Where else can you get a double cheeseburger and a diet coke for $4.50 that has not been sitting under a heat lamp for the last 20 minutes? the ingredients were fresh and the burger was "light," as opposed to a burger from BK or Carl's that sits in your stomach like a rock .
The food is a solid 3 stars, cash only. Its not gourmet, but this place got personality - and personality goes a long way. Worth a try.
Nearly everything about this hut is perfect.
Lunch =
Appetizer - rainbow sprinkle doughnut
Entree - 2 cheeseburgers with everything.
beverage - Dr. Pepper, cup of ice.
This works every time.
Food is cheap! Quality is fine. Quantity is small. But really what can you expect from a small burger shack. I like the fact that they are fast and around $5 for a complete meal. Also there is something about eating is a little hole in the wall that is very comforting. Oh and this is a Mom & Pop place so that's a big plus. And remember CASH ONLY!
like other reviewers, the food is definitely cheap for the quality! I tired it first time today and had the double cheeseburger w/ everything and added bacon, it was very much satisfying... i'm sure we'll go again for lunch more often!
I didn't know about this place until I attended the California School of Culinary Arts literally right across the street. Yes, it seems weird for a professionally trained chef to be seen around the likes of The White Hut, but personally in my opinion, it's small joints like this that help define All-American food. That and I wasn't the only student who went there.
I agree with Mike that the burgers are a little smaller than what we're used to, but the fact that it's all cooked right in front of you totally makes up for it. You go there enough (which I did) in a short period of time, the waitress/manager/owner will begin to recognize you and know what you want as soon as you walk in.
I mean, this place is in no means gourmet, but how can you beat a hot cooked-to-order cheeseburger, freshly fried french fries and cold soda?
I would definitely consider this a "hidden treasure"
Used to go here when i went to CSCA (culinary school across the street) back in 00'. I love love love small little hole-in-the-wall places, and it gets more points if its open kitchen. i used to pop in here and get a breakfast sand.(ham/egg/cheese/grilled...mmm) and an OJ before cruising into class. Was never disapointed, and i have to make it back sometime soon.
I grew up in the Pasadena area but never ate at The White Hut until I moved a few blocks away. Lucky me...This place is great for a quick lunch or breakfast with very, very friendly people working there and awesome food.
The portions are smaller than your average burger joint, however, the prices are adjusted accordlingly. Burger, fries, and coke are about $7.00-8.00 after tip. Totally worth it as the food is great and they cook it right in front of your face.
Being a local, it's also very convenient for a quick breakfast. I can get my sunny side up eggs, sausage, hash browns, OJ/coffe and be out of there in 10-15 minutes if they aren't too busy.
The only thing thing that I don't like is that The White Hut closes at 3:00pm. There's been so many occassions where I'm just sitting around my apartment, being a lazy ass and want a good burger in the afternoon/evening. I don't just want some piece of crap fast food burger, but something good, that's not going to cost me $12.00 like any of the other descent restaurants in the area. I'd probably eat here about twice as much if they were open longer hours and on Saturday too.
Simply put: burgers, fries and a waitress that will ask you why you aren't married yet. I used to frequent this place every week when I was in Pasadena. My mom worked across the street so when I would wait for her, she would send me over toThe White Hut for some grub.
I always ordered a lemonade, though they made ice by filling a cup half full with water, then freezing it. Because of that, the lemonade was always warm, yet the glass too cold to hold.
This place is a neighborhood gem that only has about 4 bar stools in it, and standing room only.
Dirty and cozy, with okay food.I like it.
So, like many others, I used to go to The White Hut all the time hen I worked in the area.
I have since moved to San Francisco where tiny diner-style deli's abound, and on a recent vist to Pasadena was faced with the troubling question of "Where can i go for a breakfast sandwich at 11am on a Thursday that is NOT a Starbucks / Mc Donalds / Trashy Fast food?!"
The answer was The White Hut!
Luckily, I happened to be around the corner at Zona Rosa (which is also my fave non-trash coffee place in Pasadena).
I highly reccommend parking in the Vroman's parking lot, buying a magazine downstairs, and walking (yes, getting off yr ass and moving!) down the street and grabbing coffee at Zona Rosa, and then going around the corner and introducing yourself to the SUPER-nice woman behind the counter at the White Hut!
Bad experience and Donna the owner treats her employees like trash.
Food is cheap, but the quality and quantity is not impressive.
I was really really not impressed.
The white hut and it's 15 or so counter seats stands above and beyond for diner simplicity. Where else are you going to order and the cook can hear you, make eye contact with you and you can watch your meal being prepared literally a few feet away? Simple food for simple folk! So they don't make anything fancy, it's ok. The white hut stands alone in it's individuality. In a land awash in fast food, this is one "fast food" place I'm willing to wait to get a seat for!! A fantastic DIVE!
been going to The White Hut for at least 15 years and you can't beat this place for simplicity, speed, price, and it's cooked in front of you! i go there for lunch and order their burgers (could be a bit bigger, but it's all good). breakfast there is my favorite. been getting the same thing for all these years, two eggs overeasy, toast, bacon, hash browns, o.j., and coffee. all these for under $5.
paul the cook will know your order after a couple visits and donna the owner will definitely know your name. get breakfast at this place and the eggs will somehow be heavenly (it's that grill that's been cooking the same thing a thousand times. it's seasoned).
