I've purchased furniture from this spot before and I love it.
They have unique, one-of-a-kind retro pieces and it works well for those people who can be a little creative with their living space.
Unlike some other antique/retro stores in the area, which can be over-priced and have pieces that are broken or don't work, The Touch has cool pieces in great to excellent condition at reasonable prices. I also like the fact that if you by multiple pieces, they are willing to bargain with you. The service is also nice and friendly.
You have to come back every few weeks because you never know what you'll find.
I loooove this store. I drooled over the furniture for years, stopping in whenever I was nearby. Just recently, I bought a beautiful mid-century modern, danish desk for my partner. The desk was very, very affordable. The guy was willing to negotiate and also broke it up into four separate payments. This is the first "real" piece of furniture in our house. Something we'll probably hold on to for years. Neither my partner nor I make a ton of money, and we wouldn't have been able to get anything nearly this nice without the flexibility of the payment plan. I'll be returning to this place again and again as I try to eliminate the cheap Ikea crap from our house.
"I'd fuck some some vintage Danish Teak wood."
No, I'm not talking about a Euro sugar daddy who just slipped himself a Viagra. I'm talking about the furniture at The Touch. The furniture that is fuckable. And vintage. And Danish.
It's that hot, seriously.
One star deducted because, uhm, I realize that I'm gyrating against your wares, but I do have an Amex handy. How about a little customer service?
Very awkward. Sometimes there are some good pieces but the majority of pieces are lower end or just bizarre (like a chair made out of cow horns). It reminds me of a consignment store. The guy working there isn't very attentive and every time I have gone in there he is playing intense checkers with some dude. Just really weird, awkward vibe that doesn't really satisfy. A good clean up, raise in quality and attentiveness would make this place really cool.
bah! more like "the touch-up!" I'm kind of dissapointed. I was looking for a chair and I noticed that a lot of them were restored in some way.
I fell victim to a sleeper chair. It has a crack in a seem. Its only noticable when you lean use its back support!
inspect the furniture and use it as you would at home so you dont fall for any suprises. haggle with them. the economy is bad right now and furniture is the last thing on the neccesities list.
all in all, they have a good selection on mid-century danish furniture.
good luck.
There's enough cheep and cheerful midcentury modern shit in this place to give Don Draper pause. Check it out for dressers and coffee tables. The delivery guy is nice, too.
I bought my first mid-century modern piece here, without having to promise my first born. AND YOU CAN TOO!
This place stands apart from all the other Valencia furniture shops (too trendy/full of broken crap/pushing new stuff as vintage that's been given a coat of paint and distressed - you know the score)
I love my sideboard and my 1920s double shelf which I use as a TV stand. And I love that they were brought home for a fraction of the asking price.
Moral of the story? Fear not and negotiate my friends, negotiate...
Sometimes when my eyes feel as though they have not seen anything worthwhile in a long time, I stop by this place and just meander through its maze of furniture.
Beautiful stuff, mostly from 1950s and 1960s and mostly furniture influenced by the clean Scandanavian furniture. The couches and loveseats come in all colors; if you want something to enliven your living room, this is a good place to check out.
The Touch also has wonderfully wild and wacky lamps from the same era. Currently, there's a table lamp that resembles a mushroom with swirly lines around it that lights up throughout the base and the top.
They also always have a couple of old manual typewriters...One of these days, i will get one as a treat for myself.
It's better than seeing the furniture collection at SFMOMA, more fun and more eclectic.
i found myself wandering into the touch one of the first times i ever came to san francisco. when i finally moved here in may, i was faced with the daunting task of locating and putting a "real" store-front face to all of my memorable sightseeings.
the touch was definitely one of the stores that retraced my steps over and over again to find.
their affordable, vintage furniture and accessories makes me really sad that my tiny apartment is already crammed full of all my crap that i dragged here from chicago.
really really sad. like, garage-sale-this-saturday -can-we-start-all-over-again-new -it'll-be-hard-but-might-be-worth-it sad.
...which i suppose means that i love the touch, and that it's a good thing.
Good prices for vintage mid century and decorative decor. The owners are the nicest in the business.
i have no need to buy furniture. yet, i found myself wandering through the touch.
ok, i'll say it: their name is creepy.
they had some really nice pieces of furniture here. if i had some money to spare, i'd find myself remodeling and going here. but i'm not, so it's a nice window shopping stop for a slow saturday afternoon.
also, the one thing i found i couldn't part without was not for sale. why put a lego phone on display if you can't buy that sucka? my point. now i absolutely *HAVE* to find a working lego phone.
thanks, the touch.
Not sure what is going on here. Some of the product is nice, some is just awful. Some is refinished and some is warped and stained. Not cheap for what you get. Maybe better lighting, better store display, and cheaper prices. And like another reviewer wrote, what's with the name???
Touch has a pretty wide variety of used furniture in varying condition. Most of the stuff is midcentury modern and in passable condition. Some is better, some worse. It's not as picky or pricey as the fallen Den or the too-hip-for-you X21 nearby, but that just means you can actually buy a decent looking chair for less than you paid for your car (in my case this is a fairly low bar). At the same time, it's much better edited than Harrington's, which I think actually has its own zip code.
They're very forthcoming with information like where a piece came from or which are knockoffs. They seem to price things to sell, which means they always have new stuff. And it beats the crap out of laminated particleboard junk, overpriced design stores, or waking up at 5:30 in the morning on the first Sunday of the month.
Yuck!
I love this store! Friends and I have all bought things from David the owner, from small nick-nacks to a large Danish Modern credenza last weekend. David is knowledgable, friendly and willing to bargain (within reason). Selection is definitely a step above other shops in the neighborhood.
