28 reviews for The Westin South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa
My mom and I stayed the weekend up in Costa Mesa for a little shopping get away! She is a Starwood member so we were excited to find out there was a Westin within walking distance of South Coast Plaza!! Loved the bridge that goes basically right into the mall!
We arrived early but it was no problem checking in. My mom had requested refrigeration and that was no problem at all...they had already set up a small refrigerator in our bedroom! The bellman was really nice as he unloaded our car and gave us a tour of the hotel! Actually, all the bellman were super attentive as they were always there to open the door for us to go in and out of the hotel.
We had requested an upgraded room and it was nice and spacious. We had two queen heavenly beds which were so comfortable. We were also on the "park" side of the hotel and it was really quiet. We self parked in the parking structure adjacent to the hotel which was very convenient! Since my mom was a Starwood member is was $20 per day for parking.
We loved the walking/running route that they have mapped out for you and walked it everyday!
The only negative was that their internet connection was SO SO SO slow!!

Located right across from South Coast Plaza, what more can a girl ask for? There is an overpass for you to walk over the main street to prevent scary drivers and stoplights!
I stayed here for the weekend and was very comfortable. I loved the beds.. goose pillows.. may i add plenty of pillows just for me? and down comforter, perfect for my minimal sleep i got every night.... Flat screens in the room and working desk with plenty of drawers..safe deposit box is available also. I liked the double head shower.. That was nice and soothing like a massage. Decor was classy and nice and clean. As you enter the hotel, nice decor with flowers at the reception, and my favorite part was the falling waterfall as you see in front of you!!!
Service was pretty good for the most part. If you guys don't know, you can call the operator for things you have forgotten, free of charge. Anything from blow dryer, a fridge for your room for food, toiletries, shaving accessories, toothbrush, toothpaste, games, and etc.. it is all mentioned in the hotel room brochure.. and i took advantage of it and have a travel kit now! :) Service at the pool side on the other hand was extremely slow one afternoon.. the waiter apologized but we were about to leave and we were still waiting on our cheese plate and drinks that we ordered probably 45 minute ago.. This happened to other hotel guests next to us too. Pool side is nice, above the hotel.. staff were setting up 2 weddings that weekend.. so it looked nice with all the decorations... a gym is also available by the pool side! they definitely need more bathing chairs though!!
Valet is provided for a charge of $20 a day. Parking garage also available for a certain price for the whole day also.. my friend came to visit me and parked there at night, which was free since the bars were held up.
I knocked off one star due to no free-wifi.. for an expensive hotel located in such area.. you would expect free wifi for yourself and other businessmen that come along the way...it is a business corporate area! AND the charges were pretty pricey for one day!

This is a lovely hotel nicely located across a footbridge to the South Coast Plaza Mall. The rooms were really nice, the beds were "heavenly" as advertised and the staff were just amazing and very customer focused. From the check in, to the check out each person was kind, helpful and nice.
*Early check in- Yes, come on in
*Late check out, Yes you can.
*Nice driver who raced us to the train station and waited to make sure we made it- fabulous!!
- one star for the benefit held at the pool which lasted until 12 midnight. It was really loud. That was not the hotels fault, but it did impact our rest that night. Luckily the beds were so awesome that we slept well when the noise subsided
Going back soon!

Dual-Head Heavenly Showers and Bed... enough said!
My first time staying at a Westin hotel, and it did not disappoint. For most parts, everything in the room was wonderful. I was surprised on how big the rooms were, even with two beds inside. Big plasma TV, a nice sofa chair with an ottoman, and a full room length counter awaits as you open the door.
The carpet is so soft on your feet, I can just walk around all day on it! And the dual head shower.... OMG... it put any other shower I've taken in my life to shame!
There were two small cons though:
- Room availability: I'm not sure if this is a regular thing at this hotel, but our room was not ready on time. I was asked to come back an hour later. When I came back, I overheard them saying the same thing to a party next to me.... which made me wonder how efficient housekeeping are, considering it was already 4:30 in the afternoon when I came back around.
- You have to pay $20 a night for parking (with ins and outs). Not too bad per say, but it would have been nice if it was included.
Overall, I definitely would stay here again.
I like the Westin, especially this property, it's strategicly close to the OC Performing Art Ctr & South Coast Plaza Mall. The lobby is simplistic minimalist with gorgeous fresh flowers arrangements. And the waterfall? I call that understated elegance. It's no Ritz or St. Regis, but their service is fantastic. Price-wise, it's ok, worth the money.
Disappointing to say the least, but most domestic hotels that flaunt their "luxury" brand usually are. This one hits that dead on the spot. I sorta expected this as this location is more a "neighborhood" convention spot then it is a downtown spot. When driving up to it, it doesn't look like your normal Westin hotel (I mean its not an airport location either) and definitely looks like Starwood bought up this property and changed the sign to Westin. It definitely looks very Holiday Innish in its exterior design.
The lobby is quite impressive, valet was super efficient but expensive ($28) and the location is right across from the South Coast Plaza. At check-in, given a room on the 11th floor (SPG floor) for being a Gold member, but no breakfast was given.
The thing that annoyed me most was the fact that the interior was renovated with the normal Westin items, but was awaken several times at night by slamming doors and loud AC. This is is a WESTIN, not a holiday inn and the fact that couldn't soundproof the place was ridiculous. The AC rattles when its on and we had to turn it off to sleep. Bathroom is definitely low end and not up to par with the Westin brand. Fits more like a Four Points Sheraton.
Even though South Coast Mall was next to our hotel, we still had to drive there, check out our car from the valet and head over. The pool was CLOSED for renovation and I had planned to get some swimming done in their pool. They have no concierge lounge which is unheard of at a Westin Hotel. Per night rate at this hotel goes for ~300/night. Definitely not worth it and you might as well stay in a downtown location (I stayed here since it was close to a friend's house). Had I not gotten 50% off this hotel, I would've been superbly pissed.
This hotel caters to business travelers who get in at night and leave at the day, therefore there seems to be no need to provide the "little" things. The clientele seems to be mostly convention goers with the occasional vacationer. I would definitely not stay here again.

What? No dog bowls? Housekeeping couldn't bring us dog bowls because they said they "ran out". How do you run out of these? Was the house full of dogs? Hmmm...
Anyways, they would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for this snafu.
Very nice room with modern touches, and dark brown wooden details... The heavenly bed was fabulous as usual.
Parking was $18 for self and the garage is just a short walk away.
There is a large grassy area right in front for doing doggy business. We took Simba off leash and played with him in the evening and everyone was super cool.
Usually, their dog weight limit is 40 lbs - this kills me!!! but I spoke with the manager and she was kind enough to bend the rule a bit. Yay!

This Westin caters to the corporate shopper on a business trip. The rooms are high-speed ready and there's even a manager's reception in the evening to help you unwind. Dual-head Heavenly Showers and Heavenly Bed come standard. As you step out of the Hotel, a dedicated archway over the busy road takes you to the famous South Coast Plaza where stars, celebrities, artists, etc. are known to drop major $$$$$.
Love the location! It's within walking distance to South Coast Plaza, the Noguchi Sculpture Gardens, Orange County Performing Arts Center and South Coast Repertory Theatre.
Attended the Oxygen Ball (hosted by the American Lung Association of California) here at the Westin South Coast Plaza. The lobby was nice with the waterfall, bar, and many areas to sit, and upstairs, the pool area looked absolutely lovely!
The food was GREAT -- the roasted tenderloin was to die for. The staff was hospitable, the hotel itself very clean, and the parking price moderate. If I were an out-of-towner, I'd definitely book a night or two here! :)

Here's the good and the bad.
Good:
+ Location is pretty central if you have a car and want nice dinner spots for dinner (e.g. Mastros) as well as nice, leisurely dinner spots (e.g. Anjin, Lawry's at the mall). This place also has great lunch spots, too (e.g. Corner Bakery, Chipotle, the food court at Mitsuwa).
+ The pool is on the large size but don't expect anything super huge.
+ The gym is nice and clean. A bit small, though, considering there are only 4 treadmills and two ellipticals.
+ The bed is a Heavenly Westin bed. There's nothing more to say.
The bad:
- Sometimes the rooms aren't fully clean upon arrival. While I've stayed at several hotels before and this is definitely one of the cleaner ones, I've always managed to find a stray hair or two on the sink countertop or in the bathtub.
- The air conditioner can be loud if you're a light sleeper.
- If you get the freeway side of the hotel, you can expect noise.
- The tub is in sore need of an upgrade. The grout is yellowing.
- There can be plumbing problems at times. I've stayed here several times and my sink wouldn't drain properly. I've even come back to my room to find the sink plastered with a gunky black mess that I can only assume was waste that billowed up and then went back down.
Overall, this is a nice hotel but don't expect something uber fancy. It's a pretty standard hotel that is just slightly better than the others.
Home of the heavenly bed. Very soft, very conducive to sleeping.
It felt so good that I didn't think much of knockin boots w/my lady! I didn't want to go for round 2, I just wanted to lie on my pillow and K.O!
In summer months though, their A/C went down. The ENTIRE DAY. They tried telling me that it would be fixed, bear with us, etc, but after I called them 5 times, over the course of 3 hours, they finally waived the cost of the room and gave us two free drinks to relax. That was nice of them, but I would prefer a functioning A/C man! Since I had lovely company, it wasn't that bothersome, but still unacceptable for a 4 star.
Nice pool, interior is nice in the lobby, carpeting and elevators are chill too.
We took the $130 we saved and went shopping.

I am a Marriott platinum member and a Starwood platinum member. I've stayed in the Westin South Coast Plaza over 80 times. This is the most consistently outstanding hotel I've ever experienced. The rooms are always right, the staff is always gracious and the food is always excellent. I often order a bowl of mixed berries in the evening, even though it is not on the menu, and they always accommodate me. Not only that, but the berries are always outstanding... no matter what time of year it is. The prices are also competitive.
This is the best hotel for 20 miles in any direction.
Book this baby on Priceline. $200 for two nights including taxes.
Heavenly bed: nice, but really not any more comfy than my FIRM Sealy.
Knick knacks: I'm a dork, I collect room keys and I was impressed by the variety of chic photos on them: shells and goldfish. Post-its with the same photos were scattered through the room.
No flat screen here. Room service adds a service charge, but tip is still needed.
Toiletries: Scents were not my cup of tea, I wasn't even tempted to swipe anything. No cotton balls, q-tips, mouthwash.
Bathrobe was provided. Yes, just ONE bathrobe. No slippers to shuffle around in.
Parking: Valet $20, $14 for self park, per day, with in and out privileges. If you're a night owl like me, the valet closes, and you'll have to self-park, and take the STAIRS, b/c they close the elevators in the parking structure.

I love the Westin hotels, but this one gets one star knocked off due to its location. Situated right across the street from South Coast Plaza, it is right by a busy street which means not much privacy really.
The beds are all comfy because after all, it IS the Westin and all Westins come with their signature bedding. Bathrooms aren't all that flash... really average in comparison for a hotel of this caliber.
Still, often, you can catch a great deal on the internet which means you've gotten a great deal to stay at a Westin property for less than what you would normally pay (around what you may have to pay for a Best Western or even Holiday Inn).
And that is just SUPER!
This is one of my favorite hotels to stay at while I am in the Orange County area. It is central to everything. One of the best reasons I choose this hotel is because I can always expect good service and nice, large rooms at Westin.
They have an outdoor pool that is heated. The recently updated the gym area that is right next to the pool. It is not connected to the hotel, you have to walk around the pool area to get to it.
As for the rooms. It is your typical Westin. Modern hotel with the best beds in the hotel industry. I will be buying my very own in a few months.
There is one restaurant that is inside the hotel. It is a French inspired restaurant. I only had breakfast here. It was very good although a bit expensive for breakfast.
There is a gift shop and a small lobby that is also a bar/lounge toward the evening. The lobby was recently updated and has your typical comfortable Westin furniture. The service was always good and prompt. I had several mojitos that were great.
The only thing i don't like is that the parking. Unless you use the valet, the parking is across the street in a garage, although clean and safe, that is shared by the theater next door. The hotel does have its own floor in the garage so no worries if they happen to have an event at the theater next door.
one nice option is the walking bridge that connects the hotel directly to the mall. It is about a five minute walk across and will take you directly to the mall bypassing the streets and parking lots.
If you plan to go out to some local eateries that are close by, take advantage of the free shuttle that is provided. Of course you should tip, but it is worth it and probably much cheaper than a cab. They have a shuttle and a town car. They will give you their card and you can just phone them when you are ready to be picked up.
If you do decide to stay here, you will enjoy it. The hotel was recently renovated and as always, smells great as soon as you walk in.
The rooms are spacious with big flat screens and super comfy beds. They have the heavenly showerheads. The room was really clean, they let me check in early. And to top it all off, as a starwood preferred guest credit card member, the room was only $60 (and 4,000 starwood points). You can't beat a nice hotel for that price.
Granted, it's not the St. Regis or a Four Seasons, but it's a great less expensive alternative and the service during my stay was still excellent.
I would stay at this Westin again. I especially enjoyed the gym! It's small, but very relaxing and faces the pool & everyone gets his or her own personal TV. Gym is equipped with copies of Runner's Magazine.
Self-park is $18 per night and they bill it to your room. Overall, under $200/ night. Not bad for the location & convenience. The fact that they allow dogs & don't charge extra for their stay outweighs the parking fee, so bring your pooch! I'll use my Starwood Preferred Card to redeem points at this hotel next time.
For the price, its pretty tough to beat this Westin. The bed was awesome! Cushy and plenty of 'real' pillows (not that crappy foamy shit). The pool was nice to hang out too, under the sunny skies of the O.C.
Right across the street from south coast plaza where there's great shopping!
For late night stuff... Room service stops around 11.30pm, but there's a domino's nearby which the operator has the number for.
The nicoise salad isn't very good... the tuna was way overcooked, and the flavor wasn't that great.
Great hotel and location, value for the money.
We went down there last summer for a wedding in Huntington Beach and found all the hotels near the beach too pricey. We found the Westin and were pleasantly surprised. We were upgraded to a beautiful suite and found the hotel beautiful and modern. I really liked the pool area (trendy) and the gym had all the latest equipment.
Plus, you can access the great South Coast Plaza Mall, right across the street via footbridge.
One of the best Westins I've stayed at.
Pretty typical Westin, it was under renovation the last time I was here to bring it up to par. Small lobby and bar area, and the hotel's parking structure is detached.
Location is convenient to South Coast Plaza, the Performing Arts Center, and SNA.
Although it was well into the evening when we arrived, one of the people I was traveling with was given a room that had not been made up yet. Gross.
As a kid, I remember coming here for the hotel brunch for special occasions. It has been through a number of incarnations, and this is one of the better ones.
The Starwood Group does a good job on keeping their Westin properties nice. The South Coast Plaza location is a good example. In what could very well be a tired old property there is instead a bright clean and luxuriously nice hotel. The property is an older building, so the rooms, halls, and lobby are all spacious and well appointed.
The rooms have 36" flat screen TVs and nice furnishings. The pool and fitness center are really nice.
This is a great place to stay if you have to be in Orange County.
Stayed here again while in The OC and its still the same great service, great locale, and at a reasonable price.

DH and I had a fantastic stay. The bed, the sheets, the room, everything was first class! There is a lovely waterfall outside, where we sat and chatted. Would recommend to anyone who just wants to get away.
A Westin like all others... the perks of this one include a courtyard with waterfalls, a big lobby to have drinks/do work, and an easy walk to South Coast Plaza across the street, where fine dining, fast food and designer clothing abound.

Because it's location next to several major corporate buildings this hotel is very much a business hotel. They do have a decent pool but IIRC the lobby looks right into the pool area which is great if you are in the lobby but not so great if you are in your bathing suit at the pool with people in business suits watching you.

Clean, comfortable, affordable with a nice lobby bar. Relaxing pool and exercise area. Good location for a day of shopping and/or a night at the theater. We'll stay here again.
I held a 2 day meeting here a while back. Staff was excellent. My only gripe was they charged us a huge telephone fee for our conference call. Watch out for this. Besides that everything else was awesome - we walked over to South Coast across the street for all of our team dinners. It was really convenient!
