I really love this store. I know it's gotten mixed reviews on here but every time I've been there, I've come back very satisfied. Same goes for everyone I've sent there. The owner is awesome, and will work with your schedule to make sure that you're not unduly inconvenienced by the repairs you need to get. Case in point: I had to get my laptop fixed after spilling some water on it and he kindly scheduled it so that I only had to give up my laptop for just-about 10 hours!
I know there are complaints on here that the service isn't much to holler about, or that the products aren't very great, but I've been here countless times and I've always come back satisfied. It's a small store though so I guess you just have to be a little more pro-active about what you want/need.
One of the friends I sent there didn't need her laptop back urgently so she got hers back only after 3 days. When I had to get my keyboard fixed, it took forever for them to get the replacement keyboard in, but once they had it, it took a little less than 2 hours from drop-off to pick-up. The owner is really, really helpful (and knowledgeable), and will go over things in detail with you even if you're not getting anything. And he's not out to make a quick buck either; he's never recommended something overpriced to me at the expense of something equivalent that's cheaper.
The downside though is that yes, you do have to wait your turn for service, sometimes for up to 10 minutes, but the prices here are waaaay cheaper than the Mac store so I've got no complaints. -
Review from Pablo R.
For those techies in the know, this store has been in the area for a long, long time. It's a great resource for parts and accessories that are no longer sold in new computer stores. This location offers parts and accessory sales on the first floor and an internet cafe on the second floor. The sales people are pretty knowledgeable too. A couple of problems I have is one, the store is pretty disorganized so you have to know what you're looking for and be able to find out of a pile. Two, the prices of everything is the same as if it was new. Not cool, but if you're in need of a part that is obsolete, you'll probably find it here, hence the price.
Street parking is tough here. -

We walked into this store looking for a used computer monitor; nothing fancy, just a plain ol' monitor that works. What did we find? A couple of over-priced, relatively snazzy monitors. Did we buy them? No.
I suppose, it would have helped if the person managing the store had bothered to help us or at least ask us what we were looking for. He ignored us from the minute we walked in and despite standing in front of his desk, we received no acknowledgement from him.
The store definitely had some cool (and reasonably priced) items such as VHS tapes, CPU frames and an assortment of random nuts and bolts. They also have lots of extension cords, chargers, computer parts and mobile accessories, however they were all on the pricey side (read: not worth it!)
I would recommend that you check this store out just for its "antique" electronic (and buy your electronic items elsewhere)

This place is CRAP.
We dropped off my hard drive here from my laptop to get ours files out of it. We dropped it off last Sat May 7th, and the people promised it would be ready in 5-7 days and they would give us a call.
6 days pass and no call, but it's still within the 5-7 days, but we decided to call them anyway to get the status of what's going on.
The person who answers the phone is rude from the get-go. They put us on hold for 5 minutes, and when we finally get to talk to someone they tell us the "computer guy isn't in yet, he should be in at two and he will give you a call then." No call at all the rest of the day!
Saturday rolls around. It has now been a WEEK. We call them and again, a rude person answers and puts on hold TWICE. Each for about 5-10 minutes at a time. The bitch tells us the same thing as yesterday, but we receive no call at all the rest of the day.
If you are going to have a business in which you offer to do services to our computers/hard drives, then do your fu*king job.
I would tell everyone I knew and even strangers to avoid this crap place. I hope they go out of business. That would be AWESOME. -

If you're dying to pay $75.00 for a computer widget that you can buy on-line for $2.89, this is your store. All the while the cocky attitude is a bonus. Dare ask a question, that doesn't imply that you are loaded and ready to pay whatever they want, expect to be treated like a fool that shouldn't be in the store. It pays to be central to a major university in a Computer savvy town, I suppose, but the nerve it must take, as the world gets more access to reasonable pricing, to keep up this charade? amazing!

This place is pretty bizarre. It's pretty typical for a used computer store, only worse than most. If you want accounting software for Windows 95 or to learn how to be a Windows 3.1 power user, the book selection is for you. If you want a copy of Mandrake Linux 8.1 you can probably get it here.
All of the used computer equipment is really crappy and ridiculously marked up. I feel terrible for the old people who actually buy things here and get their computers serviced here.
The one redeeming feature of the place is there's an "Internet Cafe" upstairs. You can use the Internet for I think ten cents a minute. You can also print stuff out here (I forget what the rate is for that). The printers are decent, the computers are mostly Pentium era computers running Windows XP with lots of pirated software. Probably this is not a good place to use a computer to check on your bank account or something like that. That said, this Internet "cafe" has been a lifesaver for me a couple of times.
I came here once to buy a mouse. They had mostly PS/2 mouses (read: old, won't work on a newer computer) and only a couple of USB mice. I can't remember how much I paid for the mouse but as I recall it was pretty steep (something like $8 for a generic Microsoft ball-mouse). Also, they had about fifty used IBM keyboards labeled as belonging to San Quentin State Prison.
For at least the past year they've had a TiBook displayed in the window[1]. They love that thing, they're never gonna sell it.

Despite all the haters on here, I had a great experience. I've been lagging on getting a replacement battery for my 4 year-old G4 and after too much searching online for "the best deal" and not even knowing the batteries were a reputable brand or even reputable for generic, I decided to walk in to these guys. I spoke to Bill and he was extremely helpful and stood behind their generic brand for batteries. He assured me no one has ever come back with a problem with the product but promised a 6-month warranty. He also gave me lots of unsolicited advice about how to keep my G4 happy 'til its very last day. Which in this economy, you bet your bottom's dolla that's what I'm gonna do.
1 star docked cuz I probably could've gotten it a bit cheaper "somewhere" --- but who knows where.
Peace out. -

Just do yourself and your day a favor and skip it.
I've been in there twice for unrelated reasons. Once, to buy an Airport for my Itunes and once for a repair.
The Airport never worked. Not once. The guy who sold it to me made it really clear from the moment I finally asked him to help me after being ignored (from 3 feet away, not another customer in sight) that he hated answering questions, and my last couple of attempts at extracting information were met with some combination of grunts and shrugs.
The "repair" cost me about $135, which is reasonable except that it didn't fix the original problem, or even have anything to do with it, and again, a style of customer service that makes you feel like you have no right getting between them and your money in the first place.
Really. Go somewhere that *wants* customers. -
Review from Allison L.

I wouldn't say the customer service is great (it's the same stoned-out, clueless, vague shit you see throughout most of B'kly), but they've saved my ass several times at top dollar. Fuck me for being so hooked on my goddamned laptop.
* EDIT 3-1-07 *
So my laptop is working again. Cue Erasure's "Reunion" or whatever gayed-out, happy song you want to sing.
Now the bad stuff: Used Computer Store, you pissed me off. And I'm telling the Yelp world on you.
See, the hard drive died. And the Used Computer Store guys said: "Sure, bring it in, we'll see what we can get of it." Meaning my Firefox and my LimeWire with all my porn -- I mean, gospel.
Anyway. I pick it up, bring it home, eagerly turn it on. I've missed "Jack the Janitor", which if you haven't checked it out, you must, it's one of Hustler Barely Legal's best.
And my computer CHIMES as it turns on. You know THAT chime. That lame-ass da-da-da startup noise that, thank the lord for freelancing, I don't have to hear while sitting in a sea of cubicles. And I'm like -- huh? I bitch-slapped my computer out of EVER making that noise!
Used Computer Store, you gave me back a Stepford computer. No porn, Office Space noises, this lame-ass wallpaper, some picture of pretty flowers and mountains and shit. I mean, what the hell?
One pissed-off phone call later, I found out my hard drive was too hosed to pull any data off. Okay, that's fine. My fault for twirling around in my rolly chair, catching my foot on the AC adapter, the thing falling to the hardwood floor -- the thunk, the thunk, I can't take it.
So it was my fault. And I couldn't have 100 percent counted on ANYTHING being recovered.
But Used Computer Store, you got my hopes up. And then you dashed them. Worst of all, you didn't call me to let me know this was going on. I did get a phone call from the manager to smooth things over after the aforementioned pissed-off phone call from me. He hinted that they might take something off the $120 pricetag.
While I wait for him to call back, I'm going to re-download Jack the Janitor. I have a feeling I'll be getting more satisfaction out of him than from the Used Computer Store. Sorry, guys, but currently you suck ass in my book. -

I'm surprised at all the negativity from the previous reviews. These guys were great ! I've bought three different computer systems from them over the years and they've always been helpful. I travel all the way from SF just to buy from them. In fact, I'm going back again this week to get a new laptop.
Sure, they won't wait on you hand and foot all the time. (I guess some of these other people are peeved about that).
But hey, talk to them about what you need and they always listen and help out. And, it beats buying some sketchy looking system from a stranger off Craigslist, (as they even offer warranties on used systems they sell). 5 out of 5 stars !!! -

Went to The "Used" Computer Store today to look for a couple things, My first time visiting this place as well.
When I found the place, It looked nice walking into, but when I started browsing around I saw their prices on things. They were outrageous.
After seeing their prices I was wondering if I should even ask for the parts I needed. Well, I did.
Me: "Do you have airport cards for the older Macs?"
Rip Off: "Uhhh umm hmm yeah.... we do, the price is $120"
Me: "Really... I see them all over eBay and Craigs List for under $40"
Rip Off: "Then there is your best bet - most likely then."
Go take a look on eBay right now. There are airport cards all over the site for under $40. What kinda crap is that?
Me: "How about laptop ram? PC100"
Rip Off: "Yeah for 512mb the price is $89.95"
They have to be kidding me. Cheap old memory cost nothing. Except when you go here.
The last thing I needed was a CD ROM drive.
Me: "Well how much is a CD drive gonna be?"
Rip Off: "$69.95"
Basically I would recommend not going to this place. Their prices are so high. Almost 3 times over. I know how much this stuff costs, and how hard it is to get, and there are no reasons for these high prices. I honestly feel bad for the older people who take there computer here for repair and get ripped off. I ended up leaving and buying nothing. I suggest you do the same ! -

There is a dashing blond that works in this store, and not only did he help my friend get a quality keyboard for a decent price, but he also patiently & intelligently helped a little old man that was in front of us in line with his computer confusions.
-1 star for the used printers that are way overpriced. Also, for the fact that they charge for their internet cafe. Oh ok, right. I'll pay YOU for internet when I could walk less than a block and get it for free. That makes loads of sense.Listed in: The EB

The store is rather dumpy and cluttered, it's clear that the people running it are bums. Their selection is greatly lacking and the guy usually working there is not real friendly.
Their return policy is an absolute joke, aimed at shafting customers. More of a scam than a store. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. -

Yeah so not feeling this place. I had a paper jam in my computer... please tell me why it took them a day and a half to fix it. Yes yes, I understand that there were people in front of me, but it's a paper jam people. Also.... I feel 20 dollars is a bit much for a paper jam, but I didn't have time to argue.
People were kinda rude too. -

This place is pretty good. The customer service isn't fantastic, but overall I like it. I'm an engineer, and I often need to get some obscure part of a computer. This is the only place in Berkeley that will root through their old parts for me. They found an Intel IWI4965 wireless chip for me, which is almost impossible to find as it was sold as part of a set of Gateway motherboards. They gave it to me for $15.
I've been there many times since, and I can generally get what I want for a hell of a lot cheaper than other stores around, like Eid's.
If it weren't for the shoddy customer service that I've witnessed other people getting, I would give 5 stars. The clerks appear to treat the technical illiterate a lot worse than technicians. -

This place is great! I've gotten much-needed odd's and end's for my computer (like: a wireless card, an a/c cord for half of my battery charger). All at good prices too, I don't know why every else's reviews are so bad!
True- the store is, without a doubt, aesthetically UNpleasing.
BUT! While my mom was visiting me for a week from FL, she went to this store and they spent probably 2-3 hours with her teaching her how to use her computer! Which is incredible! Thank you, thank you, nice people who work there! -

These guys are maddeningly horrible. The service is awful, the machines don't work properly half the time, and they *CHARGE* you *$1 per minute* if you need them to fix one of *their* machine's problems! They suck big time, avoid them at all costs. -

i about bawled like a baby when my new-to-me computer wasn't sending a picture to my brand-new-&-awesome monitor.
i pushed all the buttons, checked the connections, then called for help.
my uber nerd was on the case stat, & pulled out the video card with surgeon-like precision. after carefully depositing the poor thing into a tiny shopping bag, i said, "Now what?"
he said, "Best Buy."
i said, "Hell no, let's head to Shattuck."
just weave between to the homeless people leaning in the doorways & you'll find The Used Computer Store in what used to be a music store. they didn't do much in the ways of sprucing the place up, just set up dozens of refurbished Macs & what-not & called it a store.
no matter, i spotted the video cards in the glass case & pulled mine out & looked interested.
the clerks, however, did not.
they saw me walk in & eye them patiently, but attended to 2 other customers before i stepped in front of the guy so he couldn't disappear into the doorway marked "Employees Only."
i told the guy my problem, & he doubtfully eyed my video card & recommended another one of comparable or better quality. he doubted that the card was the issue, but i could get it, try it, & return it if it didn't work out. i took it, might as well try it, right? he bolted for his lunch break as soon as i signed the receipt.
we head home, pop the thing, & my monitor glows with life back at me.
i commence with squeals of delight.
i suppose the mid-range rating comes from the poor service, but it turned out to be the video card, so i am overall pleased with the experience. -

The internet "cafe" is excellent and fairly priced, for that alone I am very glad this place exists. I carry a plain cell phone with no text plan and being able to walk in, do my internet research, print a few pages and hit the road again has helped me big time on one occasion. No coffee shop distractions, just a row of computers back to back and they leave you alone to do your thing.
I buy my geek toys online like any self respecting IT pro, but more power to them if they can survive. The address gives them extra mojo, so even with all the complaints they can still overcome. -

This place is great. I've bought RAM, a 24" monitor, keyboards, etc. It's probably where I'll go to buy my next laptop once my Macbook core duo is obsolete. I've also sold them surplus monitors and keyboards.
I have trouble understanding the reviews that criticize the price difference between this store and craigslist/ebay. Hello.... there is always a price difference between online and a storefront, it's called : rent, maintaining stock, customer service and repairs/returns. I bought memory here that I needed the same day, it was 20% more than at http://dealram.com. But I didn't have to pay for overnight delivery and hope that it arrived on time. And if it hadn't worked they would have replaced it on the spot.
That's why you go to a store. The fact that they sell used and refurbished machines is just an added plus: one less toxic addition to the landfill. -

So I managed to score a broken ergonomic mouse from work. The cable was loose and would work every now and then. I took it a part and found that the cable was just held in with a 5 port plug that I could remove. I decided to head over to the Used Computer Store to see if thye had any replacement cords or at least buy a used one. I looked for about 10 min, found nothing. I grabbed a used mouse that was dirty as hell and sticky. Went up to the front desk and wait patiently for 10 min because of another customer in front of me. When it was my turn, I told the dude my situation and asked him if I could open the mouse to see if it had the same cord so I could replace it. He said the mouse wasn't meant to be opened. I said that it was because it had a screw. Then said I couldn't open it. I told him that's fine I guess I won't be buying it then. and walked out. I ended up going to radioshack and buying some shrink tube and just fixing the cord myself.
The mouse was clearly a POS that wasn't worth much (they had new ones on the wall for $10 and a huge box of used ones). Mice are easy to take apart and put back together. It was sticky and gross so I don't know why anyone would buy it to begin with.
This place doesn't know how to run a business. If I can i'll go out of my way not to go there.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I would rather not even give this ONE star, but I am posting here to warn anyone else who makes the same mistake I did: Do NOT DO NOT take your computer in here for repair. They will have had my computer for THREE MONTHS TO THE DAY on the 23rd. Meanwhile, they are treating me like a clingy ex-girlfriend. Once, I called twice in the same day because I was sick of people telling me they'd call me back and not calling me back, and the person who answered the phone told me I should keep calling until I reached Bill, who is seemingly the only person who actually works on the computers, and of course no one would call back.
I'm actually screwed right now, because they have my laptop AND my $270 dollars, and I'm having trouble making it in for my weekly "Is it ready yet, since you said it would be ready on Tuesday at the latest THREE WEEKS AGO?" visits since I'm back in school for the fall semester and badly badly need my computer back. Do not, do not, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. -

HOLY CRAP!!! HOW DO YOU SEND A MACBOOK REPAIR HOME WITH NO SCREWS IN IT??
I am only giving them a star for the speed of the repair. Their prices were insane, their service was sub par AND like i said, i sent it in for a keyboard repair on my macbook and it came with a new keyboard, but no f-ing screws to hold it on! Looks like I'm going back!
For a $200 repair, you would think they would have replaced the screws! -

I am not sure why I thought these guys would know what they are doing, but they don't. I tried to use their hard drive recovery service, and it was like being trapped in a Monty Python sketch. Their service was bad, it took them forever to get back to me, and their conclusion was entirely wrong. Impressive combination of arrogance and ignorence.

Crap Crap Crap.
It's okay if you need a part last minute, but the used computers they sell cost as much or more than better, new equipment!
I'm all for cutting down on e-waste, but this should be run as a not-for-profit in a warehouse out of downtown where they can sell things for what they are worth.
It's sad, because they prey on poor people who don't know the market or the quality of the equipment. -

Here is the deal.
Pro:
If your older PC/mac needs a part that you wont find in the retail stores - they will more than likely have it here.
Con:
They are insanely overpriced. If you can wait, order off of ebay/craigslist/whatever.
------
Ive been in the store a few times. Bought a Win XP license from them in a pinch because I needed XP and not Vista. I paid $50-60 more than it would have been on ebay.
I just called to quote a SVGA cable. I figured id save a few bucks from going to radio shack - seems simple enough, esp given they have older type monitors and such. I was told they have 15ft and 25ft. Huh? No 6 ft? Who has 15ft of monitor cable for their computer. I was then told $25 for the 15ft one. I stopped listening at that point. You can get the same 15ft (if i wanted one) for about 8 bucks delivered from monoprice and $25 is more than twice the cost of a 6ft cable at radio shack.
Id go here only in an absolute emergency for an old computer only - and id be grumbling the whole time. -

My HS senior came home from school with six hours of homework only to discover that his computer charger had died. He was panicked. I called Best Buy in Emeryville where we buy everything. Let it ring 20 times. Let it ring 20 times again. Was there really nobody working there who could pick up the phone in the sales department for a customer? While on hold I started searching for alternatives. SO GLAD to find this store and discover it was open until 8 pm. Read the most recent review which was great, but a little concerned about the lesser reviews.
I called anyways and chatted with Jeff. He put me on hold to check the inventory to make sure he had the correct charger before I drove over from Oakland. The price was appropriate. When I arrived he grabbed the charger, ensured that it worked properly, and reminded me that there was a 90 day warranty.
Drove home, son plugged new charger into old laptop and he has been happily working on his school project for hours.
I completely recommend this store! The guys working there were nice, helpful, and certainly deserve our business.
Prices seemed fair. The charger was $59 for my son's HP. My charger for my Dell recently died and Dell charged us $150!! -

I thought this place was going to be good at first. But upon further experience, they have poor customer service. They don't meet the deadlines that they give you and don't call to inform you that your computer isn't ready when they said it would be. They had my computer for over two weeks and the repair cost half as much as when I bought it from them six months prior. As a student, it's hard to get by without a computer and you think they would try to cater to that market based off of their location near campus. I highly DON'T recommend this place.

I thought that I was becoming really jaded about how pompous and pretentious people could be about wine. Now that I have been putting together a home studio, and having to deal with the employees at computer stores, I am finding that computer dorks are EQUALLY as pompous and pretentious! Every call, every visit, just ends as frustrating as possible. Like today for instance, I found 3 things that I needed for my Mac. Couldn't find the 4th thing, so I talked to the clerk.... First he told me he didn't have ANY. (DVD drives) then he realized that there was actually one SITTING on the shelf behind him! So he went, "umm...I have some back here..." And led me to a pile of windows driven DVD players, and said, "I think theres a few in there." AND WALKS AWAY!!! What the HELL?!?!?! I looked at a few of the boxes, and they weren't even LABELED! Nice customer service! Unfortunately for you, I wasn't just buying an $80 drive. All totaled, you just lost you store closer to $500 just by being too lazy to do your job. Clearly you are worth what they are paying you! NEVER going there again!

DO NOT TAKE YOUR COMPUTER HERE TO BE REPAIRED. The customer service is horrible and the technician work subpar. Customer service example: They take forever to fix and they have this messed up queue system. Also, they don't get back to you when they say they will. In my case, they replaced the keyboard. But, did not QA/check to make sure all the keys were working. So, when I got it home, keys were sticking. Back again. This time, the specialist was out to lunch - the front desk person said they sometimes take 2 hour lunches. I have a question. If you are servicing computers, why wouldn't you keep staff there at all times? Here's an idea - rotate lunch schedules!! What is this Spain with the 2 hour lunches? Anyway, that burned another day and they replaced the key board. When I got it back the second time - the battery was dead. At first, they refused to look at it until my husband offered a solution that would prove right/wrong. Turns out, it was dead. So, that was not their fault, but the fact that they were at first unwilling to take a look at the computer. It was a huge coincidence that after they opened the computer 2x my battery would die, but we couldn't prove negligence.
Overall, I think these people are smug and don't really care about the customer. It's not well run and it's freaky inside. I wouldn't go again - it's not even set-up to have a winning experience for the customer.
