One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Oh how I love the Kitchen Sink. Tons of meat, tons of cheese, and tons of special sauce. Or maybe it's just mayo. I don't know, but that sandwich sure is special. And they make it fast, so you'll be just in time to get back to work for your lunch break! (I don't know if that's a good thing or not, but it's up to you.) I love how the have an option to cut carbs in half by scooping the bread. I love the friendly employees. But most of all, I looooove the kitchen sink.
Best sandwich you can find at such an amazing price:$4.99!
They're yummy toasted treats...and don't skip the "peppers" or giardiniera which is tangy and tart and adds zip to the sandwich.
You can't find better quality ingredients, value and taste this side of town!
Co-workers described this place as one step above Subway. I think they nailed it.
The veg sandwich is mushrooms and a slice of cheese. I added onions, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, assuming that they might add some kind of spice or marinade to the mushrooms when cooking them. Now that I've had it I'm not sure they even cooked the mushrooms, and I think they also forgot the onions. Blandest sandwich this side of... well, Subway.
On the positive side: $5 and quick service. Their meaty sandwiches might be better than the lame veg sandwich I got.
Much hyped by an old co-worker, I decided to try The Toaster Oven.
Ordering is a bit hectic, you essentially yell what you want and assume they'll get it right. As far as I can tell, they always do.
I had the roast beef on wheat, it was good. The best sandwich ever? No. But good. It will definitely become a regular lunch spot - convenient, good food, quick service. The line was 20-30 people deep and I was still only here for 10 minutes.
It's in walking distance from the office, it's quick, and it's satisfying.
Pros: For $5, there are a handful of sandwiches to choose from. My choice each time is the Italiano. Also popular are the chicken or meatball. And, a good addition to the sandwiches is the hot peppers.
Drinks line one wall (they have Peach Honest Tea!) and chips line the other. The line can sometimes reach the door and beyond at lunch hour but the efficiency of the workers keeps the queue moving fast, so it's good to know ahead what you want so you can shout it out.
Cons: For some, these subs are "too small" to be filling, the sandwiches can get quite messy, and the consistency can be a little off when it gets super busy.
Overall: Would come back for a convenient lunch, but I've had better sandwiches.
Why did I love my experience here? I've summed it up in a couple bullet points:
- Everything costs the same. It's kinda nice to ignore the price of the sandwich you choose... i mean it's not like I pay THAT much attention in general.. but for some reason it's comforting to know
-Everything looked really good. I had the BBQ chicken wtver, but the others looked just as tasty
-The line moves quick and the workers are organized and friendly. I loved it! No worry, no pain no fear. I order it and got it.
-damn this food is bomb. GREAT sandwich... I'd go as far to say it's as good as Ikes. The only reason Ikes is on top, is their rediculous number of options... and I mean in the end how important is that really?
DAMN GOOD toaster oven. I'm happily impressed.
I picked up a hot mushroom and pepperoni sandwich here last Friday 10/23/209. The ingredients were fresh, the marinara sauce was tasty and the service was fast.
I'm looking forward to trying what other sandwiches they have to offer here.
As far as the venue goes, it's a small and quaint little shop, clean and warm. I have yet to check out the lavatory so I cannot speak on that part of the resto.
if you are vegan then you should avoid this place. I had the veggie sandwich without cheese or mayo and it just didn't taste good. Can't comment about the regular sandwiches. A lot of sandwich places make the mistake of creating veggie sandwiches by substituting veggies for meat. That rarely works because you end up with a high carb meal without the fat and protein of meat. One should really consider using seitan, tempeh or tofu instead of meat.
All restaurant owners should understand that when there are vegans in a group they control where the group goes. So you need to please them even if you don't care about saving the planet or compassion towards fellow creatures.
Great sandwich at a great price!
I really like a good sandwich. I'll put in the extra energy, time, creativity, and cash to compile myself a tasty one, rather than lazing my way through the process to merely eat a passable one. I think that's why I don't like The Toaster Oven. The experience feels rushed and the product skimped.
The menu is limited. If you're going to go with short and sweet, make sure your options are varied and make sure they're perfected. The Toaster Oven offers about 8 different sandwiches with the only real difference among them being the type of meat. Bo-ring.
I tend to prefer a highly textural experience when chomping a sandwich, so chewy bread, mushy meat, and soggy lettuce don't really appeal to me. I'm not a mayo fan, so I was happy to see a vinaigrette alternative on the menu, but quickly disappointed when I unwrapped my oil-doused sub.
I also hate the line system. The countertops are high and even though I'm 5'10, I feel like I have to stand on my tip toes to answer the first guy in the sandwich assembly line who's yelling at me to yell back my choice of sandwich. I know everybody's in a hurry, but can't you wait 'til I'm closer to the counter? It feels weird to yell at a stranger over the heads of several other strangers, and it feels even more weird to be yelled AT by one.
Aside from my food and service snobbery, there are things I like about this establishment. The food is super cheap. I mean, $4.99 for a sandwich? Feels so old-timey. They also serve pop chips, and while I can't exactly elevate their star status for this one, I do love me some 100 calorie chips. I also like the pepper mixture. It's delightfully crunchy and vinegar-y but if you opt for it, don't bother getting anything else on your bread, 'cause it's really all you're going to taste.
About twice a month I get the chance to work in San Francisco. This is a special treat because I get to visit my favorite co-workers and explore their local lunch spots.
On this visit, we headed down the block to The Toaster Oven.
I ordered two toasted sandwiches (each priced at $4.99):
The Italiano (one for lunch)
Mortadella, capicola, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese with onions, lettuce, and mustard.
The Piezzano (one for the road).
Pepperoni, mushrooms, marinara sauce, provolone cheese with onions.
Each sandwich was fresh and tasty; however it does have that enormous presentation. I love my sandwiches big as in Togo's big. But for $5.00 each, I couldn't complain. Four stars for my visit, friendly service, and a big recommendation to eat here if you're dieting. The Subway thing gets old for lunch. So the Toaster Oven will be my go to spot for healthy sandwiches.
Now, I'm reading about this "Kitchen Sink" sandwich. Oh man... the fat boy in me is calling!
Notes:
- Michelle B is right! Why is the service counter so freakin high? What are you guys hiding back there?
- Parking: I'm spoiled because my company pays for $20.00 parking at the 455 Market Garage (its about two blocks down).
- If you're watching your carb intake, you can request them to "scoop" your bread (which means they remove 1/3 of the inside bread). http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Their breakfast sandwiches are AMAZING. I do not know why, but they are!
Whenever I grab breakfast here, I get sausage/egg with provolone on a biscuit. OMG it is so freakin' good. One time I got it three times during the workweek. It was that addicting.
It's $3.14 after tax, which is cheaper and better tasting that Chaat and Lee's.
Mmmm. Toasty, yummy, good. Oh and inexpensive!
A nice go-to sangy spot in the FiDi. Way better than Subway and comparable in price.
i love this sandwich shop. one of my favorite types of sandwiches are meatball sandwiches and the one from toaster oven does not let down. they put it on their italian roll, but you can request a wheat one. let them know which sandwich is your poison and wait for the conveyor belt to move the sandwich through the heating oven and wait for another person to finish your sandwich with the veggies. for my meatball, there's nothing else i need. the end result is meatball sub perfection.
i can't wait to go back to try their milkshakes.
It's a good toasted sandwich for cheap.
You can't go wrong.
The only thing i'd complain about is the size of the sandwich, I ate a whole sandwich and in 30 minutes I'll probobly be hungry again, but for $5.60 out the door with a meatball toasted sandwich you can't really complain.
The peppers, and nice environment they have set up are what really differentiate this sandwich place
Those that know me can attest that sandwiches and I are quite fond of each other.
I believe this love affair started rather innocently when I was young; long summer days in the pool would lead to assembling gigantic triple decker 'wiches to induce lil' kid food comas...I had no idea at the time how well we clicked. Since then, those little experiences have evolved into a full-on life long love affair which makes me always on the search for my next fantastic sandwich tryst.
My love for 'wiches has grown so deep...so pervasive...that I now need to know at least two stellar places in each 'hood that I can go and get my fix or else...I may not even make the journey.
Sometimes....sometimes, there are sandwich places that transcend these go-to spots for a mere fix. There are places that are a destination in of themselves. Toaster Oven is indeed one such place.
If I time it right...I can make it from my office on Jackson/Montgomery to Toaster Oven on freakin' 2nd and past Mission...have any sandwich that makes my head swim and my stomach content...enjoy a pleasant post-'which pillow talk with whomever I've met up with that day, and actually make it back in a reasonable amount of time. It is worth the hassle!
I can only think of one 'nooner that would be better...but...if I can bring along a Toaster Oven Meatball sandwich to that...I may actually die of pleasure in a pure Costanza-esque sandwich and sexfest!
Go to Toaster Oven...it is so good that I'm willing to share. Hopefully, they'll get so busy they'll open up more!
Yummy and cheap sandwiches - what else could you ask for?
Good milkshakes, that's what. I was craving a milkshake after I downed my kitchen sink (delish, a little to heavy on the sauce though), and so I went through the very fast line to order an Oreo one.
It was mediocre. And expensive, considering my sandwich was only $4.99 and the shake was $3.29.
I'll come back, but not for the shakes.
This is a mini chain-let that reminds me a ton of potbellys in the dc area. The bread is a tasty flatbread and my fav is the meatball. WAY better than subway and the prices are close. I've actually found that b-fast has earned the four star rating from me (even though the lunch is pretty good). The key to their insanely great bfast sandwiches is the crispy bacon bits!!! the bacon is not just a flabby piece of undercooked fat. And you get to choose from a bagel, biscuit, or toast.
One of the best sandwich places in the area. Not comparable in size to a Subway footlong but still, the taste (yummy!) and price (cheap!)... talk about a big bang for your buck. I usually get a simple TURKEY on wheat but once in a great while when I've convinced myself that I won't feel too guilty after indulging I'll get the KITCHEN SINK. Enjoy!
Really good toasted sandwiches for really good prices. They're even 1 cent cheaper than Subway's 5 dollar foot long. $4.99 for their meaty sandwiches and $4.59 for their veggies.
I had the "Kitchen Sink" for lunch (roast beef, turkey, salami, ham, provolone cheese).
The Toaster Oven is a good sandwich spot. I've had a couple of their sandwiches, I think the same as Walter P's mentions: The Italiano and the Piezzano. I customize my sandwiches a bit because I'm not a fan of pork, or most condiments, plus, it's been a while since I've been to the Toaster Oven, so I can't remember exactly what or how I ordered it.
I just remember that it was good. Warm, flaky bread, great flavour. Good local spot if you're walking around, tough to get parking though.
I don't know if I was spoiled from Davis or what.. but i don't understand the hype.
- the bread got cold really fast (uhh.. toaster oven?)
- cookie was pretty horrible
- the meat was on one side while the vegetable was on another
- the avocado is not fresh! (if subway avocados can be fresh... and this place can't? minus one star)
- the selection is not impressive
- service was bleh...
I have definitely had better...
[[MISSION: ORDER A SANDWICH]]
TOASTEROVEN: What can I get you?
KEANE: Turkey on wheat, no cheese please.
TOASTEROVEN: Turkey on wheat. No cheese. Got it.
*waits for sandwich to come out of toaster*
TOASTEROVEN: Yours is the turkey right?
KEANE: Actually, I wanted it without cheese...
TOASTEROVEN: OH! You wanted it WITHOUT cheese?
KEANE: Yeah... you... repeated it... right after me.
TOASTEROVEN: Oh, sorry about that...
*fixes sandwich*
TOASTEROVEN: What do you want on your sandwich?
KEANE: Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mustard... to go, please.
TOASTEROVEN: To go... got it.
*puts on condiments*
TOASTEROVEN: I'm sorry... you wanted that... to go, right?
KEANE: ... yeah.
*brings sandwich to register*
TOASTEROVEN: Do you want a receipt?
KEANE: YES.
This was my only bad experience with Toaster Oven. I can't really complain, since I get a decent, toasty sandwich for $5. My only consistent issue is that I tend to smell like cooked meat when I leave the place.
And I wasn't even going to include the above encounter in this review, but when I got back to my desk I realized one final fatal mistake:
Onions instead of pickles.
MOTHERFUCKER!!
I usually get sandwichs here before my evening classes. They usually don't have a line in the evening (after 5pm), so it's super quick to get a sandwich.
I always get the BBQ sandwich. The sandwichs are smaller than the foot long from subway, so you can actually eat the whole thing and not feel sick afterwards.
It ends up being a little less than 6 bucks, which isn't bad for dinner.
Best sandwich place I have ever eaten at, and it is VERY reasonably priced. I believe my sandwich was only $4.99. Quite a bargain in San Francisco. I highly recommend their turkey sandwich. I'm looking forward to eating there again.
Have you heard of Potbellys? (I'm talking about the sandwich shop in Chicago!)
I've had Potbellys twice in my life and am absolutely in love with it. Their sandwiches are simple yet tasty. I've always stuck with the A-wreck which has all kinds of meat on it. This is the same exact sandwich as the Kitchen Sink at Toaster Oven.
Potbelly's = Toaster Oven
Toaster Oven = Potbelly's
I've tried all the sandwiches here but their veggie. $4.99!! WHAT A BARGAIN.
Turkey (turkey, swiss)
Italiano (mortadella, capicola, salami, pepperoni, provolone)
Ham (smoked ham, swiss)
Kitchen Sink (roast beef, turkey, salami, ham, provolone)
Roast Beef (roast beef, provolone)
Meatball (italian metaballs, marinara sauce, provolone)
Piezzano (pepperoni, mushrooms, marinara, provolone)
Tuna (real mayo tuna salad, provolone)
KC BBQ Chicken (kansas city style bbq chicken, provolone)
My favs are Italiano and Kitchen Sink.
Your choice of white or wheat bread.
Make sure to
1. Get it toasted
2. Get some vinaigrette sauce on your sandwich
Follow 1 and 2 and you're good to go.
Warning: If you stay in here too long, you'll walk out smelling like their tasty sandwiches. No harm in that but it can make you hungry again!
I used to come here for lunch sometimes when I worked at CNET. Toaster Oven has some of the cheapest and best bang for your buck sandwiches in the city. Sure the line gets long in there, but i'll tell you this, when you bite into an Italiano or a turkey with avocado, heaven. Sweet sweet heaven. But maybe this was because I was worked so hard and starving, oh well, Toaster Oven is great.
What is also great about toaster oven is the breakfast sandwiches, and i'll come out and say this now, the breakfast sandwiches are much better than the lunch sandwiches. I typically got a sausage and egg sandwich on a sour roll. If I was a sandwich, I would marry the breakfast sandwich. It's that good.
Tips and Pointers:
-Call in before you go to Toaster Oven, pick up line is less than one person
-The side salads aren't too bad either
-Milkshakes are really good as well
-Prices are cheap
-Lines are long
-Eating there is clean, but space is limited

This place has some bomb ass sandwiches. I think the bread is really what makes this so delicious. I mean, there's nothing really special about the bread or anything, its just bread. But it's toasty bread. And not like, "hi I'm crunchtastic" Toasty bread. It's like the perfet mixture of softness and golden flakey crunchyness that you can't help but think about your next bite while you're actually indulging in your first bite. Does this make me a sandwich addict? Maybe...But you just wait until you slap one of these bad boys in your mouth. awweeeesssommme.
I took away a star, yes I know...but it was only because I think after going there a couple times I was overcharged here and there. I mean, I got some chips and an orangina with a sandwich and somehow it was $15? Yeah...I don't like that. And I'm a sucker for not speaking up at the food source so I take stars away on yelp. That'll teach you to overcharge me, lol.
Overall the food is fantastic. They have fresh baked cookies and milkshakes without a guarantee they will bring all the boys to the yard which I think they might be working on, and a large variety of meats and cheeses and fixuns to doll that sandwich up just the way you like it. Good job Toaster Oven!
Sandwiches are decent, but it's basically like Jason's Deli. Interesting that they also have milkshakes, but it's a good option for lunch.
PROS:
- Reasonably priced
- Good Sandwiches
CONS:
- No parking (street)
- Short hours cater to office workers
I hate Subway. I hate the sandwiches. I hate the $5 foot-long song that gets stuck in my brain like a wad of gum on my shoe and even thought I carry a strong torch for the sammich, anything that even remotely reminds me of a fast food type of sandwich place, makes me weary.
And so imagine my surprise when I was dragged here the other day for lunch and it was, well, it was really good. I ordered The Kitchen Sink sammich and it comes with roast beef, turkey, salami, ham and provolone. Slap and extra portion of mustard with a quick swipe of some mayo and you have sammy yumminess.
I will definitely be back and while the line is ridiculous at times, I will just click my heels and hope that I hit it on a slow time like I did last week. We shall see :)
On a separate note: For those of you who now have that annoying $5 foot-long Subway song stuck in your head, I apologize. Whoopsie ;)
Okay...so I gave my bf sooooo much shit when he stopped in here for the first time last year during lunch as I told him it would be like a Quiznos/Subway and just be NASTY!!!!! He ate his sandwich when he got back to work and surprisingly to me...he didn't get sick! I had not yet been there myself to eat, but hate the idea of sub sandwich anything due to a past experience 15 years ago in high school when a Subway dude drooled on my sandwich while tossing on the lettuce. I was too drunk and in complete shock to say anything, but immediately threw it away and lost my appetite. I have yet to be back in such an establishment...that is till about a month ago.
After working in the area for almost 2 years, I am getting tired of the same lunch choices and everything being soooo pricey. I read Yelp and thought that I would finally give Toaster Oven a try myself. MMMMMMM....YUMMALICIOUS! I first ordered the turkey with light cheese (lactose issues), and everything on it but mayo and onions. Wow, those peppers are so delicious! My second time I had the veggie, which is basically just mushrooms and wasn't too excited about it, but it was satisfying. Today I had the Italian. It was just what my hangover from Sunday Funday needed. Perfect!
YAY for Yelp and helping me get over my fear of sub sandwich joints!
I have a soft spot for toasted sandwiches. Toaster Oven is a reasonably priced and fast place to get lunch - your sandwich gets put together assembly-line style. My coworker and I always split and Italiano with everything on it and whatever other sandwich strikes our fancy.
Read some reviews that said the line could be long so I called at 12:30 to order the Italiano and they said it'd be ready in 5-10 minutes! I'm only a block away so my sandwich was still nice and warm. I'm really pleased with the sandwich! It's large enough to fill my belly and totally wallet friendly (only $5.60!).
One drawback (which was my fault) was that I didn't know they'd be SO generous with the hot peppers so I had to pick some out to save the well being of my tongue.
If you've been to the East Coast, it's much like Potbellys (shoutout to 17th Street NW!) - everything from the menu, the fridge with the drinks, the wall between patron and staff, and the sides that they sell are identical (though the line moves from right to left in DC, and left to right in SF). I like the TO because it's quick, not expensive and filling (better than Quiznos taste and almost cheap as Subway). I don't think it's something I could eat everyday, but maybe once or twice a month would suffice. If you have complete disregard for your health like I do, go for the Kitchen Sink Sandwich - instant food coma.
The menu has something for all tastes, so it's an agreeable spot for a nice quick lunch without breaking the bank.
Beats scrubway / quiznos
"U-G-L-Y...you ain't got no alibi...you ugly...uh..uh...you ugly!"
I cannot help but have this schoolyard chant in my head when I go to Toaster Oven for lunch. This happens because, to me, Toaster Oven is just a Subways/Quiznos hybrid with a better alibi.
I don't mean to disparage Toaster Oven because:
*it's cheap for a FiDi/SOMA sandwich (Most are $5.41 with tax)
*the lines moves quickly
*the sandwiches are toasted (hence the name)
*they are pretty filling
*the order guys and gals are always friendly and smiling (even in a lunch rush)
You are not going to get uber-fresh, organic, specialty ingredients here but hey, take it for what it is--a decent, filling lunch option under $6 in the city.
Still trying to figure out the deal with the avocado...

Toaster Oven is a decent sandwich spot. They've got the toasted sandwich thing going for them.… Read more »
What is the big deal about this place? I really don't understand...
The part I get is that it offers filling and totally edible sandwiches for about $5, which is great.
The part I don't get is why everyone raves about it. I feel like Toaster Oven is dangerously close to Quizno's/Subway in taste and quality (granted, slightly better)... but maybe I just need to give them another shot. It's also hectic and confusing as all hell in there during the lunch hour.
I wish we could give half-star ratings. I'd give TO 2 1/2 stars for sure.
To the Toaster Oven Interior Architect - It is not ok make the counter height 58 inches tall. Those of us who are 5 feet tall only have 60 inches plus some heel height to work with and it is very embarrassing to look like a five year old who is using their hands to pull themselves up to nose level to see what is going on.
To the Toaster Oven Efficiency Engineer - Very smart to have us tell you our order so that it is already toasted before we get up to the condiment line. But, it would have been nice to understand that was what I was supposed to do cause I got confused and yelled at when I was already low on blood sugar.
To the Toaster Oven Sandwich Artist - My sandwich was a-ok. Perhaps I should have ordered the kitchen sink that everyone is raving about because my turkey and swiss with avocados was pretty boring. The bread was toasty and delicious and the ingredients seemed quality so all in all it was a solid sandwich for about $6 bucks.
Yesterday my boss told me she was going to get a shake at Toaster Oven, I had never heard of it and I DONT KNOW WHY!!! First off I work 2 blocks from it and second I love toasty sandwhiches. So I came here today with my co-workers. The line was not bat at all and my sandwhich was ready in a flash! I got the Italian one, I'm a meat freak! Next I want to try the salami, mushroom and sause one. It looked ever so tender. They also had nice refrigerated water cups which I appreciate.
The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is becaus I think it would be rather easy for them to have a compost trashcan, since most of their producsts are compostable, well not their plastic silverware, but you get the point. Now that I think you cant blame them most places could compost and dont, but you can at home =) And also there were not many choices for veggetarians, dont get me wrong I would personally never get a veggie sandwhich, what's the point, eat a salad, less carbs... but still for my friends trying to protect animals, lets give them a toasty meal as well!
That being said, I thourally enjoyed my sandwhich and it's not like when you go to subway and always get the foot long because it's only a dollar more. I ate the whole thing and it was the perfect amount. My body as quite satisfied. Thanks Toaster Oven, you sure can toast!
