Neighborhood: FremontThis is a fantastic place! Great atmosphere and lovely staff who will put you ate ease. Sugaring is great and the results last a long time. It is uncomfortable (how could hair removal not be?) but the second they are done there is no pain and no redness. Just smooth skin! I really recommend the sweetspot for your hair removal needs!
First of all, let me just say that the Sweet Spot is great... BUT...
I have decided to go elsewhere because of their ridiculously long wait times for appointments. Last time, I had to wait 5 weeks between appointments (when ideally I like 3). They said it was because one of the employees was having surgery. She's now back-- it's Di Ann, and she's FANTASTIC-- but my wait time after my most recent appointment is 2 months. Seriously, nothing available for 2 months! So I'm going to try somewhere else.
Also, for those of you considering converting to sugaring from waxing: sugaring is nice but I don't know who these people are that say it's painless. Hair removal hurts, no matter how you do it. However, the fact that you're not having hot chemicals put on your face (or elsewhere on your body) is enough for me to stick with sugaring.

I just don't get it. Sugaring is not something that is at all painless. Anything that's pulls your hair out hurts, PERIOD. My problem when I went to The Sweet Spot was that it took FOREVER. 45 minutes for a brazilian as opposed to my waxer girl which never takes no more than 10 minutes plus sugaring is way more expensive. I'm sticking to waxing, it's quicker and that is more painless to me.

I am a Sugaring convert.
After years of waxing only when necessary, I am a proud monthly sugarer. Let's face it, ripping hair out of body parts you only see when the sun comes out is not exactly a pleasant experience anyway you cut it. Yet since I've started sugaring, I didn't know it was possible to look forward to such an experience. While it's not pain-free, the team at the Sweet Spot knows just how to do it so the pain is minimized. The process is extremely effective and with no "after-burn" like you experience with traditional waxing, it's enough to keep me coming back for more every month. Plus, I am red bump free and in-grown hairs are kept at bay. To put it briefly, this wallflower didn't know it was possible to want a stranger to peek in private places until I met the Sweet Spot!

I used to be a very consistent client at the sweet spot. I loved going to Erica and booked appointments monthly. However, their 24 hour cancellation policy is set up to drive away customers because sometimes you don't have 24 hours to call ahead and cancel an appointment.
Better yet they charged my card, for half my services, that I had on file for almost two years without even contacting me, and they wouldn't even consider reversing the charge knowing that my daughter was ill. I'm sorry but I'm not going to leave my two month old child, at the time, to get sugared. I would have rescheduled my appointment if only they had tried to contact me. Bottom line, I will never support a business that is run so black and white and a business that is definitely not customer oriented.

I didn't have the conversion experience I was hoping for and expecting due to the rave reviews on Yelp. It was a fine experience, cute little boutique-y feel with a nice waiting area and plenty to keep me occupied while I waited. The woman doing the sugar-ing was very nice, made sure to explain the process, and put me at ease.
It definitely was not as painless as these reviews led me to believe- perhaps my expectations were too high and I was expecting NO pain at all... but to me it really wasn't a whole lot different than waxing. Call me totally crazy, that's fine.

I am officially moved out of Seattle now, and I think it's one of the places I'll miss the most. The staff are delightful, real people who are more concerned with your comfort and hair-removal goals than anywhere else I've ever gone. And hair removal can definitely put you in a vulnerable position-- ahem.
The great thing about sugaring too is that I've noticed that it lasts longer than waxing because it more effectively pulls out the hair, plus its significantly more sanitary than waxing. They grab and make a sugar ball just for your session using Alexandria products (google if you like), are able to do the entire session with just that one ball, and throw it away. There's no double dipping like with waxing.
It is definitely hard to find as others have said, so what I would usually do is park in the street behind-- 35th, in front of the office building. Go half way down the block to park and you'll be in the right place to wander your way to the back entrance. Sounds sketchy, but if you end up making multiple visits, you'll figure it out eventually. Maybe that wasn't a helpful tidbit after all-- so hard to explain.
But for your first visit, it may be easier to go through the front. Give yourself plenty of time.
Oh, last thing I want to mention (but certainly not least) is that it is a small, independent, woman-owned, local business, so another great reason to support.

*Updated Review- 05/15/2008
So I've been getting sugared here since the beginning of January and each time I go in I become more and more disappointed with The Sweet Spot.
The wait times are ridiculous! The facial area I get sugared requires a ten minute appointment... only ten minutes people! Last time I went in and tried to book my next appointment it was going to take SIX weeks.... yes, SIX weeks... to get my next appointment (I usually get this area sugared about every 3-3.5 weeks). Mind you, I wasn't being picky and requiring a weekend or evening appointment either.
I loved The Sweet Spot, but they lost my business. It's great that they are doing so well, but I'm afraid they are pushing customers elsewhere. Everytime I'm in and others are scheduling appointments you can easily perceive their shock when they are told about the wait time for an appointment.

*Original Review- 01/04/2008 5 Stars
Yesterday morning I woke up with the waxing bug. I hadn't been waxed in quite a while and it seemed like a good day to get it done. So, I checked out Yelp and looked through the reviews for "hair removal" services. The listing for The Sweet Spot rose to the top and as I read the reviews and looked at their website I decided to give sugaring a try instead of waxing. It sounded kind of fun-- well, as fun as hair removal can be. I called up the salon and they were able to fit me in with a same day appointment. Yippy!
I had a little bit of a hard time trying to find The Sweet Spot, as it is down a staircase and out of plain site when you're driving by. After I parked and got out of my car to search for it I saw the sign leading me down the staircase.
The main waiting area/reception area is fairly small, but nicely decorated. The receptionist was very friendly, too. After waiting a few minutes the sugaring girl took me back to the treatment room and explained how sugaring works. Then, she proceeded to mold a big glob of sugar over the skin and pull it off. It certainly didn't feel good-- it felt like someone was ripping my hair out (duh!). And, from my previous waxing experiences it felt pretty similar. I don't think I'd say the pain was much less. But, the results were great and my skin was really smooth afterward.
Overall, I really liked The Sweet Spot. Although it is out of the way compared to where I live, I was so impressed I'm sure I'll return in the future.

One visit, and I'm a convert! DeAnn was super nice and very VERY thorough. I won't say what I had waxed, but I will say I kept my pants on. I've done both waxing and threading for years (Cher and I had the same threader, no lie), and sugaring rocks! I would agree it's about a 10th as painful as waxing.
I never had a problem with threading, but I can say with all my heart that sugaring is the way to go. It's no feather duster to the face, but it's the best way to go for hair removal, and I loved the whole vibe of this salon. I can't wait to go back!

When you walk in you kind of want to respect the calm, gentle vibe by acting this way yourself. Then you get in the room.... and it is getting ALL that hair down there gone. Which is something which can never feel good. I almost wished they had some music playing or something because its odd that any random person who walks into the waiting area can hear me tell my sugarer how painful and all other awkward convos that come with getting that done.... But it does hurt less than waxng, FOR SURE. The people are really sweet. The back hurts less than the front..... and maybe they should get full walls.... but if not thats fine, I'll still go back.

I have very sensitive skin that can easily flare up into a week-long painful problem (rashes, hives, ingrown hairs, random spots that really aren't acne or a rash). I've been going to the Sweet Spot for about four months and love it. Erica, Megan, and Dena (I think? She's the one that offers to let you eat the sugar) are all awesome and I really appreciate their friendliness as no one feels comfortable having -that- hair ripped out. I haven't met the owner, but if the employees are anything to go by, I'm sure she's just as wonderful.
Erica always makes me feel at home and really keeps my attention off of the process (I've actually fallen asleep on the table), even though there really isn't much pain. Because of the process, I'm finding that the hair is growing in much thinner, softer, and less overall. Sugaring isn't something I'm willing to give up any time soon, even if the price is a bit steep for every four weeks ($65 + tip for brazilian maintenance, $85 for initial), and if you skip the four weeks, you do have to pay the full amount. However, to get the baby smooth skin I desire, it's well worth it. Not only that, I can always walk out there comfortably and practically skipping.
Also, their space is really well set-up for relaxation. I find the open air cubicles to be nicely private, but still allow you to feel like other things are happening outside and people aren't just waiting for your screams of pain. I always get stuck in the fabric and the sliding door on my way out. The artwork is also quite interesting (especially the mishap with the piece in the room on the far right).
I'm so glad to have found a place like this! If only they also cut hair rather than removed it exclusively, then I'd be set.

So am I allowed to review this place even if I've never been "sugared" before? I'll say yes, and explain why.
Erica, Deann, Meghan, and Emily are all clients of mine. I hear them all talk about their jobs whenever they come in to see me. I know when people are really into their jobs or when they just tend to "show up". All of these girls are really into what they do. It's not just waxing they'll say, and then go in-depth about the benefits of why sugaring is so much better. These girls are talented, and they love what they do. I can tell, and I'd say that gives me the ability to YELP about it.

I will never, ever wax again and you shouldn't either.
Great service, super friendly (without being condescending ),cool location (3 blocks from me) and they know their shit...er, sugar.
$40 for a bikini wax is a bit more than I would like to spend but it's really worth it, alot less time and alot less pain.
WOOT!

I kept reading about sugaring all over the internet, and since I couldn't find a threading place here in Seattle, I decided to give sugaring a try. I had read on Yelp about Sugar Sugar (who's website totally sucks) and tried to call them because I live right down the street. Every time I tried to call I went straight to voicemail, which was very frustrating. I then tried to call The Sweet Spot. The receptionist was very friendly, and said they were booked up for like 3 or 4 weeks, but that she may be able to squeeze me in that evening. Now, I am a real baby when it comes to waxing, and I have sensitive skin, so more than likely, I break out every time. It has been 3 days since I got sugared, and I haven't broken out at all!! Plus, since the sugar mixture only adheres to the dead skin cells, so my redness did not last 4 hours like waxing always does! Lara is the woman who helped me, she was very friendly, and very well informed. Turns out she is the first to bring sugaring to Washington! Being that I myself am in the beauty business.. I had never really heard of sugaring until recently. I am forever sold, and will (hopefully) never wax again. It truly is an up and coming thing here in the U.S., they have just added sugaring to the cosmetology/esthetician curriculum within the last 3 months or so. While Lara was helping me de-hair, she told me all about the benefits of sugaring compared to other hair removal processes. I felt very comfortable in the space, though it was kind of hidden. These days, whenever you book an appointment for anything, be it a massage, hair appt. etc. you need to hold your reservation with a credit card, so expect that. The good thing is that they have a waiting list for cancellations, so if you don't want to put down a credit card, perhaps be put on the list? Not quite sure how that works, but there are always ways to beat the system. :)
Anyway, give sugaring a try for sure. I am totally sold.

After reading so many good reviews on here and desperately needing my furry, out of control eyebrows tamed, I scheduled an appointment. I've never been waxed before, so I can't say how sugaring compares to it.
What I do know is that since my pain tolerance is low I was bracing myself for the worst, but it ended up not being bad at all!! Rated, say, only "uncomfortable" on the pain meter, rather than "bite your lip so hard it bleeds."
The sugar goo that they use on you is very strange. For one thing, they use only a marble-sized portion of it for both eyebrows, but re-use it even with the plucked hair caught in it! That caught me off guard at first because it just seemed icky to re-use the goop. But it was all a-okay since my eyebrows turned out perfect!
DeAnne kicked their ass into shape and they're the best and cleanest they have ever looked in my life - I'm sure they were rowdier/ bushier when I was born. Thanks mom and dad, for the European hairiness.
Anyway, if you end up making an appointment here, beware because it can be hard to find. It's down a staircase between two restaurants on 36th.

I was sitting in the funky little basement studio of The Sweet Spot eyeing the little golden blob the esthetician was holding between her fingers.
Me: Is that what you are going to use to wax my eyebrows?
Sugaring Gal: Yes.
Me: Is that really made of sugar?
Sugaring Gal: Yes, do you want to taste it?
Me:
*horrified look*
umm
*curious look*
ummm
*thinking better of it look*
ummmm
No thank you.
Yeah, it's kind of crazy; they actually use sugar to wax instead of wax! So it hurts less because the sugar only pulls on the hair and not on the skin. It's a bit more expensive than your typical waxing place but really can you put a price on pain?
And more important than pain is the shape of your eyebrows - these girls totally get it too. Just stop plucking immediately and they'll work out a plan for how to make your lopsided disastrously plucked since Jr. High brows into something that starts approaching symmetry.
I just don't think you should eat it : - /
Update:
I've been going here faithfully for a year and was late to one appt and they charged me for half a visit and wouldn't reschedule me until weeks and weeks later. I love going my sugaring gal but thought this was very petty.

I've been waxing for years and never saw anything wrong with it until a coworker of mine introduced me to the world of sugaring. She swore up and down it hurt less than waxing. Really? I mean, they're still ripping your hair out by the roots, so how could it hurt less? But she was right. Somehow it hurt less. I guess it's partially because it doesn't stick to your skin, and partially because they rip the hair in the direction it grows, not against it, so you're essentially just pulling it from its socket, if that makes sense. Don't get me wrong - it still does hurt, especially your first time! But it does get better the more you do it, and I love that it's so much more sanitary than waxing because they aren't "double dipping" into the pot.
Oh, and I was offered to taste the sugar as well, but politely declined. :)

A cozy spot, with welcome amenities and very pleasant workers. Though certainly not un-painful, it was quick and easy, and I'm thrilled with the results! Will definitely be returning.
After giving the waxing a shot (see Wax On review: http://www.yelp.com/bi...) I figured I would try sugaring for my next tattoo arm prep and went into The Sweet Spot to have both arms "sugared".
Pluses:
- The studio is quiet and comfortable, if a bit tricky to find.
- The staff is really friendly. They offered me some water when I got there, and they're very informative about the whole process (kind of like a little lesson in hair health).
- You can EAT the sugar goo... I don't know how big a benefit this is to most clients, but it made me chuckle.
- Everything is very clean
- I've received excellent service no matter who I saw, from newbies to the owner, everybody knows what they are doing.
Neutrals:
- The process was more time consuming than waxing, but I felt it was more thorough, not time wasted.
- My experience was no more or less painful than waxing, it was pretty much the same amount of pain (not unbearable, but not exactly pleasant).
- I had no more or less ingrown hairs in the weeks following treatment. Pretty much the same as waxing, even following their exfoliation advice (4-5 per arm... I think I'm just prone to them).
Cons:
- None really, it's just a bit more expensive than waxing (and that is really just for my arm treatment, most of their other prices are comparable). Even so, it is worth paying a little extra to get a job well done.
I've had a chance to get both waxed and sugared a couple times now and compare the two. I have been extremely happy with the consistency and quality at the Sweet Spot.

I had my eyebrows sugared for the first time last night. I wasn't sure what to expect and was actually kind of scared. I'd been waxing them for years but looking to try something new. I tried threading and it wasn't for me, I was hoping sugaring might be.
As someone else has stated the place it kind of hard to find, it's down some stairs between two restaurants once you see the stairs it's a piece of cake. The place is super cute and very Fremont inside the art if fun and hip and girlie, I liked it. The receptionist's were both very friendly and the puppy dog was super cute too.
My appointment was at 7:00 pm and I arrived a little early and sit in the waiting area for my appointment the first thing I noticed is you can hear what's going on in the two sugaring rooms. It was like a science lesson on hair follicles, rather fascinating and entertaining all at the same time. So I'm waiting and waiting and getting a bit upset my appointment was at 7:00 and its now after 7:00 one of the receptionists comes over and apologizes and informs me that the client before me was late. I'm ok with that if you apologize and explain to me what's going on no worries because one day I may be the late client. Plus the girl who was late came out and apologized to me too which I thought was cool.
It's finally my turn, I go into the sugaring studio, I get my own science lesson and she goes to work. The process is rather interesting and cool. The sugar they use looks like a sparkly gold blob and they put in on your skin and than peal/rip it off kind of like silly putty, at least in my head that's what I thought it was like. The process is less painful than waxing and 100 times less painful than threading plus 100 times more sanitary than threading, that alone deserves them 5 stars!
So far I'm loving the outcome I haven't had to pluck any stray hairs this morning that might have been missed and I'm not looking in the mirror with my head cocked to one side because I think my eyebrows are uneven. There's been no redness or tenderness because the sugar is not hot like wax its room temperature. The cost for eyebrows is around twice what I normally pay to get them waxed but you know what it's totally worth it the results are much better than waxing. Try it you'll like it trust me on this one.

I always wanted to see what a ball of delicious candy coated with my leg hair would look like.
It doesn't hurt that bad. I didn't have to bite down on a stick or anything. Probably it hurts more if you're getting Personal Hairs torn out, but I'm a lady so I wouldn't be making this review if I had to discuss Personal Hairs.

Finally! No more waxing girls!! A friend recommended sugaring to me and now I owe her one for sure. The Sweet Spot is a tiny little studio in Fremont that does an amazing job of removing all those unwanted hairs from here, there and everywhere. I liked: the prompt service (I hate when I have to wait and then be late to wherever else I am going). Friendly girl who was very knowledgeable and spent time instructing me on hair growth, etc. Hardly any pain compared to waxing! This is huge for me because i HATE waxing. But I now love sugaring. It removed more hair that waxing does, with less pain, less mess and was all around such a better experience than waxing. I will never ever go back to waxing.

yesterday i saw the light, yes sugaring is for me. it is about a 10th of the pain of waxing and visibly better for your skin. the sweet spot in fremont is definitely the place to get sugared. the staff are all friendly, knowledgeable and seem to really like their jobs. that's always a plus. you don't want someone all up in your personal space that hates what they do or where they work. if it's your first time they tell you all about the procedure and the benefits of it, they also ask if you want to taste the sugary substance (i declined). the sweet spot is clean and neat and totally comfortable. i will never wax again.

This place is great. Absolutely no complaints! I will never go back to waxing. This process is so much easier on your skin, it's amazing! They make you feel very relaxed and comfortable too. Anyone that currently gets waxed I suggest to switch! No hot wax, which makes me red as all get out, and waxing also causes breakout too. This sugar is so easy on your skin that you won't ever go back to waxing. I wish there were more sugaring studios it just makes so much more sense for anyone especially people with sensitive skin much like mine! It is truly incredible, and very affordable. Don't knock it until you try it!

The Sweet Spot- Sugaring Studio is the Northwest's first and premiere sugaring studio. We specialize in Brazilians for men and women.
Sugaring is an all natural alternative to waxing. We use a sugar paste consisting of sugar, lemon and water to extract hair. You can even eat it! Really, it's delicious!
Sugaring is more sanitary than waxing- there's no double dipping!! A single ball of sugar paste is removed from the pot and is used throughout the entire service- then it's discarded. There is no risk of cross contamination.
The sugar paste is not hot and doesn't stick to the skin so it's considerably less painful than waxing. Keep in mind you're still extracting hair so it's not necessarily painless.
Hair is extracted in the direction it grows not against it like waxing which means far less hair breakage and less risk of ingrown hairs.
Sugaring is NOT sugar waxing. The paste is molded by hand and with a flick of the wrist the paste is whisked off taking the hair with it.
Sugaring is truly a skilled art form. The mastery of sugaring requires special training, certification and lots of practice.
At the Sweet Spot we have dedicated ourselves to perfecting the sugaring process and excellent customer service.

Ok, if you are still waxing-stop now and go here. I waxed before and was not terribly happy. Ingrown hairs, redness, soreness and stray hairs. I went here and could not be happier. Not a trace left behind. It didn't really hurt like waxing and I wasn't bleeding everywhere either. They say that I shouldn't have ingrown hairs- we'll see about that, but as for now, I feel like a porn star.

The people that work here are about the nicest and friendliest people you could ever meet. Lara, who owns the Sweet Spot and is the lead esthetician, is very knowledgeable about hair removal and offers interesting conversation throughout the procedure, which helps put you at ease.
Sugaring is much less painful than waxing and the possibility of ingrown hairs is not as great. The prices are very reasonable if you are a regular client, meaning that you show up every four weeks for a sugaring. Waiting more than four weeks means more work for the esthetician, so as a result you'll be charged a little more, which makes sense to me. Procrastinating also means more pain for you, so it's an added incentive to stick to your schedule.
Their space in Fremont is very funky, cool and clean and there are nice doggies to pet. Highly recommended!

the sweet spot is a little difficult to find (a tiny sign between a thai restaurant and an indian restaurant) but is worth it once you head down those stairs.
the place has 3 waxing studios within; it is tiny, cute and very fremont. the staff are nice and informative. it's $25 for an eyebrow sugar, and $40-$85 for bikini waxes.
as for the sugaring itself, it is relatively painless -- especially compared to waxing. while it is a little painful when they are first applying the sugar and gently pulling the hair in the direction of growth before actually pulling it out. my skin is sensitive and i am prone to ingrowns. my skin stays red for hours and hours compared with the 1/2 hour, maybe an hour of pink.
i'd definitely give it a try. you have nothing to lose!
