Neighborhood: EastwoodWe went just because I'd read good things about their banh mi and it was well worth the trip. I see banh mi as a good excuse to eat half of a baguette and with a large sandwich ($3.50) that's what you're going to get, a foot-long toasted baguette filled with BBQ pork (or at least that's what we ordered), carrots, cucumber, cilantro and jalapenos (if you want 'em). It's hard these days to get a filling, semi-healthy lunch for two under $10 but not at Thiem Hung. Plus, the guy working the counter was super friendly, he wanted to know where we heard about the place (Yelp.com, baby), what we were up to today, and he even said he was impressed (or maybe it was just suprise that I took to mean he was impressed with my eating abilities) that I ate all the jalapenos in my sandwich (let's be friends!). I'm looking forward to going back and trying some other items off their menu, that's if I can stray from the banh mi.

This place is a real find. The place is small but the owner is very friendly and the service is always good.
If you like Vietnamese style sandwiches, they have some of the best around, and they come in two sizes: regular and large, and you can double the meat for a dollar more.
My favorite dish is the Cantonese style fried eggs with rice flour served with preserved turnips. It's a little like the Banh Xeo, but lighter and smaller, a good appetizer or side dish to compliment your sandwich.
Oh, yeah, if it's you turn to get lunch for your coworkers, buy 5 sandwiches here and they'll give you the sixth one free.

Great place, used to eat there alot as a student at UH, and i just went back after 10 years. Still the best! Great Banh Mi sandwiches as well as rice and noodle dishes. Excellent soup, better than the midtown eateries. The midtown places use too much MSG. Also prices are on par with the bellaire restaurants, very reasonable.
Great for lunch, but kitchen closes early at 5pm, so place your order to go before then if you want to grab something for dinner.
check out their website, its clean and easy to navigate.

Best Vietnamese sandwiches outside of the "new" Chinatown (Bellaire). This place is awesome because its close to downtown and the sandwiches are just amazing. It looks a little shabby on the outside, but don't let that fool you. Highly recommended.
They are closed on Sundays but they are open Saturdays at least.

Excellent sandwiches, the quality and freshness of the bread and vegetables is very consistent, and the atmosphere is excellent inside. The sandwich prices just went up from 2.00/3.00 to 2.50/3.50 for a small and large sandwich - still an awesome price. The spring rolls (order fresh ones, not the togo ones on the counter) are tasty and fresh as well.
They offer Pho soups and other dishes, but I always stuck with tofu spring rolls and a tofu sandwich which I think beats all of the other sandwich shops in the area in taste and freshness.
They also take credit cards now ($10 min.) instead of cash only. Stop by and grab a sandwich at this place, you won't be disappointed!
