When I lived in midtown I used to come here probably once or twice a week to get a couple slices. I felt like it was the best pizza in the area. They have a wide variety of slices you can choose from and they definitely do not skimp on the toppings. My favorite was the chicken cutlet and I also liked the pepperoni and ground beef.
The pizza portion of the restaurant used to be a lot smaller but they expanded and there is a decent amount of seating inside. Delivery is good but better to get the pizza there if you can.
I read some good reviews about this place, so I stopped by for a pepperoni calzone. The service was great, and the guys behind the counter were very friendly, but the ricotta cheese in the calzone was still partially cold and tasted pretty gross. The pizza looked delicious, so maybe I should have played it safe and gotten that!
I picked up a slice of white pizza here the other day for dinner. It was ok. Just ok. Not ultimate. For like $4 it should have gotten me a lot closer to one of those "pizza orgasms" Sarah B. spoke of.
However, they are only 2 blocks from where I am currently so that's a definite plus. They had quite a few varieties to choose from if you just wanted a slice. Everything looked a lot more appealing than the "Best Pizza on 1st" on the other side of 57th. Also, their takeout menu has some important advice printed in bold on the back -- STAY HEALTHY! Eat Right and Exercise. Thanks, Ultimate Pizza!! I'll make sure to jog home next time so the ricotta doesn't go straight to my hips.
This place really is the best in the neighborhood. I love their ziti slice and just about everything else. The guys that work there are all great. The best secret about Ultimate is their salads. They're hidden at the end of the counter, but they're great to bring to the beach or to grab when you just don't feel like preparing a salad yourself.
Ultimate Pasta upstairs is small and quiet and has the freshest and most delicious meals! I take all of my friends here and they thank me many times. The fact that it's BYOB is even better.
I grew up in this neighborhood and watched the original Corner Store get cut in half and Ultimate Pizza was born....that was over 20 years ago. Their pizza has been satisfying the neighborhood ever since. These guys not only have great pizza, they are great people. Were it not for the help and support of the owners of this store, I would not have been able to open my pizza joint in California.
Thank you Benny, Lutfi, Tony, Junior, and the whole crew at Ultimate. You guys rock!!!! The new place looks awesome.
You can obviously find a slice pretty much on every other block in NY and for the most part, you'll get something that tastes similar to a slice you'd get anywhere else. There's only so much you can do to a slice, you know?
Still, some do it better and Ultimate's definitely one of them. If you're close enough to Ultimate (57th and 1st Ave.), you shouldn't settle for some other pizza place in that area. It's a tiny hole in the wall pizza place that knows what's up. The chicken cutlet slices are my favorite.
The pizza tastes good but it expensive. What worries me is the restaurant Inspection report. With a pizza as this expensive they should take care of the establishment.
First I want to point out the Brian's pictures are really old and not accurate anymore.
The place has really great Pizza. Upstairs the owner has a little pasta place with BOD (Bring your own drink) and you can order the Pizza from downstairs. Recently I had two slices of pizza with mashroom and peperoni. I am not sure how they did it but I am still thinking about it.
I heard they are planning to be open 24/7 and to have breakfast and coffee in the morning.
Hmm, I don't know what to say. Good pizza? Sure. Lots of different slices from which to choose, so whatever your whim may be, they'll surely be able to sate you.
I guess I'm just not "New York" enough. (Which of course makes perfect sense since I'm not from there). It's just that with all the hype that New Yorkers give their beloved pizza, I was expecting some kind of life-altering experience. Sorry, didn't happen. I've had crust with more character elsewhere, I've had better cheese on other pies, and sauce with more kick as well. Never all at once, though.
I've yet to find my personal ultimate pizza-- a slightly charred bottom of the pie so you can "taste" the oven with each crispy bite; some bubbling of the crust and cheese on the top for a delightful chewiness; fresh, sweet, sliced mozzarella; a sauce that offers a spicy-herbal taste to compliment the ripe tomatoes; and creative toppings instead of the usual hum-drum stuff that every shop has. If anyone can recommend a source for my pizza nirvana, I would be eternally grateful.
But again... Ultimate Pizza on the UES? I was in the mood for a slice of pizza and it hit the spot, but ultimately didn't put me into the throes of ecstasy like so many New Yorkers think their pizza accomplishes.
You hate pizza that's delivered that is soggy, burnt, too much sauce, not enough cheese, cold or reheated, right? This will NEVER happen from Ultimate Pizza. Never. I have probably ordered delivery 60 times from them in a year and it's the most reliable place in the city for pizza. Not only are they reliable, the pizza is flat-out delicious: a true NYC slice. Large, lots of cheese, thin crust and piping hot. Toppings are always fresh, too.
They recently renovated their space as well so it's a delight to stop by and get a slice right out of the oven. These guys know what they are doing and are always so friendly when you call.
I hope I never move and they never move, simply because it would be a sad day when I could no longer order from Ultimate.
This is a great slab especially for NYC. it aint no La Scala http://www.yelp.com/bi... nor is it the "crack" slices you get downtown at Joe's http://www.yelp.com/bi... but they do do a good job.
FYI: Do not order a chicken parm hero here!!!! They use chunky pieces of chicken instead of a nice breaded fillet. Stick to the slabs.
I had multiple pizza orgasms in NY. My last one happened here shortly before before I boarded my plane and bid a tearful farewell to the city of good pizza. I liked the minimal sauce, the perfect amount of cheese, the ground beef and that it was all located a short walk from a small park on the river. But what I really loved was the crispy crust. And watching some crazy lady with 50 suitcases and a body bag trying to hail a cab out front. And then walking to some crappy street fair for a kabob and a funnel cake. Burp! I love NY!
Their pizza is consistently good, delivered hot, reasonably priced. I don't recommend getting mushrooms (they're from a can, not fresh), but they have great pepperoni and their bacon rocks.
And like others have said, the guys working there are friendly too.
Best pizza I've eaten in the neighborhood. Ultimate Pizza has revived my love for 'za.
Much better thin crust nearby. This is the place if you like traditional NY-style slice pizza
Delicious pizza, with great delivery service. I usually order from Vinci's, which is also in the neighborhood. But I recently discovered Ultimate Pizza and I LOVE it! On the way home from work, I'll pop in and place an order for delivery. By the time I get home and pour myself a drink, the pizza has arrived, too.
So I had a slice and it was above average, but above average is standard for slices in NYC. Lots of toppings. Krunch may offer a better slice in midtown east but Angelo's and Patsy's look to be the better alternatives for pies.
The pizza shop has recently been renovated so it looks great and clean inside for a local pizza place. And while the pizza is good, there is nothing besides the really thin crusts that makes it stand out from most any other local pizza. It's a good for neighborhood pizza but there plenty of other choices on 1st avenue that are just as good.
Bout damn time someone seasoned and sauteed vegetables before putting them on a pizza. My vegetarian palate salutes you, Ultimate in Pizza.
For my neighborhood, maybe for all of the pizza places I've tried this one is supreme. You can grab a slice at the whole in the wall take out counter or have it delivered to your doorstep in about a half hour (the method I prefer). $14.50 for a small pizza (6 huge slices). The best part, the really layer on the toppings, when you order pepperoni, you get serious pepperoni. The meatball pizza is pretty damn good too.
Well, this is a really sad one for me. Why is it sad? We ordered some pizza for a birthday party, Sicilian to be exact. Upon taking a bite, I discovered that they used extremely fresh and tasty cheese and the sauce was also very good. The sauce was more sweet than bitter and have a nice thin consistency. The bread was another story, however. I'm hoping it was just a botch and would be willing to amend the 2 star rating, but the bread was just wrong. It was as if it was too dense. Biting into the pizza took more effort than it should have, perhaps it didn't rise properly while in the oven. Either way, it was unacceptable to serve it to a customer that way. Again, maybe a fluke, I would be willing to try it again based on the sauce and cheese, two out of three ain't bad...or is it?
This is what pizza should taste like!!!
Ultimate is a cut above the masses of Rays. It is honestly great pizza in a hidden downstairs hole in the wall in Sutton place. I don't know if its worth a trip to this random area but if you are anywhere in a 5 block radius do yourself a favor and grab a slice, you wont be disappointed!
Phenomenal food. Hard to find good pizza in midtown but this place definitely makes up for it. Either snag a slice downstairs or head upstairs to the small restaurant for a pie or some decent pasta dishes.
This is a hidden gem in Sutton Place. Thin crust pizza, fabulous eggplant rollatini, ceasar salad, BYOB. The neighborhood likes to keep this a secret.
