Coronary bypass? Oh yes, that name was screaming in my head as soon as I saw it. How can you pass up a name like that?
My only complaint is now I have to make it back down to ATL and get the Elvis burger (really).
Even with the promise of death, the burger was worth losing that extra month in my life. Coupled with tater tots and I would die a happy man.
I'm going to keep this review to a few key points, as people have done a pretty comprehensive job of telling you what's legit here.
1. You can call-ahead for seating. These are not dinner reservations, but they do put you on the top of this list when you do show up. Not sure if this is for all numbers of parties, but definitely legit for larger parties.
2. The burger is what people come here for. It's not the best burger ever, but it is a solid meal-- not too pricey and will fill you up. The beef is good, but could have been a bit more flavorful. Sweet potato fries are pretty average here.
I've heard the vegetarian options here are legit, as they offer a vegetarian version of most things on the menu. However, given that I will never be vegetarian, I cannot speak to this. My friends approve though.
One of Atlanta's best burger spots for sure. We went there today for lunch. I love the buffalo blue burger with tator tots, i just think the fact that tator tots are an option is fabulous. The bison burger is good too and a less fatty. The sweet potato fries and the sauce that comes with them is pretty fantastic also.
The service is just ok. I get it, they have tattoos pink hair crazy piercings etc but that should not negate the quality of service. It is always kind of blah and today was no different. She forgot someones drink, did not bring any salad dressing for another, and got another order completely wrong. Not so great. But oh boy did she look "edgy", which is cool for the place, even if the service sucks.
BUT the food is good and worth dealing with the other bullshit.
Not sure how much can really be added here, but nevertheless I'll still give my take. The burgers are always tasty and prices are affordable. I recently enjoyed the blue shroom burger. There was way too much bleu, so I elected to push some off to the side. Other than that, great burger. The fried eggplant is very good as well. This is also one of the few restaurants where I thoroughly enjoy their music selections!
Absolutely one of the best bars I have been to! I frequent this place often! I have been almost 10 times! AND DON'T be afraid of the Elvis Burger either! Try it!!! But there burgers are huge! They have alot of TV's in there, and the atmosphere is friendly!
I think I might still be full, a good twelve hours later, from my meal at The Vortex last night. Unless your name begins with "L" and ends with "ester," do not for a moment think that it's a wise choice to order an appetizer, a burger, and expect to finish all of your food. If you've dined with me, you know I never leave anything on my plate.
I left stuff on my plate.
Points go to having Unibroue Fin du Monde here. Although it was bottled, it was the same deliciousness that I had for the first time at RFD a few months ago (at the behest of Hyunoo P). Apparently, their beer selection can be so extensive and sporadic, that our server had to keep referring to her cheat sheet to figure out if what we wanted was in stock. At least there wasn't running back and forth to check.
I prefer just being rejected outright, as opposed to teased/led on first.
And as always, it's impossible to go wrong with the Vortex Fondue (oh, tater tots, how I adore thee), and an enormous burger, cooked to a perfect medium, topped with 'shrooms and bleu cheese, served with a side of crisp onion rings.
Just thinking about it is making me feel full again. Meh. Food baby.

My boy and i go here every monday night for the trivia. We sit at the bar where the tender is usually Steven or Jason..both very very cool dudes who never forget a drink order! The food is always excellent..try the big blue buffalo burger...its got about 10,000 calories but its so delicious.
Sadly, my hamburger was mediocre. I had the plain burger, medium rare, and found it quite mushy, although not quite bad enough to send back. If you go (against my advice) get the burger at least medium.
It avoids one star only through the Cuban sandwich, which was pretty good.
The sandwiches are not as good as I remembered.
Today I tried the:
Vortex Cuban - flavorful, though a bit small. a solid 4 stars.
Blue 'Shroom Burger - huge, delicious, not greasy, but not the best burger ever. I ordered it medium rare, but the server gave me a medium burger. Also, the meat seemed to have been cooked on a grill, because there was no hint of smokiness in it. Ten to fifteen minutes after submitting my order on a Friday night, my hamburger arrived at my table, lukewarm with cold tater tots. 3.5 stars.
I definitely prefer eating outside at the cute cafe tables in this early autumn weather. The neighborhood seems to be decent, so I did not fear for my life while eating dinner outside.

possibly the best burgers I've eaten in Atlanta. They're huge, juicy, but not too greasy.

After hearing one too many stories of friends getting food poisoning at the Little 5 location, I was wary of checking this place out. However, I was convinced to try to the Midtown location, and thankfully I didn't get a burger with a side of e.coli!
The burgers here are certainly huge, as are many of the other sides and appetizers. Of course, it's a rare treat to find giant baskets of fried pickles with ranch for dipping, so I'm always pleased with that order. I've not been adventurous enough (much less hungry enough!) to try any of the more exotic burgers - want grilled cheese for buns? - but I can say that the regular burgers are great. There's also a large beer/liquor selection, and if you're looking for the Laughing Skull Lounge's comedy shows, you're in the right location. You won't find the bikers and the leather here, but the crowd is always friendly and the decor still screams "biker bar", which is a pleasant surprise compared to the other Midtown restaurants around here.
My only weird experience so far was when I asked for Sweet Tea Vodka on the rocks. I got a strange look and asked about a mixer a few times before the waitress finally realized that I was serious. That stuff doesn't need a mixer, thank you! She was sweet beyond that, so I won't hold my "odd" request against her, but it was a little presumptuous.
If memory serves me correctly, the Vortex is now 18+, but if you're 21+, keep the ID out if you plan on ordering a drink. They will card you again for that!
My first trip here was just to the bar for quick drink, since the kitchen had closed just before we arrived. The bartender was friendly but straight to the point, which I appreciate, we ordered our drinks and got them fast and they weren't too weak which was even better! Often times I've been to places were the drinks are a bit weak for the first few rounds then as the bartenders get to know you they get stronger, but not here! So that was a good experience on trip one.
My next two trips here were just as good with the added bonus of actually eating food! I had a Lobster Melt which was fantastic, a giant glass of iced tea (I love giant cups of cold iced tea, unsweet thank you very much, sugar doesn't belong in tea) and the best side dish ever created in a kitchen, Sweet Potato Fries!! I will go back there as many times as possible while I'm here just for those fries! Who would have thought golden sticks of sunshine could be improved upon! I also had their black bean burger patty which was fantastic too and the bonus with that was that the burger came with more sweet potato fries!
In short, go try the sweet potato fries and have a drink while you're there!
I could go on so I will just say Blueshroom burger, tots, and one of the many many beers or bourbons and you should have no complaints. The chili is really good too. Ok I'm done.
There is a lot of talk about their cooking methods but if it looks good eat it. And this looked extremely good so on my trip to Atlanta this past September i had it and i was not disappointed neither were any of my friends that went. The food was great but service wasn't to good. It wasnt bad just could of been better.
Has one of the best Burgers in Atlanta. The Beer and Drink menu puts so many other bars to shame. I usually get bacon cheese burger with either tots or fried zucchini, It's the best. Make sure you ask what beers are on the rotating casks.
I came here on a Sunday afternoon after the Pride parade and it was packed! We didn't have much to eat and sipped on mimosas all morning, so we needed some greasy food. This was the perfect place for that! I love the burgers here. I usually get the mushroom and swiss turkey burger. I'm trying to cut some calories so I can eat the onion rings too! Turkey burgers are $.75 extra and onion rings are $2 extra. Their tator tots and sweet potato fries are also yummy. I've had their chicken before too, but I def prefer the burger! Great place to soak up the alcohol in your system or to add more!
Excellent beer selection, good bartenders, tasty bar food!
Food:
I usually get the Cuban sandwich here. It's delicious - maybe not authentic - ummm but it's a bar - in Atlanta - not Cuba. Their tater tots are yummy! Nice and crispy and you get a mess of them. If I am not getting the Cuban I get the club sandwich or the corn dogs. The club sandwich is huge! Always have leftovers and it's very tasty! The corn dogs are sooo good! I can feel the fat going to my hips as I eat them though because they are the biggest corn dogs I have ever seen (well even the little corn dogs at other venues can't be considered diet food!) My significant something got the chicken tenders. They were delicious. Big pieces of crunchy chicken tenders nice and crispy with the meat not dried out. So good! We had the rest for a snack later and it was still yummy!
Booze:
Beer, beer, beer. They have so many beers here. Pretty much anything you want they have it in bottle. I don't drink much draft cept for Guinness and Hoegaarden - but they have tons of drafts here too. They do a big pour not your standard pint. They make an excellent black velvet - delicious Guinness and cider - yum! They have pretty tasty bloody marys - sometimes they get a little crazy with the heat though.
Atmosphere:
Cool place. Pretty dark. Comfortable bar stools. Lots of things to look at strewn about on the walls. Nice clean bathrooms that always have toilet paper!
Servers/Bartenders:
I like these people. It used to be a little attitudelicious back in the day (5 years ago). Bartenders are pretty nice now. Make you feel welcome to be there and they're great about checking up on you when you need them or will need them shortly. They'll even walk me through the beer list when I get stumped by the amazing amount of beers I am looking at.
Great place for beer and a bite!
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Vortex yet. One of my favorite places to go, I always look forward to taking visitors here! My favorite appetizer are the fried zucchinis with avocado ranch dip and the onion rings! MMMMM! Plus they have top rated burgers, huge salads and great drinks! Plus its a great atmosphere and they don't bull$hit you.
Great burgers! How can you go wrong with tater tots?!?!
This is my favorite Vortex location. Vortex serves up a mean burger, with so many different variations and topping choices it will make your head spin. I like to keep it simple and go for a cheeseburger with bacon. I really go to Vortex for their side items, tater tots and fried zucchini, yum!!!
FYI, Regulars to the spot recommend the house poker tournament for house cash, pretty cool!
I would avoid this place if you would like to fit into your pants tomorrow. Why? For starters there's no way that you aren't going to choose something slathered in cheese, bacon, or all things fatty and it's probably going to taste delicious. You'll tell yourself Oh i'll only have half of my lobster melt with 1lb of cheese but then you can't stop yourself mid sandwich. For side you see sweet potato fries, french fries, chips & tots.. and really who can say no to tots? Add a beer and there's no way you're going to escape Vortex without a full on food coma and the need for a long nap.
I had the Coronary Bypass burger.
The huge burger was very juicy and tasty. Along with that were good sides and even had a taste of the Elvis burger. That was surprisingly not bad. I still think it's so wrong.
In addition great beer selection and a fun place to go out at night.
Downside for me at least was the indoor smoking, but didn't lower ratings cause that's just my personal preference.
Finally - i went to the Vortex. Long wait, but it was a Saturday night...so its expected.
I'm on a mission to find a delicious jerk turkey burger...i ordered one here. and although it was good, the jerk sauce was really really salty!! i thought i was gonna die. however, the sweet potato fries were good. the burger was so big and i had soooooooo many fries, i didn't even finish everything. Even though the jerk burger wasn't what i expected - or really tasted like jerk, it was still a pretty good turkey burger.
i'm excited to go back and try something different.
sit on the patio...its wonderful for people watching. love the fact that you can't bring children (sorry to all the parents out there).
The Little 5 location may be more "authentic," but Midtown is MUCH closer to my house, which makes it more authentic for me.
Vortex probably ranks among the top 20 burger joints in the country - with lots of flavorful options available in beef, chicken, turkey, bison, and veggie varieties. The chilli and nachos also kick tremendous amounts of butt.
The service is friendly to friendly people, and the waitresses look like they walked out of an emo kid's fantasy. (That is sorta a good thing.) The beer selection is also impressive, from Miller Lite to Chamay, you will find something you like.
Vortex, how I missed you while I was living in what I like to call "sucky burger hell" aka NYC. I couldn't find a decent burger in that whole damn place so upon returning to Atlanta, I had to go here. We normally go to the L5P location but it was when the Inman Park festival was going on and I was not going anywhere near L5P while that was going on.
The burger was better than I remembered them being. Maybe I was just so used to terrible burgers after living in NY, I thought I had found nirvana.
This is how a burger should be!
I had a hoegarten and wings. The wings were good, but not outstanding, The service was nice, but not outstanding and the ambiance was good, but not outstanding. I'd go back though, give the burgers a try
Double coronary bypass burger, it is to die for!!!
This restaurant has a attitude in a very cool way...
Label me a tourist, but yes I came here solely for the double-bypass burger featured on Man vs. Food. And no, I didn't travel to Atlanta just for a burger! (though I most likely would if it looked good enough)
I was delighted to find that it's actually a really cool place, with really cool staff. Our waitress was acerbic but more in a cool way than a bitchy way. We started with the tater tot fondue, which was good but maybe a bit unnecessary given the double bypass that would soon be arriving. Tots were nice and crisp, and the cheese was...well, warm and cheesy. Not really anything amazing, but it was large and worth getting to share, especially since they give you a hearty amount of cheese which will outlast the tots but can be used to dip fries or tots you get with your burger (you are gonna order a burger, right??)
And what burgers they are! Large patties, perfectly grilled, and served up in so many different ways. I'm sure there's a description of the double-bypass somewhere on here, but if not here's my rendition: a half pound burger w/ cheese, 2 fried eggs, 5 strips of bacon, sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Not quite as big as I was expecting, but pretty much as unhealthy as I was expecting. The grilled cheeses were actually the most overwhelming aspect of it, and the excessive cheese I think unbalanced any of the texture from the bacon. It tasted good, and the burger was excellent, but in the future I'd stay away from the grilled cheese as they made it just a bit too cheesy for me. It was fun to get and tell everyone I ate it, but once is enough. Hopefully I'll be back in Atlanta to try some of the other burgers here!
Normally i would probably have been intimidated by a place where the waitresses are all tatooted and edgy and some of the decorations are seriously scary. But i really wasn't. Maybe it was a extensive beer list? Maybe it was the fact that we had Kathleen here as our "atlanta interpreter"? Maybe it was because as i walked back to the bathroom at least three people stopped me and said "Good Luck" as i was wearing my Villanova tee shirt? Everyone seemed like they were happy and enjoying life. Not what i expected at all!
And i understand why they were in such a good mood. I bet they had the tater tot fondue! Ok so its not real fondue... just melted cheese to dip your tater tots in, but seriously what is better than that? Well I'll tell you... the fact that there was more cheese than tater tots! Which some people might be upset about, but then your can also get tater tots with your meal! Which i did. My chilli cheeseburger was so awesome. I went with the turkey chilli, since if i am going to eat a chili cheeseburger i might as well try to be slightly healthy right? The burger was thick and juicy and the chilli was slightly spicy but really on point with flavor. I really wanted to be able to finish it but after i could start to feel my coronary arteries clog, i decided to stop. I didn't even finish my tater tots! Never did i ever think i would leave tater tots behind! Wow.
Overall, the waitstaff was friendly, despite their tough outer shell and the food was excellent. I will definitely be back... but i think i may have to order a salad... and some tater tot fondue
I'm learning that I so much prefer this location to the one in Little Five, mainly due to the super friendly waitstaff here. Yes, your waitress may be covered in tats and have purple braids down to her ass, but she'll still serve you with a smile! And that I like.
Yes, the burgers are phenomenal: I always get mine buffalo, and I love that that's an option. Beer list is good, bathrooms are clean, and it serves as a good spot for a variety of functions: lunch, late night drinking, or dinner with a big group of friends. Just don't bring the kids: they're thankfully not allowed.
I call this Vortex the business casual Vortex.
Lunch finds more suits in here then a Men's Warehouse sale.
If you go after the lunch rush there's a 4 hour window when things get weird... after that, I can make no promises.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Red Robin's Emo cousin. Staff is great, ambiance is forced, food is a fatty hangover cure.
Ta-da!
This place is the King of Hamburgers!! I had been told that they were just ok, but I was told wrong. That is by far the best hamburger I have had in a LONG time. I had the Buffalo Bleu Cheeseburger and it was dee-lish.
I came here with frinds on a Wednesday evening and had to wait about 10 minutes to get a seat, but not a bad wait at all. The restaurant is oozing with character, and characters. LOL. Very noisy, but can still carry on a conversation without yelling. The Vortex has a great variety of beers on Tap and served in bottles (my choice is always a Blue Moon with an Orange).
The Vortex Fondue is a must try, and get the tater tots with it (they were cooked to perfection). A cheesy gooey sauce to dip you tots in...they melt in you mouth (almost). Between the good service, the GREAT food, and fun atmosphere, I know I will be back again soon. This is a fun place to hang out with friends and have a tasty meal and a cold beer. There is parking on the street and a couple of lots right across the street as well.
I can't wait to go back. Did I mention the place is really cool too?
Quite an experience if you find yourself in Atlanta and looking for an awesome burger. The place is one of a kind...the entrance alone will tell you that!
Ordered the black n' spicy burger. Really enjoyed it! But to start the meal we ordered the fried zucchini and tater tots with cheese dip! The tater tots are ridiculous here....a must! And the fried zucchini....also a must. Just incredible!
A fun place with really good food....I'll be back someday!
Perhaps I should review this in a two-part series...
We enjoy the beef burgers here, a lot. The black and blue, the black and spicy, the yokohama, the chili, the tots and fries, yada yada. We like both locations, and no, we don't think the burgers "taste better" at the L5P Vortex. I'd say 4 stars.
So this past weekend, we go to the Vortex before the Spinal Tap show at the Fox, and I decided to be healthy and get the turkey patty instead of a beef patty for the Ragin' Cajun. I was expecting a ground turkey patty but instead it was this like, smooshed together chunks of turkey... compressed into an odd patty. It was REALLY nasty and unappealing. Serves me right for trying to be healthy at a place like the Vortex. God that turkey patty option was probably the worst decision I've made in a REALLY long time. -4702472 stars for this travesty.

With all the "upscale" burger joints popping up all over town, when you desire a burger the Vortex… Read more »
I was tired, hungry and had just arrived from the airport at my Midtown hotel on a humid summer evening. While I was on a quick walk around the area to scout out local restaurants I saw the Midtown Vortex and walked in. The host sat me right away at a two-top with a good view of the biker themed decor. After seeing the original location (in Little 5 Pts) I was excited to try the burgers. I got a classic Vortex burger with a scoop of blue cheese and house tater tots. YUM! They weren't kidding about being BBD, big portions. This is well worth the MARTA ride from Peachtree Center to the Midtown station and a short walk if you are staying in near the NHPC conference hotels. Good service (thanks Sherry), good food, and very affordable.
Odd decor, but it's expected. The food is very good! Great potato salad. Great burgers & sandwiches! A real treat...generous portions...try it! It's a bit of a walk, but definitely our place of choice when going to The Fox!
The Vortex is an local institution. It is a bar (two locations, actually) that projects an image between edgy and surly. The front page of their menu explains that there is a "No Whining" policy and that "the customer is NOT always right." But they have surprisingly good food for a bar -- it's not really typical for a bar to have a great Caesar salad or Bison burgers or fried plantains. Also, despite the brusque attitude that they project, I find that the service is pretty decent and they're more than willing to accommodate special requests.
The burgers are usually very good. I'm not going to claim they are hands-down the best burgers in Atlanta, because it depends on your style. Some people swear by H&F or The EARL or Ann's or whatever (and maybe FLIP now that it's the new kid on the block). But I'd say they're definitely a solid bet for burgers in Atlanta, and they have other excellent food.
Anyway, what do I like here? Well, obviously I like many of their burgers. The Cheese, the Patty Melt, the Steakhouse and even the Coronary Bypass (I haven't tried a Double Bypass since they added it to the menu). I also like their atypical sides. Their tots and sweet potato fries are good, but I can't get fried plantains many other places. I also think the Vortex makes a mean Caesar salad (with homemade croutons made from what looks to be marble rye -- a nice touch). For starters, their cheese dip is good, and their nachos are huge. Their salsa is just okay (it was too sweet for me). They also make some good hot non-burger hot sandwiches, but it's hard to pass up a burger when I'm here.
So what don't I like? Well, it's smoky and loud inside, and the parking situation for the Peachtree location sucks. Also there's almost always a wait. But I'm not going to criticize them for being popular; that's what happens when you have good food. I have, on occasion, gotten a burger not cooked to spec. Usually they're perfect, juicy medium, but I have gotten an overcooked burger maybe 5-10% of the times I've been.
So it's not a perfect experience, but they usually do what they do pretty damn well. Overall, the Vortex's burgers will keep me coming back.
I have lived in Atlanta for about 2 years and i am now kicking my butt that i didn't go to the Vortex sooner...Let me tell you this place is definitely my favorite burger joint in ATL now.
First and foremost i had know about this place from quite a lot of friends but never got around to paying it a visit, then just the other day i was watching Food Network and they have this cool show that i enjoy watching called "Diners, Drive-in's, and Dives" hosted by my favorite chef Guy Fieri, after i saw the show about the Vortex Bar & Grill "I said to myself that's it I am GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The Decor is really cool, they loads of cool items all over there walls from HUGE posters of "Suicide Girls" to Skeletons riding bikes, they way they have design the restaurant really took me back.
The Burgers are off da hook, i order a Spanish Fly burger that was cook they way i like it Medium Rare, but they had over 15 different types of burger that i wanted to try, oh yea for those of you would don't eat beef they have "Chicken & Turkey" burgers too.
It really know for their burgers, but i hear they have a Brunch menu that is pretty good too, they also have a full bar that wind around the restaurant, You don't really need a reservation just show up order a few brews and get ready to chow down.
Overall a great place to hang out with some friends definitely a must if visiting Atlanta, oh yea before i forget if you think you can throw down food with the best of them then order the "Double Coronary Bypass" Burger trust me you won't regret it ;)
I had a group of 9 friends meet here and eat before we went into the Laughing Skull Lounge. I did like the relaxed atmosphere, the waitstaff was friendly and the food did come out quickly. I got the Cuban sandwich with a side of coleslaw. I don't know why I continually try Cuban sandwiches in GA. because I have yet to find a good one yet. Not that the sandwich was bad it was just average. The coleslaw was awful. It was room temp and little to no flavor. My partner got the Swiss mushroom burger. And yes it was big but again it was just average and the meat not really spiced. I like 5 guys burgers better. Overall all it's good but I don't see why it is so talked about.
I'm so glad the Vortex is finally getting the recognition it deserves on national television (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives & Man VS. Food.)
First time I went, I ordered Cap'n Larry's Porkin Plate at Little Five Points. I found the honey barbeque sauce to be a little too sweet - didn't enjoy it. So I gave my leftover box to a homeless man sitting outside. But I did love the tots! And the skeleton entrance.
Then I had the Swiss and Mushroom burger at Midtown...again, with the tots. Fabulous.
I'd have to say burgers at the Vortex are a better deal than those at Flip - cuz the side items are included in the prices and the portions are bigger.
I made it to the Midtown location finally. It's basically the same vibe, but it felt like there were more students and suits here. The food was as good as the other location. I had the black & bleu burger with fries and it was great. The seasoning on the burger should have been more prominent, but that's not a big deal. The one thing that sucks about this location is the lack of parking. Otherwise, it's right on par with the other one.
3.5
Let me start by saying that i am a diehard fan of the burgers at the Vortex but I try to only go to the location on Moreland. Don't get me wrong, the food at the midtown location is good, very good, but it just doesn't feel like the Vortex that i know and love.
Part of this might just be the whole midtown atmosphere. Its wierd, the people that wonder in from the street are a very different crowd than those in little 5. They tend to be people that work around midtown, when you go in for lunch you often see more suits and dress shirts than tattoos and odd hair colors.
Like i said, the food is good, very good in fact but the atmosphere keeps me from giving this particular Vortex 5-stars. The beer selection is excellent as should be expected and the whisky selection is almost as good as the flagship Vortex. I really just can't get over how un-vortexy this place feels. Its much brighter and more open than the one in little 5, adn the bar is much less cluttered which i guess the people in midtown might like. It also gets pretty packed here late night but again the crowd tends to be a little different, its much more "midtown" for lack of a better term.
Anyway, its the Vortex and i'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it but if i have an option, i'll go over to moreland.
