After staying at a big hotel like the Hyatt, I really appreciated The Whitehall Hotel, and how quiet and cozy it is.

Location, fabulous, a block away from the Hancock Observatory, and a few blocks away from Oak Street beach, and the red line.

The room and bathroom were very nice (see pictures). Luis approved. Layout of room was OK, until I opened the drawers. The bed and drawers are too close to each other, if the drawers are open it blocks the path to walk to the other side of the room. I did not like this, it didn't make me feel fancy anymore.

No nice view here. I don't know if I was just not lucky enough to get a nice view or if all rooms are like this. But since I didn't plan to look out the window that much, it didn't bother me.

One more thing I will complain about is the temperature of the room. I don't know if it was me that didn't know how to work the thermostat thing or if It was set to a standard temperature. I love my room to be über cold, so I can sleep, and every time I would get back to my room after going out, it would be too hot for me. No likey my room warm. So I had to adjust it every time.  Annoying.

The tv was pretty old too, a little upgrade and new furniture wouldn't hurt.

Things I liked, were that it was quiet, it didn't feel like a mall, not a lot of people. Most of the time the elevator was not crowded, and it was fast. The service was very nice. The person at the front desk recommended me going to a nearby Internet cafe to use the computer instead of using the hotel's. That way I would get to use the Internet and get a nice cup of coffee instead of just spending my money at the hotel's business center. I thought that was nice of him.

I stayed here for 4 days. I probably was that guy that came in at 2am every night, that someone commented earlier on their review, but I did not slam the door, the door makes a big noise when it locks. Sorry. Lol. Anyways. I loved coming back to my room and sleeping in that bed after a long night. I'd definitely stay here again.

The things I complained about are no biggie, but if fixed they would get a 5 star.

For the money, a pretty decent hotel in a great location. Some work taking place during my stay, which left my floor feeling like a construction site, although no disturbances to speak of. No view, but like Enrique, I wasn't here to stare out the window. TVs could in fact use a bit of an upgrade, but also not here to sit in my room and watch television. The beds are super soft, which I appreciate. Elevators a little sketch, and a couple that got out as I was getting in to go up to my room on the 10th floor said they'd been stuck for a while. And I was a bit miffed that they charged to access the Internet in the "business center." It's one thing to charge for in-room wireless, but something inside of me says that the hotel should provide guests with basic access to the Web in the lobby or other common areas of the hotel.

At the end of the day, the Whitehall served my purpose and I would stay here again on my next trip to Chicago were I able to get a similar room rate.

Okay. I am SUPER picky about hotels and I usually pick the hotel but this time my b/f chose the hotel.

The Whitehall Hotel is an older hotel. It has old charm and it is in a awesome location. (walking distance to pretty much everything) But, again, it was an older hotel. The elevators were small and every time I walked into my room it smelled like an old folks home. Also, the walls are thin. It never failed, each night at 2am the guy above me came in, slammed his door and took a shower. I could hear it all.

BUT, on a positive note, the staff was friendly and helpful, the hotel was in a good location and the bed was comfortable.

My mom really loved this place. We arrived at 8AM, wanted to check in really early, and they got us in quite early at 12PM. We just walked around town for a bit, and our room was ready. The valet parking was $45 a night (or for 24 hours) but was convenient and safe. They have free coffee and tea in the morning. Only one downer was that wireless is $9.99 a day, what? Who charges for internet these days? I guess they want to keep that also historic just like their building.

You could tell the building wasn't brand new, but the rooms were very clean and neat. Air conditioning worked great and the water pressure was awesome. They have clean down pillows and down comforter which made me feel at home. If it wasn't for the paid wireless internet, I would have given them 5 stars. But it was well worth the $96 I paid through expedia.

I'm going to start this review by saying that I really do despise boutique hotels. To think that for almost the same money I could stay at the Westin or Four Seasons and have all the ammenities I desire makes me wonder why I ever stay in boutique places at all. I don't care what anybody says, boutique means old.

This boutique experience was a work necessity. They picked the hotel. It actually wasn't that bad. The staff when I got there was friendly. The staff when I left was friendly. I was the staff in the middle I didn't really appreciate.

I also didn't appreciate the ancient elevator or the fact that I did end up in a lovely penthouse with a view only to wake up in the morning and realize the shower didn't work. After five calls to the front desk asking for a maintenance person to come up they sent the bellman instead to move my bags to another room. ??????? OK....

Anyway, when he moved me had he had the nerve to ask if I'd pulled the knob out! Of course I did! I'm not a freakin idiot. I do shower regularly. And in my showering career, I've definitely used a few different types of faucet. I've got it covered, I think.

The bed at this place was actually really comfortable though and the mini bar was well stocked.

This spot is walking distance to the best shopping in Chicago and also some great eats. I really enjoyed the close proximity to the Miracle Mile and Viagra Triangle.

The rooms were clean and well appointed. It was also nice to have the bar downstairs even if they did have last call at 11:30.

Historic building with great employees, stellar location, and hard to beat price. 3.75 stars

Cost to worth it ratio: 5 (we got this room for an average of ~$130/night including taxes! Four Seasons a few steps away goes for quadruple that.)

Highlights:
- Location: half a block from the famous Michigan Ave, across the street from Bloomingdale's on one side and the Hancock Tower on the other. Walking distance to most everything and short cab ride to Lincoln Park area.
- Service: fantastic. After being checked in, they called a few minutes after we got settled to check how everything was. When we had to take the service elevator, we didn't complain but they apologized and let us take the hotel town car to dinner on them. :-)
- Amenities: gym, 24 hr room service, restaurant/bar, wine shop, and mini bar.
- Historic: building's been around forever--they have a 3 page story of it in the hotel's info binder.

Midlights:
- Atmosphere: rooms and lobby isn't anything special, but they're fine.

Lowlights:
- Only had 2 queen bed room when we checked in
- 1 of 2 elevators they had was out the whole time. There are several floors, so that slowed things down quite a bit at times.

On the place alone I might not be too impressed, but the price, service and location bumps it up a few notches so I'd consider staying here again.

Mom stayed here on one of her visits and she LOVED it.  View of the Hancock.  She found the location exceptionally convenient.  We had a car and driver at our disposal - scheduled times.  Everyone was authentically friendly, but ultimately service-oriented and elegantly mannered.  I brought flowers for her and the maid went out of her way to find a bottle/vase for us which worked out perfectly.  I sometimes wonder if real service still exists in this modern and too egalitarian society (meaning disrespectful and/or just poor or absent etiquette) and then I think of the Whitehall.  Hats off.  I suggest setting up your parents here if they like a smaller-scale more personable hotel, someone who remembers what real service is, or anyone you wish to especially impress in subtle and quiet ways without having to choose the modern and massive usual suspects.

I love this hotel! It is really close to Michigan Avenue, but on a quiet street. The location is excellent, and the staff are welcoming and friendly. The room prices are very reasonable, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. We booked a block of rooms for our wedding, and were so happy with how everything turned out. Our guests loved the location, the rooms, and were very satisfied with the room prices. While it is not new or very modern, the rooms are very nice and I would recommend this hotel.

Friendly staff, clean rooms, but no free wi-fi!  $9.99/24hrs and the quality was bad at that.  Signal, no signal, signal...

Room service always efficient and friendly.  Breakfast average.  Air conditioner broke twice, owner apologetic.  Not our choice Chicago hotel, but it's in our timeshare network so we make do.

I was in town for a conference, and they suggested the Whitehall.  First, the hotel is in a prime location near Rush Street and The Lake...Perfect for eating, drinking and jogging.

This is a really different hotel.  Instead of a grand lobby like The Drake, it is rather small almost befitting a B&B.  The rooms, however, are spacious and lovely.

Did I mention the rooms?

A lovely hotel, although the rooms on the higher floors seem to be more recently renovated (it would probably have only gotten three stars if I'd stayed in my friend's room down on the third floor instead of my lofty one with the fluffy comforters and down pillows on the 16th). It's really close to Michigan Avenue shopping and the feeble contemporary art museum, but a bit of a walk to the Art Institute and Millenium Park.

Everytime my parents come to town they stay at The Whitehall due to a friend's discount. We love it there. Its downtown in the mix but its not too touristy and its not too crowded. Great customer service and great rooms. I love going to the bar for a quick cocktail before heading out to dinner. The beds are super comfortable. The Whitehall is just fabulous!

I love old fashioned hotels, but love my comfort too!  The Whitehall has both!  It has a wonderful history since 1920s, and a charming atmosphere.  Our room was a bit on the small side compared to more modern hotels, but otherwise very comfortable.  The hotel is connected to an italian restaurant Fornetto Mei which also includes a bar and a connecting lounge area between the hotel and restaurant with comfy sofas and seating  to relax with friends.  The hotel is just off Michigan Avenue near the Water Tower Place - a great area with lots of great restaurants, sights and shopping.  If you have a car, the valet parking is very convenient.  It was $39 in May 2007 with unlimited in-out privleges.  I did notice a public parking across the street on Delaware Ave. that might be cheaper, but sometimes it's just so nice to let the valet handle it!

NOTE:  I have never actually stayed in the hotel -- this is for their bar/restaurant.

Ok, I must admit, I used to be the kind of girl who loved hotel bars.  But that was a lifetime ago and I stopped that sort of thing.  But, awhile back, I started getting my hair done across the street at Studio 110 and having cocktails before and after at the Whitehall across the street (seriously, try going to your next hair appointment loaded - it's super fun.)  Anyway, it's not your typical hotel bar.  And the food is delicious.  Specifically, the pot stickers (those are the ones that are steamed right?)  Well, these motherf*ckers changed my life.  That and their pizzas.  delicious.  use the hot chili oil.  do it!  Me and two others split a pizza and had a dozen dumplings (they had a few -- i had many) and a a delicious Cab.  I was in heaven.  Pure heaven.  Do it.  The next time you are downtown or at Studio 110, go here for food and drinks.  Plus, when you walk to the back bar area (not the restaurant) you can sit on big plush couches and chairs and hang out and drink and eat.  It's so not typical Michigan Ave.

I bet staying at the hotel is nice too...get loaded and roll on up to bed.

Chicago has many lovely smaller old-fashioned hotels of the boutique variety. The Whitehall may just be the classiest of the bunch. It can barely be categorized as a smaller hotel, but with slightly over 200 rooms it definitely is no behemoth convention hotel. The building is a charmer, and it has a great location just off from Michigan Avenue. The rooms are plush and so are the bathrobes.
