Whenever I think of the Willard, I think of Liz Lemon from 30 Rock:  "I want to go to there . . ."

It's luxurious and special and warm and historic and charming and lovely, and yes, a bit full of itself, but it kind of deserves it, unlike some places with more attitude than is warranted.

If you have ever been invited to someone's wedding at the Willard, you have to fight between the urge to be jealous and the natural inclination to be happy to be included in someone's ridiculously expensive, ev read more » ent.

When people are paying a lot, they expect a lot, and the Williard almost always delivers.  I would say service suffers in the winter months when they are more heavily taxed by wet, soggy tourists.

It is expensive, delicious, and usually worth it.  There have been a spate of complaints about cranky service lately at a bunch of DC restaurants.  I hope that's just a lunar phase or something and not DC's NewYorkaFication.

I was deeply privileged to stay at the Willard for a week during my first visit to D.C. in 1995. This is one of my favorite heritage-luxury hotels and I especially like the Round Robin Bar. If Yelp had six stars, I would award all six to the Willard.

If you are coming into DC for a visit. The Round Robin bar is a great place to relax after dinner.

I'm not going to rehash the excellent selling points that make this hotel legendary; the other reviewers have done a fine job with that already.

For the past 3 years, my parents and I have taken trips to DC for my Birthday. Every year, I arrive to a birthday card from the guest services manager in my room. Every year, I have a marvelous time in this classy, sublime vacation spot far removed from my apartment in Philly.

Let's just say the Willard is really just about YOU. It is a completely malleable living thing that will cater to your specific needs and make you feel like you're the only guest in the entire hotel. For all the glitz and glamour, it is an unpretentious hotel. At any rate, the glitz and glamour are completely appropriate to a hotel with such a history and such stature.  And you can't beat the location, right there in the heart of our Nation's capital, all within walking distance of the great sites.

The Round Robin bar is THE power bar in Washington. You can just imagine the conversations that have taken place throughout the years by big DC politicos. Once, I met a nice, married man who worked for the GOP at the bar and we got friendly and we...oh, that's none of your business!

I love DC, and I love the Willard. Nothing makes a weekend getaway as peaceful, restful and still exciting as a stay at the Willard.

Oh. My. What an experience.

This was the culmination of my valentine's day makeup weekend with the gf.  To recap, we were unable to do vday together so decided to have our own vday weekend this past weekend.

I booked a suite at The Willard and requested a room with a view of both the Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial.  The view was as advertised... spectacular.

I went down early in the day, 3pm, to check in and set the room up.  I brought the four cupcakes that I had purchased and wrapped from Hello Cupcake with me, a small present for the girl, and two "fancy" bottles of water, one still and one sparkling (she can't drink right now, so instead of champagne I got us "nice" water, heh).  After I set the room up, putting the presents on the table, removing various private dining menus and DC guides and putting them in the desk draws, I went down to the Concierge for a little assistance.

Since we were dining at Corduroy that night at 8:30pm, I wanted The Willard to go into my room at around 10pm to put the bottles of water in a silver wine bucket with ice, and also bring us up two champagne glasses.  I would have put them on ice when I checked in at 3pm, but then the labels would be all soggy and gross and the ice would have surely melted by then.  I also needed to make brunch reservations at The Willard Room (which was spectacular by the way, albeit insanely expensive... I spent more on brunch than I did at Corduroy).  The Concierge took care of everything... it all went off without a hitch.

When we arrived after dinner, I told the lady friend that we were going to the Round Robin bar for a drink and then afterwards we were headed to our third and final destination.  When we pulled up, the valet asked if we were checking in, to which the gf responded, "No, we're just here for some drinks."  I waited for her to walk over to the heat lamps under the awning and then told the valet, "She doesn't know it yet, but we are staying here tonight.  Do me a favor please, wait til I walk inside, and will you grab her top that's on a hangar in the trunk, her bag, and her present and bring them to room 706?  Thanks man."

We grabbed a drink at the Round Robin bar and then afterwards told her we were going to our last place... and then headed to the elevators.  She was shocked that we were staying there, haha.  Once the surprise wore off in about 2min, and as we were walking down the hallway to our room, she asked, "but wait, what about my stuff in your car?"  I told her it was already taken care of, and much to my satisfaction, it was.

We walked into the room, and the presents were on the table, the bottles of water were on ice, in a silver wine bucket, with two champagne glasses, and a bottle opener.  Her top was hanging up in the closet on a wooden hangar, and her overnight bag was on the floor next to mine.  The shades to the window were pulled back, with the Washington Monument starring at us in the background.  It was, in a word, perfect.

Also, the beds are the best I've ever slept on in a hotel.

The next morning we walk down for breakfast and there is a small orchestra playing in the lobby, complete with a cello, harp, violinist, etc... it was the perfect beginning to our Sunday morning brunch.

If you're looking for top notch service that goes the extra mile, a setting that is classic Washington, DC, and at the same time romantic if you want it to be, then look no further than The Willard.  I'm honestly looking for an excuse to go back.

This review is for the Willard's tea service in Peacock Alley.  In short, the service was deplorable.  The hostess was nowhere to be had on arrival, leaving us to peacock it back and forth with our wet umbrellas until we snagged a harried and disoriented waitress (not with our umbrellas).  After finally finding the hostess, we were unenthusiastically escorted to, I'll grant you, a very lovely table setting.  20 minutes later, no waiter.  5 more minutes, we say, and then we are going to leave.  So of course, the waitress shows up right on the 5 minute mark.  We stay to avoid breaking our word.  The tea itself was good, the scones excellent, finger sandwiches only fine.  The saving grace of this experience was the richly appointed wedding taking place just down the hall.  Watching the procession of wedding guests was a sight to be seen, the only redeeming factor as a matter of fact.  Oh, we waited 30 minutes for our check.

I was a guest here at the Willard for 9 nights. Part business and part pleasure. The Willard was a great hotel for both. This was my first trip to DC, and I must say that the Willard helped to endear the city to me.

Old charm meets modern conveniences.

Top-notch service from the front desk, including folks remembering my name (the young man, Philip, who worked at night) and giving me chilled bottled water when the gift shop was closed (a taller gentlemen with a nice smile).

The room was nice and spacious, and the bed was a dream to sleep in.

Every morning, there was a stack of free Washington Post newspapers by the elevator. A nice touch.

When it was time for me to leave, I was able to use the business center to print out my airline boarding pass (gratis--thank you!).

I loved the Willard History Gallery near the back entrance of the hotel. So much history at that hotel.

I will be back.

The Willard is yet another example of how I roll:

Cross-country flight means I'm dressin' how I feel. And that just happens to be gangsta like Wu-Tang thangs. I feelin' my blue velour jumpsuit and my crispy white AF1's. That's how it's done when comfort in clothing and anonymously ominous is gettin' me my own row on a six hour flight.

Well, I forgot I was staying at the political hub hotel in DC. I pulled up in my Lincoln Towncar cab and stepped out onto a gold carpet that rolled all the way to the door. Just picture it, my crispy AF1's the first to come out of the Towncar onto the gold carpet curbside like a premiere on the ghetto side of Hollywood Blvd...priceless.

Then, after I strutted to the door, I was ushered in like a hero of an unknown battle. It was assumed I was a celebrity to walk amongst a bunch of suits dressed so casual. K-Fed, eat your heart out. J-Bird up in here like shrimps and steak on gold etched china.

But really, this place is it. The history of this hotel is like none other. The FBI USED to train their trailing techniques in The Willard Courtyard (just make sure you keep a watchful eye). The Battle Hymn of the Republic was written here. Secret service is everywhere. It's tight. If they knew I knew kung fu, they might've stepped more lively.

If you want to understand what The Willard is all about, just ask the concierge anything. They know it all. Seriously. You can only imagine the type of requests the politicians threw their way. When he heard I was from The Bay, they hooked it up. I hooked him up by directing him toward Sushi Ran (he's from Japan). He was pumped.

This is probably the second coolest hotel I've ever stayed at. And I've stayed at a ridiculous number of hotels. I used to travel for work. As a travelling businessman, you come to realize that all hotels are the same. To deviate from the usual monotony is to be truly amazing.

Chicky, chicky check it out! Seriously. If you go to DC, you've gotta stay here. The view is incredible too...

I came to the Willard for a friends wedding. Everything about this place I can say was impressive. From the valet service to the food service, everything was great.

When we first pulled up, the valet didn't attend to us immediately because there were other cars too, and this was a wedding event so it's to be expected.

Walked straight through the lobby and into the last ballroom on the right where the wedding ceremony was taking place. Room looked magnificently ornate.

Afterward we had a cocktail reception up in another room on the 2nd floor. Hors d'oeuvres were tasty, and the bar tenders were very accomodating.

Following the cocktail reception was the main reception back in the same place as the wedding ceremony. On the menu was tenderloin which probably could have used a bit more tenderizing....and some of the BEST salmon I've had in a long time. Everyone at my table agreed that the salmon was absolutely delicious.

I had to go back to my car twice to get stuff, and the valets were accomodating. Very frlendly service. This place looks really expensive, and I'd say being within walking distance to the White House and the Washington Monument, I really think this is as good as it gets.

I stayed here on 18 July for my birthday with my girlfriend.  What an amazing weekend!  We got one of the jr. suites overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue and the Washington Monument.  What service!  One of the people at the front desk had been working with me to make the trip great...however, when I was there it was his day off.  He called our room and asked how everything was.  When I said it was great, but asked if he was working, he said no.  He called on his day off to see how things were going.

That's service, people!

The beds are truly some of the most comfortable in the world as are the pillows.  The room was amazing and the service was terrific.  You can't go wrong staying here.

I've stayed here four times and each visit has been memorable.  The venerable hotel is where Ulysses S. Grant coined the term "lobbyist."  The Willard is a perfect mix of history and modern luxury.  The Round Robin bar, to the right of the lobby, is surprisingly small, but a must see.  The rooms are an oasis of comfort and not all corporate cookie cutter same.  If the weather is nice, I recommend the outdoor seating at Cafe du Parc.

Another poster mentioned (but did not recommend)  the JW Marriott which is down the block from The Willard.  Do NOT make the mistake of staying at the JW Marriott, especially if you have the option of staying at The Willard.  These two hotels are not in the same league at all.

Really, a splendid old hotel.  It was my bad luck that when we were there DC was having a blustery cold snap.  So the whole place was kind of chilly, including the Cafe du Park, where we ate 2 of our meals.   Back to that in a second.  The room was spacious, the bed was comfy, but due to the height of the ceilings and the temperature outside, it was hard to keep the heat adjusted properly.  It was either roasting or freezing.  Keeping the room cool at night was the idea, but ok, the ONLY extra blankets they offered were wool?  We tried 3 times to get a non-wool (anything--cotton, synthetic...), without success.  They offer feather and synthetic pillows for the allergic, but no options on the extra blankets.  I can't be the only person out there allergic to wool, can I?

Ok, back to the little Cafe du Parc.  Terrific.  French bistro at its finest.  Stellar service, terrific food.  The Salade du Parc was just right--plenty for a meal, as they add an avocado and egg.  The assortment of sausages/cured meats was bountiful and inexpensive--easily enough for 3-4 people.  Duck sausage slices are a standout.  They've also just started serving a soup from  Brittany with a odd name I can't remember, but it's a beautiful presentation of beef, pork, veggies, with the broth on the side, to pour over at the table.  Simple and perfect for a cold winter lunch.

Hubby swears by this place when he travels, which is often.  I think my experience would have been better had it been warmer, but then c'mon, it always gets cold in DC at some point, so one hopes they'd figure out how to compensate for that.  Then again, maybe I'm just wimpy...

This is about the Willard hotel's afternoon tea in Peacock Alley. I was looking for a nice place to have afternoon tea with my sister visting from California. I was curious about the holiday tea "experience" because I heard there was a harpist and there were Christmas decorations etc.  The ambience was warm and cozy and lovely but the service and the food was so unimpressive! This afternoon tea was not worth the price.

The tea itself is delicious. You get your own little teapot but if you finish it (which I did rather quickly) you only get hot water refills. The cookies and scones - nothing special.  All generic store-bought looking sweets like a shortbread cookie, a mini chocolate cup filled with chocolate mousse and about 3 other unremarkable biscuits. The tea sandwiches were stale!  I read about that in other reviews before booking a reservation and thought maybe it was a a one time experience but nope, all of my sandwiches tasted like they were left uncovered overnight in a refrigerator: salmon, egg salad, a piece of cold steak on a  cracker, cucumber, and ham.  Nothing worth $38 per person!!

As for the service, i think they bring out the tiered serving trays and hide for the next hour so you don't complain about the funky finger food. Not much fun. I should have stuck my fork in someone's eye for that. Also, if you don't cancel your reservations before 48 hours, they'll charge your card - they do require a card to book a teatime slot.  And yes, I did ask for seconds of the stale sandwiches. I needed a second round to be sure I was going to yelp about it. it's only fair...

There is little point repeating much of what has already been covered in reviews here. I am, without question, a Hay-Adams regular when in town..but on this recent occasion clients put me up in Willard.

What a pleasant and exquisite surprise. The service, appointments, old-world smell and feel of this hotel are top notch. Round Robin bar is a must-do.

I love my view from HA, but many thanks are in order for adding yet another option to enjoy.

This historical landmark is one of the most exquisite hotels I have ever stayed in, and I feel so lucky and fortunate to have experienced it.  They're definitely more pricey than other options, but they make up for it w/ impeccable architecture, customer service, and prime location as well.

You walk into the lobby and you're immediately taken by the awesome architecture, high end furnishings, and magnificent fresh floral displays in the lobby.  The customer service was top notch as the people who work at the Consierge Desk are extremely knowledgeable and attentive (and it's a given to tip them well for their info).  So as you can see, things can add up with your stay.

They had a lavish Sunday Brunch there w/ unlimited seafood, wine, and dessert offerings, all for a bargin price of around $60!  So if you're one of those who wants to get the most for your money, I'd skip this because you'll force yourself to sit there for a half day until your waistline bursts.

Our room was simple yet sophisticated, clean, and top notch.  It was redone but the floors were still a bit crooked and it's just a great thing knowing that you're staying in such a historical place where the likes of Abe Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Woodrow Wilson, Martin Luther King, and William Jefferson Clinton have frequented.  They even shot a scene from the Minority Report there (Tom Cruise & Max Von Sydow).

Some historical hotels (ex. NYC's Roosevelt) rooms are very small w/ not much room for excess, but not the Willard.  We just stayed in a normal 2 person room and it was very comfy.  The location is great - it's centralized and there are some nice places to hang out just around the corner.  We had a perfect stay there and highly recommend you experience the Willard if you're ever in DC!

Fabulous!

This is a hotel I could live in!

I was lucky enough to get to stay here when my mom visited a few months ago. The service and presentation was impeccable!

We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite. It included a living room, dining room, two full baths and a bedroom.

Beware of the street noise. Our suite was on the fourth floor on the corner of the building. It made for great street views, but it also kept us close to the honks and shouts that so often accompany city life. I'm used to it and my mother sleeps like a rock, but I know it could bother some.

I'll be back at the beginning of next month - I'm very excited!

This is a beautiful gem of a hotel. But even if you aren't staying here, you should experience their afternoon tea.

This historic Beau Arts hotel has a grand facade and marble columned entry which make guests feel at once both special and humbled. After all, this very hotel was where Martin Luther King penned his most famous speech and where countless others supped, drank and relaxed in luxury.

Being a bit early (and curious to see more of the interior) we started with a drink at the Round Robin bar.  This, too, was replete with historic details. A couple of windows were open--the light streaming into the dark, handsome room lent to the atmosphere. We took in  the views of the park and action-packed city in style.

After a drink we took our tea. The Willard offers a transporting experience: A selection of tea was beautifully presented in a cherry-wood box while a traditionally dressed Japanese woman played a stringed instrument (perhaps a Biwa).

Although the tea is served in essentially the hall leading from the entry to the dining room, it did not detract from the experience. It was neither crowded nor busy; the marble columns and woodwork were decorated with elegant  cherry blossoms. However, while perfect for small tables, it is not suitable for larger groups.

The tea tier was quite similar to other grand hotels; we were very satisfied with the fresh, delicious and ample selection. The desserts were extraordinary: delicately textured, yet rich and  flavourful. The service was unobtrusive yet ready to assist.

Overall, I would highly recommend The Willard Hotel's afternoon tea to anyone with a love of history and appreciation of the ritual.

This hotel is gorgeous inside and out. Stop in for a drink at their Round Robin bar or a bite at the 1401 Cafe and enjoy the view. Since the Willard close to the White House and if you go to the upper floors you can see the monuments.

All of the employees are super service oriented. Here is the odd thing though, they offer free wifi in public areas but $10 a night for the same thing in your room.

December is a great time to stay here or just pop in. The hotel is all decked out for Christmas with Nutcracker themed decorations and the tree is the largest I have seen other than the National Tree.

TIP- If you do stop in, do it at 5:30 or quarter of seven at night. FREE cider and cookies..plus a caroling group.

Historic. Exceptionally appointed and maintained. Compact, but comfy rooms well-equipped with equally well-concealed power strip built into the writing desk features -- data port. Excellent room service options. Impeccable staff.

Family friend wedding hosted in the downstairs rooms off of the center area of lobby. Stunning...especially since hotel weddings can be hit or miss. Busy location makes it better as a place to have dinner at rather than make it a home base for the exploring traveler...unless all of your business takes place in any of the big, well-guarded buildings that surround it, that is!

Another tiresomely perfect review, just like all the others, ooh-ing and aah-ing about how this place makes you feel like visiting royalty (because they do, after all, cater to visiting royalty), blah blah blah.
Problem is, IT'S ALL TRUE.  It's expensive, but it's worth spending extra on, especially if you're travelling with the SO.  You are welcomed like a returning family member - in fact, the staff has actually recognized me (I've stayed there a total of four times), which is sort of shocking when it happens.  I complained one time about the minibar fridge not working (why did I care? So I had someplace to store the INCREDIBLE FRUIT PLATTER they set out for my arrival).  Did they fix the minibar? Nope.  Did they give me another fridge? Nuh uh.  They moved me to a suite.  A big ol', overlooking-Pennsylvania-Avenue suite, complete with its own library.  Gratis, of course (meaning I paid for the small room).
Like the great old European hotels it resembles, it can be quirky.  The valet service is serious when they say "give us half an hour to get your car" (where are they parking them, National Airport?).  The rooms are, uh, idiosyncratic (never stayed in two with the same floorplan, plumbing has a little too much personality).  But these are little things.
Fitness center: awesome.  Roomy, plenty of free weights, plus an interesting view (not like the JW Marriott across the street).
Amenities: The Intercontinental chain has standardized on some really top-notch toiletries.  Problem is, unlike others (e.g., the InterCon in Tampa), the Willard uses the small sizes, so you can't steal quite as much.  Boo.
And then... there's the Round Robin bar.  Well worth staying up late for, this little place makes you feel like you're really in the halls of power (even if the guy on the next stool is an obnoxious ag lobbyist from Indiana).  Small plates make dinner at the uber-fancy Willard Room unnecessary, and besides, the bar's after-dinner drinks list is just too extensive to leave.
Don't stay at the JW Marriott - stay here.  No matter how much you spend, dollar for dollar it's a great deal.

Stayed w/ my mom here this week while she was at a conference.  The beds and sheets are wonderful; the room was spacious w/ nice furniture...not enough outlets but that's probably b/c it's an old hotel.  great location; staff was friendly; very nice locker room (steamroom, individual showers, sauna) and workout room.  The lobby is nice and I really really want to return to have brunch in their dining room; as other mentioned the woodwork is fantastic, old...the feeling of a real city hotel.  all-in-all a great stay.  I will miss it and would recomend it.

Also great bathrobes and nice plasma flatscreen TV.

I'm not your typical Willard guest, I'll admit that.  I'm 22 years old and do not fit the resumé of others who have stayed here, such as Calvin Coolidge, Abraham Lincoln, or Ulysee's S Grant.  But either way, I'll give you my two good cents about the Willard.

I stayed there about 2 months ago in July, and had a hell of a good time.  I arrived there at around 3 am in the morning after having experienced some of the nightlife in the West End neighborhood.  I had just arrived to DC and was meeting up with a lady friend, so after we left the West End we thought it might be fun to go stay somewhere downtown.  We made reservations over the phone, and arrived at about 3:30 am.

The lobby of the hotel is incredible.  You can't really stay anywhere like the Willard, except for maybe the Hay Adams.  The style is unique, a lot like that of the old world.  I find that most hotels today are very modern, or too modern.  Either that, or they have a distinct corporate style to them that does not reflect any character.  The Willard does not fit this description.  The lobby has a towering ceiling with state seals on it, and it is ornately decorated with marble terrestrially.  I stayed in the WIllard room which is very accomodating.
The next day I woke up at around 9 am and had breakfast at the Euro café.  It was pretty descent.  Very ornate.  I then had a massage and facial, which was excellent.  I definitely recommend the spa, if you can afford it.
At 1 pm, I visited the round robin bar which was a fabulous time.  My companion with me at the hotel was out all day at the Oriole's game, so it was a boy's day in at the Willard as I invited some of my friends over for drinks and conversation at around 2 pm.
We lounged in the bar for a couple of hours.  The bartenders are OK.  A little awkward and a little intrusive, but I'm sure anybody would wonder what the hell I was doing at this hotel racking up incredible bills.  My friends and I met some great people at the bar, some of whom I still keep in touch with.  The bar itself is phenomenal, with historical pictures of famous guests framed all over.  I recommend the Mint-Julip.
After the bar, we went to the suite where we ordered room-service and drank till our hearts were sweltering.  The champagne was good, the beer was good, and the food was good.  Room service staff was impeccable, speedy and orderly.  We went and looked at some monuments for about an hour after this, and then came back to the hotel.  We had a couple of bad experiences.  For example, one of the bartenders agreed to not serve us even after we had tipped for a 179.00 dollar bill earlier in the day an additional 179.00 dollars, or in other words, we had tipped 100%.  The bartender made fun of my friends and I for wearing the hotel robes to the bar.  He said he would not serve us, so we left and went upstairs to the room and just ordered room service, which jacked the price.
Even though the staff there is slightly arrogant, a little pre-imposing, stereotypical, and discriminatory against our youthful age, that did not stop me from having a ball at the WIllard.  That place was a party haven for my friends and I.  Everything our little hearts desired we received.  Even though they gave us a hard time about being disorderly, they still let us have our fun.  The bed was great, the room was a relaxed ambience, and the Willard Room restaurant has great duck.  All in all, I gave the Willard 4 and a half stars.  If they could improve upon one thing, it would be the service in the lobby and at the restaurants.  You know, I may be a young lad who likes to party, but I did nothing to cause any trouble at the hotel and I think they acted just out of wish for me.  But as I see it, why try to damper my fun at all?  If the service and staff (excluding room service) could have been a little more friendly and unbiased, this hotel would have made for a super duper ride.

It's like staying INSIDE Abraham Lincoln!  Obviously expensive, but worth it if you want the real upscale DC experience.  If you can get inside the Willard Room, the food is delightful.  You can also have a proper Tea or Coffee in the Peacock Alley.  The round robin bar too was great.  Within walking distance of everything.

What an amazing hotel.  The world famous Willard Hotel is spectacular.  I have never actually spent the night here, but I've been for a couple functions and breakfast one time.  When I went for breakfast there were a couple of things that caused me to raise an eyebrow.  The first was the chairs, which are large and very comfortable.  They really made me feel like royalty.  The second was the woodwork in their dining room.  It was a dead giveaway that I wasn't eating breakfast at any old hotel.  It was meticulously constructed and beautiful, and I'm not usually all that intrigued by woodwork.  I generally find it to be somewhat plain and it tends to fade into the background for me.

For breakfast I had steak and eggs, it was phenomenal.

Great hotel! The rooms are wonderful and I particularly love the old world elegance you find throughout! The bar is very fun, as it is a large round, appropriately called "Round Robin."

Ah, the Willard -- a luxurious and wonderfully historic hotel near the White House. The rooms are on the smaller side for D.C., but the service here is excellent and everything is so clean. Hotels like the Willard are the reason I look forward to staying in hotels. I always suggest this place to people coming to D.C., though many are deterred by its price tag. I would say it's worth it, especially if your employer is paying for it, hah. The location couldn't be better for tourists who want to see all the downtown attractions.

Any hotel that calls security when I walk through the door must have good taste. The beds feel like a pile of clouds and the bar is much more laid-back then one might think in such an opulent place.

A historically rich hotel for lobbyists, blocks away from the White House.  Networking is another great word for this hotel.  This is where I met future UPenn associates in Robotics and Engineering; with the help of jazz music, insatiable, hors d'oeuvres, and good wine.
