Shoes!
The salesgirls here were totally adorable and way more fashionable than I am. They have a great eclectic selection of...well..everything. Hats, shoes, bags, tops. The shoes even say on the bottom which sizes they have left which was helpful. I bought a super cute pair and had to stop myself from also buying a Betsey Johnson purse.
Why I like this place:
They take AmEx.
Shoes.
They are next to an awesome tapas bar.
Shoes
They have cute purses
Shoes.
The vibe in here is really nice too; it should have been annoying but it really wasn't. There were even enough guy-type clothes here that had I been with a guy friend, it would have been fun to stop in and just try on fun stuff.
Please open a location in SoCal!
I love this store. I've been to all the other ones in Burlingame and Mountain View. Janelle is the go-to person whenever I'm at the Valencia store.
She's always so friendly and willing to help out any way she can.
I love the fact they carry most of my favorite designers: Tulle, Kersh, BB Dakota, Carmina, Audrey, Brookadelphia, Goorin, Spiewak, Tom's, etc.
It goes without saying that Therapy has some insane threads for both X and Y chromosomes... but it seems like the ladies get a better deal at this place than us gents. With the exception of a few punny shirts on the clearance rack, you really can't find anything worth buying for less than $90... and that's just for a Ben Sherman plaid shirt I can pretty much buy anywhere in the city. They also have rad jackets and sweaters, but all are north of $100, and some are in the $200 range. If you're a baller, good on ya... but I don't have the scratch to make purchases here more than once or twice a year.
On the other hand, my girlfriend found some sweet lady duds in the $40 or $50 range, which is a pretty great deal.
When I have some cizzash burning a hole in my pocket, I'd totally be willing to shill out a few ducks on some of their attire... but alas, it's San Francisco and when you're spending $3 on medium-sized cups of coffee on the regular, a budget surplus isn't very likely.
Last week I found a dress I thought was super cute, so a super friendly salesgirl (Jordan) offered to have it transferred in my size from one of their other locations. I wandered in yesterday figuring the hold had expired since it had been a week. I was super rude and outright snotty, yet she and another salesgirl were incredibly friendly, patient, and nice and went out of their way to find the dress (which was back out on the sales floor) along with several other cute dresses for me to try when the original dress didn't fit. I walked out of there with a super cute and inexpensive cocktail dress. I felt like a million bucks when I wore it out to dinner last night.
what the hell is this store trying to be? i think it is trying to be what urban outfitter was years ago before it went national but failing miserably.
I know a lot of gals will contradict my review, but this is coming from the male fashionista perspective.
Yes, there are a lot of cool things here I love. They have a great selection of gloves during wintertime, nice bags and awesome books! I've also checked out the gals clothes collection and it's pretty good. My friend loves shopping here so I frequent this place more than I'd like.
HOWEVER, as this store markets itself as indie, fresh and unconventional, the male fashion here is so extremely conventional. It's all Penguin Brand western shirts and polos. Really, really boring conventional stuff. It's so upsetting to see such a diverse and fresh ladies section and such a boring and unremarkable male's section.
Other than that, I love the people that work here, I love the books and it's a generally good place to spend some time while waiting to be seated at a nearby restaurant.
Love, love, love, LOVE Therapy. For real.
It's technically a pretty "normal" hip place to go in that you can find quirky and up-to-date fashionable dresses/skirts/shorts/tanks/blouses/EVERY OUTFIT PIECE YOU WILL EVER NEED with relative ease and San Francisco appeal, but it's the staff here that really makes a difference. I'd say within 30 seconds of walking in you will be greeted by a staff member and asked in the most non-pushy way ever if you need help finding anything. If you are a normal human being that doesn't make any sort of snarky comment, these girls will go and pick whole outfits out for you. Piece by piece, they'll ask you if you're shopping for something special, any sort of event, what have you, and will cater to you completely.
They carry a plethora of brands like Obey, Cheap Monday, Toms, Total USA jeans, Allison, and other "off the beaten path" mainstream lines but ALSO carry local designers as well. Their jewelry selection is off the HOOK! Seriously. Hand made necklaces, rings, bracelets, and head-thingies that I never understood but am jealous of when other girls pull it off so easily, they got 'em.
"Alternative" (I hate to use that word, but it applies) books and 'zines, some small and cute home decor, as well as purses, belts, underwear, mugs, picture frames, gloves, wallets, toys, mintssunglassesshoesgreetingcards blah blah blah cute everything.
Prices are a taaaad high, but I don't necessarily blame them, it just happens to be the brands they choose to sell, which are marked up straight from the manufacturer--not the seller. Obviously it depends on the brand you're getting and the item, but one could easily spend $250 on an entire outfit which for a lowly barista like me is kinda steep. Then again, that's my choice.
They don't make returns which is the only SLIGHT grievance I have since I am a huge impulse shopper and Therapy's cute selection constantly gets me, but they will do store credit.
The turn-over rate of the clothes is medium, which I love, because you know that fabulous dress you can't afford this week will probably be there next week waiting for you. Oh, and if the store you go to doesn't have your size, a staff member will happily order it right away to be delivered to the store as soon as possible with no charge and no obligation to buy.
Ah yeeeuh.
I don't quite understand the pricing scheme at this store. $50 dresses and $40 hats? What?! Also, the "28" price tag on the cheap-looking "stainless steel" rings are in dollars, not pesos. Overpriced yet underpriced. Totally cumfusing!
Oxymoronic observations aside, I found the most amazing technological invention here: PARTY RATS! Hell yes, I bought two packages! These finger contraptions are the answer to all modern-day woes. Seriously.
Great finds. Things that you will fall in love with. Items that you will call your soulmate. I found a great brand of skinny jeans that I adore and that fit well called Blank Jeans that I was introduced through here. Normally, the people that work here give me a smile. I rarely find them stuck up toward me like other boutiques around the city. If you're looking for a gift, there's a chance you will find something for your girl/friend. If you're just looking to window shop, it's exciting to check out what they have in stock. If you're looking for an outfit on your 2nd date, you might end up with the right dress. If I am in the mood to shop, Therapy might end up being on my list.
Cute clothes, accessories, handbags and shoes here. I haven't bought anything here in ages but got a cute pair of shoes here once and handbag another time and we're talking at least 3-4 years ago & I still wear the shoes and sometimes use the handbag. They have fun gag-type/funny/silly gifts toward the front of the store.
Mostly, just love the name, is so fitting for a mainly women's clothing/accessory/shoe/bag store! I can't say that I'm all that into the clothing, a little too hipsterish for me, but always fun to browse for a few minutes.
Okay, it is rare occurrence when I find a boutique I can actually afford with good customer service and super cute clothes. Therapy met and surpassed my expectations. I was helped by one of the clerks (Ryan) almost immediately, he was nice, not pushy, helpful, and just a doll.
I ended up buying a pair of skinny gray jeans for $45, but tried on a bunch of other cute stuff that I wanted, but could not splurge on that day. I am pretty curvy and some items seem to be made for less curvy maidens because they are junior sizes, but I fit into most of the larger ones (I'm a 6 in women's and apparently 11 in juniors! Makes a girl feel big). Regardless, I loved the clothes and the whole environment - it's what I like to call non-snobbery shopping.
Therapy is one of my favorite clothing stores in San Francisco. I come here for a little mini-spree about once a month. It always has fun, trendy clothes at reasonable prices that I mix in with my higher end pieces. I like the way they organize their clothes - by color, just like my closet!
They do carry some decent brands, like Tulle, Ben Sherman, Moon Collection, and Esley, Hobo International, Sam Edelman, Toms.
The thing that sets Therapy apart that keeps me coming back over and over is the staff. Everyone there is SOOOO friendly. They are super helpful with colors, sizes, and giving an honest option. One of my favorite gals thare is Oriana. She always seems to remember me, and my 2 sisters (we all frequent this store).
I was there last night and I bougt a shirt, a wallet, a pair of skinny jeans and a dress. Everything is fun and I can't wait to wear each piece.
I LOVE THIS STORE.
I do, I really really do. It's filled with fun jewelry, beautiful clothes, amazing shoes and purses. They had a mens section but I skipped right over that. They also have wonderful little gifts at the front. Cheesy novelty gifts and beautiful notebooks, stationary and books are all displayed in an eye catching manner.
This is the kind of place I would like to open myself one day. If I had the time or money or location like this one. Great style and really fun to shop in.
This store confuses me because I don't understand their price scale- some things are really expensive and others are decently priced- but they have cute stuff and they're not a corporate conglomerate. The location is swell, too.
Cute, trendy clothes at decent prices. They might not be staples, but at cheaper prices you can get some fun pieces here. I also like to browse their gift and housewares here, but haven't purchased a gift here yet.
My mother always said that shopping is therapy, and nowhere do her words ring more true than here. This place has so much; clothes, shoes, hats, jewelry, bags, purses, to name a few. (Plus a fantastic furniture store next to it by the same name!)
If I could blow my entire paycheck at Therapy, I would. Every time I shop here, I find myself thinking 'Oh my god! I've been looking for something like this everywhere!' Their dresses are beautiful and fun, and their t-shirts have great designs and colors. I've brought home jewelry from Therapy for my mom and sisters, and they've loved everything. For my dad's birthday, I bought him a hilariously innapropirate card from these guys, and it was a hit. This is also the first store I ever went to with my now-boyfriend. We tried on hats together, and then we fell in love. Ha! Therapy, baby!
Oh, and the staff is also incredibly friendly and easy to talk with, but they never hover, thankfully. Very helpful, and charming. Love 'em!
Therapy you say? Whether it may be a Sunday stroll or after dinner shopping in the Mission on any day of the week this is definitely a place you should stop by because you can always find some really nifty stuff. I have found cool birthday gifts, housewarming, or that unique something for retail therapy. LOL
I have been coming here for years now and I always bring my out of town guest here to do some SF shopping for souvenirs or a cool hip shirt, hat, or a Nixon watch. There is always something here that catches my eye and I end up buying it.....I never have a guilt. The salespeople here are always friendly and helpful without the pressure because the products are top quality at great prices.
Janel is one of my favorite employees there. She's awesome and there is a reason why she's been working here for years for as long as I can remember. She really believes in the products that her store sells.
NEED I SAY MORE.....I LOVE THIS STORE!!!!!!!!!!!
OH YA FYI THEY ALSO HAVE A COOL HOME FURNISHING STORE NEXT DOOR AND THEY HAVE 6 STORES FROM SF DOWN THE PENINSULA ALL THE WAY TO SAN LUIS OBISPO.
This is my happy place. I went to Therapy looking for some fake mustaches (see my review of The Go Game). Not only did they totally deliver with the "mustache for every day of the week" set I also walked out with the cutest headband and visions of all the other stuff I wanted to buy.
Looking for new, fab sunglasses? They've got 'em. Super cute dresses or shoes? They're here for sure. Accessories from earrings to bracelets to hair stuff? You bet. Plus all that zany, kitschy stuff that the mustache set would fall into.
And, best of all, the staff is super, super nice. In places like this sometimes the opposite can occur and that really makes me reluctant to spend my money in shops like that, no matter how much I love their stuff. I'm glad that Therapy made my buying decisions easy. Although, I'm not sure my wallet agrees.
I enjoy perusing everything in this store--from the obnoxious cards to hip but affordable clothing to the oversized, leather purses to the shoes and even items on carousels near the counter.
What really prompted my review was that fact I found purse hangers (the metal thingies that you put on a table to hang your purse instead of using the back of a chair or behind your back (where it inevitably falls on the ground or if you hung your purse to one side of the back, the chair tips over when you get up to use the bathroom). Only $11.95--cute floral designs--AND with its own leather pocket carrier. Folds up neatly...length a biz card and a 1/3. SO handy. Used it that evening while dining at Range, seeing my purse suspended and secure made me just as happy as the food (seriously--food there was a bit rich for my tastes).
Bought a pair of sunglasses for $12 and upon my request, sales person gladly cleaned it for me before handing them over at the register.
I always make it a point to stop in this store when I'm in the area.
Wait staff is cheery and helpful.
This is an excellent store; I always, always find something I want to buy, if not five things. If you think it's overpriced, you don't understand retail at all - it's really not much more expensive than a mall store, except that instead of poorly made, boring, same-as-everyone-else-is-wearing mall clothes, someone personally picked out every item of clothing here for its unique balance of wacky cuteness and everyday wearability; that's the advantage of a small shop that knows its audience, but it's not like the boutiques that have five or six key items and a bunch of filler. I walk into the dressing room with sixteen things and I'm excited about each and every one. BUT, even if for some reason I don't like any of them, the staff is never grouchy or hipper-than-thou, always helpful and attentive. So much so that I thought at first that they were on commission, but clearly they're not since no one ever asks who helped me and everyone helps you all at once.
Conclusion: good people, great clothes, great prices. Always some great stuff on sale. Hit it.
I really like Therapy and it always makes me happy to pop in, but to be honest, I have never ever found anything for myself there. What's up with that? I guess men's clothing isn't their strong suit. I generally come to therapy to kill time in the Mission, or get cards and gifts for my mother, sisters and the MBGITW.
They have a pretty great selection of kitschy cards and books. Its a great last minute shopping spot for birthdays and holidays. Maybe someday I will need 'Canadian' Breath Freshener or a plastic Sigmund Freud action doll, but right now, I come here with others in mind. I suppose if you are just bumming around the mission its a must do stop.
OMg, oMg, OMG, omG.
Give it up for the top shop with the mostest.
The bomba** shop from the block.
THE place to go for reasonably priced, yet VERY stylish apparel, shoes, and accessories... plus a whole lot more. Big fan, here. BIG fan.
*Tano handbags (a huge selection) reside here. So many colors and styles- I've never seen such a selection anywhere else.
*They carry Sam Edelman and Pink shoes.
*There are racks upon racks of Anthropolo-gesc apparel at non-Anthropology prices.
I found some lovely tops and dresses here that I should have bought for $40-100. Their selection reminds me a bit of Aprie, but on a slightly higher end scale. For the boys, they carry some looking stuff. I couldn't really tell you more than that b/c I was too busy browsing for myself. Sorry, gents!
If that isn't enough, they've got an assortment of Archie McPhee type items in the front to keep you entertained when you're done oooohing and ahhhhhing over items in the back.
Love this place.
The people at Therapy are starting to recognize me. At least one staffer knows me by name. Hi, Ryan.
That might be because I'm in there once a week. I straight up love this place. I've never walked out empty-handed. Even on budget days (i.e. the 3-4 days directly preceding pay-day) I can pick up a cute scarf or a ring and feel ok about spending my last dollars on pretty things.
Staff is always (always!) friendly and helpful. They stock great brands for prices that (I think) are very reasonable. Love Therapy!
I really love this store. Like it's serious-moving-in-together love that I have for Therapy. Aside from having a metric shitton of knickknacks, books, comics and other assorted stuff, Therapy has REALLY super cute clothes, shoes and purses.
The sad thing is that it's a little too expensive for me, so I rarely shop there. Example: I have a tarty dress that I'm planning on wearing to Alice S's art opening next Thursday; but, because I'm going to be there in a professional capacity I needed to un-tart it a smidge... So I figured I'd buy a cute little cardigan to go over it.
OF COURSE Therapy had a cute little cardigan - short sleeves, rhinestone buttons, shows some without showing all - perfect for this dress.
Cost to Kate for this cute little cardigan (which is cotton, btw, b/c I'm allergic to wool, suckas so don't even try that "was it cashmere?" shit with me!)
$52
FIFTY TWO DOLLARS.
Ugh.
The thing is that I love this store and their clothes so much that I will shop there regardless of the fact that I'm broke. I only bitch about it afterwards.
Oh yeah and the staff is exceptionally attractive in a punk-alt-indie way and really nice.
Go ahead add insult to injury. If you guys were rude and ugly it'd be easier for me to avoid dropping bank in your store.
Meh. I'm going to go look at my $52 cardigan.
I like Therapy's ambiance and concept. I also like that the hats section is superb (although the hats are too big, or maybe my coconut is too small?).
I like the clothes as they look on the hangers. Not so much when they are on me. The thing is, and this is not really Therapy's fault (well maybe a little for stocking them), the designers they sell here use a shoulder-less and biceps-less mannequin as a model.
So yeah you'll scream in joy at the perfect red coat you just found but just make sure to have 2 friends standing by so they can help pry it off you. Clothes can be pricey here.
I mistakenly thought that my boyfriend's Christmas party was going to be a fancy affair so I dressed accordingly. I later found out that it was going to be at Jillian's sports bar...real classy. Feeling really overdressed and a little too self conscious, I decided to try and find something a little less formal and walked into Therapy to see what I could find.
I was greeted by 3 amazing sales ladies named Orriana, Marissa and Marissa (SP?) Not only did they help me find the absolute perfect dress, they even helped me accessorize when I didn't know what to do with myself.
I felt like Cinderella who mistakenly thought she was supposed to go to a ball, realized she was actually invited to a crappy sports bar, and had 3 lovely fairy Godmothers who had her back and made her look uber cute in spite of it all.
2349820954 stars!
Another place I'd heard about for ages! I was at the tail-end of a date that somehow ended up in the Mission, and as we walked toward BART we noticed this place was open - at 8:30 on a Thursday! So I dragged him in...
OMFG this place is ridiculous! The jewelry is sooo cute...they have an incredible selection of hats (Gorin Bros, etc), bags, shoes, and yes - they even have the Hobo wallet I've been re-coveting since it was in a purse that was snatched over 3 years ago! I held back from buying it (economic hardship, you know); I did, however, buy both bacon *and* cupcake flavored floss! Both gifts, I swear ;)
I suspect I'll do more window-shopping than anything else for a bit, but I can't wait to go digging around at this place when I have some $$ to burn...
Oh, and the staff were really nice and helpful - but not in an icky, Ambiance-ish stalker kind of way!
I recently went in and fell in love with a dress! I was having a fat week and needed a bigger size. They didn't have it, but a helpful staff person had my size transfered from SoCal within a week.
If you're looking for something that only one or two other people in SF will own this is your spot! To me it's worth the extra cash to not recognize your forever 21 shirt on someone else! :)
I think the term "Valencia Corridor" needs to die. It's the MISSION, ok? It doesn't need your real estate terms to make it pretty. I remember the days when any decent SF citizen would not be caught dead on 16th and Valencia. That's right people; no bars, no restaurants, just crackheads. Thank heavens for urban-renewal, because now I have a new reason to come here during daylight hours!
Therapy is a clothing and novelty boutique...somewhat along the lines of Anthropolgie and Ambiance. Like so many businesses these days they are running some awesome sales: $60 cocktail dresses, affordable outerwear, shoes, boots, Vegan Leather handbags (among others) all marked down 20%. There are brands you might recognize like Free People and Hobo combined with others you may not. It works though.
The pieces cater to both urban and natural tastes...funky and fashion-forward. There is a little something for everyone here (including the guys!). The awesome sales people will be more than happy to help you select the perfect gift, big or small. Definitely a therapeutic change from some of my regular SF shopping stops.
Um. Love it here. I usually want everything, but I try and contain myself and just buy one or two items. But the clothes are so cute that you can build an outfit around a shirt or jacket from here.
They also have fun jewelry and hats and tights and shoes. The store is a little full so it's hard to make sure you see everything, but the sales staff are friendly and always start a room for you right away, so at least your arms stay free for browsing.
I have picked up many pairs of fake Ray Ban wayfarers here, in every color... Good for cheap, fun sunglasses and random gifts.
i have great admiration for therapy.. however, this particular location was my first and LAST VISIT.
the experience i had here has made it on my most horrible retail experiences list.. i found a bunch of cute pieces that i was going to purchase..but the employees here were so obnoxious and unhelpful (no greet at all), that i decided not to buy anything from this location.
i will never, ever come here again.. and i will stick to the therapy in Mountain View. At least the Mountain View staff are very helpful and respectful to their customers. if you can, avoid going to the Valencia location.
I love this store. I don't make it here as much as I would like, but whenever I do, I always end up spending way more time than I expected. All of their stuff is super unique and I always get tons of compliments on the dresses, shirts and accessories that I have bought here. I really can't say enough about the selection, it's a very interesting mix of girly/retro/funky/super cute.
I was never a dress-type of girl until I moved to 19th and Valencia and had to walk from the BART station to my apartment....and I accidently found Therapy!
I adore their dresses - summer and cocktail - I usually buy 80% of my summer clothes here and 100% of my holiday dresses. They are unique and super cute!.
As far as jeans, shoes, bags and regular tees...I can find better deals at other stores....
Therapy rocks.
ONE STOP SHOPPING.
Hands down!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the staff. They're UBER-helpful and the selection there is O-mazing! You'd be hard pressed to NOT find anything you like. Seriously --- the store is just chock full of AWESOME gift ideas and the clothes. Sigh. The accessories. Flutter. The bags. Swoon. Don't get me started on the shoes...

Just wanted to add that they started their annual 40% off everything in the store (actually both stores - furniture and clothing) on Jan 2.
This sale is not usually advertised so be sure and remember for next year!
Based on my review below you probably guessed that I didn't find much at this sale. Prices were more reasonable given the (perceived) quality of the items so it's a pretty good deal. I did get a cute Paul Frank iron on monkey tshirt for my 3 year old niece.
Unfortunately, if you want to get the good stuff you need to get there right away. By Jan 3 the furniture was almost gone.

40% off the entire store right now!
Lots of great stuff...dresses, jackets, purses galore! Even fun trinkets and cards.
I love love love this store. The books are great, the kitschy jewelry is well kitschy and adorable. And the dresses! oh the dresses. Being someone who wears mostly dresses, I love finding cute unique ones, and I have the best luck here. Too bad I can never seem to afford the ones I really want...
one star less for the cashier who is always really slow while your table is now ready next door at Ramblas.
Although I LOVE my new orange dress, courtesy of Therapy, this store is seriously overpriced. Still, it's great for one-stop shopping and has excellent customer service.
I love stopping into this store. I recently moved and Therapy is on my way home at times. I cannot for the life of me pass it by without going in. I tried several times, saying to myself "you are on a budget" or "you don't need any more stuff," but alas no mental conversation can convince me. I always end up stopping in.
I have not actually bought too much from this store, but the fact that it can draw me on on at least a weekly basis says something. I guess I'll knock a star however because they always seem to have run out of size small. Well I have big feet so at least they stock my shoe size! Phew.
