8 reviews for The Suffolk
I had to do a double take before finally committing to enter the Suffolk. On first glance it looks like a church, and it could very well have been one, I never did get confirmation. The bar is in the back and the entry room at the time was being setup for an art exhibition that was going on the following day. To the right and left were some theatres, because this is also apparently the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center. Talk about your jack of all trades.
It's beer, wine, champagne and sangria only, and there happened to be an open bar for the particular event that drew me to Suffolk. There are some cozy chairs and a faux fire place, but the real draw seems to be the backyard beach. That's right, there is a beach , sans ocean, in the back. Unfortunately on this particular day the weather thought it would be fun to add some water and alas the "beach" was a muddy mess (Although I was told that this proved helpful when a few patrons decided to partake in some mud wrestling - I never said this was a classy event, ha). But it definitely looks to have some potential. I even saw half a dozen beach towels inside that looked ready for action.
I would definitely come back to check out the action on a warm and sunny day, however those days do seem to be getting fewer and farther between.
This place is decent. I djed a party here a couple weeks back and, besides the fact that I spilled beer on my equipment and the music ended at 1:30 (on a Saturday), this was a good spot. NOT great.
It's not like any other place I've been to in town though. It's really open, and it's kind of like Santos, I guess. Just smaller. But it's like being at a house party with a bar and a beach in the back yard (the 'water' to this beach is a parking lot). The guys working there was nice and the party was fun while there was still music. I'd say for something different, definitely check this place out.
GREAT for groups. Girls night out probably would rule at a spot like this.
Came here on a random night hangout and this place reminds me of surf bar in wiliamsburg, brooklyn. they have a man-made beach theme in the backyard. and a small area in-door.
For a perfect summer night.. this could be a cool place to hangout. The drinks here weren't so good. and it's more laid-back type of crowded..
They said they open during the day too. so it could be a good spot to come and tan. maybe I should check it out during the day.
I've been to the CSV for a few Rubulad parties over the years, but when did they put a beach bar here? According to the bartender, it's been there for 6 years, but I'm suspiscious. How the h*ll would I have missed it for that long?
It's a fun place, kinda smallish, but quirky and original. It seem to be full of groups of girls having birthdays for some reason. And the energy was funny, like you had gone for a hike in brooklyn and found an bar, and went to hang out in the garden.
There is an indoor part too which feels like an oddly designed living room.
The place is comfortable, but odd in a bunch of ways. I doubt I'd make it a regular hangout, but it's worth passing through, or doing a Sunday bbq here or whatever.
As I was walking on Rivington, I saw a sign for The Suffolk Beach Bar.
Being from Florida, I literally thought it was a joke. So I ventured to see what a LES beach bar looks like. The entrance is though an old dilapidated building covered with scaffolding. Once inside, there an immediate light which draws you to the back of the building - and Wha - LA!!!
A bar, tiki posts, lounge chairs, SAND, and a grill - all in a vacant parking lot. For beach bar in the LES - not bad!
The drinks were on the cheaper side (beer $3-5 and wine $6).
All in all I had a great time and cannot wait to come back with my friends.
Seriously the WORST bar on the LES. Dont waste your time here. The owners have no idea how to run a real bar. No hard alcohol, awful beer selection, terrible sound system, only one bathroom, and the whole place suffers from an identity crisis. The backyard beach is a truck load of sand in a disgusting back alley parking lot. Awful place.
Place has a bit of an identity crisis... but it's $3 beers, and not crowded on a Saturday night.
Just went to this place over the weekend for a cookout. It's a great free event space. You can organize your own little event for free and the idea is that your group will buy drinks from the bar. Although you don't have to come specifically for an event. It's cool to just stop in and grab a drink too. They have a "beach" just outside complete with sand, beach chairs, beach balls, music, a cabana roof, and a nice grill. The beach part has been sectioned off in an abondoned parking lot, but they've done a pretty decent job of making it feel cute and beach-like rather than parking lot like. The actual bar part inside is sort set up like a living room. The whole place is very laid back and makes you feel like you are on vacation. All in all I had a good time!
