Okay, let me start with my two most important observations:
1. The furniture and layout space does promote socializing opportunities.
2. The Americano is good.
If you want to maximize your socializing opportunities, go by yourself, sit on the patio, and bring a dog. My dog did the work for me. When I went in to order my Americano, I carefully went over the plan with Finian (my dog). "Finian," I said, whispering into his ear, "I am going inside and I want you to stare through the window at me with huge sad puppy eyes and just cry a little bit so all these patio people feel sorry for you and pet you." Sure enough, Finian did his part and as I ordered my Americano and watched Finian do "sad puppy eyes" like we had planned, two women came up and started petting him. The women waved to me through the window and I smiled and waved back. When I returned to the patio, Finian had already made two friends and I introduced myself. I did have trouble with the WiFi but I didn't see anyone else having problems so it might have more to do with my computer than anything Thunderbird related. Also, I have noticed that sometimes when I get an Americano, the barista's serve it in a small sized cup (the way I like it) and sometimes the barista's serve it in a large size cup (the watery way I hate). This led to confusion the first time it was served in a large size cup. MAKE SURE YOU SPECIFY because I have noticed that some of the barista's don't always ask. That being said, the barista's are very nice (I especially like the two men with curly hair...my curly hair bias I guess).
I'm only gonna give 2 stars... for now. We'll see if it grows on me. Perhaps I'm just being biased. I'm a North Loop girl, so I have a certain fondness in my heart for Epoch, but a few months ago I moved. It's just crazy what a difference a mile can make!
I've only been in a few times so far, but I plan to keep going back & give it a chance. After all, this is now my walkable neighbourhood coffee shop. So far I see good & bad...
GOOD:
- They serve beer. Nice. I've yet to have a beer there, but I like that I have the option.
- The coffee's pretty good. I've definitely had worse!
- Nice food/pastry selection
- Proximity
BAD:
- The place is just so damn small, both inside & out.
- Seating is not as comfy as I'd like & it feels a little too claustrophobic.
- Still trying to decide how I feel about the crowd/vibe I've encountered here the few times I've gone in.
Over all... it's not a bad place, just not sure it's MY place. I hear lots of people love it. I think I'll continue to go in & grab coffee there, but not sure I'll ever feel comfortable just spending 1/2 the day there like I would at my old coffee haunt.
Cute spot. A few unique little surprises on the menu. Good coffee.
Small inside. Not a lot of privacy. Very comfortable. Lots of seating choices.
Nice little deck. Not a lot of ventilation. Too bad it's always filled with lots of smokers.
I'll pop in now and again. . .
I started spending a lot of time here in the past several months. It's relatively close by, small place, good vibe, and dig the wi-fi. I'm way overdue in posting a review on Yelp.
I've gotten the coffee here a few times, it's good but nothing to rave about. I've mostly had the tea here - great selection and quality. I love the green tea and especially the ginger - which has fresh bits of ginger in it. Add some honey and you're all set.
They have live music a times during the week nights, and an excellent beer special on Wednesday nights (I believe) for $2.00 a pint. The reason why these guys get 3-stars boils down to inconsistent customer service and lack of cleanliness. In regards to the service - sometimes it's good, sometimes so-so, and sometimes it's non-existent. It all depends on who's waiting on you as I've learned to avoid certain staff who are not friendly or courteous. This is the main reason why I stopped frequenting this place - I didn't feel like my business was appreciated.
It's also common that you'll have to wipe down your table or chair before you take a seat. The 2 couches on the main area usually have crumbs and dust which you'll (unfortunately) have to clean off yourself. That's a common theme - dirty tables with leftover rings from the previous customers. Another drawback: they will post specials on a blackboard w/o any pricing, so when you're ready to pay it can be quite a surprise (if you don't ask for pricing beforehand). Please post the price so we don't have to ask.
I'll only go back here if some friends of mine want to meet there, otherwise, I think I'm going to start checking out other coffee shops around town and see how they compare.
Whenever I have to go up north for work I always get super excited because Thunderbird is on my way! I am a serious coffee lover and I mean good flavorful strong coffee that makes you sigh and love life a little more with each sip. Thunderbird is totally the best tasting coffee in Austin. An added bonus are the friendly and efficient employees who make you seem like your their Norm to their Cheers. Two days of working up north next week. WOOT!
This is my new favorite Austin coffee shop. Here's why:
*comfy chairs
*AC in the hot hot summer
*nice aesthetic
*rockin' coffee
*plugs for my laptop
Though I haven't been there when it wasn't ridiculously hot outside, I am sure that once things cool down, you will see me there on that amazing patio. Oh and there's parking? Love this place.
I definitely caught this establishment on an off night.
Their espresso machine was down for maintenance which is, like, a no-no in the coffeehouse world. After a quiet sob in the corner to mourn the Honey Nut Latte that was not to be, I decided to try their peach iced tea which the young gentleman behind the counter was nice enough to brew fresh for me. I also grabbed a nice green apple and the combination was pleasant, especially on the hot summer nights we've been having.
The atmosphere and sparse interiors are nice (I want to steal the chandeliers) and it's full of people enjoying beverages and mooching wifi.
In general, a nice clean coffeehouse in the heart of the city.
Awesome Honey Nut Latte! The chocolate chip scone isn't too shabby, either.
As far as coffee shops go, it's not a pretentious as it could be. It's nice to hear the live music outside at night when I drive by, though I don't know if it's anything I would actually like to sit and listen to.
The people working could be nicer but it's a coffee shop so I never expect them to be overly friendly.
It's really hard for me to say which place in Austin has the best coffee, because my favorite coffee is usually the one in my hand. That being said, Thunderbird coffee ranks up there with the best I've had in my life. And I've been drinking coffee since I was a kid!
I usually just grab something and go, but Thunderbird has a lot of seating - both inside and out. The couches are comfortable, and the music is just right.
There are a few nice vegan pastry options by Celeste, and if you're not vegan, the food menu is pretty huge. I've found the service here to be efficient and pleasant.
My only complaint about Thunderbird is the parking. Occasionally we've had to abort our mission because we couldn't find a place to park. I think this area of town is only going to get busier, and in my not so (okay never) humble opinion, Thunderbird probably needs to fix their parking situation sooner rather than later.
I'm always on the lookout for non-Seattle spawned coffee shops. I found one in Thunderbirds Coffee. Although I've never tasted any of the food they serve, the coffee I've had there over the course of several visits has always been good. I also notice that they serve beer there as well -- so you can get drunk on beer and then sober up on coffee.
My only criticism is that the staff are aloof. While I can't really say that the customer service is bad at Thunderbirds, I wouldn't say the customer service is good, either.
Thunderbird has big windows, light unobtrusive music, and is not too crowded. Generally, it's the perfect combination of bright and cozy. More specifically, the Honey Nut Latte tastes like warm liquefied essence of graham cracker, also known as heaven. I became a fan today.
aight I must say now that I have to move far away instead of having you right out my back door I Will miss your dark deep rich expresso lattes .. I will not however miss the parking lot you have.
I love their Iced tea that really tastes like tea it satisfies my strange neurotic urges for it..
I like your logo mostly and the blue of you walls..
and I also really love whoever is making latte art in my cups.. .. anyways.. stop here and realize why there is at almost all times of day this place is hopping.
they also have panini's and Fireman's on TAP..
This is another right-around-the-corner spot for me. It'd be easy to like it just because it's the corner coffee shop, but it has a lot more to offer.
The coffee and espresso is good. The baristas are friendly and know what they're doing. Try some of the food! The sandwich I really like is called 'The Grover' (I think)...what can I say, I'm a sucker for pesto.
They have happy hour and drink specials that range from cheap Lone Star (I'm no snob) to cheap Fireman's 4 (okay, sometimes I'm a little bit of a snob). The patio is a great spot to watch live music and movie screening they occasionally put on (they showed The Jerk last summer).
Overall, a great spot to grab a cup of coffee or lounge for a relaxed night.
Five words: Iced Soy Honey Nut Latte
Thunderbird is a great coffee shop and it's just far enough north so that it is not always packed. I usually have no problem getting a table. Their coffee is quality and their hot tea selection is extensive relative to other cafe's around town. Even the food is good, especially the cranberry & walnut salad. The atmosphere is nice, large windows, nice colors, and a big patio. They play good music, but not too loud so as to be annoying (cough cough... Epoch) so its a great place to study and the employees are always nice and helpful. My only gripe (someone please tell me I am not crazy) is that the lights flicker ever so slightly at night. Its very distracting!
Overall- highly recommended!
I started going to Thunderbird about a year ago. What kept me coming back after the initial visit was the excellent coffee. Since then, Thunderbird has been steadily improving themselves by trying new things (French pressed coffee is the way to go!) and listening to their customers.
The chips and salsa are a favorite snack of mine and if I'm actually looking for lunch, the panini are all well thought out combinations that make you want to try each one. You won't be sorry if you do!
The crew is obviously into pleasing and rather than the cookie cutter personalities of large chain workers, they are all interesting people and committed to serving a good product.
Good service, good product, good people. I'm there!
I agree with Danijela Q. - this place is so close to my house and is an enjoyable walk with the dog. I want it to be my "go to" coffee shop, because I think the quality of Joe they serve is best in the area.
But just 10 minutes ago I got my meal - The Woodrow - a panini with salmon and other quality ingredients. When I ordered it, there were 10 people in the shop and five outside. I set up my laptop, gave my dog some water and went back inside to pick up my meal.
ME: "Is this my panini?"
BARISTA: "Well, it's a Woodrow".
OK, (edited here per the GM's request) MR RUDE, I get it. You're too cool and busy with all these people who are already served and drinking coffee to see I'm the only jackass in here in a grey Wilco t-shirt and red Chrome messenger bag.
Being rude is not hip. In fact, it's downright stupid.
PLEASE NOTE (01.14.08 AM) - The GM, Chris C, of Thunderbird emailed me today to ask me to edit this and remove the name I called his barista. Not once did Chris C mention anything about the barista's behavior or offer an apology. In fact, he said:
"You put me in a tough spot here. I'm committed to creating a great experience for each customer that comes into my store, but I think you crossed a line when you called my barista a [name]. Until you either apologize or change your review, I would prefer that you take your business somewhere else."
LAST EDIT (01.14.08 PM):
For those reading, Chris C here on Yelp is actually the Owner - not just the GM. After a few communications about this customer service issue he disclosed that fact. You can decide whether or not his practice of monitoring and lack of full disclosure is deceptive.

This is a great coffee shop-- just be wary of their vegan desserts. Unless you're really committed to the vegan lifestyle, your tongue will likely not tolerate the all-vegan chocolate torts or peanut butter cups well.
Only other negative is the sparse parking available at the coffee shop, along with an angry business owner located next door who will come scold those who park by his building, despite lack of any markings in the parking lot to that affect.
But this is overall a great place -- Coffee is great, atmosphere good, and free wifi with plenty of power plugs is awesome!
Uh nommmm slurrrrrp nommmm.
Oh, hi! Didn't see you there!
In fact, I still can't see you because I'm looking at how cute this joint is. If you're super fox I can't even tell because I am blinded by the cuteness. Sorry homie.
I have been using Thunderbird Coffee as my office since the doors first opened. As a PhD student I have written many of A papers and successful research conference papers in Thunderbird. I live in the Brentwood neighborhood and we love our community coffee shop.
I have 5 years previous experience as a barista at coffee shops like Thunderbird....so I know coffee! Thunderbird cares about the quality of their product and the staff decided to change from serving drip to smooth french press. I think they should name my soy cafe au lait w/ caramel after me! They always have my drink waiting for me as I walk in the door. I use to keep my own mug behind the counter "barber shop style". Chris (the one w/ the great flowing blond hair) and Ryan (both managers and owners) support the surrounding Brentwood neighborhood events. If you ask they will gladly allow you to hold a community service event or meeting at Thunderbird. I often see folks teach Spanish classes in Thunderbird, hold voter registration drives, and it always serves as the water break stop for every Austin marathon that passes by.
One of the employees, Ryan, is very talented at making beautiful flower swirls w/ the steamed milk. Liz Lively, who works the very early shift, chats me up in the morning to make sure I am awake to start my day (and we have also chatted it up over drinks and music together). Ryan, the owner, offers the regulars free samples of new drinks. Thunderbird has great beer on tap ($1 and $2) specials. The seasonal Mothership Wit is my favorite. Very refreshing. So if you live in the neighborhood, you can just drink a pitcher, and if you are a bit tipsy, you can walk home.
Brentwood neighbors love Thunderbird! I got 3 Starbucks gift cards for Christmas and haven't touched one.
Best tasting coffee in Austin. Cafe Medici is very good (and they both use the same beans from Cuvee Roasters) but Thunderbird is better.
They do both great espresso, and awesome "drip" coffee...although they don't drip, they strictly do French Press. And they do it very well, incidentally, it's not just a stunt - their press coffee is smooth and flavorful.
You know how peanut butter and chocolate are meant to go together? Well, Thunderbird knows that, with some delicious PB cup thing. Oh, my it was good. (I'm not sure where it was from)
It was already late in the evening, so I wanted decaf. The barista suggested a decaf Horchata. It was exactly what I needed. I'd get one again for sure.
We sat inside... Unfortunately, the deck was not conducive to talking, since it was small and some less-than-stellar performer was on his guitar. Talking out there would not have been appropriate.
I'd never been before, but if I find myself on that side of the river, I'm sure I'd return to try more coffee--maybe even with caffeine!
Last night I joined two friends at the Thunderbird Coffee Shop and must say I immediately became a fan.
No expensive decor, but comfortable and homey.
Small menu , but a decent sampling and probably the best salsa I have had in town thus far.
Staff is friendly and funny, maintain professionalism as well as making you feel on your first visit as if you are a regular.
The coffee, how could I forget the coffee. I had the Mocha and it came at a time I needed the energy and also the warmth that only an excellent cup of coffee can provide.
Thanks for not being a starbucks, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food and can not wait to return.
I stopped in this past Friday afternoon for a couple of drinks to go and the place was moderately busy, though not unmanageable. This is the first time I'd been here in a year, so expectations were high.
I asked the irritable looking barista "What's in the iced horchata"?
His surly muttered answer: "Horchata."
Really? Seriously? Clearly, I am a total freaking dumb ass for not knowing what horchata is.
Immediately after this exchange, he was equally rude to the person before me who asked where the coffee was from. There was just no reason to be a jerk face.
The iced horchata by the way...too sweet. I couldn't finish it. The iced mocha was pretty good (but also overly syrupy). Honestly, I don't know if I'll be back anytime soon. T
he coffee & atmosphere at Thunderbird are better than Genuine Joe's, and the people who work at Genuine Joe's are way nicer than those at Thunderbird. Usually taste trumps attitude for me, but in this case, I'm going to have to stand by GJ.
Ironically, I didn't drink any coffee during my visit to Thunderbird Coffee. But what I did have was scrumptious! Their Aroyo de Seco panini was one of the best sandwiches I think I've tasted in a long time. Melted provolone cheese, chicken and roasted tomatoes. Bread toasted with those mysterious Panini stripes. Yum! And, side salad; oh side salad, of mixed lettuce greens and dressing. Your simplicity inspired fantasies of filling up a swimming pool with you and eating my way out. The dressing was that good!
The salsa and chips were delicious too. The salsa tasted fresh and had just the right amount of heat to inspire several trips to the bar for $1 Lone Star beers. Yes, I did use $1 and beer in the same sentence. $1 after 7 p.m. $2 before 7 p.m. Speaking of beer at a coffee shop, if you're torn between caffeine and alcohol, try the Guinness with an espresso shot. My friend Mick let me take a sip of his--wowsa--it packs a punch!
My friends and I sat outside on the deck, enjoying the lukewarm Texas breeze and listening to our friends Paula Jean Brown and Annabella sing beautiful music while attempting to drown out the ubiquitous sounds of Harleys driving up and down Koenig--this weekend is the Republic of Texas Biker Rally (ROT Biker Rally).
It was a fun evening and the best part is Thunderbird Coffee is on my way home from work--next time I think I'll try their coffee.
UPDATE: Since I now can't go anywhere without yelping about it, these were my drunken observations written on a Wells Fargo money envelope found minutes ago in my purse from last night: "Live music is so revalant (I'm sure I meant "prevalent") it's taken for granted, much like San Diegans, who have access to the ocean only to see it when company comes to town. How amazing is it that we live in a town where live music mingles with apathy and internet" .
Sober translation: I think I couldn't believe we had awesome live music outside while people inside were oblivious to it all.
My life changed just a little today because I had soy in a single shot cappuccino at Thunderbird Coffee and it was very good. Since finding I am dairy intolerant I have been hesitant to use soy. I still prefer Rice Dream because, seriously people, soy is not good for you but today, it was an okay substitute. The cappuccino turned out beautiful with the perfect amount of foamy goodness on top.
The menu at Thunderbird features breakfast items, panninis, pastries, vegan items and chocolate. At 2:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, it was a bustling place with lots of wi-fiers sipping and keyboarding and jazzy music playing. There are comfy chairs and a sofa plus lots of tables and chairs. I plan to bring the Mister back for breakfast because I happen to know he likes to sip coffee on a patio.
Great iced coffee and a cute, friendly barista (Katrina, I think?) to boot.
I'll definitely go back.
One star off for being a little pricey. (Dominican Joe's is better and only 2 bucks, including tax.)
Stopped in for the first time yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. Not that I expected anything less but I really found the place warm and inviting. Staff didn't expect you to know what to order right away and was available for questions. The white tea was just what I needed on this day and was a good companion for the patio. I'll definitely be back to chill one day after work and try their green tea. I'll also have to try their breakfast tacos sometime. Its great to find a place like this that is so close to my commute.
Featured: $1,800 psychedelic stoner art.
The kind with text you can only read if you're stoned. My theory anyway. [Source: http://splendidrockets...]. Mesmerizing, enough so to glance every few minutes while simultaneously listening to my friend sitting beneath them. That sporadic glancing thing I do always psyches people out, usually making them turn around and search for what on earth could be more interesting than watching their talk... but not my friend. She's sharp like that!
Clean lines here, kind of reminds me of the decor at Zocalo cafe: bright colors (no shying away from turquoise or lime green) and minimal wall clutter. Filling breakfast panini (breakfast should be available to the common consumer 24 hrs a day in my world) and they serve bottled, real-sugar Coca Cola! Whatever chairs aren't cushy, are still comfortable after sitting in them for five hours. I like that their logo resembles that of Ford's first generation Classic Birds, mostly because my dad used to have one when he was younger. Add to that laundry list the attractive barist(o) playing glance-tag from behind the counter and I'm sure to be back on the right night. I won't say when!
At first I was worried - the line was long and not really moving, and the girl behind the counter seemed kind of pissed off. But soon enough things started moving and she really wasn't pissed off, probably just concentrating really really deeply.
I went there with two colleagues to have a meeting we didn't want to have at the office. Found a place to sit easily enough and really, the only drawback was the music was a bit loud. I like music as much as the next guy, but a lot of places seem to think it has to be more than background noise, and TBird follows the pack on that.
We all liked what we got - in my case an Americano with room. The barista was really nice, and the large cup was hot and nicely foamy on top.
Parking was easy, too, so all around I really liked this place. I'll be back, even if I'm not a hipster doofus - I'd like to be, but I'm too old.
Love, love, love their coffee! I go here frequently in the morning for a skim latte and they rarely disappoint. I like that they are in my neighborhood and I feel good about supporting a local business.
I do have to say, and this is a big factor for me, that their pastries are really not very good! The scones and muffins always taste kind of shortening-ey and don't have very many of the advertised additives (i.e. the chocolate chip scones have very few chocolate chips, the blueberry muffins have tiny and few blueberries, etc.). However, the cinnamon rolls are great - I suspect they are from upper crust.
Thunderbird, get some new pastries and you will be a five star coffee shop in my book!! Please!!
This place is so purdy. The patio facing Woodrow is the perfect place to hang in the beautiful Austin weather.
There's so much java goodness and yummy sandwich options to choose from.
This is my designated coffee shop meeting place.
I can hear the person that I'm speaking to without competing with loud music. There's plenty of seating options. I bump into Brentwood personalities and familiar faces.
Also, they serve Fireman's #4 beer. This place is good in my book.
Glad to report the T'bird is doing well..in fact, so well that I can drive by at any time of day and the lot is full of cars if not packed. I'll admit I'm a little perplexed at the draw of the place. They must have read my post because they added a couple of couches and more comfy chairs which makes it a much more inviting place.
Good job!

The second best coffee in Austin, in my humble opinion. And I'm talking about a regular cup of coffee.
Although I don't hang around inside any coffee shops (I order to-go), I especially wouldn't want to here, as the atmosphere is pretty sterile. Still, they display local artwork and it seems to change frequently so it's not completely dull.
There's usually some decent music playing. They have Wi-Fi. I go here when the parking lot at Pacha is full.
I really appreciate that Thunderbird offers vanilla extract because that makes my coffee much more flavorful.
The only food I've had here is the Breakfast Panini, special request veggie style with onions and tomatoes. It's good enough that I'm interested to try their other food offerings.
I want to love this place a lot. First, it is close to my house. Second, it's a lot like Clementine, which I love.
But sadly, I can't give it that high of a rating. I've been here twice and both times they got my order wrong, and at time when it wasn't all that crowded. The first time, I ordered a chai with a shot. It was just plain chai. The second time, I ordered a coffee and a breakfast panini. The coffee was fine, but I they forgot that I ordered the sandwich and when they got around to making it, they made the wrong kind.
The barristas seem perpetually perturbed, but the coffee is good.
Yeah, I'm biased, I go here every day. I've been haunting Austin's coffee dives since the Les Amis days, when Quacks was still on the drag, and Ruta Maya was closer to Liberty than Expose.
Thunderbird is special, and keeping the flame alive. Please give them some love.
EDIT: Ok, I get the recent "hater" reviews - you also love Thunderbird so much that you're afraid it's already blown up by popularity, so you're doing a little Neocon-style disinfo Yelp campaign to encourage people not to absolutely love it as much as you do, thereby ensuring you always have a seat in your favorite spot. I get that has to be the case, because I have been going here daily for over a year and I have never observed the staff to be anything but pleasant, engaging and helpful to everyone in the shop, not just the regulars and cool kids. That's probably why it's so popular! I mean yeah, the coffee at Thunderbird is awesomely hand-crafted, the decor is clean and visually rewarding yet unobtrusive, and the paninis taste amazing and satisfy every time, so I would go here often even if the staff didn't know me and my drinks on a first-name basis.
Just and update that the owner read my review and contacted me with a very nice note and sent me two free drink coupons. I'll definitely be going back to try them out again next time I'm in the area. And I think it's great that the owner took the time to contact me.

Where's the love? Driving by stopped in on Sunday morning. Maybe it was an off time. Cool spot. Nice place. Great patio. All the makings for a great coffee joint and other reviews look good here.
I left a nearly full latte on the table.
I have since received several messages from Thunderbird. The coffee it seems during the time I was there was having hard water trouble. The owners are kind and have explained the situation. Being from out of town I can't get right back there to try again but based on the customer service and kindness of the owners I kicked it up to 3 stars. I will try again when in Austin and let you all know what I think.
Coffee? Decaf is all I've tried and it was lukewarm and so-so.
Service? So-so (when I was there last.)
Ambiance? Thumbs up! I worked on some realty stuff one afternoon and had a grand time sitting at the window.
Paninins? Yum! A friend's daugher loves the Nutella and Honey (or something like that.) I've had many other lunch paninins that make me happy.
Outdoor seating? Check!
Internet? Check!
If this is your 'hood, I say check it out for sure!
I really wanted to like this place as I have driven by it several times, and finally made a point to stop and go in. I don't know if it was an off day or if the employee I encountered had just put in his two weeks' notice, but the service was terrible. My friend and I approached the counter without so much as a hello from either of the two employees behind the counter. The guy who would eventually take our order stood behind the counter with his arms folded across his chest and looked completely bored. I ordered the house coffee and the coffee was good, except when I got to the end of the cup and gulped a mouthful of grounds floating at the bottom of my cup. They do have a nice patio, but nothing compared to Mozart's.
