This place is so yummy i love the bread and everything else in between in the bread. I had the pastrami sandwich and it was (in the words of rachel ray, Yummo) hehehe I just wished that they put a little more meat . Love the fried potato slices too even though it was very greasy it was great!
The young man that took my order is very nice and the old lady was very cute.
Can't wait to go back. hummm maybe tomorrow.
How can you not like a place named The Yellow Submarine? The subs are large and tasty. Personally, I like their corned beef sandwich. You can get a large sub for 50% or more of the original price, which is usually $6.
Parking is tough on the street with meters, but the service is quick. There is an area to sit down and eat if needed.
I shared a pepper steak sandwich with everything on it with my boyfriend a few weeks back. It was tasty. The bread wasn't my favorite in comparison to that at Submarine Center, but the pepper steak was bountiful and the sandwich veggies were fresh.
I don't know that it was the best sub sandwich I've ever eaten, but it was decent.
The guy at the counter (who seemed to also be the owner) was very kind, jovial, and quick.
When we got our sandwich and my creme soda, the place only had one guy sitting in the dining area, and another who was ahead of us, waiting for his to go sandwich. Just wasn't a busy time or day, I guess.
I'll have to go back and try something else they make, just to make sure that I'm on the right track with this sandwich shop.
These sandwiches are very yummy! They're not cheap (about 8$ for a large pastrami), but they're big. If you don't eat a ton Yellow Submarine is great if you want to share a half with a friend (which is more than enough for one person), but a little expensive if you're alone. Then again if you dig leftovers this could be great.
My personal favorite is the pastrami, but the steak with cheese and peppers isn't half bad either. Also try their potato fries!
It's cash only, and I never seem to have cash, which is the only reason why I gave it four stars instead of five.
I love this place. These are the best sandwiches ever and we come here probably twice a week. Yum Yum.
Sometimes the place gets a little busy, and things slow down quite a bit when it does. Also, they occasionally run out of the french fries, which is a big disappointment when it happens because they have the best french fries on earth!
I gave this place another chance and ordered the avocado sandwich with homemade hot sauce (recommended by a friend). It was really really good for a vegetarian sandwich. Next time, I'm going to get the cheese steak with homemade hot sauce. It's all about the sauce, so true.
But I still think the bread is just too big.

Big sandwiches yes, but too much bread, not enough meat!
My peppersteak didn't even have cheese in it… Read more »
In my active pursuit to re-embrace my amazing city and try out new places in my 'hood, I decided that today was the perfect day to hit up The Yellow Submarine, seeing as though I've heard nothing but fantastic things from several loyal patrons AND it just so happened that on this particular day, I was craving a freshly made sammich.
Mmmm... my sammie did not disappoint. I opted for a Medium Turkey and Provolone and as for the fixins, I got the works -- sans the hot sauce -- and it was delightfully delicious.
I'm definitely coming back, though next time, I'm getting the hot sauce.
A-OK hot sandwich joint, but a bigger fan of their tater chips! =D
Decent sandwiches. We ordered medium steak, pastrami, chicken -- all pretty hearty, w/ fresh veggies. A medium goes a long way. Liked their soft toasted french bread. When I tasted the chicken, it had a hint of cinnamon which suprised my taste buds. Pastrami was ok, as was the steak... Potato salad was ok - little sweet and had some pimentos, which I'm not use too. I haven't had Boston style sandwiches before so iono -- it's a good honest sandwich. (Better than some chain joints like subway, togo's, quizno's)
Service was cool. The cook took our order and another dude rang our bill. 3 sammies w/ a drink, chips, and potato salad lil' under 30. Not bad comparable to other sandwich joints in the city. Cash only, but they have a ATM machine outside. Friendly walk-up counter service. Yellow-Sub is small, place and pick up your order counter, tables and chairs to eat inside.
I'd come back for the tatter chips... but uhm... on the fence about their sammies... it was just ok for us.
They say Boston Style.... not quite but it was still tasty.
The bread was toasted just right.
The cheese steak isn't cooked with the cheese. They place it on the bread where it didn't really melt.
It was fresh and they were extremely friendly.
Next time I go I won't be getting the cheese steak.
I go here from time to time because it's a short walk from work. I used to pass by this place often but never ate here until maybe college. Since then, it's been one of my closeby lunch options when I wake up late and there's no food at home.
I've come to realize that the only sandwich I really like here is the pastrami. The last couple of times here I tried the pepper steak and the roast beef. They were both okay. I think there's a little too much bread and not enough meat compared to other sandwich places. But really, you can't go wrong with pastrami. I just think with a little more meat the sandwiches would be better (more meat does not always mean better). Even though the bread can be too thick, they're nicely toasted most of the time. I haven't tried the other options, so maybe there's something else on the menu I would like as well.
I seem to always get the 'fries'. Really. Almost always. I go in there thinking,"Okay, I'm just going to get a sandwich. No fries"
...
"Hi, what would you like?"
"I'll have a regular pastrami, everything but onions."
"Okay...would you like fries with that?
"Yes, and an Orangina/Orange n' Cream, please."
Argh no willpower whatsoever. Not even a pause.
They're not actually fries, but more like fried thick potato slices. But the people there call it fries. I like them, but one order to me is too much for just myself. There are well over 15 large slices in an order. By the time I'm halfway through, it's kind of a chore to finish. I think sharing it with another would be perfect though.
If I'm craving for a sandwich during a lunch break, this is the place for me. And I will be there with my pastrami sandwich, drink, and an order of fries.
Sandwiches are ok. The bread was toasted just right but I felt the meat:bread ratio was a bit low....too little meat too much bread. I ordered the italian combo large and shared it with the bf and we both agree that it is nothing spectacular to make our taste buds jump. I would come here if I were in the area but probably not to just buy a submarine sandwich.
Been on an eating out kick lately though my restaurant choices have definitely been reflecting the economic squeeze. I'm making most dining decisions based on whether I can get in/get fed/get out for under 15$.
So sorry Gary Danko.
Too bad Michael Mina.
It's been swell Slanted Door.
See you around French Laundry.
My new budget is all about the cheap eats. And The Yellow Submarine on 6th definitely fits the bill. They've got good, cheap sandwiches that are so big, I can spread a medium out over two meals.
Guys at the counter were amazingly kind and helpful.
The hot sauce is delicious, but I wasn't expecting it to come by default. Warning for those with weak tolerance for the spicy stuff, make a note when you're ordering.
Oh em gee. This place is god send. Giant sandwiches for an excellent price! They only come in Medium or Large, no Small. A Large is $8. My friend and I are complete fat asses and we were both able to get full off of splitting a large pastrami sandwich and a basket of fresh cut fries. If you like potatoes as much as I do, you will love these fries. It's a giant hot steaming potato chip, always made fresh. Everytime I come here even at odd hours, there is at least a small line. $15 for a large sandwich, potatoes, and 2 sodas for 2 people. Parking is not too bad. You might not find something on the same block but there are spaces scattered here and there.
Yellow sub is my favorite oven toasted subs in the bay area -with Sub Center in West Portal a close second. What sets them apart is that they cook the meat only after you order, (which makes it just a bit fresher), then they toast the meat with the bread in the oven. They also make great 'fries", although they aren't really french fries. They are thick slices of potatoes deep fried, which makes them a little crunchy and a little soft on the inside, just the way I like them. If you like ultra crispy fries, these aren't for you, unless you remember to ask them to make them extra crunchy.
I've tried the turkey, veggie and all the other permutations, but nothing taste like the steak and cheese so I would advise you stick with that.
One final tip - the old lady can be surly. My advice is just step up to the counter (near the oven/stove, not near the cash register) and wait. Don't order right away. I repeat, don't order right away. In a moment, when she is ready, she will ask you what you want. If you order before she is ready, she doesn't like it. If her boys ask for your order, then go ahead as usual.
Final note: Sandwiches are huge. I recommend two people sharing one large sandwich and one order of fries. Grab extra napkins. Enjoy.
This place is great. As far from Subway as you can get and these guys were toasting sandwiches long before Quizno's was in the game.
The large is HUGE and I generally am quite satisfied with a half-size along with a side of those fantastic fries/chips. One of the few places that I know of whose fries are sliced potato "chips" sent through the fryer. It's refreshing to have these instead of the same old fry.
The guys here are always super nice and they are very attentive to your sandwich topping requests...unlike the dorks working at Subway who are only thinking about what time there shift ends. Seriously how many times do you have to watch-dog those "Sandwich Artists" with your toppings. ADD in effect.
If you like a good sub, go here. If you don't well then suck it.
The place looks pretty big from the outside but I guess most of the space went to the kitchen.
The sandwich was alright, I had the pastrami and I cant really say much about it. It had all the qualities of a normal toasted sandwich. I didnt get that feeling of wanting to devour it fast...it was just like munch munch munch.
When I actually think about it overall, this place is a 2.5 but i'll give them the extra half..maybe next time it will taste better.
So I finally tried this place after a friend declared it her favorite place in SF! Not being a big fan of sandwiches it wouldn't have been my first choice of cuisine. But it would be fair to say I'm now a fan of Yellow Subs.
I had the steak and cheese which was very good. The bread is toasted but still remains soft in the center. The meat and onions are grilled to order. It was very tasty. I especially liked how the used jus the right amount of oil and vinegar.
Unfortunately, at the time I went the were changing the oil and could make the fries. I would definitely go back to try the chicken and fries.
Best sandwiches in the city!!! The bread is crunchy, but warm and soft at the same time!!! :) There are two different hot sauce choices... I would suggest a mixture of them both... it really does the sandwich wonders! The service is amazing because the guy taking orders is always cheerful and inviting.
The one complaint I have is that they run out of avocados too often.
When I was little, I thought the Blue Meanies lived here. So I never wanted to go inside. I finally overcame this irrational fear go a few years ago, and if I were more dexterous, I would've kicked my own ass for missing out all this time. These subs are deeeeeelicious. I get the avocado with Swiss and have never ONCE had a brown or crunchy avocado bit. Never. That's a real testament to their quality control. And I command you to try the homemade fries. Because then you will make me your queen.
The mural rendition of their offerings is fabulously outdated, advertising sodas for 25 cents and the like. It's a family run spot, so please don't expect the mom to give you a scalp massage and a pep talk. She's business-like. Because, as it turns out, this is her business. And the son seems to make it his business to recognize regulars, which I think is very cool of him.
Finally, let's get something straight. THEY DID NOT FORGET YOUR CHEESE. It's toasted onto the bread, so you can't see it. But trust me, you have not been cheese grifted. It's in there.
For the most part I've heard about this place countless times from friends who live in the inner sunset and I have always felt intrigued by what this place had to offer. Once i arrived I found the place on the corner and was kind of surprised how small it was overall. Ordering was easy since the line was never too long and very straight forward as they made everything fresh.
Now I've experienced places like Gene's on Taraval and the Sub Center at West Portal and can say that this place compares with the other places. I ordered a Pastrami sandwich and it was solid. The bread was crisp and the ingredients were very fresh. The only thing that I could say that I wish was improved on was the taste of the pastrami. After trying so many places in my life I felt that the meat could have been a little more tasty to say the least. But if your on a budget it's nice to know that they offer different sizes to fit your wallet so that's never a bad thing. Solid place to come to if your looking for a good lunch.
I just had to review this place again. I love Yellow Submarine. In two days, I tried the Italian Combo, Chicken, and Tuna (it was supposed to be Turkey but they got the order wrong).
The chicken was the best!! With the homemade hot sauce it tasted AWESOME. I absolutely love everything that they put in it. Absolutely love the onions and the pickles. I gotta say though.. they should probably leave the cheese out of the tuna sandwich. My mom's tuna is the best, so I won't have that one again. Half a medium fills me up until I can't eat anymore.
I usually don't like to eat sandwiches.. but I absolutely love Yellow Submarine.

The place so good I drive from Berkeley to eat here. I've been a fan for a long time and it's Elle's favoritte sandwich place. I get the rueben and she gets the cheese. They are a fair price when you consider how big they are.
This is the place for people who love East Coast sandwiches
This use to be so good but now it's very lackluster due to the competition it's got now. Picked up a Philly steak and cheese and it was good but it wasn't knock out great. Meat seemed a bit skimped. I gotta say $8 for the large can feed 2, but with it's competition packing in more meat, it's now only a 3 star.

small neighborhood sub shop. Great philly steaks. I'd suggest getting a large and eating half.… Read more »
The bread is really good and toasted just right. The remaining parts of the sandwiches are rather lackluster, as are the side dishes. It's OK, if you're in the neighborhood and want to eat a lot for not much.
The pepper steak turns out, more often than not, to be onion steak slathered so heavily with grilled onions that the beef, peppers, and cheese are lost in the heavy taste of greasy onions.
Some of the other meats, turkey, ham, etc, seem to be standard deli fare.
Best consistent subs around on the west coast! I had the turkey with everything for about a year of going there. then I switched to a pepper steak! WOW...the cash only policy can get tedious at times. I like calling in my order and 15 minutes later.boom! freindly stroll and pick it up...mmmmmmmmmmm Oh busy busy bizzy during lunch. You'll stand at door and wait for food or step out side, it's worth it...Also call and if the mommma is working the phone, I like the way she answers the phone.
These guys would get five stars if they: 1. could tell me why the subs are called "boston style" (I'm from Boston and have no idea. To be honest, they did tell me why, and it was because the original owner was from Boston) and 2: didn't try to offer me "everything" on my meatball sub. Big mistake.
Those issues notwithstanding, the food here is awesome. The first thing I noticed was the bread. Most sub places (at least in Boston!) give you mediocre bread that you would never eat by itself. Not the case here. The bread makes the sub, and Yellow Submarine's bread is crusty and toasty and just delicious. The meatball sub was good overall (it would have been a lot better if I had eaten it before it got to room temperature, but that was my fault).
I got an order of fries, which is a great deal for less than two dollars. I really liked them, but I have strange taste in fries. They're like thick cut potato chips. They come out pretty soggy, but I like them that way.
Thanks Yellow Submarine!
Only one choice of bread (and its not whole grain either)
Veggies= lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and pickles (NO SPROUTS!!!!!!!)
hot sauce is extremely mild and I could barely taste it
Yes the sub is toasted, and the cheese is melted...but my turkey with everything except onions was rather tasteless.
I am one who likes options outside of red meat (seriously, yellow submarine has too long a list of red meat choices, not enough non-red meat choices) and I like flavor!
Don't get me wrong- it's better then subway, but its not worth a special trip
Never again will I cheat on Ike's when in SF
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I saw this place on Check Please! Bay Area and I've always kind of wanted to try it...so I did! With my friend. It's so unsuspecting too. A little tiny corner to order, and some places to sit, but MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF FOOD. No really, for the price you pay, and the amount you get is so much. I mean, I normally finish all of my food, and today I was starving after having walked around the Cal-Acad (not to mention the waiting in line) for over 2 hours - and I still couldn't finish the sandwich.
And will someone please tell me where you can find a potato that size? Mutant potatoes up in here...shit...
In my 30 some years of sandwich (hoagie) eating I do not think I have ever ordered a whole (large) sandwich. We decided, in our state of unemployment, to share a Yellow Submarine and asked them to cut it in 4 so we could nosh while relaxing in GG Park. Man, what a sandwich! We had turkey and swiss with all the toppings, perfect meld of condiments and amazing tomatoes!
The cashier is really friendly and good at the upsell, there is also an older lady that has apparently been working the magic in the kitchen for decades!
Make sure to get the house made hot sauce...mmmm!
Stay hungry. Stay foolish. Try every sandwich you can.
At the very least, you must try the fries. They are like a softer, fleshier version of potato chips. Very fresh, very mushy and very good with ketchup. I recommend sharing an order with a friend or two, because they give you a LOT of these encapsulated heart attacks.
I had the medium cheese combo with avocado, which is enough food to either keep you very fat or feed you for two days. I chose the latter, because apparently I don't need the extra help when it comes to conserving flesh.
My jaw still aches from chewing the bread. Seriously. That is one thick, chewy roll. I had to take a few jaw massage breaks just to make it through half the sandwich. In fact, I googled "self-massage jaw techniques" BECAUSE of this sandwich.
The sammich was good, but it didn't quite hit the spot. I did appreciate the generous portions of avocado (so I didn't feel shafted for paying extra), the hole-in-the-wall air and the Rico Suave cashier who affirmed all of my sandwich choices with a "Very good!" However, my search for the perfect sub continues.
Stimulating the economy, one sandwich at a time.
You won't be disappointed by any of the sandwiches here! (I would def recommend the pastrami)
Get the "fries" which are medium to thick sliced potatoes... mmmmm.
There's not a ton of room to sit inside, but the park is just down the street, so you can always get it to go. You can also call ahead of time to order your sandwich... which might be a good idea around lunch time.
You walk in and order your sandwich straight away, then you can take a seat or just lean and wait (if there's not a line). They're totally cool there.
There's plenty to do right around there on Irving, so take a stroll around too, it's a fun neighborhood.
Well, I'll keep it short and sweet.
This place is great. Albeit, it is a little pricey for a sandwich, it is well worth every penny you spend. The ingredients are top notch, and service is friendly and great (always a plus!).
Everything from their basic roast beef sandwich to their steak & pepper sandwich is freaking awesome.
Also, you can always stop by after shopping on Irving for a nice meal!
I know The Yellow Submarine has probably been around for a long time, but I just recently saw it on Check, Please! and decided to try it out. I really do love a good sandwich. Even though I try to make them at home, it's just never the same.
So Eugy and I came here and got some sandwiches to take with us to sneak into the Sundance Kabuki. I opted for the meatball sub with extra cheese and onions. Eugy had the hot pastrami with everything on it and the extra spicy sauce.
My meatball sub was mediocre at best. The sauce had NO FLAVOR at all and was in desperate need of salt. The meatballs were ok, but nothing to get excited over. Eugy said his pastrami was ok, but again, nothing to get really excited over.
Pop's Sandwich shop still has the best meatball grinder in my opinion. And Sub Center has the best subs. Especially the turkey. Yum!
Solid sandwiches with great whole-sliced potatoes plus you gotta love The Beatles theme :)
You know how there are some places that just do it right.
Well this is one of those places. They make sandwiches, just like thousands of of other places in the city, but these are just a little different.
Toasted Subs, just perfect. The bread is great, they are piled high with meet, cheese and lots of fixings.
Maybe it is the oven, maybe it is graffiti on the wall, maybe it is just that they do it right.
I LOVE THE PASTRAMI!! =) I have only ordered a different sandwich from Yellow Sub once, and it was the meatball which was decent. The pastrami is soooooo damn good tho. They throw the pastrami on the griddle with onions so the onions are nice and soft and flavorful. If you get a large sandwich be prepared for a feast!! The large is actually the size of two fairly large sandwiches. I like that they put hot sauce on there for an added kick too. They also have slammin fries, just thinly sliced potato rounds fried til soft... while a little on the greasy side, they hit the spot. My number two favorite behind Sub Center.
We came here one sunny afternoon for a sandwich. we had heard of this place from Check Please Bay Area. I don't remember what I ordered but I know for sure it is something different than what my husband ordered - just because we always like to try different things. But when the 2 sandwiches came out - they tasted the same!! Leads me to believe that their sandwiches are pretty much the same.
The sandwich bun is nicely toasted (which is a plus) but the meat can use a little more salt. Overall, it's not bad, but not superb either. The good thing is that the Medium size sandwich is huge!! They give you your moneys worth. We also ordered a side of fries, which is basically slices of potatoes (flat) and fried. I wasn't a fan of this ... the middle of the potatoes are so oily and limp. I know that fries in general are oily, but to see it and to taste it is another thing!!
Yellow Submarine's sandwiches are like crack--they are that AMAZING! I haven't tried anything else except the steak and cheese because seriously, that sandwich is literally made to perfection. *drools* I usually order a medium because that is enough for my stomach. The large is HUGE! I always split the large amount of fries, which are greasy slices of potatoes, with someone. Definitely one of my favorite spots to go to!
The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because they need to expand the dining area! There are only a handful of tables and the room is literally the size of my living room. The last time I was there, I felt like I had to whisper to my boyfriend. I didn't want other people to "ear-hustle" on my conversations!
for years i've been a subway lover. it always smells so good and inviting in a subway and you certainly know exactly what you're getting into. The addition of both the $2.99 6inch daily specials and the $5 footlong only sweetened my love affair with the 'way....that is, until I was introduced to the yellow submarine.
a couple friends and i had quite the saturday last weekend....it was gorgeous out and we decided to make a stop for a sammy and froyo(review coming later) on our way to ocean beach. My roommate had heard about the yellow sub so we decided to try it. As we rolled up the first thing i noticed was the LOOOOONG LINE! Holy moly. Good thing it went fast and i was ordering subs in about 7 minutes. I got the small (seriously the thing was huge, i only could eat half) with turkey, lettuce, swiss, mayo(i'm not very creative with the subs, i'll admit it) and also ordered a large steak and cheese with everything plus hot sauce, hold the pickles for my friend. I think the total came to 16$ or so? pretty reasonable if you ask me, especially if i had known i'd get two meals out of the small sandwich!
after getting our numbers we headed down to the wishbone to get some throwback candy and thank you cards.
about fifteen minutes later we got two piping hot sammys and were ready to chow. HOLY MOLY are they good! the bread is fantastic, perfectly toasted and just a little salty/oily on the top. they load them sandwiches up with meats and condiments and, as mentioned heartily, you certainly get a bang for your buck here!
it's a nice walk or a short N-judah ride from my apartment to
So I've only been here once, but it's enough to not go back. After ordering, I watched the elderly woman construct my sandwich. Here's the part that earns them 1 star.
The woman is about the apply something from a squirt bottle to the sandwich but there's that crusty part on the tip that blocks the squirt. So the lady wipes the crusty cap, like the dried up ketchup on the tip, on my bread. ON MY BREAD!!! So I get a sandwich with what looks like a dried up belly button that just fell off a newborn smeared on my sandwich. If they do this in front of customers, what do they do when we're not looking?
