I had been told by several people about the high quality of CSDF's theatre group, and I am now delighted to report that I couldn't agree more.
I went to one of the high school plays tonight at CSDF with one hearing friend who knows virtually no ASL, many fellow beginning ASL students, and one Deaf friend. There was something for everyone. You really didn't need to know any ASL to follow the play, which was very well done. For those still learning ASL, it was a great opportunity to see it in action. The CSDF students were creative and obviously enjoyed what they were doing. The smiles were as big off the stage as during the play. The performers socialized with the audience afterwards and were patient enough with my slow comprehension and signing for me to finally be able to express my appreciation for the play. They had apparently noticed me laughing throughout. It was impressive the way they incorporated the subtitles to allow the learners in the audience to follow along with the story. Nobody was left out. Without making fun of anyone, there were even a couple of gentle jokes about the difficulty of following some of the signing. Impressive production, and I will be back every chance I get.
