Fudge, this place is great!
Two words: Lemon curd pancakes.
Two more words: Mickey Mouse pancakes.
Two more words: Yummy.
Even though I live way the heck out in Fairfax, this will be my new go-to weekend breakfast place. -

I wish I'd discovered this place much sooner, it's delicious and reasonably priced. It was pretty busy when we came in but it did not take long for us to be seated. The servers were friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was very casual. A great place to come with a few friends for a good meal.
Most importantly, the food was amazing. I was torn between ordering breakfast or lunch but once I received my free french toast for checking in on Yelp I decided on breakfast.
The Theresa and Johnny's Blackwell Eggs Benedict was delicious and worth the price. I loved my choice though the other things my friends ordered (the breakfast burrito, the burgers, etc) were also pretty enviable. They serve a good amount of food for the price and I am thinking I will want to try their burgers next time though who knows since I really enjoyed the breakfast items. Regardless, I will definitely come back for more and introduce more people to it. -

In A Nutshell:
*Visited a friend in San Rafael and she took us this local breakfast spot in downtown.
*Make sure you do the Yelp! check in here, so you can get a FREE French Toast, which was okay, but not great.
*I ordered a custom-made omelet which was huge and a very big side of grits (love these from living in the Dirty South for a few years).
Overall, the place was packed and the wait wasn't very long. The service was really good and I plan to come back again. -

Why haven't I come here before? Great food and a decent price? This place is awesome!
So I came here for lunch with the sis. She ordered the breakfast burrito (potato hash, cheese, eggs, avocado, special sauce and some other ingredients) and I ordered the Ruben sandwich with tater tots and a banana milkshake.
The ruben was easily one of the best I have ever had in the north bay. My only complaint is that some of the pastrami was difficult to chew and I (unfortunately) found myself having to rip off pieces of the pastrami. The tater tots were your standard tater tots. But, it definitely added to the whole comfort food experience.
Sis let me try some of her breakfast burrito. It was super tasty and she really liked it but I thought it could benefit from the addition of some type of meat.
We shared the millkshake. Now normally, I'm hesitant to order banana milk shakes as some places just use artificial banana flavoring (to me, it tastes horrid) bu this milkshake was super delicious and tasted like fresh bananas. I was impressed.
The atmosphere is really chill. I definitely got the vibe that this place was a neighborhood joint. It's easy to feel relaxed. The service was pretty good too and the staff seemed friendly enough.
In short: Great food, price is okay, cash or check only, I recommend that you stop by and try this local spot. I'm already planning my next visit. -

Been here a couple times so far, and had the burger and turkey melt., which were both tasty and well cooked.
The atmosphere is definitely eclectic with all sorts of decorations, and signs warning of cell phone use lol.
They seem to have every hot sauce invented lined up on their bar. 4 stars just for that.
Cash only.Listed in: Spicy Food, Marin County

San Francisco, CA
We dined here today as the location is half-way between my mother's house and our own. It was easy to find parking just across the street for her, and around the block in a public lot for us.
She had the Crab Cakes Benedict, I had the deep-fried French Toast with a side of sausage, and he had the Biscuits & Gravy with eggs on the side.
The Benedict was amazing. The crab cakes were flavorful, the Hollandaise sauce was fresh. No bread underneath, but none was needed with the breading on the cakes. She had the homefries as a potato option. They were well-done and flavorful, a good complement to the meal.
The French Toast was good, too, but totally decadent and not something that you could ever eat in large quantities. There were two pieces -- basically, one slice of bread cut in triangular halves -- deep fried. With syrup and butter, it was like eating an unglazed donut. Fabulous but very rich. The sausages added a savory touch. By the end I was stuffed!
The Biscuits & Gravy, on the other hand, were too much for him -- three biscuits, tons of gravy...it was just overwhelming. The flavor was strong, too. He really prefers the creamier and less meaty version of that dish, so his review was just "so-so."
All of us enjoyed looking at the decor during our visit, and found the wait staff to be attentive and kind (unlike some previous reviewers have reported). A good time was had by all. We will definitely return. -

San Rafael, CA
Good food, but consistently heinous service.
Almost every single time I've been there with friends the service has ruined the dining experience for everyone. In fact, it usually becomes the focal point of the entire meal, which detracts from the quality of the food.
I'm not quite sure why the servers are always so incredibly rude and bitter towards their costumers, but it really sucks and makes what would be an otherwise delightful restaurant incredibly unwelcoming.
Tip for the owners: hire some new wait staff. -

I've been a fan of T& J's for years now. I tend to stay far away from the San Rafael area due to the lack of ability to drive/park/not receive a parking ticket. But, having said this... I'll go to San Rafael just to have breakfast at T & J's. Parking is usually available in the lot around back. As well, I go alone, so that I can walk past the 10 people waiting in line for a table and plop myself right down at the counter and be fed and gone before said group even get's an order in. Yuuup. And I thank you...

First time for me and I'm impressed. Great atmosphere, excellent service.
I had a cheeseburger & fries. Burger was cooked medium rare like I asked & had good flavor. Fries were crisp and delicious. Ketchup is served in tall plastic squirt bottles A+. -

My girlfriend and I haven't had a nice brunch in Marin yet and have been wanting to try this comfort brunch place on 4th Street for a while, ever since Sol Food used it's dining room in this transition. While parking on a Saturday morning isn't free, and there were lines running out the door, that didn't detour us from giving it a try.
I ordered the Irish Highrise (not on the menu) which was pretty much an Eggs Benedict over hashbrowns. It was delicious and a great combo I wouldn't have expected. Big portion sizes too! Props to the server who suggested it.
They've got a lot of menu options that I want to try and the service was great despite being really busy. There's a home-y vibe to the place that's extremely comforting, which only adds to the charm. I can't wait to come back!
Food: 8/10
Service: 9/10

I don't know what restaurant these other reviewers went to, but our experience was waaaaay different. The sad thing is we were so looking forward to a good breakfast out and the other reviews were so great. We also have just moved to San Rafael 2 months ago so we are trying to find "our" breakfast place.
Anyway the woman and the young man there were rude, unfriendly and not only to us! When we asked her for strawberry jam she said "We don't have it." I said do you ever have it and she said "Never." And rudely offered no explanation for a friendly chit chat. Later when an elderly couple came in near closing time, she told them they only had 2 minutes to order?!?!
The food was the worst we ever had; my father, who ordered the Denver omelet scrambled, struggled to find any eggs while sifting through it. He also ordered well done hash browns which were mushy and unseasoned. My home potatoes were burnt and my eggs that I ordered well done, looked and tasted as if they were scraped of the grill. The full stack of pancakes we ordered were thin and tasteless and not worth 6.95. We had to ask for our coffee and ice tea refills.
Unfortunately I would NEVER go back here. Horrible horrible service and food. -

Everything was excellent!
FYI - All the pancakes are the same style, which they call Swedish, and they're the size of the dinner plate they come on. -

How do you describe the happiness Santa brings a good little boy or girl on Christmas morning? How do you describe the love felt in a crowd when the newlyweds say "I do?" How do you describe the feeling of relief when you finally get to a toilet on the longest roadtrip ever?
That intangible, indescribable awesomeness is what I wish I could write about Theresa & Johnny's. If it were a man, I'd make sweet love to it, marry it, and blow it everyday until death to us part.
My favorite is the breakfast burrito. It's delicious, filling, always rocking and fabulous every time. Their coffee is warm and tasty - I drink it black and love every cup - even when I get to the 5th... or 8th... Mimosas! Oy, let me tell you about the mimosas... YUM. Anytime I can drink with my breakfast, the day is off to a good start.
Then there's the staff... I sometimes wish I could stay there all the time and trade my friends for these employees. Once, our waitress heard my friend and I debating about whether or not we wanted a pancake for dessert. When she brought out our meal, she included a little mini banana pancake for us to try - what a doll! You just don't get service like this anywhere else...
Get there early or expect to wait on weekends around 10/11AM, but definitely don't miss this Downtown San Rafael gem. -

BEST EVERYTHING!! Eggs, Omelets, pancakes, French toast, shakes, burgers.. They knock it out of the park every single time!! Whenever I have friends or family visiting I always take them here for breakfast. It gets crowded and it is cash only, but there isn't another breakfast joint in the county that comes close to touching this place!

Review from Garett T.
The food, setting and same-day small-world connection afterward are what make this review inevitably great. I'll start with the food:
It was something I'd never tried before: eggs benedict, on a croissant-like muffin with tomatoes, bacon, and lemony hollandaise sauce. Liked it quite a bit. Ate there with my parents, and we were all stuffed. OJ was room temp, but fresh squeezed.
The setting was a tad bar-esque, with neon lights and (of course) the bar seating area. Loved our spider-shaped salt & pepper shakers! We sat at a table, but I'm sure on another occasion with a different crowd, the bar could be a destination. I hear they have mimosas...
What makes this a 5-star review was the random act that connected us directly back to the restaurant later that day. My family went looking at homes to live in nearby, and purely by chance, the first home we decided to see had a realtor who happened to also be the owner of the restaurant! He mentioned it by name before we ever revealed it... Who knew? -

I wanted to deduct a star because of the "cash-only" element, but it was just too good. The only other near-negative was that the servers were only adequate. They were a couple college guys who were less than excited to be there, but they got us everything we needed.
On to the positives!
The location and environment were awesome. Definitely had a hipster feel, with the funky decor on the walls and some odd furniture. It was fun.
The food was unbelievable. I went with 2 friends, and we tried as many things as we could, since this was just a pit-stop on a road trip and we probably wouldn't be back for a long time. The swedish pancake was as big as the plate and phenominal. The crispy french toast was ridiculously good (basically deep-fried french toast). The breakfast omelet was good, and the frsh fruit that came with it was to impressive and delicious (except the REALLY sour grapefruit that my friend thought was an orange). The "loaded" tater-tots were amazing too, with the various cheeses, salsa, and sour cream. The orange juice was freshly squeezed, and the root beer float was tasty. I recommend all of the above.
GO HERE! NOW!!! -

So we have been checking out the local breakfast places lately you know, Half Day, Woodlands, Dipsea, Toast. Those places are OK in general but nothing really special. Prior to our recent adventures we would just do some coffee places or maybe Whole Foods for Saturday and Sunday morning food. This place is large step above the rest in my mind and they are not as fancy in a very good way.
Entering into this time warp it reminds me of ail old col garage. With exposed brick, high ceilings and garage like antiques on the walls. The tables are spread out nicely and they are on top of a nice woof floor. The kitchen is placed nicely above the counter and while you can see them work, you get the flavor and not the whole theater. The menu is a price point less then those other spots and the menu is sought of similar yet, they do have grits and a choice of hash browns or home fries along with the other fine choices.. We ordered a couple of omelets are they were packed full of cheese and meat. I don't mean the tiny pieces you may get at the Woodlands Cafe but jammed packed as far as three eggs could take it. The quality is pure first rate. The service sought of matter of fact but very cool with the right kind of touch for a place like this. They get it.
So, any downside. Yes. Cash only. C'mon. Get a merchant account. Everyone has them. Other than that, this is the best of its kind in Marin, no doubt in my mind. -

The deep fried french toast is amazing, I highly recommend it. This is a casual breakfast / brunch joint and it has an eclectic and eccentric ambiance. Not my favorite place for eggs, but really everything here tastes pretty darned good.

Fun and funky breakfast place with friendly service.
We tried the crab cake benedict which was ok. Not great. The crab cakes were way too salty so it was hard to finish both. The hollandaise sauce was thick and gloopy. Not really hollandaise and not really appetizing.
The hash browns were interesting (in a good way). They were square and looked like you could just pop them in a toaster.
Will come back again when we're back in the neighborhood but will definitely get something else. -

The specials are unique and wicked good. She had the breakfast scramble made with corn bread. It was killer. We took our friend who orders nothing but BLT's. (His last wish is to be buried in bacon). He was impressed, which is not an easy feat.
I had another special which was the Swedish pancakes made with tiny bits of granny smith apples. Mmmm! Honey cakes they called 'em. I get that pancakes are primarily a vehicle for me to ingest sugar disguised as maple syrup, but it is hard to find thin pancakes with such a good flavor anywhere in Marin.
The place has great decor and plenty of space between tables. Service could spruce it up a notch, and they could accept more forms of payment, but overall a worthy visit. -

Comfort Food + Funky atmosphere + great staff = awesome! Been here a few times and met a friend here for breakfast this morning. And yes, it was awesome as always!
There were several people standing outside, in the pouring rain, waiting for a table so we got our names on the list and in less about 10 minutes were called.
The place is decorated with a bunch of time-warp of eclectic collectibles from the Simpsons action figures still in their plastic packaging to Chinese checker boards, to dishes in all sorts of sizes... Every table's even got its own unique salt & pepper shakers. Heck, the TV in the back was even playing some home-movie-esque feature from the mid 50's showing a family out on a camping trip.
I really love coming here on a cold and rainy weekend morning because the decor and the upbeat staff just make things all snuggly and cozy, setting the tone for the food.
And OMG the food. It's just some of the best comfort food I've ever had. I got my typical eggs, bacon and potatoes - the bacon? Yeah - five pieces, the longest bacon I've ever seen (like ten inches or more each) - perfectly crisp. And the potatoes, I opted for the tater-tots.
Yes - tater tots are a choice as breakfast potatoes. Who can't love that? And while I didn't get pancakes today, you've got to check out their ginormous pancakes - bigger than your plate. And the choices and options are just wild.
My hat's off to the staff at Theresa & Johnny's for consistently creating and maintaining a funky fun place for a hearty meal in downtown San Rafael... -

I can see myself giving this place a five star review if I go back. I had the greek sandwich (it was a special), and I was very happy with it. I got the garlic mashed potatoes and those were really good too. Overall I was pretty happy with the food and service. If I had one complaint it would be that they don't take debit/credit cards. I think if I find myself in the area again I will come back.

I've eaten breakfast here several times and enjoyed it each time. I like the blueberry pancakes, and my friend always orders the banana pancakes, which she swears by. the deep fried french toast is great as well. Unfortunately the space is quite crowded, and if you come at peak hours you might have to wait a few minutes for a table.

Review from John M.
Thank you Veronica H. for recommending Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food. In my review for another breakfast spot in San Rafael, I lamented not knowing any really great places in the Bay Area to get a killer breakfast/ brunch. After reading that review, she sent a note to give this place a try.
Arriving early in the afternoon on a sunny Saturday, there were a few open tables so the girlfriend & I were seated as soon as we walked in. Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food is decorated haphazardly, but appealingly, with an eclectic mixture of Americana & other random stuff. Service was friendly & attentive. It took me a few extra moments to pick out what I wanted from their expansive breakfast choices, but the girlfriend locked on to her selection instantly.
Crab, in any of its many forms, is a favorite of hers & eggs Benedict is 1 of her favorite breakfasts, so the Crabcake Benedict was a natural choice. She picked Cheese Grits for the side & added a Mocha. I settled in on the Denver Omelet with Homefries & a coffee. I noticed Biscuits & Gravy on the menu & had to have that too.
It wasn't long before all of our food was brought to our table & it was a lot of food. Everything was big portions. Our server pointed out their extensive hot sauce selection & I was pleased. The girlfriend said she really liked her Crabcake Benedict. Additionally, she said the Cheese Grits started off bland but was easily fixed by a little salt.
My Denver Omelet, though massive like everything else, was just ok. The ham in the omelet was diced up ham lunch meat slices & I thought that was a miss. Little cubes of ham steak would've been better. The Homefries were good, but it was the Biscuits & Gravy that really made this breakfast for me. The biscuits were hearty, fluffy & flaky. The gravy was uniquely flavorful & delicious. Call me simple, but I love good Biscuits & Gravy.
After packing away as much as we could, we boxed up our leftovers & settled the check. An ongoing complaint of mine are cash only businesses & Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food is cash only. Overall, though it's not up to the level of my all-time favorite breakfast/ brunch places, Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food is a cool spot to grab some breakfast. I like it better than most other breakfast/ brunch places in the Bay Area & am interested in trying out more of their menu. Thanks again Veronica H. for the tip. I will be back. -
Review from Toni M.
I hadn't bookmarked this and none of my friends had reviewed it, but Alan did some of his usual stellar research and found it. It's a scant block from Guaranteed Alterations. We're having an early dinner w/ friends tonight so brunch made much more sense than lunch. After dropping off my car to be serviced Alan and I drove over to Theresa & Johnny's. We found easy street parking on Lincoln.
When we walked in there were a few people seated but it wasn't crowded. We were greeted and invited to choose a table. The space is much bigger than Lundy's, which felt cozy and crowded. Although it's been open only 11 years in August it feels and looks as if it's been here forever and I mean that in the best possible way. We chose a table right night to a bookshelf that was full of cookbooks. Atop the bookcase was an ancient mixer w/ a juicer attached and other old kitchen gadgets and dishes adorned the walls and shelves. A pennant celebrating bacon hung on the wall by us along w/ more conventional pennants. There were several battered Chinese checkerboards hanging on one wall and everywhere we looked there was something else cool.
Our waiter was a casually attentive dude w/ handsome tattoos. He brought us menus, Alan coffee and me tea. They serve Mighty Leaf. They serve crispy French toast, which intrigued me. You can order 3 pieces or 2 and I ordered 2. For another $2.95 you can order a fresh fruit bowl and for $2.95 more you can order bacon or sausage. I ordered a fruit bowl and sausage. Alan was debating between corned beef hash and a Denver omelet and the waiter was very helpful, describing how they made their hash and telling Alan when he was a customer that's what he would come in regularly to order. Alan went w/ the hash, despite it being cut up into small bits, and home fries. He had a choice of hash browns, home fries, grits or tater tots. They had fresh squeezed orange juice and so we ordered a glass to share. It was sweet and delicious. The French toast was crispy and wonderful. Not what you'd want often because its deliciousness was clearly not healthy. The sausage was tasty, but the texture was a little soft for me. It reminded me of the English breakfast sausages we had there in the 80s. Not a good association and I'd probably order the bacon next time if I ordered any meat. The fruit bowl was spectacularly good, w/ sweet halved strawberries, chunks of peaches, a slice of grapefruit, pieces of pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew. Alan was very pleased w/ his corned beef hash and the taste I had of it was marvelous, among the best I've had. He reported the home fries were OK, not fabulous. Coffee was refilled more than once. I had a good sized pot for my tea so I was set. It was a very good breakfast and I would come back again.Listed in: Breakfast/Brunch

I am only rating the French Toast - Deep Fried - because once I had that i have never had anything else!! It is that good. I always swear I am going to order something else but when I sit down and see orders of the Fried Delight pass by me, I give in and always order the same thing. I recommend ordering the real maple syrup to go with it. They charge extra, but worth it. Who wants fake corn syrup on such a treat? My only disappointment is they bring you the syrup cold and can't heat it for you as they do not have a microwave in the place. I understand (I guess) the "we don't cook with a microwave", but how about to heat some syrup? Cold syrup on hot, yummy, delicious French Toast from heaven:(

Review from Bryce B.
Rock solid breakfast joint and a perfect place to go when coming back to the Bay Area after a wine country weekend. This a pretty funky place, decorated with tons of kitschy trinkets.
Crispy french toast and the breakfast burritos are winners. So is the huge inventory of different hot sauces. Service is efficient, if not exactly endearing, but I chalk that up to a bustling dining room.
Definitely a place I'd go back to. -

All items on menu are available at all times. Excellent comfort food. I especially like 'The Bacon Bleu burger'. I have been to this restaurant on many occasions and have received outstanding customer service each time. Just be sure to bring cash as they don't take credit cards or debit cards...but it's worth it. I like the music they play in the background too...Kind of a hip environment. Quaint and classic with a bit of flair. Oh yeah, they serve grits too which is hard to find in this area...southern touch.

I've known about this place forever, but only came here once in a while until recently.
The past few months, I've been coming on a weekly basis, and could not be happier about it. Whether I'm just stopping in for some iced coffee and bacon and eggs or a full-fledged meal consisting of french toast, potatoes and the works, the food is ALWAYS delicious and the staff is ALWAYS friendly and helpful.
I love the food, love the cooks, love the staff. Love this place. Not to mention an awesome hot sauce selection and hip retro decor. I've found home. -

There are no words to describe how much I love this place.
I will provide what I can though:
Get the Crispy French Toast if it's your first time going, it's what got me hooked.
Take a moment to admire all the kitschy little signs and collectibles in the place.
Read the ticker, it's long but it's something to do while you wait for food and it'll provide a good laugh.
Notice the MANY hot sauces available (They have Crystal sauce too!!!)
Don't expect to get seated right away on the weekend since it's usually packed and there are no reservations. Best time to go is later in the morning on week-days
This place is cash-only, like most local places so don't get heated!!!(I used to work in food and seriously people, cash is a must, who doesn't carry cash? *oh I guess if you're in debt, LOL)
Last but not least, ENJOY the food and tip, the waiters are nice folks. -

I love this place. I don't live nearby, but it's worth driving past the greasy spoon by my house, jumping on the 101 for the food. The staff is really personable and the food is served up pretty fast. I dig the no cell rule and the funky decor.
So, let's talk about the food. Like a lot of people, I love pretty much anything with bacon, butter, or cream. I love carbs. I love fried carbs. A lot of brunch places you go to serve up their food drenched in sauces, soggy from grease, or use lower quality ingredients. Not this place, though. They have unique items on their menus, great specials, yummy milkshakes. Oh - they also make home fries the way I do.
Seriously, every time I go here, I am perfectly content. -

The food is okay, as breakfast items go.
I ordered the special benedict of the day, the Nor Cal, which consisted of bacon, avocado, pico de gallo and eggs on a toasted engligh muffin with hollandaise sauce. It came with a choice of home fries, hashed browns or grits. I went with the hashed browns, which were great - crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. The NorCal bendict was okay, but not something I would go out of my way to order again. The sauce was on the thick side, the consistency of mayonnaise, and the bacon was overcooked for my taste. What really annoyed me was this cost of this dish - $13.25! For eggs and bacon on an english muffin. Huh? Really? Considering that all the other benedicts cost less by $2 or more, including the crab cake benedict, which is the most expensive benedict on the regular menu. Seriously? The party next to us ordered the same item and had a similar reaction.
As a plus, the small fruit cup I ordered on the side was pretty good and contained peaches, pineapples, strawberries, bananas and grapefruit. The fruit was sweet, ripe and freshly prepared.
My friends ordered the french toast and the BLTA (it comes with cream cheese!) and both enjoyed their food. I thought the french toast was a wee bit overcooked.
Service was okay, but could see a bit of improvement. I realize that we were there during the morning rush, but still did not have the easiest time getting our server's attention. I believe there were only two servers working the floor while we were there.
One the plus side I love the decor and their extensive collection of hot sauces.
Fred's in Sausalito is still my favorite breakfast joint in the area. -

Amazing french toast...Monte Cristo sandwich was a bit bulking in the batter but tasty. Lost 2 star for so so service. I asked for a soda refill and ketchup. I got the refill and ketchup but the waiter had to comment that there was ketchup at another table that I could have grabbed. A 2nd refill was not going to happen. Was never asked how everything was or if we needed anything else.

I ate at T&J's last Saturday for breakfast. I ordered the big breakfast burrito and a side of their famous french toast. The breakfast burrito was HUGE and came with a side of fruit. The fruit assortment was delicious (figs, pears, champagne grapes, plums.. The breakfast burrito was big enough to share. The french toast was really delicious and not too sweet. It tasted a little bit like a mix between a donut and fried food from the fair. My husband ordered the special benedict and it was also very tasty. There are not very many good breakfast/brunch places to go to in this area, highly recommended for the San Rafael area.

First time here....It was definately comfort food. I never eat French toast but I had to try it because of all of the rave reviews. I loved it!
I also had the crab cake florentine which came with hash browns. I ordered a side of brown gravy OMG. Yum!
The place does get a bit crowded and is noisy but the service was good. It's worth it.
I would go back for sure. My friend said he would definately be bring a lot of his dates there. -

Only place I'll buy pancakes any more. The swedish pancakes are always thin, light, and fluffy. Service is great and I love the decor! Nice neighborhood restaurant.
