This place is seriously awesome. Only giving it 4 stars because I don't looove the coffee, but it is drinkable.

The people working there are super nice -- I don't understand the meticulous and detailed complaining about the service and the menu, and the "flies" or whatever. Chill out, everyone -- it is in a park. If you want a sandwich that is not on the menu or trail mix then bring it from home.

As most have had to concede, the lavender cookie is so freaking amazing and the apply pie is really good too!  Try it, love it.

It's official! My boyfriend is trying to turn me into a friggin hippie!

I knew he seemed a bit too good to be true this whole time, but alas, his cover was blown yesterday when he suggested having, oh god, it's hard to even type this, but... "an avocado and sprout sandwich for lunch" What the hell?!?!?

You see, he kidnapped me and told me we were going to this neat little place in Griffith Park. Cool, I thought. I don't know of any neat little place in Griffith Park, so this sounds fun. As we shot down Los Feliz Blvd and made a right into the GP, I started to see, hikers (ewwh, exercise?!!?) and people walking (in LA?!?!?!) and sure enough as we neared this place it was nature land with granola peeps abound. Ugh!

"Okay, Stephy. Get it together here. Maybe it won't be so bad. Oooh and they have pie, okay, I can do this. I will eat said avocado and sprout crapwich and then I will have cherry pie. I can definitely do this if there is a pie payoff in my future" is what I chanted to myself as we stood in line looking at a menu with but one meat option that was a pastry wrapped hot dog (um, ewhh). As we walked up to order, I asked what I always ask when it comes to desserts: "Is there any cinnamon in this?" And of course, as all master plans are fouled up by stupid reality, I was ever so nicely informed that the cherry pie does indeed have cinnamon in it, so no go for me, since I am VERY allergic. Why Lord, why?!

But then...

Oh yes, then...

It happened.

The whole reason for this torturous venture into temporary vegetarianism and back cha*chinged and paid off when I turned around to find the one and only, hotter than hell, holy crap it's the man on my ultimate do-me-now list.... drum roll please... RYAN GOSLING.

There is a god!!

Man oh man, as I sat there eating the avocado and sprout sandwich all I tasted was sweet sexy "So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What's it look like? If it's with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out..." Notebook-esque bliss as I tried not to drool too obviously in front of the BF as I gazed at Ryan wishing there was a sudden downpour!

So see, maybe there is a reason for eating healthy after all :)

So I went here today for the first time, and it's a really nice little place. The prices are fairly decent and I would recommend the avocado sandwhich with two lavender cookies. YUM!

Basically if your looking for a nice brunch and your looking for something quick and good this is the place to go. They have nice little benches and there are lots of friendly people around, I'll definitely stop by here another time. Keep in mind though it's mostly vegan food, but def delicious pastries :)

I live SOOOO close, wish I didn't.

Adorable in an "oh so self consciously" anti hip hipster way.  Veggie and Vegan food served up by retro 70s looking staff who smoke cigarettes on the side while on break.  Heck, I'm not even complaining about that.  The lavender shortbread cookies are THE best cookie in town and the coffee is always good.  I just wish there were more hot menu items and the prices were a wee bit lower so I could go there every day.

The place is cute, it makes you feel like you're not in LA, so relaxing, i had the multigrain waffles delicious and my friend bought the lavender cookies and i really liked them, lavender in a cookie is a very good idea Trails Cafe!!, the prices are good, my only complaint is that it's cash only and i didn't have enough for my second cup of coffee hahahah, i already made a mental note to bring more next time, definitively going back  :)

Came here after a meal in Thai town.  Had a Lavander Shortbread cookie and a cup of americano.

The Lavander shortbread cookie was soft in the center but crispy on the outside (exactly the way I like my cookies). The lavander flavor was very subtle and added an extra depth to the cookies that your typical cookie would not possess.  It was an excellent cookie.

The americano was pretty good. Strong, and dark just the way I like.

The Trails is an excellent place to come and sit outside enjoy a well crafted baked good and a sip of strong coffee.

Wanting to go for awhile. Glad I finally did!

Ordered everything to go. Fast service. Delicious vegan chili (though the blue cornbread was too dry). The avocado and bean sprout sandwich was very good -- and I don't even like bean sprouts. Glad I took the food to go. Ate my mini peach & blueberry pie with ice cream from home. Hit the spot.

Next time I'll bond with nature and eat there. Nice outdoor seating areas. Free wi-fi!

I had a very good, if overpriced, artisan grilled cheese here and enjoyed hipster-fever-people watching.  They have a bathroom, which is a plus, when you are hiking around Griffith Park. Love the big outdoor tables and woodsy atmosphere, but it's self-consciously hip and artisan, which I am a bit partial too, even though I purport to snub that hipster artisan baked goods 'n' 'wichs.  It's too expensive and has a limited menu.  But what they do, they do good.  Like Tom when he does Katie; he probably does her good, which is why she's his robot slave!

After dragging my butt 15 miles (6 which are up hill)- I'm always desperate for a treat and most importantly an opportunity to hop off my bike and pretend I don't have to get back on it.

Trails- I will eat you one day.  I love this cabin in the mist of trees, mountains, cyclist, runners, hikers, loungers, birthday party folks, wedding folks, grumpy folks, hot guys, pretty girls, thirsty dogs, vegan strawberry-rhubarb pie, vegan mushroom- cashew pie, vegan cranberry-apple tart, lavender sugar cookies and delicious soy lattes.... or refreshing ice teas, lemonades...

Trails is casual- and the employees aren't going to go out of their way to provide top notch- super friendly service.  It's more of a bohemian vibe in a natural environment (with speakers coming out of trees gently playing Elliott Smith) -  it's up to you to figure out if you like it.  You can stay and enjoy the breeze or scram!

Really cute spot for a snack and respite after a hike. It's especially nice after doing nothing. It's not very far into Griffith Park so you could really just swing by if you're driving/biking/running/walking down Los Feliz. Felt like I was having a nice outdoor picnic. Had the tasty avocado sandwich -- starting scraping the bacon bits off but double checked the menu only to see that they were SOY bacon bits, whee. Avocado sandwich was about $6 which I can handle nowadays. Could do without the flutey, spa music that they somehow manage to pipe in, but overall awesome little spot.

This place is an anomaly in Los Angeles. After you try the Avocado sandwich, you'll want one every day. And the apple pie? Oh my. The fantastic culinary treats are only surpassed by the patio which is shaded by live Oaks and California Redwoods.

Just watch out for the yellowjackets.

This place is a local slice of heaven.

Witness:  delicious pastries, soothing music, baby squirrels?

The coffee is organic.  The wi-fi is free.  What more, people?  What more could you ever want?  The only request I could make is to stay open a little later in the summer months.

I love you, Trails.  You are perfect.

If I lived in the area I would certainly be here weekly if not daily. What an amazing find! My BFF's took me here during my short visit to Los Feliz and it may have been my favorite place we ate.

Super veggie friendly, all homemade goods, beautiful setting
(right inside Griffith Park, about a quarter of a mile past the entrance), totally cheap, helpful & down to earth staff, great soundtrack lightly piped outdoors (elliott smith & cat stevens!)... honest to goodness perfection.

We stopped by on my way out of town and it really was the perfect way to close out a great weekend. I went simple with one of their lemon poppy seed scones, one of their famous lavender vanilla cookies (shaped like a bunny for easter!), and a house made iced tea. Everything was super yummy and I think it was one of if not the best scones I've ever had... crunchy on the outside and warm and soft in the middle.
Man, thinking about it makes me ready to go back.. now!

A little shack in griffith park. I stopped here for some food and tried their avocado sandwich and hot dog. The avocado sandwich is very tasty. There's big chunks of avocado on whole wheat bread, with sprouts, tomatoes, cheese, and soy bacon bits (tasted just like the real deal).

I give Trails 4 stars for the food, but five stars for the ambience. Nothing like the beautiful outdoors and good eating!

As surprising as it sounds, my sophisticated olfactory senses had not yet located THE TRAILS.  The horror, further elevated, was that I got lost coming here.  My pesky navigation didn't know Fern Dell Dr.  How's that??  Why apparently, it doesn't care about National Parks and tiny little outdoor cafes within.  So I went old school, supplicating a biker for directions.  I could barely remember how to ask for a turn-by-turn instruction from him, as my Navigation has left me a suckling babe at her whim.  However, I managed, and found my way inside Griffith Park (turn right at the Concrete Bear!  Okay!  Straight ahead!  That's not so hard!  It's on the left!  My God!  That Biker was a GENIUS!!)

The Menu was, as previously stated, minimal.  The vegan options were delectable-sounding and had me delerious as I asked for the chili and blue cornbread.  It only took a few minutes before I was noshing on a super chunky, vegetable filled chili with a perfect hint of spice.  The cornbread was incredible as the sweetness was just right and it highlighted the maybe-cayenne of the chilli.

Though the poriton looked a bit small, it was intensely filling and I walked away from the forrest abode feeling incredibly fulfilled.  My recommendation is to eat here, and experience a vegan chilli that thrills.  Also, when your Navigation snubbs a national park, just asks a biker, or turn right at the Concrete Bear.

As a neighborhood cafe, I like Trails because it is convenient. I have been here dozens of times because I can stop in at this dog-friendly cafe with my pups while we are out and about. So, I guess I am a fan but...because their food is fresh, they often run out or have part of a menu item and they don't discount the order even if you don't get the whole thing; nope, not even an offer.

So, I would agree with a couple of reviewers that the people who work here often act like they are doing you a favor. Often, they'll dole out your order over ten minutes (a drink, a piece of pie, another drink, an entree, a spoon, etc.). Yes, I've experienced a little attitude when they forget something. But the food is yummy, the beverages delicious, and the desserts divine. I would give Trails 5 stars for the food but 3 or even 2 for the walk-up service; hence, 4 stars. By the way, I have noticed that when the owners are there, the grumpy girls perk up and focus on serving food more. It is hard to time that just right so I have lowered the expectation regarding friendly service and enjoy the rest.

It's a little shack, up on Fern Dell Dr., about half a mile north of
Los Feliz Blvd. They serve a pretty concise menu of baked goods. Here
was what we tried today:

*Cranberry and chocolate scones: They were actually decent. Had a nice  sugary crunch on the outside thought the inside could have been
softer. Not better than the Bay Area's Arizmendi which holds my gold
star for best scones evah.

*Snake dogs: These are hot dogs on a stick, wrapped in puff pastry.
GENIUS. We got them for the kids but after trying one, I regretted not
getting one too. They make 'em vegan style too.

*Vegan chili w/ a side of cornbread: I got this. It was good. Nicely
spicy. The cornbread was "meh."

*Avocado sandwich with sprouts and what we surmised to be vegan bacon  bits (that's a new one!). I didn't try this but two in our party did
and they seemed to like 'em.

*Mushroom and cashew savory pie. Didn't try this so I can't say how it
was.

*Homemade apple pie: Very good. I think they use puff pastry for the
crust and the quality of the apples was good.

*Peach and blackberry (or was it blueberry?) mini-pie: Very good as
well. It's vegan and the texture is more like a hard crumble than a
pie but everyone seemed to like this.

*Homemade lemonade: Strong and sweet.

Price-wise, it's a little high, probably b/c they can afford to get
away with it given that there's no other food vendors around there.
The snake dogs were $4.50 (which is how much the pie went for). The
sandwich, chili and savory pie all went for about $6.50.

Verdict: As part of a hike + eat combo, I thought The Trails was
great! I wouldn't drive up there just to go otherwise though.

Be still my heart... Trails Cafe is my fave local sandwich place in all of LA. Take a quiet Sunday to sit amongst nature (with Alvin and his chipmunk friends) and grub down on that mouth watering avocado sandwich (perfectly supplemented with just the right amount of alfalfa sprouts and faux bacon bits). I could live without baked goods, but veggie sandwiches... don't mess.

They have a small selection of board games in a crate outside, ready to be fondled to your liking. Sip some root beer (which the staff will gladly twist-top open for you...), take a deep breath, and enjoy being alive.

Well this place is certainly a little slice of heaven in the park to have lunch !   After reading all of the reviews, I HAD to go.  I"m glad I did!
I had a piece of cashew mushroom pie...a yummy vegan yum yum....
and my friend had the egg salad.  The lemonade is great...so is the iced tea.  They have a nice steel urn of cold water for a hot day.  I loved that old timey music was playing...the atmosphere is fantastic.
I also had a lavender vanilla cookie that was perfectly crunchy on the outside edges ..yet still chewy in the middle.  Bliss!   My friend loved the apple pie too.
So ..yeah..it's great...it's a hipster situation....it's not cheap like a taco truck or Dairy Freeze ....BUT the quality of food is high, and they are hooking up the vegans out there.
Also..I was a little hesitant to go b/c I abhor bad service...and I had seen some reviews about the service here BUT  I had a GREAT experience :)  The ladies I encountered were smiley and cute and friendly and attentive to me....all pluses in my book.
If you're just coming off of a hike?  That wasn't how I approached it..so I can't say .  I'm sure I would've loved that cold water and lemonade after a big calorie burning session.
Plus it didn't hurt that I had a Bret McKenzie sighting. He's so darn cute!
 Cheers!

I am a frequent visitor to Trails, which has become one of my favorite spots in LA. It's great for a brief respite, some great grub and coffee, an alternative to the crowds, wait, and attitude at many restaurants in the city.

Yes, their menu is fairly limited to a few sandwiches options, waffles, snake dogs and baked goods. This is more of an oasis than full-service restaurant and the peaceful surroundings count for a lot. Some folks will appreciate this more than others. Most of the food is prepared offsite. I don't even think there's a full kitchen in there. That said, I've never been disappointed in the food. Everything is freshly baked or prepared, with natural ingredients. Though I'm not a vegan, there are several options on the menu.

Trails is a great place for a light breakfast. I'd start every weekend day here if it were more convenient (and would probably wind up spending the rest of the day in the park). The waffles are small-ish, but delicious and perfectly cooked with just a bit of a crunch on the outside. I've never been a fan of scones, and theirs helped me understand why: most other places are making them wrong. The java is as good as any coffee house in town.

The Trails Cafe is one of my favorite spots in Los Angeles, conveniently located inside one of my other favorite spots in Los Angeles: Griffith Park.  The food is homemade, tasty, and not overpriced.  (I'm confused about the people who think it's pricey... maybe you should go to Alcove down the street to see what pricey really is.) The staff is friendly. The utensils are eco-friendly.  The music is a nice touch.  I think that people who've given poor ratings don't understand what the Trails really is.  If you look at it as a snack bar in the middle of a forest, you'll be impressed by it.  If you look at it as a restaurant, you will probably not be impressed.  As I'm in the former category, I will continue to frequent The Trails for a long time to come!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I'm a writer who has trouble working in her own home. In my quest for the perfect coffee shop, I have devised my own star rating system for the shops I review on this site. Each attribute below is worth one star, which makes it possible for a shop to lack desirable attributes yet still receive a perfect Yelp rating.  Anything with a perfect Yelp rating is a place in which I am happy to sit for hours on end.

* well lit
* cozy atmosphere with comfortable seating
* wifi (free or not)
* open late
* serves loose leaf tea
* variety of affordable food and beverages
* interesting people-watching, whether it be out the window or in the shop
* not too crowded (I hardly ever go on the weekends because I know the odds would be against me)

I understand that my rating system is unique to my own needs but hopefully I will be able to highlight qualities that others may be interested in.

Such a peaceful little place. I like it because it's a nice little slice of heaven in the city, and even more so because the food looked like such a culinary delight. We could only afford coffee today (and the coffee was good, $1.50 for a small, $2.00 for a med/large), but the rest of the food looked really, REALLY good. Nice comfort food. The gal working behind the counter was nice. No real complaints here, only that I wish we had more money to try out their pastries.  The only thing freaking El Senor Picky out today was the abundance of bees. But we will head back soon; my unemployment check is in the mail! Haha! :D We stopped to pick up coffee for his Pa, and then go for a walk across the street to follow the little stream. It was a nice day. Cute place to take a daytime date, cause then you can go on a romantic walk after. Look at me. How Romantic.

Trails is the requisite stop after a Griffith Observatory hike. They have a handful of delicious vegetarian options and their fresh squeezed lemonade hits the spot every time. This used to be my favorite spot, until EVERYBODY found out about it!

It's small, unique, cute, fresh, and delicious.
But the real reason to go there, is for the location..

Before the swarm of hipsters and babies/their mama's discovered this place, it was my secret spot: hidden, serene, and so unlike the Los Angeles we know.  Now it's busy, noisy, and out of something nearly every time I'm there.  Also, I believe their prices have gone up.

Despite:

I enjoy their vege sandwich, tarts, and pies.

Worth a visit!

A few months ago I had to be out of my house for a few hours. The catch? I had to have my TWO dogs with me.

With the help of yelp members I not only found this cafe but found some amazing views of Los Angeles. So there we went, up the trails, down the trails, all the way up to the Observatory, down by a stream of water.

The dogs were in dirty, dusty, calorie burning heaven. I was exhausted and starving. The Trails Cafe was a welcome sight after a long (very long) day. The dogs had the snake dog (a hot dog in a pastry crust) and i had the Avocado sandwich (avocado, alfalfa sprouts, soy bacon bits, tomato, cheese on squaw bread) . I'm not embarrassed to say we devoured it. That avocado never knew what hit it.

This place is really quaint, but the menu is narrow. They only had either a tomato basil bread or an avocado sandwich. The sandwich was not worth $7 and it's something you can easily make at home before you hit the trails.
I feel bad for the workers since they are taking orders, making the orders, and taking your money. Overall, this place is an over-glorified snack post.

One star = I'm being generous.

I went here on the recommendation of my fellow Yelpers, looking for some quick, easy, veg-friendly food.  Ohhhhh, my Yelpers, how awry you have steered me.

I got the vegan quiche... It was dry, flaky (in a bad way), big on rosemary, and little on any other flavor. The BF got an avocado sandwich that I could've easily made (and made better) at home. The two staff members were bored and unfriendly, and before we even ordered the BF turned to me and commented "Are you sure YOU want to eat here...? You did check the grade?" Yes, I had checked the grade -- which, at the time, was supposedly an 'A.' Did that mean I was immune to the flies, general dirtiness and the 6th-sense-bad-restaurant-heebie-jeebies I got? No. But I wanted so badly for it to work out, that I just chalked it up to being rustic.

Fast forward to the bad food, REALLY bad tasting water (like chemicals), and dirty picnic tables... And to the 70% C- grade that they received just a few short days after we ate there. Yep. 70 percent. As in one point away from a big fat FAIL.

Don't eat here if you value your health.

What a lovely place to hang out for a relaxing outdoor lunch, with picnic tables conducive to good conversation. Not sceney at all, reminds me of upstate NY. The food comes really fast and there's a nice selection of eats and sweets. I wish I could eat their snake dogs every day.

Dear Trails Cafe,

You know I'm not trying to be a hater by knocking your cute looking "cafe" that's conveniently located at the beginning of the Griffith Park trail. But my whining is justified. While you are situated on prime real estate for hungry hikers going and coming from the trails, it's a no brainer that you should know how to entice our tired, hiked out bodies into easy submission by a delicious yet simple menu. So what do you do? You cruise the snack highway to easy street by serving mostly expensive, small portioned, pre-made items that I resentfully term "foo foo" food.

I concede it's comforting to step onto your wood clad cafe and feel like I've gone back a little bit into the '70s with food being served to the music of Seals and Crofts at picnic tables with pine cone decorations abounding. True, this homeyness contributes to a relaxing atmosphere. However, that's where you've veered off the gravy train and traded in your peace loving Birkenstocks for some ridiculously  expensive Ugg boots. You have a chance to be awesome yet your menu lags. You're trying to sell us with your mellow 70's exterior of a simpler era but don't produce in terms of wholesome, hearty food that hikers crave. You're charging prices that reflect a cafe located in a trendy neighborhood not a park. Who are you fooling guys? You're not a cafe, you're a snack shack!

After I hike I want more from a menu that's mainly comprised of pastries, scones, hot dogs wrapped in pastry dough and other items which are a take off of that French bistro theme. Where the heck is your trail mix or homemade granola with yogurt that's gonna fill me up after I've burned calories? How bout a selection of protein filled sammies with cheese or the good old standby of PB n J? What about a little homemade chili, some energy drinks and smoothies for flair? Since you were out of almost ALL of your menu items when we stepped up to order we had to settle on two starchy slices of tart sans protein: a fig/goat cheese and the other tomato/goat cheese.  Both on what?   Foo foo pastry dough both gone in three bites flat. The price for the food and two sodas? $14.50.

Mr Owner, please listen up. If you want more love from me in the future then change it up with a real simple yet down to earth menu with less "fillers". Quit raking hikers over the coals on your pricing because of your convenient location. Don't think for one second that I'm too lazy to pack my own snacks next time I hike Griffith Park 'cause I'm not. When you wake up and get a clue I'll just may come back because after all, summer's coming and it's not too late to make it better.

Signed,
Hungry Hiker

Wow, what a location this place has! It's just beautiful there and a great place for people watching, a very eclectic crowd. There are several cement pic nick tables outside, ours was very sticky from spilled food, they need to wipe down the tables more often. There are not many choices on the menu and it looks mainly vegetarian. The service is confused and distracted, our order was simple and she still messed it up because she was so busy having an animated conversation with a coworker while she was paying very little attention to customers. The food and drinks were good but this place is poorly run, a shame, because with the location it could be great.

This is my lunch spot. It's setting is Griffith Park, the music on the outdoor sound system is pretty rad and the customers that come here are filmmakers, families, health nuts and scenster kids that are taking their out of town friends to a chill spot to regroup from jetlag under the sunshine. It's a good community and all about the California lifestyle.

The menu is small but good. They could maybe expand it just a little tiny bit to add some variety for the regulars like me.

I accidentally started calling this place Happy Trails because that's how it made me feel. Ha. My BF lives a short bike ride away, so we've made it a point to ride our bikes here on Sunday mornings/afternoons for yummy food, good coffee, and the outdoors. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly.
For breakfast, I've had the home made granola with nuts, blueberries, strawberries, elderberries, and soy milk! I'm not usually a fan of granola, but it's the only vegan breakfast item, so I got it and was delighted. Fresh fruits! BF got and enjoyed the waffle with whipped cream and strawberries. The waffles can take a bit long to make, especially when they are busy, but this didn't bother us.
Because the vegan mushroom cashew pie is only offered in the afternoons, we went back around noon to try it out. It was small, but delicious. BF ended up eating most of it and only leaving me with a couple of small bites. He thought it tasted a lot like an Australian pasty (he's Australian), which made him super happy. The pastry was flaky and the filling delicious. We also had the vegan chili with blue cornbread. The chili was a bit lukewarm, but the cornbread was yums! For dessert, we had to try one of the vegan pastries and opted for the cranberry apple galette. Peachy iced tea, soy latte, and a fresh squeezed orange juice were all refreshing. I will admit that everything is overpriced considering the size of the portions, but i haven't had anything bad here yet and it's all made fresh on site, so this isn't really a complaint. Just make sure to bring enough cash.
It's really pleasant to eat outdoors surrounded by trees, but it's not always relaxing. The mix of customers can really be a good thing one day and bad the next: annoying Hollywood types, families, cute children, doggies, runners, hikers, cyclists, etc. But there are lots of picnic tables around, so you can easily move.

Fun the first time. It's nice to have a place like this that serves vegetarian. A little too pricey for what you get. But my only suggestion to make this place better would be to serve the food fresh rather than warming it up.  Definately recommend coming at least once.

Want to instantly feel like you've escaped the urban jungle of Los Angeles?  Head to The Trails cafe and have a delicious sweet or savory treat amidst the beautiful sanctuary of pine trees, beautiful skies, and...(listen)...ahhhh.  Quiet.

It's been a while since I've felt as serene and content as I did while having a light lunch here (minus the surprisingly intense game of checkers The George and I played on the bench post-snack).  While The Trails can't really take credit for the atmosphere, they have some of the best pastries I've ever laid eyes on.  One word.  PIE.  Mounds of neatly cut, cinnamon shrouded, non-watery apple pieces with a heavenly flaky, clearly homemade crust.  Wow.  While I didn't have the scones, they looked awesome and the people next to us had coffee which also smelled delicious.  I think I've discovered my new favorite (good weather) Sunday morning spot.
