Let's get some things straight.  The Hobby Center is just a building.  It houses two theatres: Sarofim Hall (larger) and Zilkha Hall (smaller).  Theatre Under the Stars is our resident musical performing arts group.  Broadway Across America is a completely separate group which usually brings us musicals from Broadway, but offers the occasional play as well.  TUTS and Broadway both use The Hobby Center as a venue.  You cannot buy TUTS tickets from the Broadway Across America ticketing agents, nor can you buy Broadway tickets from TUTS.  Does that help anyone?

TUTS makes an earnest attempt to give Houston quality musical theatre.  To a large extent, it succeeds.  Maybe I am too young, but my main criticism is that their production choices tend to lean toward dated, overly safe (read boring) shows.  Brigadoon, Singin' in the Rain, Anything Goes, Hello Dolly???  Ugh.  There are far too many options to feed Houstonians such bland and snooze-worthy shows.  Why didn't they choose to produce Caroline or Change or Light in the Piazza?  That baffles me!

The production values of everything they do are great.  Costumes, sets, casts, etc. all get my praises, but those things alone don't necessarilty keep me entertained for 2 hours.  It still needs to be a good show!  They really need to step up to the plate and usher in a new fan base.  Stop pandering to what they think the 80-year old crowd wants to see.  I know plenty of older and retired people and they don't want to see  Hello Dolly again.  I understand presenting the classics, but no one can save Brigadoon from itself.  Poor Roy Hamlin . . . he did as much as anyone could be expected to do with that show.  It really was pretty to look at.

I've picked them apart and this really doesn't sound like a positive review, but TUTS really is a great musical theatre group.  I point out the one major flaw in hopes that it will change.  You can be assured that if you are attending a show you like, you will be impressed with their production of it.

TUTS offers a wonderful range of performances for everyone to enjoy.  The theatre is a little steep, which isn't unusual, but I've been able to enjoy the show from every section of the room where I've sat.  Customer service has been great each time I've bought tickets and have attended performances at TUTS.
