    I have a super-fantastic husband and some super-fantastic friends.

You see, my super-fantastic husband colluded with a couple of friends to best provide the Christmas gift I was not-so-subtly hinting at: a massage and (better yet) time at a spa.

Thanks to the input of Helena B and the generosity of Kate M, I received a gift certificate to Thousand Waves and the promise that they would go with me.

So for the cost of an hour massage, you also get a pre-massage hour in the spa -- hot tub, steam room and sauna -- plus as much time as you like afterward in the relaxation room, with tea, nap cubbies, magazines, comfy chairs, etc.

It was total bliss, from beginning to end. We started in the eucalyptus steam room (if you have any sort of cold or sinus problems, this will clear your issues right up... it's like being inside a Vicks humidifier), then sat in the hot tub for awhile, then the sauna, back to the hot tub...

Then it was massage time. I had Becky, and she did a great job. She didn't try to talk to me -- which is good, just tell me to flip over and listen if I have instructions -- and worked me from head to toe, leaving me quivering like jello.

After that it was time for the relaxation room -- a wonderful way to ease back into the real world. Tea, water, magazines and comfy chairs (oh, and nap cubbies). We chatted quietly and hydrated.

It's not super-fancypants, but it IS very comfortable and woman-centered. I love that. Everyone was very nice, the facilities are super clean and all in all it was just a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

So it's official: if anyone wants to really pamper me, this is the place to do it.

I went here for the first time last week, and I think I've found a home away from home.  I had a hot stone massage with Heidi, and IT WAS HEAVEN!  Hot stones everywhere, under my shoulders, between my toes, on my forehead.  I'd shared my aches and issues with her, and she was an artist working out every sore muscle.  I can't believe the massage lasted just 90 minutes, it felt like a glorious eternity.

Now, the facility is low frills-- this is not the spot to drag a gaggle of your friends and catch up on the latest gossip while getting your nails done.  This place is peaceful, very zen, and cozy.  There's a very homey-granola vibe that is exactly what I was seeking.  The nudity optional thing is pretty serious, so don't be shocked.  The space is on the smaller side, but again more warm (so warm!) and cozy than claustrophobic.

The $20 spa service is amazing, my massage was incredibly therapeutic, and I was totally plotting my next visit before I even got off the table.

Today was my first time at Thousand Waves! It was supposed to be a relaxing few hours at the spa and on with the rest of my day.. however, 8 hours later and I am still on cloud 9 feeling so refreshed, calm, and rejuvenated. I'm even breathing differently and walking lighter!

I've had several spa and massage experiences but this was by far my favorite. My lovely boyfriend surprised me with the herbal wrap + 60 minute massage and every minute of it was heaven. I came an hour early to soak in the hot tub, steamroom, and sauna. It was a really busy day and the ladies around me were a little chatty, but I was able to tune it out with the help of the eucalyptus oil and cedar oil scents. The herbal wrap smelled so good, it is a cocktail of lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, camomile, and many other divine oils. My massage with Jennifer was amazing. She pinpointed every spot I needed and 60 mins felt like 3 hours! The relaxation room had TJ's mint melange tea (my fave) and lots of chairs to kick back with magazines.

I would recommend coming here by yourself on a day off with lots of time to relax and indulge. Also bring a bathing suit if you prefer and comfier indoor sandals. Drink lots of water, turn off your cell, and relax!!

I'm convinced this place isn't real. Yes I went there and stayed for close to 4 hours with out feeling no rush out by the staff, but I'm convinced if I return it will all just have been a figment of my imagination. Nothing this glorious could ever be a real place.

I'm kind of kicking myself for not having tried this place sooner. After years at the Pain Stop, I kind of forgot what it felt like to get a relaxing and rejuvenating massage with out flinching in fear of pain or being scurried out the door afterwards.

This place was warm and inviting, the front desk ladies were nice and helpful, and the amenities themselves were wonderful! The interior of the spa area is a little dated looking as some other yelpers had stated, however, even with it being slightly dated in decor (more so the tiling if you ask me) the place is still very clean and very relaxing. Most of the time I felt 100% comfortable walking around barefoot and I am some what of a germ phoebe so that says something.

simply, simply wonderful. i'm a bit obsessed with public baths, from russian and turkish baths to mountain hot springs. and i always feel like i'm coming home to thousand waves.

i've been a spa bath visitor for five years or so, and this is a front line in my winter-survival kit. $20 for reversing the ravages of struggling to stay warm and boosting my immune system always feels like an extreme bargain.

the staff are gentle, sweet and lovely. the space is simple, but squeaky clean and welcoming. the facilities are perfect, especially the steam room.

it's really the most perfect women-only space i know. it attracts a wide array of queer and straight women. it's very welcoming to all body types, rail-thin young women and curvy matriarchs alike. and the restorative powers of steaming and sweating followed by the temple-like peace of robe-clad lounging in the relaxation room simply cannot be beat.

I didn't know what to expect so I went with the herbal wrap which came with use of the steam room, sauna and hot tub.

The front desk staff were very helpful in showing us around. Although small and basic, it has anything and everything you need!

I do wish they had a supply of spare towels in the back instead of having to run back up to the front for more and I definitely recommend bringing your swim suit and a pair of flip flops - the ones they provide aren't the most comfortable.

I'd rate the overall cleanliness a 4. The only big turn offs for me were the sandals and stained (but clean) robes they provided.

I came with a friend but we really didn't get to spend a lot of time together and couldn't talk much in the common areas. The services are done in individual rooms so it's best to come alone.

One of my favorite places on the planet, a little women-only oasis of peace and beauty.

I adore hot tubs, yet for some reason the universe has not granted me the resources to have my own. Instead, I have the next best thing: I hand over a paltry $20 to the lovely owners, and I can spend three hours using their impeccably clean hot tub, showers, cedar sauna, eucalyptus steam room, ethnic-friendly hair and skin products, and peaceful relaxation room complete with decaf green tea and magazines of all persuasions.

Luxurious yet down-to-earth. The only problem is my tendency to go to the relaxation room and promptly pass out for 2 of my 3 hours. Well, I'm not sure that's a problem.

Ladies, if you haven't been to Thousand Waves Spa, go here. Immediately.

Fellas, if you want to do something amazing for your lady friend, book her a massage here. Immediately.

Here's the deal... this is as good as it gets. The facilities are always clean, the spa area is relaxing and never over-crowded, and the staff are top notch.

I recently visited Chicago and went to Thousand Waves for a 60 minute massage and couldn't have been happier. They allow you to check in an hour before your appointment to use the spa area. AMAZING. Not only do you get to draw out your indulgent day, but by having a full hour to rotate between the hot tub, dry sauna, and eucalyptus scented steam room, you are able to relax your muscles into a blob of warm feel-good goo.

Moving on to the massage... BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH JEN. She gave me the best massage I have ever had in my life. Ever, ever, ever. During the first few minutes, she asked me what she wanted me to focus on. I told her about my horrible rock-like back tension and asked if she would spend 90% of the time on my upper back. She agreed and then left the room so I could disrobe and climb under the covers. Now, here's the thing... I have asked every single masseuse I've seen to focus on my back and they must get tired easily, because they always end up moving away. BUT NOT JEN. Dear lord, she honed in on my knots like a frat boy to a Dave Matthews concert. And thank goodness I only said 90% because when she did do a little massage on my arms and legs, it was just as frickin amazing. The next day, my back was actually sore from all of the knots that had been crushed. It's been about a week now and I still feel like I am walking on air.

I wished I still lived in Chicago just so I could save up my money and see Jen once a month. JEN, IF YOU EVER MOVE TO NEW YORK, YOU CAN STAY ON MY COUCH AND YOU CAN PAY RENT WITH MASSAGE WORK, OKAY?!

    Phew, glad that's settled.

I'm in shock. Just stunned at how amazing my experience at Thousand Waves turned out to be. My friends recommended this place to me - they had been going here for a couple of years. I put it off and put it off since I had never been to a spa before and I didn't see what the big deal was. Oh my sweet honey badger, it was spectacular!

Now this is not a fancy pants spa, but I loved that. The staff are down-to-earth, kind and professional. They don't fawn over you but yet treat you like a human being deserving of respect. My friend also told me about a program they have for women going through treatment for cancer, which she availed of - I'm not sure about the details, but I think you get to use the sauna, steam and hot tub for a reduced fee or free. Usually it is $20 for three hours, which is pretty reasonable to begin with. I love their approach to women's well being. Can we give it up for classy feminism, please? Word.

I had a gift certificate which I used for a herbal wrap and hour long massage. The herbal wrap was more amazing than I imagined. I lay there sweating and steaming in glorious herb infused cloth and then had the massage. My therapist for both was Jennifer and do yourselves a favor and book with her. She really listened to my body, I didn't really need to tell her anything more than "my mid-back hurts". From that garbled sentence uttered in a blissful stupor, Jennifer extracted the gist of what I needed and gave me the best massage ever. She has a great technique and strong hands. Gentle yet, solid. She was so good, I have no other words. She was also extremely kind and attentive throughout.

I'm sure all the other therapists are excellent as well, seeing as how Thousand Waves seems committed to the actual service they provide and not the frills that come with an over priced spa, like pretty wallpaper or putrid smelling creams and lotions that just invade your senses like a pillaging horde. Their relaxation room is simple and beautiful. It does not distract you from the blissful experience you are sure to have had. It just brings you down gently.

I would give this spa a thousand stars if I could.

I took my Mom to Thousand Waves Spa for a 3-hour relaxation break on Mother's day. It was first-come, first-serve, so we got there early.

Thousand Waves Spa charges $20 per person for 3-hour access to the whirlpool bath (jets/bubbles a-plenty), sauna, steam room, shower rooms, and relaxation lounge with free water and tea. They gave you a tour, lockers, a robe to wear while you wandered between the heat/water sources, and several towels. There were hair products, aerosol deodorant, and various disposable toiletries available for primping after a soak and a steam. The downstairs relaxation lounge had books, magazines, board games, comfortable wicker furniture, futon bed available for napping, and soothing music playing.

Everything looked and smelled so clean!  I would have felt comfortable stepping in and out of the rooms barefoot, had nice little plastic slippers not been available. The lighting was unobtrusive, the ambiance was quiet bliss, and all the patrons were respectful and polite with one another. We both enjoyed it thoroughly and it made me miss Japan with its onsen hot spring culture.

The only downside was that when we first went, the sauna was out of order. But the front desk staff lowered the price to $15 a person because of that.

I plan on going back soon and taking friends. Frankly, I could live in their whirlpool.

I really, really, really wanted to love this place but it kind of feels like just another website that really over sold itself.  We had been given rave reviews by friends who really loved this place but I felt awkward from start to finish.

I went there with a couple girls thinking it would be a really nice and relaxing evening.  My expectations were for a bigger place that would allow all of us to participate in the spas together.

It was not clear from the website if we should be in suits or naked.  My friends and I brought suits for our first visit.  There were three other women there at the time we arrived.  They were pretty much naked for most of the time.  We think they they were there for massages and used the sauna's or hot tub beforehand.

Of the three "spas," the first was a hot tub.  It was perfectly lovely.  It looked like it could fit 4 or 5 people MAYBE.  The bummer was that the rules only allowed two people at a time.  We used it together before we realized that we broke the rules.  The second was a eucalyptus steam room with eucalyptus oil added.   It was decent enough.  It helped clear the sinus' but we could barely see each other in the tiny room.  The last room was the dry, cedar sauna.  I am not sure if I am particularly irritated by cedar oil but I could not breathe very well in that room and left quickly.

Finally, there was a relaxation room where we could have tea, water and just chill out on wicker chairs.  It was relaxing but by the time we got there we were sort of done with the whole thing and worried about getting shushed.

The only reason I would go back is to try out the massage services.  Other than that, I was not really excited about the experience.  I understand quiet reflection but, as a group, it was weird.

I fell in love with this place after one visit...made an appointment for the following week before I left. What I like is that there is no attitude here at all..everyone was so nice and helpful.
The fact that you can arrive an hour prior to your service to use the saunas and hot tub was a great addition to the excellent massage I received from Nikki.
The facility is clean and quiet...the relaxation lounge is where you can hydrate yourself after treatment and rest. I literally thanked God that I found this place because it allowed me to leave all my stress behind.
If you are looking for fluff and over the top decor...don't bother coming here.
l also advise  women who want to be social in a group  to book treatments at another spa, this is just not the place for that.
Thousand Waves caters to taking care of the mind, body and soul...I will be a regular there without question.

Thousand Waves.  Ahhhh.  I get an herbal wrap and massage here four times a year.  This place has a bit of a minimalist vibe to it, but they've splurged in the key areas where it counts.  When you go in, you'll be given a robe, a key a locker, and some sandals.  You'll have about an hour to experience the facilities prior to your session:  Jacuzzi, Cedar Sauna, and Eucalyptus Steam Room.  The Jacuzzi is kept at a good temperature for most people, and the Cedar Sauna is a great place to spend a good portion of your hour--just be sure to drink plenty of water.  The Eucalyptus Steam room is way too hot for many of the women I've gone with--I love it, but can only do about 10-15 minutes before I need out.

Now, the herbal wrap is amazing.  I would recommend it for anyone who can handle lying alone in a dark room and listening to new-agey music for a half hour.  They wrap you up like a burrito, with all these amazing smelling oils, and just give you space to relax.  The massages I've received have always been great, and the therapists aren't too talky-talky, which I like.

Finally, the relaxation room.  Delicious teas, water, comfy cots for a little nap, and lots of good reading material.  I can't wait to go back again!

I've had only positive experience here, and introduced it to 2 friends who enjoyedit as well.  It's very relaxing and laid back, and the staff is great.

The massage I had was pretty good, not the best I've had, but definitely relaxing.  The facilites are small, but quiet, clean, & pleasant.  They have a whirlpool w/a max occupancy of 2 or 3, a dry sauna, & eucalyptus steam room.  They have secure lockers, after products (hairspray, body lotion, etc.), and a relaxation room where you can drink mint tea & nap.  I know the nudity throws some, and I personally opt to wear a swim suit (I don't really want to see anyone's business & don't care for them to see mine) but it's no big deal.  It seems to be about 50/50, so don't judge either way.  I still found it to be comfortable.

It's not a place for groups, though, because when women come in groups of 3 or 4, they get chatty & that's fairly dispruptive to the zen atmosphere of the place.  Go out for coffee before get your chatting out of the way or save it for later!

Thousand Waves, you made me feel like I had stepped out of Chicago and away from my worries, and more importantly, you made Mama totally happy. For that, you get 5 stars.

We got the combo wrap + 60 minute massage, which seemed like a steal for $135 (though not as much of a steal as their $20 for 3-hour use of their space/amenities deal...wow!).  While I didn't love the wrap--but that's a personal thing: I sweat too much as it is, and burritos are for eating, not for being-- the massage was the perfect blend of getting work done and relaxation.  I felt totally blissed out after the combo.

Here's what I really love about Thousand Waves:  I think that the thing that really makes Thousand Waves stand apart from many "spas" in Chicago is that it is just that: it's a SPA.  You don't just come in, get your service, and get out.  You really enter a zone of relaxation.  Between the hot tub, steam room (loooove!), sauna, a massage, a little tea (how civilized is that!?) and R&R in the relaxation room, you really get the opportunity to take some time for yourself and disconnect.

Thousand Waves might not be top of the line when it comes to material niceties, but it is, more importantly, welcoming, unpretentious, and down-right lovely.

I now understand why this place keeps being referred to as a hidden gem. It is FANTASTIC.
I arrived about 40 minutes early to my appointment and felt welcomed. I appreciated the "first time" tour of the place and explanation of available services as well. I must admit I didn't get a chance to try out either of the two saunas, as I couldn't bring myself to get out of the hot tub! I will most definitely try them when I go back.
Dwana was such a doll. I'm a little shy about my body and she made me feel completely at ease. She talked me through everything she was doing, and constantly checked to be sure I was comfortable.  Not only was I full of tension and knots, but I'm also very ticklish so I was quite the handful! I had a 90 minute massage and she worked hard the entire time. (My only previous experience at a different location, the massage got lighter and sloppier 45 minutes in.) Even after she was done, she talked me through what to expect and encouraged me to use the relaxation lounge afterwards.
The relaxation lounge was a great way to end my experience. There's comfortable little cots available to nap on, chairs with foot rests, magazines, tea and water available as well.
I was there for nearly four hours today, and even if I would have only been there for the 90 minute massage it would have been well worth the money.

This is a briliant find. An women-only spa located in Lakeview, it features massage, herbal wraps, saunas and a soaking tub. The atmosphere is laidback. Bathing suits are optional for the more modest, and I didn't see a single one worn when I was there. The facilities are small and intimate, and everyone is respectful of one another. I tend toward modesty in spas but felt completely comfortable here.

I booked a hot stone massage and loved it so much that I fell asleep during part of the 90-minute treatment. I can't think of a better recommendation than that!

The relaxation room is rather large with lots of seating. There are comfortable cots with blankets and pillows for those who want to lay down. You can get complimentary herbal tea or water to drink. For readers, a few books, magazines and newspapers are available. I have to say that, as a mom, this is a great place to chill before a massage; you get some peace and quiet that's rare at home if you have toddlers.

It's located in an older building with creaking floors, so if you are the type that needs absolute silence during a treatment, that may be a negative. It seems as though most of the massage/treatment rooms are on the second floor, with a few rooms downstairs.

Parking is tight with permit parking and meters - you need to pay even on Sundays if you're parking on Southport - everywhere. If you can take public transportation, do it.

I'll be back for sure. I'm totally hooked.

LOVED this place.  I was there with a couple girlfriends, doing the $20-for-three-hour deal, which is an exceptional value.  The staff do a great job of preserving a serene atmosphere, both by limiting capacity, and by reminding folks to keep quiet when necessary.  (As a natural loudmouth, I was really conscious of this, and instead of being offended or frustrated, wound up really embracing the quietude - it was nice.)

The facilities are really nice and clean - the eucalyptus steam room, the cedar sauna, and the jacuzzi are all fairly small (I'd say comfortable room for three or four people each, tops); I'm claustrophobic, so I had some trouble with the steam room and the sauna, just because they're small and enclosed...but I'd go back just for the hot tub and the quiet room.

As others have mentioned, it's an all-female environment, and nude-friendly (don't forget to take your towel everywhere you sit!).  They have large-size robes for non-thin women, and there's no sense of judgment...people seem pretty focused on their own experiences.

The place does fill up on weekends, so when they suggest you call ahead to make sure there's room - they're not kidding.

Thousand Waves is a reasonably priced spa with very nice amenities. It is women only as stated in the other reviews. If you come in an hour before your massage, you get full use of the sauna, steam room and hot tub. The relaxation room is full of magazines to read. There are also teas and water available.

If you get a massage, I recommend that you do not get your massage done on the upper level because you may hear some outside noise and have sunlight in the room. If you don't mind that kind of thing, then you don't have to mention it.

I did have an incident where I arrived an hour early (at noon) before my massage and got a bit of attitude from one staff member, telling me that the spa did not open for another 10 minutes. Seemed pointless as I was being patient anyway and waiting on the outside. While I was in the Relaxation Room, she proceeded to slam doors. Something like that can really ruin a visit but I figured that was an isolated incident.

All in all, this is a great place and I recommend it to anyone.

When I'm not yelping or studying you can find me at Thousand Waves.

Here's what $20 bucks gives me for three hours of serenity:
    -Hot tub
    -Eucalyptus steam room
    -Sauna
-Quiet room with beds for nap or tea while reading

Plus, I am forced to turn off from the world and shut my BlackBerry for 3 hours. You are given a robe, sandals if you don't bring one and provided with a locker at no charge. I'm hooked.
    The staff is friendly too.

Tip: Bring a bathing suit or be prepared to show it all. It's a spa.

Came here with a gift certificate from my friends.  The great staff and my  masseuse provided me with a wonderfully relaxing experience.  I will return.
Definitely arrive an hour early to take advantage of the spa and relaxation room before your massage!

I LOVE THIS PLACE !  It's my haven, my home away from home and I dream of going when I can't take time out.  I come for the $20 for three hours of Jacuzzi (did I spell that right...?) sauna and quite room downstairs where I take a nice nap on a very comfortable cot, free ginger tea (great for detoxing along with the heat of the Jacuzzi etc) and such peace, it's even quiet when they're busy.  The massages, I must say, are pretty much for people who just want to relax and be pampered.  I feel like with the several massages I've had they seem to prefer to hire people who just give gentle massages.  After at least 6 massages I've never had a truly deep tissue massage.  The best one I couldn't seem to get duplicated.  I asked for the same person, but she couldn't remember what she did. *shrug*  In any case, I'm excited every time I go, and I hate it when I have to leave.

Oh, and by the way, ***they have specially sized robes for larger women !! ***  Now that's a first !

This place is straight up the most relaxing place in all of Chicago. From the moment you walk in until you leave you feel like you're in a dream. You can get there early to use the hot tub and sauna before your massage if that's your thing. I didn't take advantage but it seemed like plenty of ladies were. I had the 90 minute hot stone massage which was so indulgent and so relaxing and so perfect in every way. It is the first time I ever dozed off during a massage, I was so relaxed and warm and calm. What really sets Thousand Waves apart is that they have a huge relaxation room for after your massage to drink water or tea, read magazines, or lay down in one of the beds and take a nap in! What a wonderful way to ease back into the real world after such a relaxing experience.

I wish I could come here every day, or multiple times a week - at least much more than the couple of times in the last 6 months I've found the time to get over here.

I had one of the best massages ever here from Heidi, who was friendly and explained what she was doing (I have back issues and she made my back feel awesome).  I've also had a just OK massage from someone else - not bad, but not great.

What I love most about Thousand Waves is the relaxation room.  It is minimalist but warm and sooo relaxing.  There are plenty of chairs, chaise longues, and blankies, and they even have little sleeping lounges with cots for naps!  Lovely.

I kind of think of this as my neighborhood spa. It is not terribly expensive, its close to my house and when I want to chill out and sit in the cedar sauna for 20 mins and not think about life this is the place. For me, it is not really a pampering spa as much of a place to relax, unwind, feel really comfortable and have body work done. I get a lot of massages with Jen and I really like her techniques. It helps a lot with my lower back pain and shoulder pain. My partner swears by the deep tissue massage with Dawana. I also use the package where you can use all the facilities and for 3 hours.

One of the things I really like about it is how affirming it is for women in all walks of life. I really appreciate all the volunteer work the spa does with the Lesbian Community Cancer Project. I have always felt very comfortable there.

I want to give this place a higher rating, because of their work with cancer patients & it's non froofy environment. I will say that the post-massage relaxation room is pretty great with its sleep cubbies,  tea, blankets, books and quiet.  The eucalyptus steam room is good too.

That said,  the staff seemed very distracted when we arrived (went with a friend) and checked us in cheerlessly. I felt more "processed" than welcomed, as I didn't once get eye contact, even when I asked a direct question.  Throughout the visit, the staff was also pretty hard to find & didn't seem all that happy when they were found.  I thought maybe it was an off day or something,  but a couple of other people I know have had a very similar experience.

As for the massage.. I personally prefer a deeper massage than I repeatedly asked for. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't as deep a massage as I have gotten elsewhere.

I love this place! I while back my bf bought me the "one day" package. Wrap, massage, sauna and steam room! AMAZZZZZING!!!!!
Now I go about once every 2 months and treat myself to an 1 1/2 massage.
the first time I went, they gave me a tour of the place. What I can do before my massage and what I couldnt do after the massage. They were pretty helpful.

I love the atmosphere here because it is not crazy girly and it is very relaxed.  I'm not the "luxe" spa kind of lady, just a good massage and a steam room type.  This spa is perfect: no unexpected frills, good service, and a hot cocoa, if you'd like, in the relaxation room.  Come here by yourself to rejuvenate after a long work week, or bring your sister for some quality time in the Japanese inspired ambiance.

If I didn't always get so chilly on the massage table, Thousand Waves would definitely get 5 stars!

I'm giving Thousand Waves an enthusiastic five stars.  Everything about it is comfortable, open, and accepting.  The massage therapists are great, the spa baths relaxing (and you can be dressed or undressed to your level of comfort), and the staff friendly and helpful.

The relaxation room may be my favorite spot.  You can bring your own book, magazine, or board game, but they also provide some.  The sleeping cubbies are great for naps and the complimentary herbal tea and water hit the spot.

I visit Thousand Waves regularly and recommend it to everyone.  I have sent several customers their way and hope to send many more.

As for the minor bad spots:

Parking - depending on time of day, it can be difficult.  If you park in front, you have to feed the meter at some point.  I advise parking on a side street (be warned it may be a hike).

Robes - they aren't great.  They are, however, more eco-friendly than robes you'll find at most spas.

Other than that, though, it really is terrific and I'll continue going back again and again.

This is truly a no frill hidden treasure!  I received a gift certificate from my daughter and have to admit that my experience exceeded my expectations.  If you are looking for high end decor....this is not the place for you...but if you are looking for a  great massage and quiet retreat away from the stresses of everyday life, this is the place for you!!!!  A very relaxing ambiance from beginning to end.  If you are a new customer you will be given a tour of the facility.  You can arrive 1 hour prior to your actual massage and spend it in the jacuzzi, Cedar Sauna or Eucalyptus Steam. You are given a locker a robe and sandals.  The facility is very clean which and the therapist that I had (Heidi) was awesome.
I thoroughly enjoyed the downtime in the relaxation room.  What a treat!  A time to relax, drink some tea and do some reading.  The great thing about this place is that they don't rush you to leave....
Thumbs up for Thousand Waves.....I will definitely be back and will recommend you to many!!!

I LOVE Thousand Waves! I've been going there for massages since 1996, and I've never been disappointed. The spa is a very peaceful place, and it's nice that the spa services all include time to relax in the spa before and in the relaxation room after your massage. I've been to other spas in the Chicago area for massages, and once you're done, you're out the door. It can be kind of jarring. I don't have to worry about that here -- I can have some time to transition from the massage back to the "real" world.

What also amazes me about Thousand Waves is that the massage therapists really keep track of me and my preferences. I don't get massages nearly as often as I'd like, so when I go in and Sarah asks me about my shoulders and remembers what kind of pressure I prefer, I feel very pampered.

This is by far the best value in the city, and my favorite way to treat myself. I highly recommend it!

I enjoyed my experience here and wanted to give a full 5 stars. Instead I'm rounding up from 3.5. I would love to go back, and the $20 spa/relaxation room deal is a great idea.

    the good
    -easy parking
    -Fabulous massage
    -Friendly and helpful staff
    -relaxation room was lovely
    -really woman centered

    the not so great
-bathrobe was kinda like wearing a canvas sack. It just wasn't soft and comfortable
-the spa pool and the sauna's were unbearably hot.

I loved the spa bath visit so much I went two weekends in a row! For $20 you can use the steam room, hot tub, and sauna for 3 hours. Me and my best friend rotated between all of the rooms and took advantage of the quiet room for a cool down. They do a great job of not admitted too many guests. The first time we were there we hardly ever ran into anyone else and had the rooms to ourselves a couple of times. We were there a Saturday morning from 11-2 each time. Its not the most glamourous of spas but it has a very comfortable atmosphere which to me is more important.  My only complaint is that there are only two showers, I think there should be more like 4.

As for the bad reviews over the "nakedness", its a spa, so would you really be surprised if you saw another naked person? And come on people, we are all women and in the most comforting environment possible!

I have been coming here for years - and I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet.

This is a spa concentrating on massages, body wraps, hydro-therapies (hot tub, steamroom, sauna) and relaxation room.  Want a facial, manicure and pedicure?  Visit a beauty salon.  I always felt rejuvenated and blissed out after a massage treatment, but over the last three years, I have been coming here more regularly because massages and hydro-treatments are helping my manage my RA better.  I usually purchase 5 massages at a time, thereby making the price a bit lower, but the current price of $90 for 60 minutes is in line with prices in the city.

All the therapists are extremely professional and for those new to professional massage therapy, they will make you feel at ease.

If you have a massage scheduled, you can come an hour early to get in a soak or a steam.  After the massage, there are futons and chairs to read, take a nap, drink some tea and relax.  If you want to just use the sauna, steamroom, etc., you can purchase a 3-hour block for a very reasonable $20.

Extra points for its Stress Management Program for Women with Cancer, which provides free spa visits and massages to women battling cancer.

Parking can be a hassle with the meters on Belmont now gone, but you may be able to find parking on Racine closer to Wellington.  When the place gets busy on the weekends, it may be noisy with  newbies and their friends.  A polite "please keep your voice down" usually does the trick.   Sisters of all sizes, ages and shapes usually go au natural, but for the more modest gals, a bathing suit is also ok to wear.

I love this place.  It has everything I look for when I get a massage and I can't wait to come back when I have some spare cash!

First off, Thousand Waves is for women only.  It has a very welcoming atmosphere and you can't help but feel comfortable and at ease right when you walk in.  The front door was locked and I had to be buzzed in, which was such a small detail but went a long way in making me feel safe and comfortable .

You're allowed to use the sauna, spa, showers, and steam room for up an hour before your appointment.  Most of the women that come here are comfortable walking around nude and you should expect that when you come.  I brought a swimsuit since I'm a little too shy for that, and ended up feeling very overdressed, although really it's not a big deal to anyone there what you decide to wear (or not wear).  I can't say enough how laid back the clientele and staff are, but I mean that in the best way.

My service was an herbal wrap and massage.  I was taken to one of the upstairs rooms that overlooks Belmont and did encounter some street noise occasionally during my service.  This didn't bother me, but if you're sensitive to that sort of thing then you may want to request a different room if possible.  I almost liked hearing the buses go by because it was a nice reminder that I was warm and relaxed and not dealing with all that crap outside.  My massage therapist was great and I felt perfectly relaxed after the service.

Onto the best part!  They have a relaxation room with napping cubbies (!!!), rocking chairs, blankets, and tons of magazines and books.  As I understand, you're permitted to stay for as long as you like after your service.  All I want to do after a massage is lay under a blanket and zone out for a while, so this was a fantastic option!  Be sure to budget some time to enjoy this part.

Overall, it's a bit pricey and services are limited, but you get what you pay for and they excel at the services offered.  I can't wait to go back!

I've found my Shangri-La! A sweetie bought me a spa day for my birthday & I had a wonderful sauna, hot tub soak, herbal wrap & a wonderful massage. As someone who stands for long periods of time, often in high heels, & walks almost everywhere, I cannot believe that I didn't look into this place sooner for relaxation & stress relief.

It's a wonderful place with a great staff. I will be back as often as possible!!!

Thousand Waves is a truly relaxing and peaceful spa! It is a hidden gem, that I found out about through using a new website, http://Urbanoffer.com! Which I highly recommend as well. The spa is very clean and has a sauna, eucalyptus steam room, and a hot tub. Thankfully, I arrived early to enjoy all of these amenities before my massage. My massage therapist, Heidi, was awesome. Very friendly and really helped my upper back and shoulders. I felt so relaxed and pain free after my treatment. Friendly staff, extremely clean, and a way to enjoy a true spa! Check out this hidden gem!
