Seriously, you haven't experienced the meaning behind the word "diversity" unless you've been here. The Drum Circle...amazing.
Locals tapping to the beat and addicting drumming that hypnotizes you and holds you in a trance... "I must watch" is what you're telling yourself... So many beautiful beings releasing energy with every sound and swaying, jumping, stomping... stress reliever, to the max.
I couldn't help but to get caught up here for a good 20 mins. I was watching in awe. All these cultures, dancing together, moving at the same pace, dancing their souls out...something I've never seen.
This is by far one of thee best places I've been to in Lost Angels.
It's very soothing, can be romantic at times, and you'll learn a thing or two about what coming together really means.

Wait, really? Do people go on yelp to research drum circles?
Incredulity and confusion aside, in the event that you are trying to decide whether to commit to attending this gathering of strangers who come together for a few hours on Sunday afternoons to make music with drums and empty Arrowhead water coolers: yes. It is likely to be one of the most fascinating groups of people you will ever encounter and one of the most beautiful music experiences of your life, especially as the sun is setting or, as another yelper mentioned, a storm is brewing. The energy of this event is undeniable. Whether you're standing uncomfortably outside the circle with your shoes still on or drumming your fingers to shreds on a djembe that you brought or that some crazy-eyed man in a poncho thrust into your lap, the experience will be memorable and slightly addictive.
But if you find yourself at the drum circle composing a yelp review of it in your head, be it positive or negative, you need to breathe the air a little deeper, man.

I used to come down to the drum circle during college to do my homework.
I always enjoy it and I wish I'd make a point to get down there more often.
I recommend it for locals or for tourists. It's something anyone can enjoy.
For me, it's therapeutic. Picture yourself on the beach, with crashing waves, loud drums, people dancing and shouting, and the sand between your toes.
The Venice Beach Drum Circle helped me to see some beauty in Lost Angeles.

I had only heard about the legend of the Venice Beach Drum Circle.
I never thought I would LOVE it this much.
Beautiful day, combined with great company and sexy drum music = a highly erotic experience for the senses.
The sweat, the free movement, the multicultural / multi-generational crowd, and the smiling faces were all I needed to elevate my spirit.
It was beautiful, exciting, and sensual.
You will enjoy it. Just step into the circle and give it a shot. You'll never forget it.

When the drums start, the natives get restless. I feel like I'm in a Val Lewton movie. If you live near by, which I do, these drums suck!!!
Noise pollution by hippies, what happened to caring about the environment?
Events like this remind me why i'm so lucky to live in california.
I would recommend it just for the experence. Your surrounded by locals, weirdos, tourist, pot smoking teens, and overall uniquie people...
Fun. I ended up dancing that night and really you can do whatever you want and its ok. I wouldn't recommend this for kids tho.

Oh man.....what fine memories.
I moved to LA in spring of 2000. I landed on Venice Beach by accident.
I came from the Midwest, where drum circles are about as common as pink flamingos.
So....Easter arrived shortly after I did, and I happened upon the drum circle at sunset on the beach, that day.
I threw caution to the wind, kicked off my shoes and danced in the sand, became one with the beat of the drums, lost in the magic of the moment.
I will never forget it.
Dylan's lyrics rang true to me from that day on:
"Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow."
If you march to the beat of a different drummer, this gathering might capture you, too.
LA is home now, and I hold Venice Beach forever dear in my heart.

The Mother Ship Has Landed.
If you have not been to this, you HAVE to go. This Sunday night drum circle has got to be the most accurate mix of Venice people ever. Having said that, people from all over the city come to play here and there are tons of tourists too.
There will be dancers in the middle, candles, incense, people selling and smoking drugs, people totally blasted on booze, kids, families, the god squad and tons and tons of drums.
The cross street to the beach where this happens is Brooks. Also, don't bring a hand drum since you won't be heard. This is a stick or mallet drum circle for sure.
My two cents, as a drummer, is that this place is the biggest mess because none of the drummers play together. EVER. As a beach and culture lover, this place is the best.
Don't half step. Bring a camera since there will be so many great photo opportunities.

Really good with a storm approaching in the winter. This is a fun place to remember what it's really all about.

One of the most eclectic bunch of people in the universe or maybe just the state. But when the sun sets, these people come together as one.
The drumming begins a few hours before sunset. Peruvian wooden boxes, plastic buckets, bongo drums and even percussion instruments sound off to the same palpitation. When the sky kisses the horizon orange and blue, the euphoria ensues! Dancers and drummers in all states of bliss--narcotic or otherwise--writhe to the palpitation like the early hippies of Haight. And as the sun slowly sinks itself in the abyss of the ocean, the ecstasy intensifies, and then...explodes.
I've never been here on Sunday. If not for this late trip, I would have never found this lively bunch. I've been to a few before, but never with such an eclectic bunch.
People in ties? Check. Cholos? Check. Kids? Check. Families? Check. Every shade of brown? Check. Check. Check.
What's that smell? I don't know, but it's going around.
I'll be back next Sunday after church.

You can't deny this decades-old wonder. Yeah, sure, Arthur Hull would dismiss it as just another "anarchy / thunder" drum circle, but it can really groove early on a good day, before the rhythm splinters into many ego factions. This is L.A.'s answer to SF's Hippy Hill- another must stop for those wanting to fully experience the California drum circle experience. Venice Beach Suites works well for out-of-towners.

Thank God for the Venice Beach drum circle. It has restored my faith in humanity and it reminds me of Austin, my hometown. If you're an idiot and don't like diverse communities, or having new cultural experiences, then I can guarantee you aren't going to like it here. Want to smoke a J? That's cool, because you'll probably look at lot less shady lighting up with your douchey Hollywood friends than the shirtless amputee who's nursing his Jameson.

Very neat. I am not a big fan of the drum circle scene, but this is undoubtedly impressive. The incredible variety of people involved is the very best part. Definitely worth checking out.

The circle will relax you back to reality in no time. GO HERE, but please leave the 'tude and ny closed minds behind. This is a place for all kinds of people to commune with the elements, dance, chat with friends...whatever.
