of their films brings me back every year.
The opening party to kick off the week long event is a must attend.  It's a chance to enjoy some great food and meet the film makers that will be featured in the festival.  The party also features special performances which typically reflect different cultures represented in the festival that changes from year to year.
The movies are a great place to go with friends or a date to enjoy quality films with depth - the perfect alternative to mainstream Hollywood.
