11 reviews for The Tavernacle Social Club
The Tavernacle is tons of fun, a real treat for the traveler, Texan, or other out of towner trying to have a good time in Salt Lake City.
The dueling piano format is tops, but don't try talking after trying out your voice all Tuesday night at terrific voiume levels. Tacky!
The tableau of music is terrific. It's ten times the fun of ordinary bars and entertaining, too. No trick here.
Try it, and take all your friends. No doubt, they will be tickled ...
So, let's get this out of the way. Stuff you need to know about the Tav:
1) If you're going in a group on Friday or Saturday, make reservations. You don't want to have to stand, right?
2) The drinks are weak and seriously overpriced. Consider doing some pre-drinking.
3) This place is filled with Paris Hilton wannabes and stereotypical frat boys.
Ok, ok. Now, with all that being said, if you get your group together, request a couple of good songs, and sing along as loud as you possibly can, this place is a blast. Sure, you might not be able to talk the next day, but it's worth it.
Definitely good for a special occasion.
This is my absolute favorite bar in Salt Lake! I would say it is more of a place you go to have fun with your friends and not so much a place to meet new people - that's because you will be so involved in the show that you won't have time to test out your pickup lines.
There are two "dueling pianos" in the center of the bar and request slips on every table. You can request any song from sing-along staples like Piano Man to something totally bizarre like Spice Girls or Tenacious D. So, you send up your request with a tip for the piano players and if you are generous enough (or creative enough), they will play it. Equally important, if they play a song you hate - you can pay them to stop!!
For special occasions you can arrange for yourself or a friend to go up and dance on the piano with a feather boa or about a million other scenarios fit for celebration and embarrassment.
I highly recommend that you call ahead to reserve a table for even a small group and be sure to show up around 9:00 to claim your spot. Drinks are averagely priced, but I have to say, this is one place where I don't mind spending a lot of money because it really is a great time - and this is coming from a total cheapskate!
Oh, and there is NO SMOKING at the Tavernacle. You have been warned.
SUZY the bartender-ess is hilarious!
Went to the Tavernacle and our bartender chatted with us about everything and anything. As out of towners from California, we loved it. She discussed Salt Lake City's population demographics, economic growth, and future trends. I know...not your typical bar talk...but we just had to know more about the city, the Mormons, and what everybody is up to.
She even helped arrange us a taxi. Hm...were we that drunk? Well, we were talking pop. demographics...
POLYGAMY PORTER (the wives recommend it)! CHASING TAIL ALE! PROVO GIRL! Too good. GET IT?!
I can't believe one of my all-time favorite bars is in Mormon central. I love how this bar plays on the name of the Mormon building "Tabernacle", of the "Tabernacle Choir" (which incidentally I went to see rehearse one night before I came here. Ha!)
When I went to visit Salt Lake City recently, I went to this place 3 nights in a row. I had to purchase a temporary membership to the "social club" to get in. It was worth it (only $5).
The main reason I like this bar is because they have live music: dueling pianos! People request songs and the 2 musician/singers do their best to accomodate you. I like their saloon-type songs and their rendition of "Baby Got Back"; so freaking hilarious to hear the opening bass-line on the piano! I loved it when the musicians would call on us, "The TaVernacle Choir", to sing back up for them. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT.
The beers on tap are from a local brewery. Who would have thought that Utah has great beer?! And they have funny names.
Check out this bar if you're in the area; you won't regret it.
I have to agree with recent poster. This place was fun and cool a year ago. Currently it is the hot place to be. Its gotten so crowded and over trafficked its ridiculous. The tables are sticky from split beer because they are too slammed to deal with those types of problems... when the fad dies its former glory will be restored.
The Tav is fun, for the first time you go... And maybe the second and third. And then you hear the same songs requested every time and the same people and the same crowd. Someone is always having a birthday or bachelorette party and its the same thing every Friday and Saturday. If you're just going for fun, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday with friends and then it is fun because the crowd is small and you can request nearly anything. It's much more laid back and enjoyable.
Great bar especially if you don't like smoke. We usually come for dueling pianos, and to watch the couple old drunk guys dance with each other, but any night is good company.
First of all...love the name of this place. This was the first bar I visited in SLC, and the fact that you had to pay to get in was a new concept to me (but so were state-run liquor stores). We didn't have a table reserved and they ushered us right in anyways. It was busy and loud and rowdy and I loved it! You can request songs for the dueling pianists to play, and they sometimes call the requester up to sing. The atmosphere is fun and the bartenders are cool, parking is easy and everyone is just having a good time! Highly recommended!
The other reviews adequately describe the upsides of this place. If you don't mind places that are so crowded that you regularly get elbowed in the back and cannot sit, and so loud that you cannot hear yourself drink, you might like the Tavernacle. I do mind, so I didn't like it.
A good time! It would be a good place to go with your friends, sing along with pianists and not feel like you are in a karoke bar. This place has a full bar so you can get your buzz on and have an even better time. I would make sure to arrive early with a group since seating is limited and this place gets full very fast!
