The Still Point is wonderful. It is warm, unpretentious and calming. I feel like I am there to be taken care of in this gorgeous old house where everything just feels so zen. Really. Sarah at the front desk starts everything off just right.
Beth is wonderful for acupuncture. She explains everything, asks about and incorporates your physical health and mental well-being. I wish she would pop up magically at work or school when I am feeling negative.
I just a facial and waxing with Dewaynia and it was lovely. An earlier poster was right, she knows her way around an eyebrow! The facial was very simple yet my skin looked great. Normally if my face is not getting scraped, zapped or stuck with a needle I think facials are a waste of time. Not so with Dewaynia.
I had a 90 minute deep tissue with Patty over the holidays and it was swoonful. I slept for 2 days. It was painfully perfect which is exactly the way I like it.
The prices are reasonable and the online booking is fabulous. The only caution would be if you want to sleep/veg, go at night because the windows are huge and it is fairly bright in there.
I am not a crunchy sort of chick but this place makes me want to move to Takoma Park and never be unhealthy again. -

I'm not one that usually writes reviews online but feel as though I must let others know about my experience so they can judge for themselves.
I made a same date appointment at The Still Point wellness spa, for a 90-minute Swedish massage, at the Takoma Park location. Having never been there before, I went w/ the first available massage therapist, Patti.
Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by Rebecca, the receptionist, and felt relieved by the ambiance of the establishment. (FIRST RED FLAG) As I was introduced to my massage therapist and directed to my room, Patti told me that it was HER PREFERENCE that I completely undress and remove all undergarments. As I'm no novice to massages, I decided to just "go w/ it."
(SECOND RED FLAG) As the massage commenced, she exposed the entire right side of my body as she worked solely on the right lower extremity. This left me feeling cold due to the temperature gradient caused by half my body being covered by the blanket while the other was left bare.
(THIRD RED FLAG) Further along in the massage, I began to feel as though less and less attention was being paid to modesty and technique. As she seemingly finished one section of my body she would continue to another and then re-approach a previously worked section, touching and lingering in a way that was distressing. As she tugged on the blanket that was not securely tucked underneath me, I was left feeling uncomfortable and unrelaxed as thoughts that my private parts could soon be exposed.
I called the establishment some time later to express my concern w/ Lisa, the manager. She seemed very perplexed and apologetic over the incident and that my experience was not what I had hoped. She detailed how the massage therapist had 25 plus years of experience and although she had never had a massage w/ Patti she could relate to my questioning of the type of service I received. She took my contact information and stated that she would share this information w/ the owner of the spa and address it w/ Patti and get back to me. That was over two weeks ago.
So, here I am detailing my experience online for you all, feeling as though The Still Point doesn't need my business, and that's okay. My issue: A massage therapist should NEVER tell a client what their preferences are. Instead, they should tell or suggest that a client do, as they feel comfortable. Second, technique should make sense sequentially and be consistent. Explanations could put a new client at ease so that they don't have to wonder what the massage therapist's intentions are. Lastly, follow through w/ what you say you will do. Customer Service is what sets one business apart from the next. If anything the entire experience was creepy. -

Takoma Park, MD
I have had two Swedish massages at The Still Point recently. My first was with Bridgette and was fantastic! Quiet and soothing to the point where I could have easily fallen asleep. It was a 5 star experience.
My second massage was with Patti. Unfortunately this was less pleasant. As a previous reviewer commented, I felt that her style was less sensitive towards more modest types. She didn't ask me to remove my underwear (which I wouldn't have done anyway because it was that time of the month), but she shifted and pulled my underwear all over the place and did the same with the sheet. I got quite chilly towards the end from the sheet getting flapped around so much. I also thought her massage style was too aggressive for a Swedish massage - I probably would have loved it if I had wanted a deep tissue, but I was looking for relaxation. Instead of feeling relaxed enough to doze off, I was wide awake and uncomfortable. However, she was very polite throughout the massage and was professional, just with a very different style than I prefer. It was a 3 star experience.
I will definitely be going back for more services, but it helps to know which person to ask for who fits my personal preferences. I think it would be helpful if the receptionist provided some details about the massage therapists when you book so you know what you're getting. -

I got a pumpkin peel facial with Dewaynia, and the experience was soothing, tranquil, and filled with yummy scents and sensations. Dewaynia has tender hands and a melodious voice, her bearing perfect for the services she provides. She maintains an upbeat tone--none of the clucking and fretting about your skin you might find elsewhere that make you feel like a pocked old boot. She makes recommendations without being pushy, and really pays attention to your skin care needs. I would definitely go back.

I wandered into The Still Point last week because I happened to be in Takoma Park so I decided to check it out and see how crunchy it was. It was around 11 a.m., so it wasn't very busy and the owner gave me a full tour, which was very nice of her. Even though I didn't have an appointment, Carmen was able to squeeze me in for a bikini wax. I don't really have any complaints about her technique but I feel it was overpriced at $50. I usually go to Aveda and it's only $33 there.
Nonetheless, I returned the next day for a much needed massage with Carolyn (hey, it was my birthday week). I went for the 90 minute deep tissue, which I believe was $120. Not a bad price for an hour and a half. Carolyn was very pleasant and I felt very relaxed afterward. My only complaint was that the room was super bright. It was hard for me to completely zone out when I was face up. Still, I enjoyed the massage and will return when I don't feel like making the trek to Aveda in Bethesda. -

I had a deeelightful facial with Dewanyia last week. She even squeezed in a brow wax while I was there! I was quite impressed, having worked in the past at a high end Aveda salon. Dewanyia has a very good touch, almost intuitive, and her hands are strong with good energy. She was thorough and informative, professional but fun. Sade sang sultry tunes in the background as I drifted off in peaceful bliss under these skilled hands.
Dewanyia also explained thoroughly my follow up care, and recommended some fantastic products that would suit my course of treatment. I'm seeing her again in 6 weeks, eager to see this transformation through.
The desk staff was also quite helpful, competent, and kind. I also appreciated how each service provider who wandered through the waiting area looked me in the eye and said hello. Big plus. You can tell they're happy to be there. -

So shortly after I posted my review of The Still Point, the owner emailed me about it. She had taken the time to look into who had treated me during the Instant Bliss foot massage (the woman is no longer working there), and clarified some things about the acupuncture. Namely, that the info usually gathered during the new client intake session is gathered instead at future sessions, and that tipping is not indeed expected for acupuncture sessions.
She also invited me to return for a complimentary treatment, and I went for a CranioSacral massage with Brigitte. It was a lovely experience -- a very gentle and relaxing massage that I felt much better after. And there were no issues with confusion at the front desk.
So I think The Still Point deserves another star. Clearly I had some issues, but I also give huge props to the owner for taking responsibility for what happened, working to make improvements, and doing right by me as a customer. I'll be back.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I'm sad they got rid of their nail services but their skincare services are top notch. My Esthetician DeWaynania is very sweet and really does a good job. Her techniques are are so relaxing. I love that they care of the whole body and in a holistic way. I thought their products were overpriced but I've been working on the same $28 bottle of cleanser for 10 months and it's only half gone.

Probably about a year ago (time flies!!) I bought a Groupon for a Nutrition consult and I fell IN LOVE with this place!! On the day of my visit however the provider did NOT show up... (SHE made the appointment but did not tell them so it was not on their book...). This however gave me a chance to talk to the receptionist who was super friendly, relax and meet Dewaynia. I booked an appointment for a facial and WOW! The combination of her gentle touch, soothing voice, music and the scents of the products she used made for an amazing experience! She is extremely knowledgeable, eager to help and such an amazing person!
MY APOLOGIES TO YOU DEWAYNIA FOR NOT WRITING A REVIEW SOONER (as I had promised...)
I must also point out that they had fresh figs (from their own tree!!) and they were delicious! -

I won't try this place again.Comment from Tori P. of The Still Point 10/29/2009

I LOVE this place! I had a facial with Dewaynia... One week later, my skin looks so healthy and clear. After all of the facials I've had, no one has ever told me that I have dry skin and can benefit by using oil as my moisturizer. Dewaynia did. And I cannot believe the difference. The facial itself was so relaxing, I caught some zzzz's during it and awoke feeling refreshed and beautiful. They have a pretty nice natural product selection - buyer beware, very pricey. All in all, great experience, greater energy. I am so looking forward to my next spa day...

Hands down, Fanny is the best pre-natal masseuse out there. My visits during and after pregnancy to her have been wonderful. My husband thought she did a great job with his hot stone massage as well. I have also seen Bridgette when I wanted to go on a Monday - Fanny wasn't working - and she was very good.
Their nail services are so relaxing. The room has no oder of chemicals and it is very serene. Love that.
I recently had an express facial and it was very well done and relaxing.
In the past I have had problems with irritation and I had none at The Stil Point.
Lastly, I LOVE the Combat Ready Balm, I have used it on burns, bug bits and rashes and it is AMAZING. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it is sold by check in. Even better its made locally by one of the owners. -

This review is for the wax/epilation.
For how unrelaxing a wax is, it was great. [I'm going to slaughter her name... De-Way-Nia] had the least painful waxing experience I've had, explained all the benefits with waxing the axillary area, rubbed essential oils... unfortunately, I'll have to wax this area regularly to get the benefits. The environment is a clean, ethereal/whimsical spa and very friendly.
They charged $20 for axillary (armpit) epilation. They do have a 24 hour cancellation policy and require a credit card at time of booking. I tried to walk in and with waxing they have to heat up the wax first, so I couldn't get a slot when I came in... maybe if you come in later in the day? The area I went to was not wheelchair accessible, but maybe the lower portion of the spa is maneuverably accessible.
Will be coming again
Addendum: They moved to a very nice location a block or two away. Wanted to update that it wasn't wheelchair accessible. -

3.5 UPDATE: I returned to The Still Point for a manicure and pedicure. Pleasant, but not as delightful as my facial experience. The nail room (The Sole Door) is spacious and bright, and I got a heated pillow to put around my neck for each service. I almost slept through the pedi, I was so relaxed. Gabby, my aesthetician, got my hands and feet looking good. Why the drop to 3 stars? My toes look amazing and adorable, but she cut the cuticles on my hands so that a few days later, they look ragged and there are a few spots where she nicked me a little deep. I'm usually reluctant to get manicures at a spa because I feel like I can do them myself, and in this case I think I could have done as well on my own. But my feet look awesome, and my pedicure was totally relaxing.
I'd definitely return to The Still Point for skin care services, and I may try their massage or acupuncture services at some point, and maybe for another pedicure, but I could take or leave the manicure services.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I visited the Still Point at the new beautiful location right down the street. The new location is just as comforting as before, but now it's improved because all services are located in under one roof!
From the moment you step in and are greeted by Beth (wonderful receptionist) your relaxing journey begins. I waited on a big comfy couch while my esthetician, Dewaynia, finished with her previous client.
I was whisked back to the treatment room and prepared for my anti aging facial peel and eyebrow wax. The treatment bed was so comfortable I was afraid I was going to fall asleep...the sheets are AWESOME! Dewaynia spent a great deal of time listening to my very explicit instructions on how I wanted my eyebrows shaped, I am a bit of an eyebrow stickler. She was sweet and listened carefully. My eyebrows have NEVER looked better. The girl has a true calling for eyebrow shaping! I will never go to anyone else again...
I was then treated to a natural facial peel. She explained all of the "fruits and berries" that were in the peel she was using. I was so relaxed I was barely awake. I felt assured that no harmful chemicals were used during this holistic peel. While the peel was on my face she gave me a shoulder, neck and decollate massage. I asked if she was a masseuse; she said no, I told her she needed to be. She has amazing hands for massage. Maybe she'll reconsider?!
My experience with Dewaynia was amazing and I will never trust anyone else with my eyebrows again! She is truly a gifted esthetician. My face has never looked better and younger! The spa is serene and all of the employees make you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Oh, and Chesapeake Cheesecake next door is open and is worth the treat after your services at Still Point! -

I just tried Still Point for the first time yesterday. My back was killing me (oh, the woes of a desk job) and I was hankering for a relaxing massage. I got a last minute appointment with Nicole for a 60 min Swedish. I'm pretty new to the DC area so I didn't quite know what to expect of the area but it was quite cute. The spa itself looks like a country-style house with an inviting front porch. There was ample parking and the waiting area was very nice. They offered me some hibiscus tea (I've had plenty of this when living in the Southwest and this batch was pretty tasty too). Now let's get down to the details.....Nicole was awesome! She used the perfect amount of pressure (just enough to work the kinks out while still being soothing). I was very impressed. While getting my massage all I heard in addition to the music were birds chirping in the trees outside. I'll definitely be returning to Still Point for my next spa visit....what a nice little oasis!

I booked two appointments together for a friend and myself to go together for Instant Bliss Foot Massages. The treatment was fun - a foot scrub, mask (which turned out to be actually honey - interesting!) and a foot massage. Nothing too amazing - the atmosphere was busy, so it wasn't the most relaxing ever... no massaging chairs, either. However, the staff was nice, the service was lovely and it was a great deal for the money... not sure I would go back and pay full price, though.

I went to still point since I purchased the Groupon and I bumped up to the Holistic Cleaning Facial. I was whisked away by Adua to go for my treatment. Yes, you must walk out of the door and up a small hill to go to the treatments rooms for facials, manicures and pedicures. Although you begin the hike, you are easily relaxed as Adua discussed with my skin type and which products work effectively that I purchase for everyday use at spots like CVS.
The experience was fabulous. Adua gave me a Yogurt Berry Mask that smelled fantastic. My face looked so renewed. I will definitely go back for skin care services at Still Point! -

I visited The Still Point three times in the past two weeks. It's a place that I have been meaning to visit since Daily Candy touted their Acupuncture Happy Hour a few years back. Booking an appointment online was fairly easy. Their website has a slight bug in that it wouldn't allow me to add a credit card to my profile, so I had to call with a credit card to secure my booking. It's walking distance from the Takoma Metro Station. After having lunch at Mark's Kitchen, I crossed the street to The Still Point.
Upon arrival, I checked in, and a spa coordinator showed me the waiting area, otherwise described as the tea lounge. The tea lounge is about the size of a walk-in closet, and has a couple of chairs, a sofa, and a variety of magazines and books for clients to read while they wait for their therapists. I was told to fill out a consultation form. They usually offer one variety of tea in the lounge and it is tasty (they also sell it in the store).
After a couple of minutes, my therapist Nawal came and introduced herself. She led me to a room that was painted a serene blue with a Chinese lantern in the corner. She gave me some privacy as I disrobed and got on the table. This is strictly a place where you go and get services, but they don't offer amenities like locker rooms and bath robes. I had booked a 90-minute Swedish and Nawal was great. I did appreciate that she was more about the massage versus the chit chat, though working in the industry, I do love me some spa gossips. Also, I have never had my glutes worked on before and that hurt! Apparently that's what happens when you stand at your job all day. I left feel totally relaxed and ready to tackle on Spa Week at work. The price for the massage was $115, and I had a $50 SpaFinder gift certificate that I've been hoarding for like two years. (To all spa guests: please please always tip your therapist based on the original treatment price even if you are getting a discount on services!) Their retail area had a lot of bath and body items that I had been meaning to buy, so I bought a lot of stuff, too.
The following week I scheduled a facial with Adua. I had a Groupon that was $25 for an Express Facial (valued at $50), which I used to upgrade to a 60-minute Deep Cleansing Facial ($110). Adua was fantastic. It was during my second visit that I realized that they had a bathroom, and also that the decor/theme of the treatment rooms are inspired by countries like Bali. The facial and nail rooms are located upstairs. To access this area, Adua led me back outside, around the corner and through the front of the building. Now, this spa is located in an old building and when the winds are 10-20mph, the whole place shakes. And Norah Jones doesn't drown out the truck outside.
Spas usually price their facials two ways: usually the more expensive it is, the more pampering you get (scalp massage, neck/shoulder massage with hot stones, hand/foot massage, etc). If it's fairly inexpensive, the facial is only focused on the face area, and they will get you with add-ons (enzyme peel, hand/foot massage, glycolic mask, etc will all cost extra). Unless you get the Luxe Facial, your facial here will only on the face and neck. I received a facial cleansing, steam/extractions, Manuka honey mask, and hand blended (local) yogurt mask with a blend of mixed greens superfood powder. There is also a little bit of high frequency therapy, which is interesting. It crackles and pops like Rice Krispies and feels like each zit you have gets a jolt of static shock. The currents zap the bacteria on the surface of the skin and is supposed to help with acne. Aside from a bit of discomfort from the high frequency treatment, this was a very relaxing facial. Loved the vigorous facial massage at the end, too. Adua was very engaging and informative about ingredients and skincare, and we did a bit of spa talk. Apparently the person who trained her on nails developed the nail program at my spa years ago. It's like six degrees of Kevin Bacon, spa style.
Later on, I went to Whole Foods to buy Manuka honey to do my own mask at home and was shocked to discover that a jar cost FIDDY DOLLARS! Now I definitely appreciate the thought that goes into the facials at The Still Point. Will definitely be back.Listed in: Wax Ecstatic, Relax & Rejuvenate: Spas

Frostburg, MD
I love this place. The new location is so much more spacious and whole than the old one, that it had a positive mental effect when i entered. I got a facial from Sarah, who is expert at her job, and has a whole thriving business of her own (Skincando). My facial was from a Groupon offer, so I might have expected it to be bare bones, but it was quite luxurious and leisurely. Sarah talked to me about my skin concerns, identified these mystery whitehead-looking things that had recently appeared around my eyes (they are milia, and come from using too much product around your eyes). She offered to extract them and didn't even charge me for it. I don't have very good insurance, so I had not been to a dermatologist to find out what they were. If I had, they would have charged me a couple hundred dollars to do what Sarah did in two minutes for free.
She had some good ideas for what would be the best products for my skin issues. I ended up leaving with quite a load of goodies, but I trusted her judgment, and I'm a sucker for products anyway so I knew I'd end up spending major bucks. But she gave me a 10% discount, and a free sample of her apparently world famous Combat Zone Balm. She sends it to soldiers in the Middle East to help with harsh conditions there (flea bites, heat, wind), and has received a lot of press for it.
It's just so rare to go someplace and be treated like you are special, like they are really thinking about what the best solution would be. And I love that it's all organic, so I don't have to worry about anything they are using. I've also had a pedicure there, and it was very nice. Soon I will be trying acupuncture.
The bottom line is this: in a town (Takoma Park, and to an extent DC as a whole) filled with mediocre, amateurish establishments, The Still Point stands out as a genuinely first-class business, run by people who know what they are doing. I'm moving into the city in a couple weeks, and I think not being near this place is the only thing I will regret about it. Of course I will continue to make the trip out to TKPK to keep using their services. -

I regularly receive acupuncture treatment at The Still Point, and I have also had a facial and massage.
I LOVE the atmosphere at The Still Point - they have a very comfortable and semi-private waiting area with fresh iced tea and lots of books/magazines. The treatment rooms are pleasant, well decorated and comfortable and I was pleased with both acupuncturists with whom I work (Charles and Kirsten).
My massage was great, I worked with Glenda and she was very professional and addressed the areas that I had pointed out as needing extra attention. She often has specials on her massages so just keep your eyes open and choose your treatment times wisely.
The facial I got here was actually the first facial I have ever had, so I am not sure how it compares to other facials. I enjoyed it, though I got the facial during spa month when it cost $50. It is usually $70 or $80 and I don't think it would have been worth it for full price. The esthetician was nice but a little too informal for my tastes - to me she seemed unprofessional in the topic matter she discussed with me, as a client.
Finally, in terms of price I suppose it depends what you are used to paying. Different therapists often have deals going on, so you can get the same services for less money. The acupuncture is well priced, especially if you pre-pay for a pack of sessions (then they give you a discount). -

I had an appointment for an Express Facial (30 minutes) with Sarah on a Friday afternoon. I purchased a Groupon for $25 and upgraded it to a full 60-minute facial when I called to make my appointment. It was my first visit to Still Point and I was pleasantly surprised when I was greeted upon entering the small store room and offered a cup of tea. I was running a little late (10 minutes) which worked out because Sarah's last appointment ran over. The associate that greeted me apologized for the wait and explained that Sarah sometimes ran over with her clients (which would be a benefit for me if she gave me a few extra minutes during my appointment).
The associate (I think her name was Beth) brought me upstairs to meet Sarah who was very nice. She offered me a seat while she took her previous client downstairs. I thought that this personal service was very nice. The shop is located in an older building. I liked the mix of modern and traditional style. When Sarah returned, she showed me into a room when I got more comfortable for my facial.
The entire experience was lovely. Sarah asked about my skin and explained what products she was using on my face. She gave me a $30 mask for free (an apology for being late) and also threw in a neck and shoulder massage. She only left me alone for about 5 minutes (I think that was to let the mask dry) but at all other times was completely attentive. In fact, even though I was extremely relaxed and enjoyed my refreshing facial, the time flew by during my treatment; I almost did not want to get up and leave. My skin felt rejuvenated when I was done. Sarah walked me downstairs and gave me recommendations on what skin products to use for my skin. She was not pushy at all but offered me a few organic products that they sold at the shop. I bought a few and was given an additional 10% off. I will definitely treat myself to another facial in another 6-8 weeks, especially if they have promotions (I am a law student and times are tough). -

I purchased one of the groupon facials and Dewaynia was my Esthetician. I've never had a facial before so didn't know what to expect but she was very informative and talked me through everything that she was doing!
My only regret was that I didn't upgrade to a longer facial, it was over so quickly!
Afterward Dewaynia showed me the products that she had used on my face in case I was interested in purchasing them.
All in all it was a great experience and i'm very interested in going back to try some of their other services. -

I have had great experiences with all of the services I have received here. I first came here because I was really interested in finding somewhere that did non-toxic nails. They use Priti nail polish which is non-toxic and I really wasn't expecting it to last that long for that reason. But after my pedicure, that stuff stayed on forever! Not only that but my pedicure looked perfect when I walked out of there and I was really pleased at the job Annie did. I have been back to her since that first time and the experience was the same. I also just had a facial with Dewaynia and I felt that she listened to the concerns I was having with my skin and told me at each step of the process what she was doing to combat those specific problems. It was both soothing and then energizing to walk out of there with a fresh face that looked immediately better after some attention. Angela did brow grooming for me that day as well and while I only required a clean-up, she still asked me to let her know if there was anything I wanted changed. As it happened I liked them how she had them, but I appreciated that if there had been some changes I wanted, she would have honored my request.

I had a facial and a pedicure by Adjua (hope im spelling her beautiful name correctly!). HIGHLY recommend going to see her. She's amazing, smart, thoughtful and a very skilled technician. I live in Takoma Park DC and had not yet been to the Still Point. Its fantastic and anyone looking for a bit of pampering in a very cool and soothing environment with earth friendly products, this is THE place to go! FORGET those mainstream spas - come to takoma park and support a fantastic local business (and ask for Adjua!)

I really love this place. If you come in feeling like crap you will leave feeling great. Adua, Tasha, Yvonne are the best.

I think it's really harsh to rate a a place as one star when you weren't ever able to actually make it there to experience it.
Anyway, I live in downtown Silver Spring and actually work at a salon/spa, but didn't feel like making the hike and going in on my day off but I really needed a pedicure. I'm all about living organically and have been wanting to try the Still Point, so since it's close to my house I finally did. My pedicure was with Gabby, who is not only super sweet but made my feet look awesome. In addition I loved the decor, I thought the ambiance was great. I'm a stickler for spas and have been to a lot, most notably Ten Thousand Waves in New Mexico. I didn't mind at all walking outside, I thought it was refreshing. I even enjoyed the view from the second story room where I got the pedicure, I got to look at cute, old Takoma Park houses.
The only thing I wish they did was some sort of body scrub. If they read this maybe they'll add it to their services. Either way I'll definitely be back. -

PMTI canceled on me at the last minute, so I decided to spend the big bucks because my body was super tight. I called Still Point because I had a $10 off card from a woman who gave me a chair massage. Well, she wasn't available, but they gave me the $10 off anyway. (First bonus.) Brigitte was my massage therapist, and the woman has a gift. No joke. I was extremely sore, tight, knotted--any word for STRESSED can be applied to how my body felt when I arrived. But Brigitte's deep tissue work was superb. She got every knot, and I felt amazing afterward. I highly, highly recommend her.
