Conventional gyms are so 2006. Bring on the next era of ass kicking workouts... bring me your Muay Thai.
The Yard is fantastic, in every sense of the word. There is no pretense. No one cares who you are, cause frankly, next to Joe you're kind of a nobody anyway. There is a sense of family you feel the second you walk in the door, albeit the kind of family that kicks your butt the second you let your guard down.
I know all you ladies out there are thinking, ew, men sweating like pigs beating the daylights out of each other. But it ain't like that. Unlike the numerous gyms you have irritatingly humored for the sake of a tight back end, at no point do you feel a thousand eyes on your back end here. I don't know. Maybe they pump something in through the vents, but everyone is just so darn cool.
I promise you... you will leave feeling like a Million Dollar Baby.
I've only been training here for about a month and feel like I've finally found a home!
It's got the grit & gristle needed for more experienced Muay Thai fighters and also a great anybody-is-welcome attitude for newer fighters (or anyone simply looking to get in shape). And the only place I know of where you can feel like Ivan Drago and do pull ups from the iron rafters...
The cool thing about The Yard is the trainers take you as you are and let you grow as you would like to. They've been turning out some successful fighters, so if you plan to get in the ring this is your place. But if you're like me who is in it for fitness and self-defense then this is a great spot to train under and with experienced fighters.
There are no set classes so you can come in when you want and get some personal attention when they see you heading down the wrong path...In a short month, Joe, Mark & Lee have all ready helped break me of some terrible habits I had that previous trainers either missed or ignored...
Some other gyms I've trained at are actually quite reckless in their sparring attitudes & you won't find that here. Students who want to spar are evenly matched and are supervised under the watchful trainers...There are no egos here & the trainers are about as cool, knowledgeable and helpful as I've experienced. Same with the students.
The facility is fantastic - boxing ring, plenty of heavy bags and a full sized cage for MMA/Ju-Jitsu training. There is also a small free-weight area for strength training...
My favorite aspect of The Yard is it's strong sense of community - almost a neighborhood vibe. Feels like the kind of place you can crack open a 12 pack after a hard day of training...I've seen some fighters just come in to hang out and play Xbox on the big screen TV...very cool vibe here.
Oh - and the last important part. No lame contracts! You just pay as you go & the price is amazingly fair...(almost a steal!)
So come on down!
This gym is run by three sincere martial artists that bring the absolute best out of their clients/members. I highly recommend developing your skill level and burning off some steam at a genuine venue for learning and fitness! The Yard Rocks!
After years of being harrassed and constantly asked when I was going to train by my friends who train MMA, I finally decided to start looking for a good Muay Thai school in my area. After doing some research and checking out a few schools, I came across a news article in the Downtown LA newspaper talking about The Yard. So I stopped by one night to check it out and decided on the spot to join.
The Yard is located inside the LA Boxing club in Downtown LA. If you're looking for a high end health club where they teach Muay Thai classes by a Billy Blank wannabe to a mass of people at once, then The Yard isn't for you.
Owners Mark and Joe will make sure to whip you into shape and teach you the fundamentals of Muay Thai on a individual one on one level. There is a ring where you can spar other students if you like. Both guys are friendly and patient. Joe is a up and coming MMA fighter who is good at what he does. If you're serious about learning and traning Muay Thai or want to do some intense cardio, I highly recommend checking out The Yard.
I'll start training again once work starts ot being so crazy.
