Decent dance party upstairs on Saturday and Friday nights after 12.  Why are dance parties so damn hard to find in this town.  I know it takes a lot for douchey white guys to get off the wall and shake it a little.  Maybe its the Delirium on tap...

I wouldn't eat here.  Sitting outside essentially makes it impossible to be served.  Come to think of it, getting a beer is pretty tough no matter where you are in the place.  I would show up at about 11:30, get a couple drinks, go upstairs and stake out a good spot on the dance floor.  The tunes are solid and the hipsters always know how to get down.

Wonderland Ballroom is classified as "pretentious hipsterville" as much and incorrectly as many major-label artists are referred to as "indie" but I just don't' see it. Or, at least as much as everyone says it is. (for the record, I'm not a hipster myself.. although I deem myself quite hip).

Maybe it's that it feels a little like the bars back in Seattle to me, but it's a super relaxed and laid back place (downstairs) when I go. The jukebox is one of the best I've come across in the city and heck, they serve $3 PBR. There's also a patio outside, which is great on a summer night.

I've been to the trivia night upstairs once before, that was good fun. It's a great middle of the week place.

Take it for what it is, a laid-back environment (I'm yet to dance) w/ good beer, bartenders and good music.

I came here for a magazine party a while back, with a few friends from North of Canada.  I also brought a few other friends, as I had a vague suspicion that the venue and the night were going to be...uninspired.

I was right.  The Wonderland Ballroom is decent, in that is not the Clarendon Ballroom.  It is doing that correctly, at least.  The space is very "in your face" about how hip it is.  Is something retro?  They've got it, somewhere, perhaps hidden next to the extremely ironic shit on the walls.

I don't eat food at bars, and I can't imagine why you would want to do so.  Not to mention, unless this place made the most fabulous gazpacho or something, I wouldn't give a shit and my review would be entirely unaffected.

I am hoping they don't make the world's best gazpacho, I really am.

The crowd is listlessly hip - they are a bit older than the crowd at the black cat, and the fact that the girls are not teenagers means the creepy older hipster band dudes don't come here either - which means the older, hot band girls don't usually come here.  You are left with an older crowd of mediocre looking people.  Luckily, this is a bar, and last time I checked(last weekend) bars usually carry a variety of alcoholic beverages.  This is something the Wonderland does right - their selection is eclectic enough to be "cool", but sparse enough so that you don't get the idea that they are trying to be cool, because trying to be cool isn't cool.

We cool?  We cool.  Tell me everything is cool, honey bunny.

See that, I referenced a movie, which is cool.  Then I told you which is not cool.  How fleeting this temperate society is, right?

The prices are reasonable, nobody dances well because everyone is a suburban white kid, and there is outdoor seating to chill it, if one is inclined to do so(ironically, given the summer heat, but irony is cool).  I'm not saying I want to see Chris Brown or Usher on the dance floor, but stop doing ironic stupid dances.  STOP WITH THE FUCKING IRONY.

Basically the Wonderland does everything as if it isn't trying to do anything, and that means my score reflects exactly this sentiment.  A-ok, in that I would go, were I asked to go, but it is not the first name on my lips when someone asks me to go to a cool bar/small venue.  I understand that the neighborhood is "hip" because everyone there is "really living their lives, man" unburdened by "society and materialism", but I'm not going out to experience a working tract on intellectual socialism, I am going out to get hammered and then fuck some girl's brains out.  Which is ironic.  Like rain, on your wedding day.

...and repeat my previous statement about references.

As I've said, I like my bars pretentious, but I set my bias aside to attend a friend's birthday thingy at Wonderland Ballroom. I was forewarned that the place was very unpretentious, so I got what I'd paid for (which was nothing). It was a Friday night, pre-midnight, the music sucked and no one of the drizzling of people upstairs was dancing. The patio was packed, though, and reeked of cigarette smoke. I smiled kindly at my friend, blew her a happy birthday kiss and said good night.

I thought the horror had ended when I stepped outside. When I started walking down Kenyon, a woman walking opposite me stopped to let me know a group of ne'erdowells were hiding out in an alley up the street; she'd escaped when the cops conveniently drove by.

Shake head and sigh.

I really like Wonderland.  I've been there a few Fridays and Saturdays to drink and dance and had a great time.  The crowd both on and off the floor was really nice.  You can engage with strangers in the crowd or just do your own thing and feel welcome regardless, and that's the first time I've experienced that kind of openness in a club in DC.  The music was a funny mix when I was there, but the dancing was just great!  The Delirium was tasty  I've never eaten there and probably wouldn't, but other than that I've had laid back, super good times here on nights when I didn't dance.  They get fun shows too, so you should really keep an eye on them.

So I'm a really big fan of dives apparently, and Wonderland is no different. The booze and food here are cheap, and the crowd was chill and not pretentious like most places in DC. My friend and I had a lot of fun playing w/ the juke box even though they should add some more 80s music. I was here on a Wednesday night, so I'm not sure if it's as much fun on the weekends. I did leave super happy and super drunk, and I can't wait to come back.

Maybe this place *used* to be a dive bar, but now it's just coasting on the credit lines of trustafarians. I will admit, however, that it's particularly charming to listen to the oh-so-earnest (D) hill staffers proclaiming how much they/their candidate/their pets are going to change the world.  Yeah... right after you finish your game of drunken hackeysack, right Whitey McWankerson?

Food?  Awful.

"Waiters"?  Please point one out to me.

Beer?  Stale-ass selection.

But at least you can smoke in their overcrowded patio... and for that, they'll get two stars.

I was extremely excited about visiting this establishment. After moving to DC (Dupont Circle region) about a year ago, I became stuck in a rut of only going to bars within a mile of my home. I was really excited to venture out of yuppiedom and into something a little more interesting, maybe even a little hipsterish. I'm cool with tight black jeans and converse. My hair is dyed black. I can be a little snobby-snob about the music too. But damn...apparently everyone in this bar is waaaayyyyyyy cooler than everyone else on the planet. Seriously, even for a hipster bar they have a bad case of the smug. I didn't think the food was that bad...it's bar food, how bad can it really get? The veggie quesadilla was serviceable, I would eat it again. The beer selection wasn't bad, and the only reason I'm giving this place two stars instead of one is that the bartender was really nice.  Other than that, this is a great place to visit if you have a raging desire to feel inferior.

hands down my favorite bar in dc.  jukebox downstairs, sweaty dance parties upstairs, cute boys everywhere - oh, and deliri-yummm. how can you argue with that?

a couple of gripes:  saturdays are ridiculously busy & it can be near impossible to get a drink, go to the bathroom, or converse in a normal fashion.  the rotating dj nights are great for the variety, but some of the dj's can be snooty pricks.

aside from that, it's a rad place to drink good beer & dance your ass off.  where else can you laugh at white kids spazzing out on the dancefloor to anything from a tribe called quest to daft punk?  make it a point to stop by around halloween.  i went 2 years ago and saw the funniest, wittiest, most creative costumes of my life.

My old watering hole while in D.C. I have a limited idea of what the place is like now as I drop in every six months or so, but three or four years ago this was my home away from home. Diverse group or regulars and of course you always run the risk or pleasure of having a bunch of NOVA kids get all dressed up for you only to realize that no, they aren't in N. VA anymore, and no this isn't Clarendon Ballroom. The place is dark, looks like someone decorated it with stuff from their dad's garage, and is on the dirty side of the spectrum, ie it's a bar and not a fou fou martini bar. This place is the rare D.C. venue that has soul and is affordable.

Who knew WB made kick a** salads?

I've been to WB on several occassions: the wee hours of the night for dancing, a weekend evening for a few drinks, and happy hour/dinner on a beautiful weekday evening.  My favorite experience was the third.

I have to give it 5 stars because the salad I ordered was, shockingly, AWESOME.  I got the 50% Cobb Salad (-50% because of no eggs = a winner in my book.)  Two Stella's later, I found why it took so long to make the salad; fresh bacon, freshly cut lettuce (not even bagged!), fresh veggies, hot chicken and a mound of bleu cheese on top.  All tossed in a yummy vinaigrette.

I was more than pleasantly surprised to find no "bar food" here.  Of course they have the obligatory nachos, wings, chili, etc., but for $8.75, this salad was awesome.  I would definitely go back and get it again.

I'm going to base my review on my experience that evening, but the few times I have been there for dancing, I would give it a 3.  If you're not from the area, it's not worth it to trek all the way to CH for a crowded bar full of drunk people trying to hook up.  But, maybe it was just an off night.  I would stick to Dupont/Georgetown/AM if the event calls for some drunk, crowded, loud dancing.

I would definitely recommend happy hour rather than a Friday/Saturday night outing.

I enjoy going here during the day rather than at night.   Wonderland is my soccer team's designated bar. The downstairs and the patio are great.  At night the place fills up like crazy.  It's fun until around midnight, then it gets crowded and annoying.  If Wonderland were closer to other bars, I'd probably go a bunch more.  The beer selection is great.  They also have bottomless bacon (that's all the bacon you can eat, not bacon eating without pants on), which I've yet to experience but plan to sometime.  It's fun to dance here until it gets insane crowded, at which point you find yourself asking... why the hype?

The first time I went to Wonderland Ballroom, I was picturing somewhere along the lines of Clarendon Ballroom (for obvious reasons) but Wonderland is absolutely nothing of the sort (in a good way!) I only wish I could frequent this place, as I can easily say it has led to some of my very favorite nights out in DC. Unfortunately it's kind of in a random location, so dragging my friends out of their usual haunts and trekking out to Wonderland can certainly be a challenge since most of us don't live close by, and it's not exactly "metro accessible."

With that said, this is my kind of bar- great beer on tap **Delerium in the House**, downstairs bar/jukebox vibe with funky decor, upstairs is usually packed with either a DJ or a fun live band. Great mix of patrons- from yuppies to hipsters, and although every time I've been it's always packed, you can always find a quiet corner to have an intense chat with a friend in.

Edit: After living in Columbia Heights for 4 months now its official, I'm a local. And where do the locals hang out? At Wonderland. But only during happy hours. Once the outside deck is closed it gets too crowded inside. The food is really quite perfect bar food. The Bottomless mimosas on Sunday's can't be beat. If you are new to the area this is definitely the first place to check out. The amount of people you meet is pretty amazing!

After an early dinner on Friday we head over to wonderland for a few drinks. It was nice sitting outside, smoking and having a dude come around and get us drinks. We met some really interesting people and everyone is definitely friendly.
The drink prices are reasonable and they make a pretty perfect rum and coke. I can see how it can get crowded and annoying as the night goes on though. It's definitely packed of the hipster type but it was nice meeting some people who are in the neighborhood. I had a good time but I will probably stay away at prime time hours. I do really want to go to the $1 hot dog happy hours though. yum!

I'm judgmental too but at least I'm subtle about it, you catty, tweed-coated, bespectacled jerks. At least the fratboys and the screechy girls everywhere else don't actually turn and stare at you when you walk in, and then proceed to turn to their friends, whisper hurriedly and then actually point at the aesthetically offensive item you see when you walk by. No, those idiots will either ignore you and go about their drunken business or slurringly welcome you into their arms while yelling at the tops of their voices waving a Miller Lite.

I guess I should explain what I was wearing when I visited Wonderland: legwarmers. Yeah, that's right--legwarmers. I know that some of you don't agree with my fashion choice and are going to respond "Well, what response do you expect if you wear legwarmers?" To which I will say--screw you, at least my legs are warm. I like my legwarmers. And just because I'm wearing legwarmers doesn't mean you can point at them as I walk by. Dude, I'm wearing acrylic knit on my shins, not on my head. I can still see you.

Which is a pity because the bar's actually pretty nice. Downstairs is chill, and the music is listenable but often not too loud, so you can sit at a table and talk to friends without going deaf. Upstairs, there's a DJ spinning the things that make me and obviously judgmental bitches (who say things like "'Waterworld' was one of the best movies every made' and think it's funny and ironic) dance, such as LCD Soundsystem and George Clinton. The bartenders aren't too hostile. There's a lot of beer (I don't drink beer, but my friends were really excited about it).

I guess this is one of those bars that you have to "break into" and become a regular in order not to feel like you're in a paranoid fantasy.  This requires the time and the inclination to do so and, seriously, is it even worth it?

Five stars during the week and 3 stars on the weekends.

They do not serve long island ice teas by policy.  I like that.

Wonderland (used) to be real neighborhoody and really fun all week long.  Sometime in summer 07 the Georgetown looking crew discovered it and now its pretty much a sweaty meat market on the weekends.  I guess good if you want to pick up chicks.

There seems to be a lot of staff turn over as of late - but the staff I do know are really nice.  Its nice to see babys and dogs at the bar.  I think with the yuppification of columbia heights things may change for the worse but who knows.  I await nicer weather to see what happens.

I used to troll this spot last year pretty regularly when that female DJ had her night "Evil Disco" and did Guitar Hero tournaments--some of the best D.C. nights of my life and I've had some doozies. I'm a big game dork so anything involving video games and beer is awesome in my book.

The GH nights were onetime because the tournament started early and Wonderland had Delerium Tremens for $5 a bottle. *Cartwheel* I caught my wallflower roommate French-kissing some 40-year-old dude one night, another night some beanie-wearing AU student shed tears over my political views.

I have fond memories thanks to GH, but the patrons were a little too trustafarian for me. Perhaps I need to go more frequently but I'd rather hang out somewhere I know it's worth it. After a decade of pretty much living in clubs there has to be something amazing going down to get me to a bar or club--GH counts.

Anyone who knows me well would laugh at the thought of me going to Wonderland Ballroom. I'm more of a Rumors/MadHatter/Roxanne/Bourbon kinda guy; and rather than wear tight black jeans w/ converse one-stars and a zipper hoodie, I prefer pastel colored pants and polos with cute little emblems on the left chest. Known primarily as a hipster's paradise,  Wonderland Ballroom is probably the last place I'd ever think of going for a good time.

Every now and then, people step outside of their comfort zone, rock the boat, and change things up a bit. This is what I did on Saturday night for my buddies 26th bday festivities when I took my preppy ass to the WB. And I have to say, I had a pretty good time! The place is definitely a dive, but a dive with a great beer selection, a pretty good DJ setup on the top floor, and I've heard they often have live music - a good dance floor regardless of the kind of music. The patrons are mainly young 20-somethings, and while the place lives up to its "hipster" reputation, it's certainly not solely that crowd - there's a good mix of people that is unique and makes for an even better time. My only complaint about the place is its location - there aren't really many other bars nearby, so it's not a "bar-hopping" place and it gets super packed. I had a great time dancing up a storm, but once it got so packed that I couldn't really move, I decided to bounce elsewhere.

All in all, a good place to go to earlier in the night, have a few delicious Delirium Tremens, do a little dance, and then disappear to somewhere less crowded. That's my suggestion.

One of my favorite bars in DC.  Relaxed atmosphere.  Great jukebox downstairs and staff play good music from their ipods upstairs until the night's events commence.

Good beer selection.

Though there are usually plenty of people there from outside the neighborhood (me, for instance), there do seem to be some neighborhood patrons.

Oh, and people actually talk to each other there.  Like you walk in strangers and leave friends kind of talking to each other.

They also have fun events, like the annual sun dress party, where everyone gets discounts if they're wearing a sun dress, especially the men.

Weeknights definitely best.

I can't shake the feeling that I used to like Wonderland a lot (some good freestyling and other rare and tasty bits), but i've just been disappointed recently.  (Oh, and this review is only for the weekend dancing aspect.  The bar seems pretty cool, but i'm usually moving through that quickly to get to the floor.)

And the floor is hot, crowded, and really really loud.  The music keeps skipping as someone bounces into the DJ.  You can often barely move, and there's beer all over the ground and your friend's back.  Sometimes the music is awesome, but a lot of times it's not.

I feel like i need to go back and just chill at the bar, and maybe i'll improve my rating.  But there's better dancing elsewhere.

Going to Wonderland is like going to an apartment party complete with a narrow wooden staircase, attic-like upstairs and all your favorite anti-establishment friends in the District.

The difference is that it's an insane house party and they serve Delerium Tremens.

Now I can't speak for the food or the table service.  But you better be in the mood to show off ya flow upstairs or elbow through crowds at the bar downstairs.

That said, it's totally 'different' from the typical DC scene.  Basically you've got to rock this house.

1. The Wonderland is a hop away from my house.  No need for any additional skips or jumps.
2. They let me and my roommate bring Scrabble to play.  Once, they even left the bright lights on upstairs a little longer for us and one of the bartenders kept checking in on the game.  I won both games, just for the record.
3. They have good hotdogs and hamburgers.  I hear from my roommates that the barbeque chicken sandwich is also very good.  I like the beer selection too, and their happy hour deals are pretty good.
4. Even my dad liked this place.

Disclaimer: I've never been late on a Friday or Saturday night, so I don't know what it's like when it gets crowded.

2 hearted ale NOW On tap, the house vodka is REYKA

Two hearted Ale in  .5 liter mugs
Sunday live Music is downstairs with no dancing room.
Gone is Sierra Harvest Ale

Happy hour review
Website beer list out of date

HOFBRAU Maibock in .5 liter mug, GONE
Excellent bunch of beer on tap, had a foot long, bland chili dog on a toasted roll  about as thick as my thumb (wit) cheese wiz.
Eat it before the chili sogs the bun, without burning your mouth.

Fun to freak out kathleen with a trekkie mind meld.

I was ecstatic to have a neighborhood bar - until, that is, I discovered that  it turns into much less of a neighborhood bar and much more of a hipster hangout on the weekends, so much so that even the most faithful neighbors seem to stay away.

That said, Wonderland gets three stars for a couple of reasons:  1) I can hop there and back on any night of the week just a few blocks home (thank goodness for the getting-mugged-fear-allaying power of a couple of beers); 2) a couple fantastic vegetarian options on the menu that make sitting with a beer and some food (in the off hours that the bar actually feels like a neighborhood dive) definitely worth trying; and 3) the fantastic beer menu.

DEFINITELY a weeknight place... only reason to go on weekends is to feel old. Otherwise, good spot for the neighborhood.

Quirky and diverse live music upstairs, moderately bad frat-house on hipster acid jukebox downstairs... and always fun to be had whenever a colorful neighborhood character stumbles in. Lots of awkward interactions between the customers.

What a dive but I have met so many great people here.  I would highly recommend it to anyone just looking to hang out and meet new people.  A very diverse crowd hangs here so who knows, you may see a cross dresser or two:-)!

I've only been to Wonderland once which is strange because a ton of my friends live in Columbia Heights and they go here all the time.  They seem to love it, and the one time I went here it was really fun.

Well one Saturday night at 2am after having a bbq/going away party for my boyfriend (who also lived in Columbia Heights) we all ventured the 2 blocks to Wonderland dodging huge roaches along the way. It was a Saturday night and the upstairs bar was still packed. I think Chris Burns was Djing.

Wonderland reminds  me of a college house party. It had all the components; it was hot, everyone was sweaty and dancing with abandon.  I got hit in the head twice by the wild antics of crazy dancers, but couldn't get mad because they were my friends.  There was even an impromptu dance off a la "You Just got Served".

The drinks were cheap, and there was this guy with a camera taking pictures documenting the night.  It was a really fun time and I will be back, even though I look like a sweaty teenager with bad skin in all the pictures (too much flash, you need a soft focus to take pics of sweaty drunken people!)

Wonderland has good beers on tap (Hoegaarden), decent bartenders and a diverse crowd. I will be back--I hope the crazy lady who stood on a chair behind me, rubbing my hair doesn't come back though. Diversity comes at a price.

Aside from the tight quarters and stifling heat, The Wonderland Ballroom was quite enjoyable.  After visiting their Myspace page and witnessing claims to having the best footlongs 'IN THE FRIGGIN' UNIVERSE', I tried one and was a bit doubtful when the dog came out looking greyish.  I convinced myself it was the light playing tricks on me and took a bite.  It was delish...I'm not a HUGE hot dog fan, but I was hungry and it was better than a greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray.  This is a good thing.
Their beer selection was great (at least for my taste), and the prices are reasonable.  Trivia was mostly SCI-FI jibberish, but I had fun nonetheless.  :)

My favorite bar in DC. Lots of DC's most endangered resource - interesting people. Great jukebox as well - any place that has Soul Coughing gets bumped up a notch in my view.

This would be a nice place to hang out if I lived in DC.  It has a nice feel to it and it seems like the good times are plenty here.  They just had their three year anniversary and it looks like they're still going strong.  Maybe for an anniversary gift they could get some good AC.  They had some window units, but with the whole place full it was a sweat factory.

The downstairs bar was nice.  The booths were actually back seats of older cars so that added a neat touch.  The bartenders are really laid back and they're friendly so you can have a decent discussion with them about anything.  It's a little small so you could probably fit about 50 or so max.

Upstairs had the same, small feel to it.  There were more tables for sit down eating and they had a stage at the front of the place.  They had a ton of beers to choose from on tap and the Happy Hour specials were nice (two dollars off draughts, three dollar rail drinks).  They also serve a mean foot-long hot dog.  The food doesn't blow you away (you can get movie-style nachos here), but it's good when you're drinking and you're not really paying strict attention.

Their trivia was a bit off.  Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but it just seemed out there.  Oh, now I remember, all you have to do is sign up if you want to host trivia.  It seems like anyone can call the trivia shots.  Maybe that's why we were bombarded by two rounds of science fiction craziness.

The bathrooms were pretty clean and they had loads of toilet paper.  There must've been three months worth just chilling above the toilets.  They had three rolls on the wall and a whole lot of stock.

Not a bad place to come and have a drink or two and kick back (in the winter).
