3 reviews for Three Arch Bay
In the quaint little town of Laguna Beach, in the sleepy little gated community of Three Arch Bay, you'll find this sheltered and charming cove of sandstone cliffs and cold blue water.
My whole childhood can be measured by the memories I have of Three Arch Bay. It was the moon reflected in the water here at night that inspired my first word, "light." Here, walking with my mother on Shell Beach, I learned how to spy cowries, cone shells, dwarf olives and trivias, about keyhole and owl limpets and chitons, how to check for hermit crabs, and to avoid the sideways-scurrying fiddlers with their huge pinching claws. My father went diving and found a string of moon snails clinging to a kelp strand near Bird Island, which I put in a clear pail of water and kept for the day, then put back into a tide pool before we left. I dug for sand crabs and searched the rocks near the arches, hoping to find turban shells or abalones or pirate coins, and walked among the tide pools, looking at the fish trapped there. I held huge sea slugs which oozed purple slime, and poked the sea anemones so that they curled inward. It was here that we spied a marine duck with her babies. She left one behind as she swam out to sea. It had a twisted leg and couldn't follow. We rescued it and tucked it in a towel, and drove it to the bird man in town.
Every Fourth of July in Three Arch Bay was a cause for celebration as friends and family would join us for a picnic on the beach. We would eat barbeque and sugar cookies and drink lemonade during the day under a huge tent, and then roasted s'mores at night before watching the fireworks launched from Whale Rock. My parents told me that on her first Fourth of July, the loud noises scared my younger sister and she cried. But I was ever fascinated and never startled by the loud sounds that the sparklers made. I still remember one that exploded and sent such spectacular streamers down around me that for a few moments, I felt like I was a small bird in a huge golden cage.
Some time has gone by since then. Three Arch Bay seems smaller now, and it's more crowded with people. Since I left home, I've visited the beach less and less. Because they started several brush fires, the fireworks were moved to an off-shore barge some years ago. Change is a part of life. But I hope that the beach is always there for us to enjoy.

Duh! Previous Yelpers, Three Arch Bay is a private community. Can't get in unless you are a current homeowner. I know, I've tried also to "go back", but the guards there turned away my Mother and myself many years ago. She was PISSED! Tried again recently with a retired older friend who also had lived there. No Luck. If any one knows how to get past the guard gate, let us know, ok?
