Homeless man: Girl, I like your eyebrows. They be reeeeeal thick
Me: Um, thank you?
Man: yeah girl, nice and thick. I like em thick

I'm not sure if he was still talking about my eyebrows at that point but I think that was a good enough sign to get down to Threads. Yes, it is more expensive than LA or NYC but it is pretty convenient if you work downtown.

Tips:
1.Bring cash
2.Call ahead if you are going between 4 and 6 pm
3.If you have sensitive skin, put some Neosporin on afterwards to reduce redness
4. Avoid the peeps who are heading up to the psychic

I hate to give such a low rating because I love Sonia...Just not anyone else that works there! I started going to Threads back in 2007. I was a faithful customer every 2 - 3 weeks (I am pretty hairy) chin and eyebrows. Then before you know it ,Sonia is never available...so I get the young girl and some other woman from the U street store. It hurt more, and my eyebrows were screwed -BIG time!  Flat, skinny,  no arch and no where close to matching. I stopped going grew my eyebrows back and I do them on my own.

If you can get ahold of Sonia (Lucky you!) if not your definatley not going to get what you think your paying for.

Overall, I have to say I prefer getting my eyebrows threaded than getting them waxed.  After the hair is ripped from my face with hot wax, I have pink, raw skin for a few hours.  So any alternative to that is better...and a bit more attractive.  Threads is such a great place for a quick pop-in.  It's just a few blocks from my apartment and open everyday.  I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get a spot in the chair.  Plus, my eyebrows always look awesome after they are done.

If you have never tried threading, I highly recommend it.  My skin isn't hot pink and threading lasts longer than waxing.  My only gripe with this place is the $15 for the threading.  It's not terrible, but I have paid $8 before for the same service.

Loved it! I followed the recommendations to wait for Sonya and my brows were awesome. There was a bit of a wait but it was around the holidays and lunch time.

As for the pain level, for me it didn't really hurt while she was threading but a few minutes after she was done I was a little stinging.

Most of you don't know this but genetically I have a uni-brow, and it's because of my visits to threads that this isn't an issue. Never again will someone refrain from making eye contact because they don't want to focus in on those in-between the brow hairs growing in because I'm too sensitive to wax. I used to wax weekly, but now I just go to threads once a month. It does last longer and I never have that "the wax was too hot so it actually removed some skin" issue. Oh and even at $15 it's still cheaper than waxing when you factor in less visits.

There is now one in Bethesda!!! They are amazing!!! Stay away from waxing at over priced salons. These ladies at Threads are great!

I have very hard to manage eyebrows. When I use to wax they were always misshaped or way too thin. Threading is perfect and Threads is a great place to go!

How I wish I knew about threading when I had two huge caterpillars crawling on my face back in the 80's.  But alas I have over tweezed and plucked leaving me with little to work with in terms of shaping.

I went to the Bethesda location and was very please with the work of Sonia. The shop was clean and spacious and is only a few blocks walking distance from where I live.  Huge bonus!  Sonia was very pleasant and made chit chat with me while she worked and told me about learning the craft in India.  Having waxed before I think threading is way easier to handle and I felt little if nothing more then the movement of the threads.  Since the shop was empty I did think they could have picked up the used threads lying on the ground - but that is a minor complaint.  I really liked the way my brows were shaped and she managed to make my brows even which I was never able to achieve through waxing.

It seems to me that some of the reviews here are written by people promoting the store.  Shameless.  But, I will not let that detract me from going again.

I love Threads. I have been going there for 4 years now. They are definitely overpriced, but that's because there is surprisingly litttle competition in Washington, DC. Sonia and Preeti are sharp businesswomen and while it kills me to pay $15 for eyebrows when I can get it done for $6 in the burbs, they have a *knack* for creating the perfect arch. I have tried their other ladies before, but the older lady knicked my eyebrows so they bled and the young girl could only clean up but not shape my eyebrows correctly. I only allow those women to thread my sideburns. The only thing stopping me from giving them the full five stars is the expensive pricing.

First threading experience and it was great!  Sonya I think her name was?  She definitely knew what she was doing.  In just minutes, I had beautiful clean brows.  There was no wait, no reservation.  Perfect!  To top it off, it's located literally around the corner from my office.  The only reason why I give them four stars as opposed to five is because they charge a tad more than other places I've checked out on yelp.  Otherwise, go there for the much less painful way (than waxing and plucking) of getting your dream eyebrows.

Ok people - the only place I get my eyebrows threaded is at Usha's (Baltimore-Towson/Parkville). She is awesome! Since I've moved to DC I've been trying to find a place that threads eyebrows.

Threads is the place to go to! It is not a fancy smanchy salon, but the woman did a great job. And she knew that 'everyone likes a full-brow' - her own words after I requested to keep it full. :)

It's address is 1424 L St. located on the 4th floor & its right next door to Ollie's. Get off Farragut North metro & head towards 15th St. Don't go too far! Just remember its on L St. You will see a sign for Psychic Readings outside of the place. I had a hect of a time finding this place, but I guess I got a work out of it. They're open until 7pm on the weekdays.

I highly recommend this place!

I have a new "thing."  Yeah, I know, I seem to develop new obsessions as often as I change my hair color. But this one seems to be sticking.

Ever since I got my eyebrows waxed, I have been sort of fixated on keeping them tamed. But the waxing is not so much fun with the pain and the pulling and the hotness. What to do?

One of my more "girlie" girlfriends turned me on to this place. They do what's called eyebrow "threading." What happens is the threader actually takes a piece of cotton thread and weaves in between the hairs she is going to remove. The Threads salon does an excellent job.

The salon itself is on the small side- it only has 2 seats so it can only accommodate 2 clients at a time (only one when they only have one threader in the place). But the process itself is quick, less painful than waxing and the results last longer, too. Well worth the $10!

If you prefer threading, then this is probably the best place to go in the city for cheap.  I went once and, although they did do a good job of shaping, my skin was left irritated and acne-filled for days.  I wouldn't go back, but maybe I just have sensitive skin!

Also, I had to wait outside for like...ten minutes...before someone finally opened the door.  When you go, I hope they fixed their intercom system.

This review is testament to why Yelp works and why small businesses should love us Yelpers so much :)

I had never heard of threads until Yelp. Now I doubt I'll ever get my eyebrows waxed again, and Threads can be pretty certain I'll return. I went to the L street location with a couple things in mind. 1) try to get the woman in charge, 2) beware of too thin eyebrows and 3) beware of unevenness.

I got the woman in charge and my eyebrows are a great thickness. At first they were uneven when I looked in the mirror, so I pointed that out and she quickly fixed it.

Much less pain than waxing, so fast, and from what you all tell me, its lasts longer.

Note: the prices today were $15 for eyebrows.

Thanks Yelp. I heart you.

After reading about Threads on Yelp, I decided to give it a go. I had a visitor coming to town and I didn't want him to be like, "Damn, what gives w/the brows?" I went to Threads during my lunch break, as I work a couple blocks away.

Threads is really quite inconspicuous. Unless you know it's there, you won't know it's there.  :o)  I found the buzzer thingy to let the folks upstairs know someone wanted to be buzzed in. I dialed the appropriate number, but alas--no buzzing to let me in. I tried again. And again. And again. I even tried buzzing the fortune teller in the same building to see if she would let me. After three or four minutes--literally--of trying to get buzzed in, I finally had success: the sweet, obnoxious sound of a girl who has been let into a building.

I climbed up the narrow stairwell to the second floor. The was closed, so I gave a little knock and let myself in. As I expected based on other people's reviews, I saw two salon-style chairs in a small room. I was the only person there--aside from the two employees--and was welcomed in and ushered to a seat. I explained that I wanted my brows shaped, but I'm sure the woman who went to work on my already knew that. I also let her know that it was my first time w/threading and that I didn't want to end up with brows that looked like they had been drawn on (think of all those old ladies who use eyeliners to draw pseudo-brows. *shudder*).

I tilted my head back, watched the woman put the end of a piece of sewing thread (yes! like you buy at JoAnn Fabrics!) in her mouth, twist it around a bit, and move toward my face. It didn't feel like she was really doing much of anything, but I felt little hairs dropping on my face. The more she did it, the more it hurt. It didn't hurt any more than waxing does, though, plus there's no risk of being allergic to the wax, so I was pleased.

Don't expect pleasantries here; it's not like a salon. These folks shape your brows and don't care if you're recently engaged or getting liposuction next week. If you like to chit chat w/your hairdresser, you won't find anything of the sort at Threads.

When she was done, the woman gave me a mirror to inspect my face. The undersides of my brows were cleaned up--all the "strays" were gone. From start to finish, the process took all of, oh, six minutes.

Getting your brows done will set you back $12--a 20% increase over the old price of $10. Including a $2 tip, threading is still cheaper than eyebrow shaping at any salon in the DC area. I was back at my office less than half an hour after I left. Sure, my brow area was a little red, but the overall shape was very pleasing.

Just a note: a few days later I realized one brow seemed thinner than the other. They really just didn't match. I blame that on myself, though--one brow is short, the other is a little longer.

I have been having my eyebrows threaded for quite a few years, and Threads was my first best salon in DC.  Sonya is nice, but another lady who worked there previously was even better.  This is why I have given this salon three stars.  No matter how great the customer service, location, etc. is, the whole point of coming is to get a great brow shape.  In this case, I would suggest that you head over to Dupont for an expert.

Threads was my first threading experience.  I went to the L Street location and thereafter to the U St. location for the simple reason that I could never find the L St. store, no matter how hard I looked and how  often I walked up and down that block.  I know it's hidden, but seriously?  A sign would be nice.  Minus one point for unclear directions.

I have had good experiences at Threads.  Never had any blood, lopsided brows, or pain.  Always had nicely groomed eyebrows.  It does depend on who you get, though, as sometimes the shape was wow-I-didn't-know-my-eyebrows-could-look-GOOD.  And sometimes it was just ok.  This holds true at the U St. location too.

I've never made an appointment, just walked in after work or when I'm around the area.  It's never been longer than a 15 minute wait.  The prices are reasonable but seem a little pricey.  I recommend Threads but think I prefer Dupont Threading, which was a little quicker and a lot more reliable re: shape of brows.  I think I will have to do a little more research to be sure.

My rating is going down on Threads because each time I return the price goes up! Threading is becoming more and more popular, so I understand why the price is going up but it also means there has to be another salon nearby with a better price. When I started coming here I paid $8, the price is up to $15.00 for eyebrow threading now.

Threads is wonderful.  One of my friends in NYC recommended threadiing to me instead of waxing.  And Threads is/was one of the only places in DC that did this.

They're very quick, which makes the wait pretty short.  Call ahead and they can tell you how busy they are.  But making an appointment won't do anything.  I think that Natasha is the better of the 2, but both of them are great with shaping your brows.  THey're prices are great.  I think it's right around $30 for a full face.

Sonia works miracles. As soon as I sat down in the chair she started to go to work on my face. I didn't have a chance to tell her what I wanted. It definitely not fancy salon but she's efficient and speeding.
It was my first time getting threading so it did hurt a bit but the end result is fantastic!!!

Fast forward 06/26/08

I recently went back to threads with the same high expectations I rated them 4 stars. I admit that I didn't go to Sonia she was busy. I made the mistake and  got it done by the young girl that works there I think she's her daughter or relative. Anyways, I assumed that she was trained by Sonia to do eye brows in a professional manner that was biggest mistake. ( Note to self I have to stop being so trusting to people I don't know.)

She was rude and she didn't bother to frame my eye brows to my face. In addition,  she has no customer service skills what so ever!!! When someone ask you to shape up their eyebrows b/c its a little uneven doesn't = take out their arch completely and make them into two skinny straight lines that are not even shape the same.

She also had the nerve to get sassy with me.  Then talk to Sonia in a her language about me and  then have her  tell me it works best with my face structure. So I asked her would wear her brows like this? Then no comment just silence because she wouldn't.

She did an even worst job then Golden Nails  so my search continues in DC to find someone who has a mastered the art of brow. I may have to fly back to SF for Nancy at Natural Nails.

Obviously, I would never go back there again and I would be wearing bangs from now on until it grows back.

Seems like she keeps on raising the prices, based on the history of reviews.

Eyebrows = $15
Upper Lip = $8
Lower Lip = $6

Still, she's the only threader in the neighborhood, so no competition = high prices.

If you're willing to go out to Chantilly, VA, you can save a couple bucks.

Sonia and Preethi are the BEST.  I have been going to Threads since they opened.  Both women know how to shape eyebrows for your face and do it in a fast and painless way.  They are SUPER friendly and make me feel like family every time I walk into their salon.  Plus, it's great to support independent, women-run businesses in a world full of chains.

Most of the comments explain that it was painful, but I TOTALLY DISAGREE! It did not hurt at all! I think pain affects everyone differently. This was a wonderful experience and I will always get my eyebrows threaded from here on out! Sona is the best

I really wanted to like this place, since it's so close to where I live. Unfortunately, I tried 4 times to like this place, and the results were mediocre to awful.  The last time, the threader cut my eyebrow, and I was bleeding (1st time that has happened), ewww!! I was never completely happy with this threading salon, I just went back b/c it was conveniently located.

Having recently moved from nyc and chicago, where threading salons can be found on almost every street corner-, I was desperate to find a good , convenient threader when I moved to DC.

I'm pretty meticulous about my eyebrowsand have been getting them threaded regularly for the past 7 years. Sadly,  this place was just not great. I have to disagree with the others.
Although its further away, I highly recommend Okyo salon in Georgetown or Skin Saavy (roughly $17-$20) in Dupont Circle.

Thanks so much for all of your reviews - positive and negative.  I just returned from Threads and had a very positive experience.  It's true that they're not lovey dovey, but I like to get in and get out, so it worked for me.  They are very efficient and made a point of stopping midway to see if I liked the shaping, and at the end checked again.  I got there about 2 minutes after they opened, and one customer was already being taken care of and within 5 min., there were 3 more customers behind me.

Perfect for the ladies working downtown and usually can't find the time for things like this.  The whole thing, including travel time, took me about a half hour  - some time wasted going into the wrong building!  Highly recommended!

I'm such a big fan of threading, but this place got me and another friend (who happens to be Indian) very disappointed.   Unless you ask for the head lady (forgot her name) they don't thread how you instruct them to the shape you want and take off wayyyyy wayyy to much.  Not good for me because my brows are on the short side regarding length.  Also, they're expensive for a threading place.  Maybe it's because I'm from Chicago where they have a larger Indian community, but I paid 5 bucks more on average than what I would have paid in the city of chicago (yes downtown).  Threads is smart though to charge a higher amount as I don't think there are no other places in the metro area that thread.   Close to Metro (red & blue/orange lines).

On the subcontinent, threading is something women (and a few brave men) have done on a regular basis to groom their eyebrows, upper lip, and anything else you choose. It's less painful than waxing and far more thorough than tweezing. Threads is the cheapest (and best) place in the district to get great eyebrows, listen to blaring bollywood tunes, and perhaps make a friend or two. Contrary to the listing, Threads has two locations -- L Street @ 15th and U Street @ 16th.

I just moved to DC so basically I have been using Yelp to be my guide for everything. I had originally planned to get my eyebrows waxed, but after seeing all the great reviews about Threads, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did, though if it weren't for other people's comments and directions, I would have never found it.

It was very quick and painless. I am really happy with how my eyebrows turned out (not too thin), though once I got home they looked slightly uneven. I think that just may the way my brows are though, because I always seem to have that problem. I'll certainly be back, just next time I will examine them a little better before I leave.

This place is a little hard to find (it's located above a bar near Metro Center), but is well-worth the search.  This was my first threading experience and I would definitely go again.  I think the process makes your brows look great because it is more precise than waxing and a lot less pain.  If you're looking for a posh day spa, this isn't your place.  But if you're looking for a simple, cheap place that does a good job, then go here.

I've had more luck at the U street location than the L street location.  Every time I've been to the L street location, my brows have ended up either uneven or too thin.  Since when does "I want to keep the shape I have now, please just clean it up, I really like having THICK eyebrows" mean the same thing as "I would like a very thin line of hair up on my eyebrow area somewhere"?

In the end, it really depends on who is doing your brows.  Ask for the owner, or go to U street.

Oh, also, $18 for eyebrows/lip is a total ripoff.  Head off to the suburbs and get this done for under $10.  I only go here b/c it's the only threading place I know of that is not in the suburbs and it's convenient when I'm in a hurry.

update:  Yeah, the U street people messed up my eyebrows too.  They were uneven and the woman made me BLEED.  When I asked her to even things out, and I said something about the bleeding, she was totally rude to me.  I can't believe that I (and other people) consistently have the problem with them getting eyebrows too thin and uneven.  Seriously -- you're doing it hair by hair, how hard can it be?? I'm never going back, and we're down to one star.

I got hooked on eyebrow threading while living in London last year where it's available everywhere and really popular. It's quick, relatively painless (once you get used to it) and gives you a great shape that I think looks more natural and lasts longer than waxing. Waxing constantly can also stretch out the delicate skin around your eyes. Threads has the most consistent service I've found in D.C. (I used to go to Okyo and Aveda G'town where the threader was always someone different), there usually isn't too long of a wait since it's fast, and it's also at 2 convenient locations. The service isn't exactly personal, so don't expect to be pampered at this no-frills beauty spot, but the results should be worth it.

I take eyebrows very seriously. I grew up in La, lived in NYC and used to  wait till I was in either NYC or LA to have my eyebrows done.  But then I passed threads (U street) and thought I'd give it a try. My first experience was great! I'm not sure the name of the woman who did my brows but she was fast, good and the price was excellent. So I went back and made the (rookie) mistake of thinking whoever helped me would be as good. This woman was younger and did a pretty bad job-- no arch, not clean, etc. So I asked her if she could clean up the top a bit and add a bit more of an arch. I now have one eyebrow that's too thin (it looks like I'm asking you a question- but only with my left eye) and another that's fine but kinda messy.  Give them a try but make sure you know who to ask for!
