Took my parents here when we wanted fast, inexpensive & good food (hey, isn't that what a diner is for?) .. we were not disappointed.
We had the nicest & most attentive waiter, a guy constantly filling our coffee & water, and big huge plates of delicious omelettes. AND we were out of there in under 45 minutes. Its open 24 hrs, but we went there for normal breakfast time on a Saturday. However, whenever I'm out the door at 6:30 during the week, it always has a healthy stream of businessmen grabbing grub.
This is the slowest diner ever! I live 1 block and 1 avenue away, and it always takes them 45 minutes to deliver simple items such as eggs or a hamburger.
Probably best to dine in, or order delivery from a different diner altogether.
based on yelp reviews, i came to this diner, even though i live much much closer to to another.
don't get me wrong. good food. good solid food. friendly, quick service.
there was nothing about it that stood out. not good, not bad.
just-right cooked eggs. crispy bacon (i asked for it that way). toast. i wasn't particularly a fan of the homefries (had peppers and whatnot in it - i'm more of a traditional homefries/hashbrowns kinda gal), but hey.
i wouldn't mind coming back here, but i certainly won't trek back here for kicks. three stars indeed.
Gross blueberry pancakes. Not even cooked all the way through. YUCK. I wish I still lived by Joe jr.'s...
The food is great for diner food. It's definitely on the fresh, non--greasy side- Now, I'm not saying it's healthy, but it sure is delicious and totally filling. When I lived in the UES my friends and I were able to hibernate through a cold winter by ordering delivery once a day from our staple diner! I can't count how many times I've ordered from here but I've never had anything but a great experience!
3 Star gets 3 stars (OK maybe 4 on a good night). A decent "typical" diner that is always there when I need a pancake fix. 24 hour service is a big plus - and a good post-drinking place. Nice for brunch although it gets crazy crowded.
Try a grilled blueberry muffin with butter - WOW - so simply yet so tasty!
My first "pure" Yelp review (i.e. not transferred from my Citysearch account)... finally...
3 Star Diner is a staple of my Saturday/Sunday mornings, and it's also a staple of my Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights (usually around 3am). This is a fine 24-hour diner that has anything you could want. They'll pretty much make you anything you can think of.
My standard: a cheeseburger on whole wheat bread, grilled (cheese on both sides of the burger), with a fried egg in there as well. Is the burger a "quality" burger? Nope... but I gotta say that at 3am, when I'm craving this monstrosity of a sandwich, 3 Star always comes through with prompt delivery.
The next morning, my roommates and I usually stumble down the block to 3 Star to nurse our lingering hangovers. Breakfast is CHEAP! Really cheap. The bacon is usually pretty well done and not recommended. None of the food is truly delicious or fancy in any way, but it's a cheap breakfast with free coffee refills.
A couple of TVs in there show NY1 or various sports matches, so that's a plus... and the wait staff is decent and attentive. I've seen a ton of liquor at their bar, and I've been meaning to sit down with some friends for a quality night (or day) of drinking at 3 Star... I mean, who gets drunk at a diner like this? Well one day, we will.
In the meantime, I encourage you all to try 3 Star Diner, because it will certainly live up to 3 stars of expectation (on a scale of 5). I rated it 4 stars because it's open 24 hours (with 24-hr delivery as well) and that just can't be beat. I also owe many, many of my weekend afternoons to 3 Star... if not for this place, my hangovers on those days would have been immeasureably worse. Thanks 3 Star!
Three Stars is a cozy diner with reasonably helpful staff and not too grungy decor. My doctor's office is nearby, so it's a good place to know about when I've just given what seems like a gallon of blood and am really fiending for a big unhealthy sandwich and a pile of greasy fries.
Actually, their fries are really damn good. And they have a huge menu with just about everything you could ever want when it comes to diner food. And while the prices are higher than I'd like, they're still pretty low compared to the rest of the neighborhood.
Three Stars gets four stars (Has anyone made that joke yet? I'm too lazy to check.) and I'm sure I'll go back to try their matzoh ball soup or corned beef sooner than later. It is what it is and I like it.
Whether it's the middle of the night and you're craving some munchies, or you need a truly satisfying hangover breakfast, or you want a leisurely Sunday brunch, Three Stars will be a guaranteed hit.
Anything you could ever desire from a greasy spoon is here. I always order scrambled eggs with hash browns and toast. In true diner form, the portions are big and hearty!! There are a lot of other great dishes, like gyros, soups/bisques, burgers, salads, etc. Filling, delicious, traditional diner food. yum yum yum
The walls of windows make for great people watching, too :)
I will go to the upper east side strictly to eat here, and that says all you need to hear. But if you need more... I can be quite prolific...
Three Stars Diner - give yourself more credit!! You fill my heart and tummy with joy and memories and yumminess! How lucky were we to stumble across you when wandering the upper east in search of a place to get sustinance, at 4pm, when everything except the occasional mexican and pizza joint is closed for the pre-dinner break. (Say it with me now... Boooooooooo.)
The food we had was **THE BEST** I've had at a greek diner in years, maybe ever. Coming from a girl who practically grew up in a vinyl booth, with a different favored diner for each day of the week this is a very serious statement.
Overwhelmed by the extensive menu (Matzoh ball soup? Twin lobster tails? Burger with fries? Breakfast? Root beer float? Stuffed clams? Sure.) and in a panic when asked to order, I regressed to the standard of my youth... cheese fries and a greek salad. The fries themselves were super crispy and seasoned, the melted cheese lightly browned and gooey. Sigh. I finished the plate. I did. I'm a little ashamed of myself, but smiling at the memory. The greek salad was HOTNESS - baby lettuces, copius cucumber, crazy chunks of feta, kalamata olives, delish grape leaves and a bottle of homemade dressing brought to the table so you can dress it yourself. Um, hello? Is it weird that I want to date my dinner?
My girl Dana decided to go big or go home - and worked it out over the roast beef dinner with mashed and corn. Came with a salad and soda for $12.95. A piece of meat the size of a small tennis racket held the fort, with au jus and excellent fresh mashed potatoes (I had to try them) finishing it off. She too cleared the plate. It was impressive.
Once the food arrived, few words were spoken. But in between chews Dana and I would sit back, stretch our bellies, and exclaim "This is amaaaaaaaazing" before falling upon our plates to continue our work. This happened approximately 6 times throughout the meal.
There are booths and a soda fountain type bar area, and the obligitory peeved teen serving you and popping her gum. I have to give props where props are due - the bus boy was fiercely on point. We ordered our drinks from the waitress and before she could even leave the table to ask him to get them, they arrived. This kinda stuff happened the whole time we were there. If only I was that good at my job.
Really, you'll have a good time here. Also... on the way out we saw the take out menu and I noted, they deliever. That's just a hot mess waiting to happen.
I love Three Star. Don't get me wrong. Their food is GREAT. Kate F. has already waxed on about their food, and I don't disagree with her at all.
However. Three Star is a 24 Hour Diner and THEIR NIGHT STAFF SUCKS. I live a block away, so I eat here (and at Green Kitchen up the street) all the time. I also eat here late at night all the time cause I don't sleep. The food at night is actually better than in the day. The service is terrible.
I get it, it's late at night, you're tired, that sucks. I understand there are hot girls from Jersey decked out eating dinner/drunk food and I am just local scum. I get it. But, at the same time, when I'm seated at one of three tables in the whole freaking place, I shouldn't have to wait 30 minutes for my bill. I shouldn't have to keep waiting after you look me in the eye, see I have my credit card out, and you keep walking. I shouldn't have to walk up to the register and demand my bill because you're busy flirting with the cashier that I can't even get your attention when I want to. And most of all, you shouldn't ask me if I want more water, hear me say yes, and then never give me my water. You asked me! And then you ignored me!
To be fair to the Wednesday night staff....they are awesome. They take care of you, know their regulars, and don't ever ignore you. Friday night staff can suck it.
An unremarkable diner in a neighborhood with several, I came into here when I needed a quiet place to pick up a burger and kill an hour with a book. In retrospect, I was glad I did, as it fit the bill perfectly. The place was clean, and the price was reasonable. The fact that diner was open 24 hours must be a great aid to the residents of this neighborhood, but most of the other diners at 7 PM on a Friday night were senior citizens and not the type of crowd I would use as a barometer of a fine dining establishment- but again, that is more a review of diners in general rather than this one.
growing up- this was an extension of my mama's kitchen.
3 star used to be on lexington about a decade ago across from my parents house and i legitimately ate there 3 times a week. i always ordered fried chicken (the snwow white special) off the kids menu or the cream of turkey soup which was very basically a delicious bowl of meat chunked gravy.
okay. to be perfectly frank, i know me some diners, and 3 star has THE best tuna fish and french fried i have ever had, sorry mama, your tuna's pretty a super close second.
chef salads, grilled chicken pita's, turkey burgers- even the daily special fish kabobs! 3-star is a 5-star bet, now and forever.
special thanks to Laura and her family for always making a visit here feel like coming home.
Great diner with totally typical diner food. If you're looking for somewhere on the UES to eat in the middle of the night, this is the place for you!
Three Star is definitely the best diner in this neighborhood in terms of quality, price, and friendliness. I am lucky enough to live a few blocks away, and if I get hungry in the middle of the night this is almost always where I end up. The food is very typical diner food, but good, made to your specifications, and always seems fresh. You have the option of substituting french fries for home fries at no extra charge, which rocks. Green Kitchen down the street is a little more diverse in terms of their menu offerings, but it is reflected in the prices, which are higher- you can very easily feed 2 people on $20 and walk out stuffed at Three Star. So all in all a quality experience with good food, friendly staff, and low prices.
