One of The Taco Shop At Underdog's' Favorite Reviews What's This?
this is the best taco ive ever had. no lie. the carnitas taco, add some of the red salsa, is so perfect. its a soft tortilla on the outside, crunchy on the inside, and just loaded with perfection on top. the carne asada is also good, i just happen to like carnitas better.
also had a pretty damn decent margarita here as well...they have a good selection of agave. definitely coming back here for some mexican breakfast and college football some saturday morning...whos comin with me!?
A year later and this place hasn't lost its stride. The house margarita is now $6.50, but it's a fine fine drink. My favorite food item is still the carnitas taco.
I couldn't care less about the NFL, but I do love to come here once in a while on Sunday mornings while a friend of mine watches his beloved Steelers. It's my excuse to have Underdog's fantastic pint-sized Bloody Marys.

My buddy lives just down the street from where I'm staying and insisted that we meet up for a beer to catch up. There wasn't very many places open so late at night so we ducked into Underdog's for a brewski.
I tried to order a snakebite, but unfortunately the bar only had cider in the bottle. Not wanting to have to buy both beers and building my own, I opted for just the cider. As expected, it was as good as you would expect, a feat that the bar itself had nothing to do with. While we didn't order any food, we were served some warm chips and salsa with our beers. I liked that the chips were warm, but didn't like that the waitress had dumped the salsa on top of the chips and making them soggy to eat.
As a place to kick back and enjoy a beer, Underdog's is pretty good. It's definitely a dive, but if you want to go to a place that's unpretentious and gets the job done, this place is as good as any.

Finally, i set up direct deposit with them to avoid the paper trail. These people have extracted my nomadic soul and somehow have me playing electronic quiz games amidst the punishing sports dreck to sample the unyielding freshness of their perplexedly elevated foodstuff. Its tapered in a unrepentantly sleazy format, execution, stance and medium. And......i just can't stop.
Chips. Pica. Veggie. Then Baja. Purgatory.
I really like this bar. We serendipitously found it while on a Saturday afternoon jaunt on Irving, and were seduced by the screaming football fans and Atari games/dining tables. (We sat at Ms. Pacman. I totally bit it.)
The place was completely slammed, but the service was really good. I have no idea how, but our waitress was on top of everything, and super friendly.
We of course had to try Nick's tacos, and they were just...ok. I was so surprised, because everyone I know raves and raves about them.
I had the grilled fish tacos, Nick's way (crispy and soft tortilla, wrapped around grilled fish, red onions, cabbage, and a sprig of cilantro), and it was actually really bland. I added a bunch of their smoky red hot sauce, and that did help, but on the whole, I was disappointed by how little flavor the actual taco had.
Maybe Nick was having an off day?
When venturing outside of Inner Sunset, be sure to get tacos.
Truth be told, I didn't get the tacos, I had the chicken nachos, which were both inexpensive and plentiful. In fact they will be my first leftovers since the move. To boot they serve great house margaritas rimmed with salt (why is salt so great on glass rims?). But the best part of the whole experience... Mexican Coca-Cola. Delicious, sweet, refreshing Mexican Coca-Cola. In a glass bottle!
My fellow diners enjoyed the tacos, of which they are regular fans... but if you really want a lot of food, I can't recommend the nachos enough.

MmMmmM. The tacos Nick's Way are delicious and ingenious. I wish I thought of this idea!
The alcohol selection is good. I liked the seasonal Oktoberfest beer I got. I love the chips and salsa- I would ask for the salsa on the side because the chips get soggy at the end of the basket. I also really like the red sauce they have. Creamy and a bit smoky. I usually use like a quarter of the bottle. (Yes, I do love sauce.)
Come here with friends and watch sports!
I served a 16-year sentence in Los Angeles that, despite all its detractors, offered some very special Mexican food from many different regions of that wonderful - now somewhat dangerous - country. Whilst my search for great Mexican food in San Francisco is an ongoing process, I must write that The Taco Shop At Underdog's is truly special in this city.
First off, I wholeheartedly recommend that you sample all tacos "Nick's Way". Yeah, a taco wrapped in two tortillas - inner crisp; outer soft - might be caloric and over the top but it makes sense and is delcious. I adore the carnitas and baja tacos. Oh, did I mention the corn that would be delcious on its own but it's then taken to another place by rolling the corn cob in some sort of cheese.
I've only enjoyed many a lunch at Underdog's but I'm sure their tacos and corn are super no matter what time of day served.
Do not miss this place!

Great tacos - Nick's way - it comes with 2 tortillas - one crispy and one soft on the outside. Love the concept of a taco shop and a bar mixed.
The service was way too attentive though - they got on the annoying side. There were 2 different servers coming by every 30 seconds (-1 star).
If you just want food - I'd suggest just taking the food to-go.
Running just as fast as we can. Holding on to one another's taco?
Fleeing the crowds of Hardly Strictly, I was in desperate need of a burrito or similarly satisfying comfort food and my poor hungover friend needed a bloody mary. Her suggestion, much to my delight, was The Taco Shop at Underdog's. Close to the park, affordable and booze worthy, it was the perfect spot for an afternoon bite.
The bloody mary's were impressive. Spicy, potent and containing a small vegetable garden skewered on a toothpick, they hit the spot. Unfortunately, the followup fell flat when I discovered they don't sell Fat Tire and they only have Anchor Steam in bottles. Sad.
The fish taco, nick's way was delicious. Crispy and soft at the same time, with well-seasoned fish and loaded with cilantro and guac, I loved every bite. I was oogling the nachos the people next to us ordered and I've resolved myself to tackle those on my next visit. I haven't been to Nick's Crispy Taco's yet (I know, GASP), but I hear this is where the better half headed post-split.
Minus one star because they forgot to bring me the corn on the cob smothered in butter, cayenne pepper and cojita cheese I ordered and then charged me for it. I was really looking forward to it. They were quick to correct the mistake and the silver lining is now I have another reason to go back. Well, that and the nachos.

These tacos are rad. One may say that $4.50 for a taco, or two tacos for $8.50 is ridiculous, yet take my word, these tacos are well worth the extra dollar or two you will pay.
For starters, all ingredients including the meat are local and organic, and the fish is wild.
Secondly, order your taco's 'Nick's Way," and your ingredients are placed inside a crispy taco shell with a soft, warm tortilla on the outside.
Thirdly, to top off the taco a large amount of freshly made guacamole is served on top.
Whether you choose the battered fish or pork as the main ingredient, you will leave satisfied and realize the extra dollar coming out of your wallet was well worth it!

The Taco Tuesday at Underdogs is definitely happening. And what a deal it is! 3 tacos for $3....try one of each- chicken, carne asada, and carnitas!
I also enjoyed my margarita, on the rocks, no salt. It was strong, hence, why I enjoyed it. No effing around.
What I did not enjoy: the three separate groups of young, cute guys (or so I thought....how unfortunate) that tapped my friends and I on the shoulder to inquire about getting our table as soon as we finished eating. It wasn't even that crowded. AND, when we did get up and leave, two guys got in a fight over the stupid table. Deep breaths, people. Calm down. I'M A LADY. Puhleeease. It's Taco Tuesday, for crying out loud.
Don't forget the guacamole.

These tacos hurt my teeth!
And, if you think that's awkward for me to admit, you should have seen how awkward I looked while I sat at the bar contemplating how to fit this taco into my mouth.
Biting straight down felt like a dental procedure, so I decided to turn the taco sideways and pull out the big guns - the molars!
Unfortunately at this angle the taco no longer fit into my mouth,so half of the taco ended up on my face, and thanks to gravity, the other half ended up on the ground.
The taco itself was tasty but it wasn't worth the effort. I understand that part of this was user error but eating a taco shouldn't lead me to musing about UI design.
The atmosphere of the bar itself wasn't really my thing. Underdogs is a straight up sports bar, so people are constantly yelling and getting agitated about things they can't control, and glowing with pride over things they had absolutely nothing to do with.
At least the server was really nice and attentive. He had the forethought to put an entire stack of napkins in front of me. Smart dude.

I came back a few more times. The quality of the food has decreased. Also their guacamole dip is a smaller portion now! That is also not cool. I ordered their catch of the day fish taco, and it was disgusting. It was mahi mahi and it had a disgusting smell. I sent it back and the server was cool with that.
I would only come here for drinks.
Service is still good.

The chicken and carne asada crispy tacos "nicks way" are delicious.
The environment is kinda fun friends/family type atmosphere with flat screen tv's for sports, arcade games, and picnic tables all at a bar. There are tables that also double as old school pac man games. So yea there are highlights.
The burritos taste like the chimichangas you would get at the school cafeteria. There's also the Mexican "street style" tacos which were mini tacos with shredded pork, chicken, and beef (though the beef wasn't shredded). The beef was "okay", the chicken was a little worse though it was "not bad", and the pork was awful. I didn't even finish it.
Everything is also ridiculously over priced. $4.50 for a taco, really?
Three stars---atmosphere+ games + crispy tacos
minus two stars--other food on the menu + pricing

I might unintentionally become a sports fan because of this place!
Seriously the best quesadillas and tacos I have ever experienced. The service is usually fast, and the atmosphere is comfortable. No one is dressed to impress. The servers are all friendly and hard working
Whenever you are in Golden Gate Park it is a must stop. Every person I have brought there loves it. But don't let my review build up your excitement too much, just go eat for yourself.
Plenty of seating, sports everywhere, men everywhere, and good prices on amazing food. Very casual.
I've never had Nick's crispy tacos, so I was intrigued to try out Underdogs and have them "Nick's Way".
First of all, I'm not a sports bar kind of gal. Maybe back in my college days, maybe when it's the only thing nearby with booze, but it's not my first choice. The space is big though, great for groups and fairly cheap. It's great pre, post and during hangover food as well.
That being said, we came with a semi-large group. The waitstaff was friendly, but not very organized. After having our orders taken, some of us didn't get our food for 45 minutes, while others had theirs in about 5. Tacos should never take that long, and especially before 7 on a weeknight. It was just awkward.
When my taco finally arrived I was a little underwhelmed. It was kind of like the Taco Bell Gordita. Basically, it's a soft taco, with another crispy shell. There's your secret. I had one pork and one chicken. Nothing blew me away and I fear I won't feel the need to trek back out to the outer sunset again. The guac was good though!
The house margaritas were dandy, but I did feel a bit guilty with my foul mouth and food and friends while oh, 3 families surrounded us with their tribes of kids and strollers. I'm old fashioned, I like to drink and keep the kids at home. Call me crazy, but it just added to the less than stellar tacos, long waits between drinks and the screaming babies...these things do not a good night make for me.
Had it not been for the friends that I love, the good company and nice family friendly feel of Underdogs (thank god there was a minimum of men screaming at the tv's) I might be scarred for life. It is what it is, but it ain't for me. If I was a sunset local or had a fam, I'd come here for sure, but since I'm not, oh well.

We went there before Nik got involved, and the place was pretty bad. But now that they have some tasty tacos and the like to offer, I think the place is taking a turn for the better. Hard to go wrong with a taco the Nik way.
Also a good place to grab a bite before heading into GG park.
Underdog's has always been a solid spot for Happy hours and for hanging out watching a Niner, Giants, or Warriors game over a brew or two.
Most recently, Underdog's was cool enough to let us hold our Fantasy Football draft there. http://static.px.yelp....
We took up a couple tables as it was a 12 team draft but what I really appreciated were that the waitresses weren't pushy with having us order stuff. I mean seriously, it's a money league and the last thing I need is to do my draft drunk and pick Alex Smith while Drew Brees is still on the board and win the toilet bowl again. http://static.px.yelp....
They are even family friendly. http://static.px.yelp....
Even though the tacos aren't Mexican taqueria style they are still good. http://static.px.yelp.... t One of the previous times I was here they a pretty good loco moco plate. I'm not sure if they still offer it but I'd recommend it.
I've came here when they first opened and I'll continue to come here. I guess you can say they've went from Underdogs to one of my favorites.

Letting Nick take over the menu at Underdogs is just what the doctor ordered for what I personally felt was a dismal previous attempt at bar food.
Thus, changing the name from "Underdogs" to "The Taco Shop at Underdogs" is 100% on the mark.
Why?
Nick knows tacos. Knows tacos like Bo knew football, baseball, and Nike endorsements.
Ordering a taco "Nicks Way" is like ordering your tacos "dorado" at
La Taqueria.
I highly recommend the Tacos de Pescado "grilled" and "Nicks Way".
It's how I would imagine Tacos de Pescado if La Taqueria offered Fish Tacos.
Whatever you choose, and it won't be a wrong choice if you have tacos...
Do not forget to ask for the Habenero salsa.....
Fire in, lava out.
Mmmm Mmmm Bitch!

Same idea as Nick's crispy tacos: I do NOT get the fascination with this place.
At least Nick's has cheap beer. $1 tacos was really nice, even though I would NEVER pay full price for them but the $4 beer put me off to staying longer.
The carne asada is pretty plan and lacking in flavor compared to other tacos I have had. As a disclaimer I live a block away from Nick's on Polk and work in the Mission so I have a fair amount of experience with tacos in the Mission and my native LA so I have pretty good idea of what I'm talking about here.
Honestly, go to any taco truck especially La Tonayese out in front of best buy and any day of the week, not just tuesday, you can get $2 tacos that will blow you away.
On the plus side it is pretty spacious, the servers were attentive and nice and there is a Supershot basketball machine that I used all night.
Definitely not a bad experience by any means, just painfully average and way too much hype with both of the Nick's place. I think Nick's places would benefit from recruiting someone off a taco truck and having them share some of the taco truck secrets. Just saying.

Best Tacos this side of Mission street and a great pit stop for a couple coldies after a surf down at Ocean Beach.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
Nick's Crispy Taco's are the BEST Ever!!!! I love the crispy taco with the soft tortilla around it, I love the guacamole, I love the carnitas and i love the fresh pico!!!!
I've never had a problem grabbing a table in back and I usually come with 5+ people!
I come here all the time! When I write it on my status on facebook status, this is what I always get- "Again?" "Is it really that good?"
Hellz yeah!

I expected an orgasm in my mouth when I took my first few bites of carne asada tacos done Nick's Way. The meat was full of flavor and juicy, there was plenty of pico de gallo and avocado too, yummy! While it was very tasty, it didn't make me totally weak in the knees.
My bf & I each had a carne asada taco & shared a carne asada quesadilla. It was HUGE & nice & crispy. Not that cheesy tho..hmm next time we'll get a cheese quesadilla. Love their orange colored salsa!
Service was really attentive as well, and this place (including the bathroom) is clean for a sports bar. Underdogs is the perfect college bar.

I love you, Taco Tuesdays.
I love that the Street Tacos are $1 including tax. I love that it comes fresh out of the kitchen in five minutes or less.
I love that a bucket of Tecate on ice is $15.
I love my friends for going early to snag a table.
I love the Giants fans all staring at the one or two screens in front of us, cheering against the Dodgers.
I love that I walked out full and happy while only shelling out $10.

people who work here are very nice. great place if you want to eat solo. all the salsa (red salsa is just like papalote's) you want!
I would like to state for the record that i would make a great spy.
I blend in with most crowds, and love to wear costumes/disguises. Give me one of those belts with shark repellent and I can destabilize a small 3rd world country.
What does this fact mean about my review?
Nothing... I'm just that confident in saying that if you give this place a shot, just one chance and i can guarantee you would like to come back. If you have a bad experience... well, please be sure to speak with any of the staff members in the property and they would gladly rape you with a dirty Godzilla Toy. That is all.

I went there to try the nachos, have a beer, and watch the Giants not score any runs. They didn't have Anchor Steam. I thought it was illegal to not have Anchor Steam in a bar in San Francisco. It isn't. But it should be a law.
They have lots of flatscreens which makes it great for watching the game. There is also a pop-a-shot in the back. I love that game. The nachos were OK. Full review here:
http://nachos.posterou...
I was still hungry after so I had a quesadilla too which was pretty good. Overall, I would definitely watch the game here, alas without drinking any Anchor Steams. But I would order tacos instead of the nachos.
Wow.
Best fish taco I've ever had? Wasn't expecting that to happen, but talk about an unexpected surprise. Beer-battered fish the way it's supposed to be done with the perfect complement of pico de gallo and guacamole. Yum!
Cool non-pretentious sports bar atmosphere that makes you feel like you're back in college. It gets busy here on weekends, but once you've got a seat, some tacos, and a corona, it's a little slice of heaven.

There are not a lot of things I wouldn't do for a Pescado Taco, Baja Style (beer battered), Nick's Way (soft tortilla plus crispy shell). I'd like to meet this Nick, because anyone whose way is this good deserves celebrity status.
Always amusing crowd - kind of to be expected at a sports bar in the Sunset - and the Margs can be hit or miss, but the $15 bucket of beer is always on.
Word to the Wise: If you're meeting a date here (because you're obviously the kind of girl whose only dinner on any of the first 3-5 dates involves something doused in beer, often yourself included), specify address. There's another Underbones a couple blocks up Irving. And I think that one's Vegan - so although it may be just as fabulous, it can give your date the wrong idea - namely, that you're not the kind of girl sitting at a bar up the street enjoying various egg-and-butter-basted meats. Which, naturally, you are.

pretty cool place, not as good of tacos as nicks crispy. Setup kinda sucks for watching football unless you can get a seat at the bar otherwise in the back kinda sucks. Aight place thou.
Nick (formerly of Nick's Crispy Tacos) makes amazing tacos! A work of art really. I'd almost go as far as saying Nick is the Michelangelo of our time in terms of sculpturing the perfect taco (sans the twig and berries like on Michelangelo's "David")
It's even worth going out of your way for just to try these amazing tacos done Nicks way.
Oh yeah, how can I forget to mention it's a bar and they serve booze too!!!

"Touchdown B-E-A-R-S!!!"
This is one cool place to catch College Football with its youthful ambiance, ten TV screens, video games, and floor to ceiling sports memorabilia. I was here last night to catch Cal thump Maryland in a lopsided season opener 52-13 as local product Javid Best rolled up 137 yards on just 10 carries. Front loaded with bar stools and tables, I was sitting at the end of the bar just right before the stacks of large picnic tables in the back. This sports bar is smallish when compared to others but the groups of people coming in and out to catch the game were persistent and spirited. Contrary to the paradigms experienced at many sports bars where boring burgers and artery clogging finger foods can be shortchanging and one-dimensional, their menu offers a full bar with an array of non-repulsive, quasi-authentic Mexican cuisine that was surprisingly likable and delicious.
My two grilled mahi tacos, one of which was done "Nick's Way", turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The regular taco ($4.50) had a good portion of smoky marinated mahi on top of double corn tortillas smothered with cabbage, cilantro and onions. These tacos were plump and fully stuffed. I thought the mahi was impressive with a smoky taste that complemented well with their green salsa. The Nick's Way ($5.50) had the same baseline ingredients with the addition of fresh guacamole and a fried tortilla to couple with a soft tortilla at the bottom. I'm not sure how the tortilla was fried, but it was nicely seasoned and tasted better than the regular taco. In addition, I thought their complimentary chips were addictive as it was served warm and nicely salted with a thick hearty texture layered with wholesome chunky salsa. My homemade honeydew fresca ($2.50) was sweet and refreshing. After realizing that their food was actually good, I was no longer surprised at seeing so many people coming in for take outs.
I had a great time overall. However, there were several limitations to the experience. First, they put the TVs on mute so I couldn't hear any commentaries and play by play analysis during the game. Second, aside from my server Sam, who was outstanding and personable, the other servers looked stressed out, unfriendly, and awkward to talk to. Price was high but I'm willing to overlook the limitations in exchange for an excitable menu and friendly environment to add to the experience of watching a game. They also have free wifi so I may have to bring my laptop here to hold my upcoming NFL fantasy draft. I've never given a sports bar more than a two stars review but here is a 4 stars experience as I plan to come back to follow my favorite Bay Area teams. Go Bears!
Thanks to B.B. and Earl G for the wonderful recommendation!

It recently came to my attention that I eat mexican food more often than any other type of food. I'm talking like probably three times a week, on average. You will rarely find me in a mood where I will turn down a taco (or a margarita for that matter). I did not know this place existed. I had been to the Nick's in the Polk Gulch a few times and naturally, I was a fan. My buddy who lives in the sunset posted something about tacos and beer in the sunset on her facebook and I was intrigued. Five minutes of research later the lady and I were on our bikes, heading into the fog. We got there and scored two seats at the bar. Important detail: It was a Friday at 5:30. We ordered some chips and salsa, the street tacos (hells yes, a variety platter of tacos, we decided we would pick our favorite and order it seperately, nicks way, see other reviews for details) We then ordered two margaritas. The bartender looked at his watch and said, oh, do you want to wait 5 minutes til they are a dollar? My red headed lady and I quickly made meaningful eye contact. Could it be, did he actually say what we think he just said? Yes. The margaritas are only one dollar between 6 and 6:30 on Fridays. And they make huge amounts and continue refilling as long as you are still standing. I think I had about 6? Maybe 8? Anyway. The tacos were delicious. We picked the carnitas to have Nicks way (it was moist and spicy) and ordered it at approximately 5:25. We think the bartender might have been enjoying some of the margaritas as well, because we had to ask about our taco about 45 minutes after we ordered it. He said he had put the order in, but we suspected he just didn't want to fess up. Anyway, it came about an hour after we ordered it, hence the missing star. When all is said and eaten, this place is in my top ten most frequented.
I have been completely satisfied with my experiences at Underdog.
First of all... the baja fish tacos nick's way... yummmmm! This is one of the best meals I have ever had! Good size portion, good price, and absolutely delicious!
Second of all... they offer happy hour prices all the time on draft beer for members of the Sports 4 Good league. It always feels good to save a dollar on a refreshing beverage!
I can't say I'm a huge fan of Nick's Crispy Tacos on Polk but Nick's more recent establishment is deff a hit in my book! Love the space (think cozy dive bar); the people - warm & friendly; uhhh and the food!! OMG the tacos BOMB! But even more B-O-M-B are the chips and salsa. The chips and salsa are to D-I-E for! Yum, yum, yummo! Oh not to mention, Nick, the owner, was rocking a Blue Bear School of Music shirt, my kind of guy! :)
Overall, if you haven't to The Taco Shop at Underdog's check it out! I know, I'll be back for shizzle :)

20 mins to get a table in the back.
30 mins to get someone to take my order
20 more mins to get someone else to clear off the stuff that was left on it from previous people.
30 more mins to get our order
a lil ridic no?
the food wasnt great this time either but i always leave really really full even though the burritos arent big... the must put some magic in there.
other times ive come here was okay. i like it when its not busy.
also, soemtimes i get the chips and salsa free, other time gotta pay.
what gives?
The Taco Shop is amazing! I work a block away and have to restrain myself from going every day (I did not intend that to rhyme)! Such good tacos, burritos and their quesadillas are yummy and mammoth.
The only thing I have gotten from here that wasn't 100% delish was their Taco Salad I got to-go - but that was mainly because they serve in a chinese style take-out container and everything just collected at the bottom. I am sure it is much better if you eat in and get it in a proper bowl.
All this talk about The Taco Shop...I am salivating and might go get it for lunch now!
Taco Tuesdays!
While passing by Underdog's one day, I felt my stomach get tickled with excitement seeing that Nick's tacos were now going to be offered there. To have those tasty little treats so much closer to me now than at Rouge...ooooo wheeee it was going to be good times! The Pescado Baja Style taco Nick's way is full of awesome tastiness and the Carne Asada Nick's way brings a smile to my face. Top it off with an order of chips and salsa (for only $1.50!) and a Pacifico from the bar and I am one happy fella.
Admittedly though, the tacos are bit pricy, but they are well worth it for an indulgence every now and again. However, come here on a Tuesday and you can a street taco (carnitas, carne asada, chicken with cilantro and onions) for $1.00 each. Seeing as how they are street tacos, they are pretty modestly sized, but they are a cheap way to fill up while leveling out your bill.
Now if they only started doing Taco Thursdays as well...
I heart Underdogs. A introduced me to Underdogs about a month ago. I can't for the life of me remember which taco I ordered, but I ordered it Nick's Way and it was really good. I'll probably never forget my first Underdogs experience because A, who ordered the street tacos, wanted me to try one of his, which I did. He somehow forgot that he had drenched it with habanero sauce and I absolutely cannot take spicy AT ALL. All I can say is, wow. Spicy.
I came back with Tony L. last week for my second visit and decided to order the street tacos. Smaller than a regular taco, but you get three! They were really good. Tony L. only put a drop or two of habanero sauce in his tacos but said it was plenty hot enough. I learned my lesson the first time. No habanero sauce for me!
