Review Highlights
Bitchin collection of new records (vinyl). A lot of it is stuff that I already have 'cause I'm way too cool (actually, I'm a dreadfully obsessed music fan that spends an unhealthy amount of my life finding/listening/playing music), but the stuff at Thirsty Moon is stuff that no one I know has. And it's stuff that I tell my friends, "this is the best record I've heard this year," but they don't buy it.
Well, now I can just say, "go to Thirsty Moon, pull two random records, flip a coin, buy one and you can tell me what to buy next."
Only downside here is the used record collection, which isn't very strong.
Oh, one more plus, they have a cool door (which my friend pointed out, I was too stoked about the records to notice).
I finally made my first ever stop to Thirsty Moon, and what a pleasant surprise it was. Although the shop is small, it makes up for it by stocking really great records, and the store has a nice cozy vibe and friendly staff. I wish there were more record stores like this place!
Most genres are represented at Thirsty Moon, but mostly in small numbers and much of their stock consists of sealed reissues. Not a bad thing necessarily, but not great if you're someone like me looking for used vintage material. I was able to grab one used classic rock album that's fairly hard to find, so I was happy. The price was very reasonable too. Fortunately Record City is just a block away and fills the used record niche just fine.
If you're looking for some top-notch reissue material, then this is the place to go! Excellent prices, a friendly atmosphere and a superb collection of only great quality music on vinyl.
A very small record store. But fortunately for the niche market they cater to, they have a true passion for what they like. What they lack in quantity they make up for in quality.
Although the jazz selection (on vinyl) had 30 records, I would have bought 25 of the records they had!
I love walking into record stores and feeling as though I am walking into someone's record collection. When I walked into TMR, I felt as though I walked into the minds of everyone who worked there...strange, gov'nor.
Seeing my 18 month old boy dancing to garage rawk...priceless!
A brief message to fan of Thirsty Moon Records who may be spending time in San Francisco: you should check out Aquarius Records in the Mission.
A brief message to fans of Aquarius Records who may be spending time in San Diego: you should check out Thirsty Moon Records in Hillcrest.
Now, I'm not going to say that the two places are the same. Aquarius runs a online store and has a larger stock of CDs. Thirsty Moon is way more spacious and perhaps better organized, making it much easier to navigate. But the two share, for example, a love for things metal and black, death, or sludgy. I didn't peruse Thirsty Moon's entire stock, but rest assured that there's more than that-- and I get the impression that it's all hand-picked in some manner.
This is the kind of record store that I hope anyone with an ounce of music appreciation will continue to shop at for years to come. I would love to stop in again the next time I'm in San Diego.
I was pretty frustrated and fed up with this place when on three separate occasions I went there during their normal business hours and they were closed with no explanation on the door.
Once there was a sign that said they would be back in 15min [or whatever the amount of time was] so I went across the street to Record City for 30min, came back and they were still closed! So I waited outside for 15 more min. and they never opened. I was pretty pissed off at this store at this point.
I'll go in there every once in a while to see what they have, but most of the vinyl albums in there are re-prints but still good. Everything is priced pretty high, but just like your Mama told you, you get what you pay for.
For me, this is a perfectly curated shop. It's easy to get overwhelmed in record stores, and Thirsty Moon takes care of this by offering a manageable stock that is chock-full of gems. The only problem is deciding what to buy since so much of it is so good.
I came in search of something exciting and what I found was truly amazing. Thirsty Moon might be small, but it packs a punch!
T. Moon breaks all the rules and it knows it. From urban beats to country soul, this place has got you covered. Absolutely!
Best vinyl in San Diego, hands down. It even has music you can't download on the internets.
So clean out your ear wax and come on down to Thirsty Moon.
And of course, this is certainly an underrated piece of California's Gold.
The conversation usually goes a little something like this:
(either via email or on the phone)
Me: Do you guys have Kyuss "sons of kyuss" demo
Them: Yes and on vinyl
Me: Woah!
Them: We also just got in this cool Arktis vinyl
Me: Woah!
Them: Also a Gories albumn youll prolly like as well
Me: Woah!
The music is rare, the prices arent cheap but fair and the guys are cool as hell.
I love this place!! They have the best selection in 50's, 60's, 70's soul, garage, and punk, etc. The staff is very friendly and helpful with advice on records and bands. My only gripe is that I wish they would carry a selection of traditional rockabilly on vinyl.
Way too cool for me, and mean that in the most complementary terms possible. TONS of music you're not going to find anywhere and lot from around town.
Guys are pretty cool too, but always keep me waiting for 5 minutes outside. I like the hand painted skate decks they had inside the wall.
alot of obscure records that are pretty much guaranteed to be good. Just tell the dudes what your into, and they'll help you out real good like.
A record store hidden in the alley behind Rite-Aid in Hillcrest has got to be good--and it is. Thirsty Moon has tons of vinyl--anywhere from $10 to $30--in all kinds of crazy genres. They've got garage, punk, soul, metal and tons of krautrock (wish I had to Google; it's a genre of psychedelic or avant garde electronic music originating from West Germany).
They've got a small selection of CDs, too, in all of the same crazy genres.
Do you like weird obscure punk reissues? Mind-melting psych? Bootlegs and bad live records? This is the place for you! I go there to oogle at the This Heat record they have on the wall and sometimes to buy a few things. If you frequent Record City of Taang, you should make the trip down the block to say "hi". They have a lot of gnarly metal too!
Awesome record store for the rare and interesting music. A true gem!!
Even though I'm not so much into the kind of music they carry there, I like the small-store feel, and the people here are friendly and helpful. I enjoyed diggin through their bins.
This is a really cool store, and I feel like I should be in love with it, but I tend to come in, take a lap, and leave. I see some albums that look interesting, but you can't listen to them (that I know of), and they're not cheap enough for me to want to buy taking a stab in the dark. It's a great shop, and you should check it out, but it definitely caters to a certain niche market. If you're looking for something rare and unique to expand your horizons, you will find it here.
It's like fudge...dense, small, and incredibly sweet. I could seriously go in, pick up any record, buy it, take it home, and it would be something interesting. Ethiopian 70s rock to avant jazz to 90s San Diego Gravity Records screamo to Neu! and everything in between. It's seriously good for the adventurous (and serious) vinyl collector...like myself.
I love Thirsty Moon, not only because the receipts & purchases are handwritten into a log, but because their selection kicks ass. Lots of unique vinyl finds & decent prices for the rarities that Thirsty Moon houses. It's a lime-green interior-ed hole in the wall, where one will often find a "be back in 5 minutes" sign dangling from the front door. But, seriously... it's worth the wait!
A great tiny little record store in an alley in Hillcrest. When no one else had the Dan Sartain CD I was looking for, they all told me to go to Thirsty Moon. And they had both of his CD's. Awesome. Yeah, very small, but a cool vibe and they have the random stuff there, so go support them!
A very small store stocked with cool obscure LP's (Indie/Psychedelic/Garage/Punk/Metal...). One of a kind in San Diego - check it out!
i was introduced to thirsty moon by a friend who would always come shop here when he visited san diego. it's a small record shop, maybe more like a record boutique. they don't have a ton of records, but what they have is quality. i've gotten a few dance distaster movement records, and i found my first sharon jones record here by chance. since then i've turned many different people on to sharon jones. thanks thirsty moon!
