Just three hours away from DC, the Tides Inn is an idyllic escape and served as the perfect setting for my birthday getaway last weekend. I highly recommend a room on the water, as the outdoor veranda is a perfect spot to take in sunrise and sunset, plus the view is unbeatable.

The Inn has both a pool and chairs set up along the sands of the lake (apparently this is a creek, but you could have fooled me, it's huge). Not normally one to desert my chaise lounge during a vacay, I was inspired to move several muscles due to the Inn's plethora of activity options. After a morning of quality sun and spa time (Suzanne is a magician of a masseuse), I found myself kayaking, taking a bike ride, playing some scratch golf on the "par 3" course (I put it in quotes as I am more of a "par 7" player at this stage in my golf career) and trying my hand at croquet.

The meals in both the casual restaurant and formal dining room are impressive, with a menu boasting fish flown in from Honolulu and Argentine beef. My favorite dishes: the seafood trilogy appetizer (a terrific trifecta of shrimp tempura, seared scallop and a crab cake), the fried oysters and the grilled filet mignon. Ooh and be sure to sit by the piano player in the Chesapeake Club afterwards and request his Sinatra medley- his "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is the stuff of dreams.

Secret treat: each night, the resort has a bonfire on the beach for guests to enjoy after dinner. It's also worth noting that the service was extremely attentive and the guest shop has everything you need under the sun.

Casual elegance exudes from this tucked-away retreat. A+ all around.

History

Established in 1947

The resort is tucked away on a private, lush peninsula in the "Northern Neck" of Virginia, bounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the East, the Potomac River to the north, and the Rappahannock River to the south, in the small community of Irvington, Lancaster County, Virginia. The Tides Inn sits on a bluff overlooking Carters Creek, surrounded by manicured grounds.

The Northern Neck of Virginia was called the "Athens of America" during the 18th century for its great plantations and great minds. Three presidents -- George Washington, James Madison and James Monroe--were born here, as was Robert E. Lee. Today, the region boasts picture-perfect towns laced with old Indian trails, colonial roads, and tidal creeks.
