Seeeeeeeriously, you need to eat here. I went to San Diego for the weekend with my boyfriend, and for the 2 days we were in town ate at Tin Fish twice. The food is delicious and plentiful. It's a liiittle expensive for fish and chips, or chowder, but it's so tasty, and satisfying.
Plusses: The outdoor atmosphere; Lively, pretty dining area. The food is damn good. The beers are gigantic. Right near Petco Park, easy walking distance to night scene.
Minuses: I dream about Tin Fish.
Do you know about 'that' moment? Let me tell you about that moment. It is the time instance where all senses collide with pleasure. For this unique joint, it is the sight of the Gaslamp district and all its new buildings and sunny San Diegan day where the people look nice and the food is glistening in the sun. The oil off the fried cod is bouncing off the rays while the golden brown batter is perfectly crackling crispy and light. The smell of the fish and the criscut fries that come with it enters my nose and spells "eat me". And not to forget, it is the taste of the wrapped fish taco and the instantaneous soft taco shell with the crisp of the fish and crunchy coleslaw that deems this that "moment"
I can't believe that in 3 days, I found a place that made me come back again right before my flight out of San Diego. This place is amazing. The outdoor patio is great, the food is delicious, the pricing is very reasonable, and its that moment which makes me love this spot in San Diego.
You definitely can't go wrong with Fish Taco Platter which comes with a giant fried cod fish and cole slaw and criscut fries. Beware, its a lot of food on its own already.
Unique location at the end of the IB pier.
Pigeons and their poop are your dining partners. Seating needs improvement, but it's at the end of a pier and down below is an ocean what do you expect?
Anyways their waffles fries, coleslaw, fried oysters, salmon tacos are yummy here.
Good place to bring out of town guests, especially if they don't live near a beach. They can dine above one. Oh yeah, it gets windy bring a jacket.
i have never had a bad meal here and no one i have ever take has had a bad meal. everything is the bomb including the burger my husband orders because of an aversion to seafood. it is a pleasant walk down the pier and barring a handicap when did we gt so lazy we can't take a nice walk. the view is amazing. when i was there last November and there were like a hundred dolphins (not an exaggeration) swimming right below us. you can't pay for that. and if you have a problem with the birds yo can sit inside.
I ordered the combination plate with fish, scallops, shrimp, calamari, and waffle fries. mmmm mmmm mmmm.
The cole slaw has a sweet vinegarish dressing, not the usual mayo kind. i like it. The batter on the food was really light and crispy.
I liked the food and sitting outside on the pier. There are lots of pigeons so please dont drop any food or you and your neighbor may get pooped on. Also, there is a huge pelican that hangs out there too. I named him Ivan. I feel sad for the Ivan, he just stands there looking really pitiful.
Had a wonderful salmon burrito but the sitting accomodations need some work. The outdoor tables had bird droppings on them, and they were right next to people fishing.
These were some of the best fish/shrimp tacos i've EVER had. they are huge too, so don't order 2 like i did thinking i could eat it all :)
they were awesome.
only small complaint was that the place was a little grubby inside. dirty bathrooms and didn't seem to be the cleanest place. but i guess some of the best food comes from places like that.
Thier Coleslaw is the BEST!!! I hate mayoinassie cole slaw and thiers is vinigary!! I LOVE it!!!!!
Thier Fried shrimp, Clams, fries, and fish are all delicious!! I dont think anything beats the Tin Fish!!!
Plus the walk down the pier to get there is nice.
Ate here a few years ago when visiting. We were staying in a house there on the beach, so it was close by....figured why not?!
Well, heres why not.....the food was, eh. The best thing was the waffle fries.
Overpriced and overcooked food. Don't go out of your way to eat here.
pros...great fish n' chips, even if you are taking it home, which is a good 20 minute drive. the fish are nice and crispy and the fries are the waffle cut fries. i think the food would have been better had we ate it at the place. you can even buy some shirts with the logo on it. all in all a good place if you are in the south bay to get some very good fish and chips.
cons...horrible long walk along a very uneven pier, and all that implies. you get the nice mix of people fishing (for fun, for food, for sport, and just to waste time), and all the "fresh" smells associated with a pier, water, beach, and fish (both live, and not to live, both whole, and opened with parts missing and fish bodily fluids everywhere). the pier must be a a quarter of a mile long and the tin fish was all the way on the other end. and also not very good with parking either. but i go for the fish n' chips not the walk.
This place is at the end of the pier, so it gets cold in winter. The food is totally fabulous and if you don't want to walk they have a shuttle to the end of the pier. They serve the typical fish 'n chips, clam chowder, fried shrimp, etc. These are all great and come with their yummy criss-cut fries, but my favorite is the Swordfish taco which is made with a huge steak that is a dinner portion. They also make them with grilled salmon and shrimp. It is one of our many secrets.
oh how i miss and love you tin fish .
i used to live in IB and one of the only good things there is this place best fried oysters ever . try it out its yum yum yummu
Wow! To all of those people who said they have the best fish tacos in SD (google best fish tacos in SD), you all need to take an educational trip down to TJ and visit Andy at Baja Fish Tacos. This was a waste of a walk down the pier. First of all, the sopa de siete mares was nothing more than tomato soup with a few pieces of rubber, i mean calamari, thrown in. The fish taco on the other hand was an uncooked mission "tortilla" with some cabbage, a piece of fish fried with breadcrumbs, ranch dressing, and unmelted cheese. Who batters fish with breadcrumbs for a fish taco? This was by far the worst fish taco that I've ever tried. Ranch dressing? White sauce is made from Mayo, crema y lima, look it up. Aside from being way over priced, the food was terrible and the atmosphere was dirty. Also, we had to wait forever for our food because they staff were incompetent and couldn't figure out how to cook a tortilla from a package. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
