24/7 restaurant has the best fries I've ever had. Encrusted with parmesan. Yum!
Their chocolate cake rivals the one from Maggiano's in sheer decadence.
Getting in is not a problem if you're dressed up.
It was fun sightseeing: Great looking women come here!
Standard, you bore me. Your dark bar within is Euro trashy and overpriced. Your hotel pool bar outdoors looks like that of a motel with the plastic furniture.
Lobby-wise, I am also disturbed by the West Hollywood Standard. The whole model sitting in a clear window case reading a book is just creepy and vouyeristic. Humans were not meant to be on display like that.
Really?? Why is this place supposedly so popular?
My friends came for a birthday get-together, and after dinner, we were so hungry that we went to Sushi-Dan afterwards (which was pretty bad sushi as well...). Food is over-priced, and totally pretentiously crappy (as in, trying too hard to be exotic, but failing miserably). Drinks are the same. Tables are small. Pool-side is GHETTO, especially during the day. And the hotel rooms look ghetto as hell. I don't get why this place is supposed to be beougie. It totally looks like a run-down hotel to me. The only cool thing I liked is that girl living in the aquarium in the front desk. That girl's gonna suffer from back problems one day, I swear.
We stayed one night out of a planed 6 night stay. We booked a few days before and on arrival our reservation was missing and this seemed a common thing, many guests I over heard at the front desk had the same issue. But to the guys at the front desks credit, they were very helpful and got it sorted effortlessly.
This is an old OLD hotel and really needs an upgrade to the rooms.
The air conditioning is not adjustable except for the fan speed, I woke up dehydrated and wet from sweat, the room had gone from nice and cool to stinking hot over night. The friend I stayed with spent the night sleeping on the floor in the bathroom to stay cool and no she hadn't been drinking.
The waitress by the pool seemed to hate her job and didn't do her job.
Just not the hotel for me.
We moved down the road to Andaz and it's amazing.
The Standard Hotel's West Hollywood location has good eats, a fun mini club and relaxing pool & lobby lounges that make this retro-mod spot a great place to stay or visit.
Tasty American cuisine in the 24 hour diner. The garlic fries are mouthwatering and I love that they serve Nutella chocolate spread with their deliciously simple breakfasts. Don't bother with the overpriced smoothies but the food is great.
The mini club has a full bar, groups of seats with about a square foot of dance floor in between each of them, and an outdoor smoker's paradise patio. Shiny chrome mirrors and purpley-pink lights sets a warm disco vibe but if the DJ is whack, this room can feel like a bad trip...
Love lounging by the pool. When it's not overcrowded it can feel like your own little blue heaven. Delicious Mojitos!
Service outside is slower and less friendly than inside the diner, but the food and drinks make up for it.
One of my fav local spots.
Purely reviewing the lounge at the Standard.
I went for my old roommate's 21st birthday a couple years ago. This was the first bar/club/lounge of the night, and it was SUCH A BUZZKILL! It was small, pretentious, had bad music, and the waitresses and skinny bouncer were rude. Let me explain: The place was empty, we asked if we could sit on the couches since it was empty, they said yes, and then about 20 minutes later (still empty), the same people were like, "You need to get up. This is loitering and you need to leave this area." Loitering? Really? Aren't you supposed to chill and relax in a lounge?
What probably prompted this was the fact that the waitress who came around every 5 minutes wasn't able to get us to buy any drinks from her. We all had drinks in hand, none were finished because sorry, we're not lushes who down drinks in 5 minutes. We politely said no each time, and I think after the third time she got pissed and told the anorexic bouncer to kick us out of her area.
As the night went on the crowd got pretty lame so some of us left to go home while others headed to a club. I was disappointed that my friend's night didn't start off better, but what can you expect from a place that apparently caters to the middle-aged with bad taste in music.
EDIT: So I just looked at another review and I'm kind of surprised by the outdoor smoker's paradise patio remark. I was out there before we left, and it was just concrete with some tiki torches. Maybe they improved it since I was there, but I would hardly call it a paradise.
Free pool on weekdays,
But full of Hollywood sluts.
Like my rock hard tits?
I ordered a salad and bottled water from a very friendly waitress. My friend had a diet coke. It was just too hot to order cocktails on this simmering afternoon. Got a bill that charged us at least sixty dollars more than it was supposed to be. In most cases I just hand over my card. But the honey I was with has friends who work there and apparently this is a common scam amongst the servers at The Standard (Hollywood). We asked the waitress to revise the bill. Some other waitress came back with a more accurate bill. I have not returned.
The Standard? More like The "below" Standard. I've stayed on Sunset before and my experience has been that the hotels are typically very Hollywood hip. This hotel is very Ikea meets Hollywood. I'm not sure what kind of vibe they are reaching for, but it falls short and ends up seeming cheap. Our room wasn't ready when we checked in. When we did check in, it smelled like pine sol. The bedding consisted of an itchy wool blanket that reminded me of TJ. The silver bean bag in the room seemed out of place and tacky. The redeeming factors are the location, the service was good, the restaurant had a great breakfast selection, and there was a decent view.
Sigh. The room was interesting. You can take the potted cactus home for $25 as per the servi-bar menu. Everything in there is supposed to be 1960sish, and basic.
They are not about quality or quantity here. Just basic amenities. However, the towels were nice.
No bath tub, only a shower with orange tile. We did have a balcony overlooking Sunset, and we were in walking distance to House of Blues, Saddle Ranch and Miyagis.
The food at the diner was okay. They had an interesting desert mural, which looked authentic in pictures as if we were actually having dinner in the Mojave Desert.
The pool is disgusting. Murky water and evidence of detritus/sand/body scum at the bottom of the pool. The club at the Standard is okay, but the music was too loud and the crowd too generic.
Yes, there is a model who is paid to "work" an 8 hour shift by chillin in a glass box behind the registration desk. That was novel.
They did not tell me that my $160 room was actually $180 after tax, and valet is $30 fucking dollars--lame.
Not coming back. But, it was an experience.
The Standard on Sunset has always been a great location for me to grab a few drinks with friends and maybe catch a late night meal so I thought, why not try staying for the night?
So I approach the front desk, ask the nightly rate and am quoted 185.00, 185 I think- I could get a room at the W, London West Hollywood or other properties near by, but hey this is a new experience so I was willing to try it.
Last question I ask the front desk agent, "I'm active duty Air Force, do you by chance offer any military discount", to which I get a snickering laugh and no answer. NOT FUNNY TO A VETERAN PERIOD.
Continuing on, I receive my keys, and am directed on how to get to my room, directed through a FOUL smelling elevator up to the 3rd floor where the hallway carpeting had looked like it had urine and vomit stains all over it with paint chipped walls and the soundproof-ness of a Motel 8, complete with creeking floors.
I then enter my room which is PAINFULLY decorated with only a bed, mirror and a strange bean bag chair that to note is very uncomfortable, "this can't be the same place" I think as I remember the clean lines and tasteful decor downstairs.
As if my room wasn't uninviting and drug welcoming enough, I stepped into a bathroom that obviously had had the bathtub ripped out, (noted by the unfinished plaster work on the wall) and replaced with a tall standup shower, mixed all together with a bright orange sink with a bent metal leg, giving your toiletries a little "slide" if you so chose to set them down.
Needless to say, I didn't shower at the hotel, why? Because the overall cleanliness and piss poor finish actually steered me away from using the dumps washroom.
So morning comes, and I awake to a nice fun filled minibar filled with condoms, candles, umbrellas, "potted cactus" and.....no coffee?, actually let's just forget the coffee thing and go back one step, "Potted Cactus.........$25.00"
Who the fuck is going to take a plant, let alone a cactus from a hotel minibar, was the marketing director on mushrooms when this idea came up?
So back to the coffee issue, no coffee, no big deal, call room service..... calling room service, Room service voicemail??? what the...................
So I leave a message for a coffee request which is quite fucking annoying and hmm, lets see don't get a call back about it for 30 minutes, you should be ashamed Standard.
The only part of my stay I had a smile on was when I checked out, stinky and all from no shower.
Everything about this place speaks: TACKY, DATED, CHEAP
- Light purple vinyl wall paper?
- bright orange tiles and orange sink in the bathroom?
- blanket on the bed is the same one I used when I was 3 yrs old... so 80's
- what's with the blue turf around the pool?
they try to fake class by charging you an arm and a leg for a room, then charge you $30 to valet your car... no class is still no class...
My favorite place to stay when I'm in LA to have a good time.
The Standard is a fun, "hip" hotel right in the middle of Sunset Blvd. The rooms are extremely basic -- don't expect luxury. This is the kind of place where you check-in, drop your bags, open the sliding glass door onto the balcony and never close it.
The poolside bar at The Standard is my favorite "chill" spot in all of Hollywood. I highly recommend paying a little extra to get a room that faces the pool area -- it makes for much better atmosphere.
Also, Rudy's, the hair place inside the hotel lobby, is a little-known locals secret for a great haircut at an affordable price. When I lived in Hollywood, I would go to The Standard just to get my haircut.
Did not like it at all. Tiny little space. The crowd is of that usual Hollywood Douchey variety, which is to be expected given the area.
The only thing i liked about this place is the wall paper in the men's room. Peter Pan prints. AWESOME.
Everything else? No thanks. I'll only come back if I'm dragged here kicking and screaming...
This is plain and simple with The Standard it is either "hit" or "miss", and it is never predictable.
OK I agree, the crowd there is kind of pretentious, but the entire strip is, this is Hollywood people what do you expect???
The Standard on Sunset is not as impressive as the one in Downtown, but if you don't know anyone at The Standard Downtown, and you don't like to wait in line, this one is a better bet, but between us, the one Downtown is more fun, and the view alone wow!!!
The thing with The Standard is that if you are there on a good night, it is better than most of the other places on the Sunset strip, the crowd is not as rowdy, more upscale (on a good night!), and is cosmopolitan (Europeans, well-traveled Americans....), it is a hotel after all.
A great thing about The Standard is that it offers several options depending on your mood, if you want to be in a relaxed atmosphere there is an indoor lounge area with ambient music, or an outdoor lounge/pool area. There is a pretty nice view from the pool area.
If you want something more energetic, then there is the purple lounge which has more of a club atmosphere, DJ, little dance area, and the usual drunk people :-P (Come on gotta love them!)
This place has a Euro-feel to it, and on the nights DJ Mouse is there you would almost forget that you are in Hollywood, tons of Dance, techno, Alternative, House music....
One other thing that I like about this place is that if you get hungry, you can just order something at the restaurant which is open 24H, and that also gives you a discount on the parking fee. The food is pretty good, especially the chocolate cake, mmmmhhhh!!!
I think that it is a great place to try for anyone that is visiting, and a great place to come back to for those of us who live here.
PS: In regards to the hotel rooms, I wasn't impressed at all, for that price you can find better.
We wanted to stay here, obviously, because it was where the "Sex and the City" girls stayed when they came to Hollywood (remember the episode with Miranda riding the mechanical bull at the Saddle Ranch?).
I love the concept, but the hotel is totally overpriced (and we got a discount on our room). The bathrooms desperately need to be redone -- you can tell this was a tacky motel at some point and they just hipsterized it.
The staff and service were awesome, especially the waitress at the poolside lounge area.
It's all very Hollywood, though, and if you've got the cash to spend, it's worth a night's stay.
This is only a review for food/bar.
I live down the street so I haven't slept here or been to a hotel room just yet. The diner is open 24 hours and the food is pretty delicious. The service was not the quickest but you can sit down and enjoy a nice view of the Sunset Strip.
As for the lounge/bar you cannot beat the prices of liquor and the atmosphere is very cool. A nice crowd seems to fill the place with a mix of locals and out of towners partying into the night. This is one of the few places you can drink up at and not go quite broke for a night of fun.
50 bones for a pitcher of mojito? really? ok fine, throw in a deejay, a lot of people watching, fluffy white towels, a sweet view of Los Angeles and a ping-pong table while poolside and it's well worth it.
Fast, friendly service and a TC vibe. Dig it.
I love hanging out here...
It's one of my spots!
Has a laid back hip California atmosphere that I love.
Everything is white and they have fun MOD couches and chairs!
I love the modern lounge feeling... the back they have a lounge hidden away where is all dark and purple which is fun to hang out too!
If you have the munchies after drinking, they have a cool diner where you can get Classic American food!
The bar is not the place to be at night. Well maybe a Monday night HA HA.
The place itself is really cool and chillax but the people working there are not. The male bartenders are fine but the female waitress has some MAJOR attitude. Oh careful cuz if u get on her bad side, she'll bring in a big bouncer to ID you again. Retardo.
Pretty lame all around. Trying to be something it isn't with the chick laying in the little window on display behind the front desk and the ultra tacky, garage sale-ish furniture inside. The pool setting reminds me of something Chevy Chase would swim in on the Vaction movie and was surrouned by douches and fat chicks. It has a nice view of the city I suppose and is in a good location (right across from Cabo Cantina). Other than that I dunno yo.
To be fair, I've never been a guest here, so I experienced the bar and the poolside areas but not much else.
I really don't understand what is so special about this place. I know, I know... I went to the Hollywood hotel instead of the Downtown one (which I plan to visit over summer) and I shouldn't have expected much.
Anyways, a friend had her birthday at the Purple Lounge inside The Standard. The lounge tried very hard to be "Metro Hip," with really dark lighting and neon purple lights. It looked good enough, but it was TINY and they put a swinging couch RIGHT in front of the entrance so that every time I went in or out some douchebag or another kept swinging into me (while I was wearing heels, mind you).
Drinks: NO. At one point, I ordered an Irish Car Bomb. Let me tell you something about Irish Car Bombs: see, you're supposed to drop the shot glass INTO the beer glass and chug. So may I ask WHY the bartender gave me the TALLEST shot glass I've ever seen and the SHORTEST beer glass in the world? I had to pour the shot in because it wouldn't fit otherwise. Oh, and they have NO beer on tap. And the drinks are WAY overpriced.
Music was nothing special. Dance floor was WAY too overcrowded.
I went outside to the poolside area, which looked like the pool at any given motel. Parking is RIDICULOUS (this is Sunset Blvd. after all). The diner area looked crappy.
The best part of The Standard? The lady at the door. Awesome Brit accent.
If I want a good night out in LA and spend time with a good group of friends, then I like to check out places on sunset rather than on hollywood blvd. The Standard is a pretty chill spot. They have a small club area, dining area, and a pool area that are all connected and relatively close to each other. The hotel itself is gorgeous - modern and trendy decor, cool couches and sofas, and an interesting art piece behind the front desk (a real life lady playing with her mac ...you have to see it to believe it).
The pool area is an awesome lounge spot at night. Drinks are pretty normal LA prices here..around $9-12 a drink. The club area is pretty small, but the lights are cool and they play some pretty good electronic beats. Only was able to come here at night, I would like to actually like to try staying there overnight and check out the rooms..
Purple Lounge Review
Cashin in like you own hollywood never looked or seemed so out-of-place. If a party is in queue and you're attending, not all is lost, except maybe for the fact you will need to mingle soon or be overcrowded visually, and physically. The word "posh" here is always thrown around in conversation, where decadence is an acquired taste learned through nostalgic yearnings of "plastic" love.
The good: It's on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood so it's close to everything. It's clean and the staff is friendly. It is also half as expensive as the Mondrian Hotel next door, and the Mondrian ain't all that.
The bad: It's on the Sunset Strip so the noise from all the cars may drive you insane. It's obviously another old hotel that has been refurbished. It is also twice as expensive as the hotel would be if it were located just about anywhere else.
So, if you must stay in Hollywood, then you'll save money by staying here. But you'll still be paying quite a bit.
After a few trips to the Standard just to have drinks, I finally stayed at the hotel and was pleased with my visit. I drove down to LA (from SF) for the night to celebrate my friends birthday and we decided just to do everything at the Standard.
Basically we arrived at 4:30pm on Saturday and never set foot outside the hotel until 1pm on Sunday! This proved to be a great way to make the party easy - we pre-partied in the room, ate dinner poolside, danced in the lounge, and ended back upstairs to chat and pass out.
I agree with some of the other reviews about the decor, the noise, the crowd, etc, but all in all it was a good stay. Would I go back, I'm not sure, but the pool is to die for on a warm, clear LA day. As if those happen...
I stayed here on business and showed up pretty early (11:00 AM) but to my surprise they gave me my room right away and I got an upgrade. The room was nice and open with two huge sliding doors on each side to a big patio. The bathroom could use an update - they are kind of scraping by on the retro look, but other than that the experience was all around solid, relaxing and fun.
My girlfriends and I wanted to stay in a hotel near or on the strip so we don't have to worry about cabbing it all the way back to the westside. I considered a few places (with a lot better reviews on Yelp), but ultimately went with the Standard due to its location. I should have listened to you Yelp.
Although the lobby area is nice, and the front desk workers pleasant, everything else was "meh." M.P.'s review hits the nail on the head. They were trying to go for a certain look and they failed miserably. They looked cheap, ugly and down right scary. What ticked me off even more was that while we were getting ready in our rooms, the other half of our group was supposed to show up so we can get to the club together. The doorman wouldn't let them in! Ridiculous. Thank god I was only there for one night.
Got tired of this place real quick. Its very nice in the inside but the weekends I dislike the DJ. I think Sunday is the 'black day' where the DJ plays Lauren Hill to Dwele to Little Brother. Shes dope. Sometimes though the uhhhh....'MC' of the night bothers. Shes cool but she gets up there and .. 'raps' and it was cool the first time but when we went back I discovered she wasent a free style artist but yet she rapped the exact same thing from some Sundays ago. But she is pretty so it works. Her friend actually got up there and spit it something serious. Really dope. I am over coming here though. Its cool but its not an continous thing for me.
We stayed here this past Thursday night and again Monday night. I understand that they renovated a convalescent home so now I kinda get it. Service at the front desk is on one speed - slow. The place has a cool mod look and affordable outlets; cafe; hair place; etc. It has a good location not that far from the Mondrian. Rooms are set on a hill so has gorgeous balconies and views.
I have to really minus stars for the bright Tang orange bath tiles and sink counter tops as well as super creaky floors. If 2 people stayed in the room, the other will never be able to sleep! Amenities are kinda sparse so don't expect much.
Purple Lounge:
Fun, modern and hip vibe. Cooool door people, pretty good DJ's. Lounge is a little small, and has random swinging couches but it's a chill place! Not the hottest spot in Hwood, but fun place for a chill night!
i've stayed at boutique hotels before. most come with something "trendy" that they do, like a special spa, a nightclub, or some architectural specialty "you just HAVE to see!", and usually they do that thing pretty well. they kind of have to, it's what keeps customers coming through the doors. the standard, as far as i could tell, did a few things pretty well.
from the moment i parked the rental lambo in valet under the sign with upside-down text and handed the keys to a guy with full sleeves, to the hanging egg chairs in the lobby near the full shag carpet with beautiful people lounging around, to the girl in the glass case behind the check-in counter pretentiously reading some art book - i knew i was in a good place. there was a barbershop (rudy's) near the lobby which promised a cut that'd make you paparazzi-ready in a few minutes, the walls on the second floor were covered with puffy vinyl, the poolside was decorated in 50's style hollywood colors with astroturf, a full outdoor bar, and a great view of hollywood and LA, a diner-themed 24-hour restaurant on the main floor with a hip club hidden in the back, the shower was tiled in bright orange tiles, there was an ipod stereo system in the room.. lots of little details that i was pleased with. oh, and the mattress sits on the floor - something i'm comfortable with, but i'm sure more stuffy business types would have a problem with, custom bathroom elements from a collaboration with kiss your face, random fixtures seem to have been rescued from antique hotels and repurposed in a stylish fashion like the hammered copper surfaces in the diner or the washbasins in rudy's barbershop. all-around, the standard is working with a strong design aesthetic i was pretty into.
their only downfall was that a lot of elements seemed to go 9/10ths of the way toward perfection. in the service industry, you have to go all the way. for example, the walls and floor/ceilings felt paper-thin without any sound-proofing. when i got a haircut in rudy's, i left with little hairs all over, and inside, my shirt. just things like that that sort of stuck with me, but weren't life-threatening. i'd definitely stay there again, but you can't stay at this hotel expecting the W... the location almost couldn't be any more perfect - within minutes of the viper room, HUF LA, supreme, flight club LA, toi thai, and many other hollywood favorites of mine.
I agree with the guy below:
"This place is supposed to be cool? Stylish? Maybe in1997. "
Well-stated.
I am giving this place a high rating. BUT I am going to complain about the manager.
I had a WWE birthday party and was staying at the Standard for the weekend (as I always do for party weekends- So I am a repeat customer)... I even get the same room each time.
However, my birthday weekend I was dressed in a gold leotard with face paint makeup and a mullet wig. I was told many times by my friends that I looked REALLY ugly. SO anyways, I was at the Saddle Ranch, which is spitting distance from The Standard. Somehow I thought it was a logical idea to take a cab from Saddle Ranch to Standard. The 2nd unlogical thing, I had no money. I was in a leotard!
I don't know what happened (I was WASTED) but somehow I ended up at the front of the hotel, the cab driver was trying to charge me 30 bucks for 1 block and the hotel manager wouldn't let me into the hotel. He called the cops on me and I had to stand there next to the valet guys, in my leotard feeling like a dumbass. I guess I said some racial slurs (REALLY!!!? have you seen my skin color???) that offended him. So he kicked me off the premises but I cried and talked him into letting me call my friend who was in my room. My friend came out, paid the cab, claimed me, and talked to the police and manager. He calmed everyone down.
I am but a little asian girl. I come in peace.
I blame the mullet. I was ugly. They never would have treated me this way if I was pretty. Now I know they are predjudice.
Well so am I Vanilla Face. Take that for racial slurs.
*** This review is only for the poolside ***
In the summer, it's so nice to tan under the warm sun in LA!!
Most Sundays in the summer, The Standard has these pool party Sundays with no cover charge before 2pm (with RSVP via email). Sometimes they have a DJ out on the pool deck or have samplers of free stuff. Either way, this is the place to relax and people watch in the summer for free.
Though I did mention that it was free to get in, it's freakin hot with no shade at noon time. They don't allow outside drinks or food, so you have to order from their menu, which can be a bit pricey. You have to use their white hotel towel and not your bright colorful beach towel! XD And you can't sit at the tables unless you are a guest at the hotel or order something from the menu.
It's totally a fun place to come with a group of friends and splash in the pool on a nice sunny day in LA!! :D
Last call at 2am??? What's a New Yorker to do?
So it should come as no surprise that LA has very few restaurants serving food 24 hours. The Restaurant at The Standard Hollywood is one of the very few that does.
The menu is relatively short and the prices are marked up. You can get a croque monsieur or a basic egg and toast breakfast. The seating is predominantly booth seating for maximum comfort. You can scope out the Sunset Strip for drunken fools while waiting for your food to arrive.
Ironically, I seldom eat at The Restaurant in the late evenings. I recommend you grab lunch during a hot afternoon. You can head to the pool afterwards and order Mojitos and catch same rays. The cocktail servers are often attractive. You can even get a haircut at Rudy's Barbershop located left of the reception desk.
The rooms are also relatively inexpensive. They have nice views, but the interiors aren't that great. You're better off at the Grafton Hotel just blocks away.
Yeah, you'll encounter some annoying Hollywood types mixed with some Euro-trash every now and then. Still, The Restaurant at The Standard Hollywood is worth an afternoon visit.
After leaving a club, my friend and i enjoy coming to Standard for the after crowd, it is great for people watching. Service is great. Food is ok.
Whoever heard of a hotel that has almost no rooms with two beds?
This is madness!
Me and my girl stayed here while we were in LA for the MTV video music awards. I didn't get to sit out by the pool, but it seems they had a pretty crackin pool/cocktail hr scene with a good DJ.
My friend had run into a little problem... her Dolce & Gabbana gown didn't make it in time to the hotel so she could wear it to the awards so..... panic had set in and we were pretty much freakin out.
BUT... being the resourceful woman I am, I enlisted the help of Brad - concierge extraordinaire to help me find a stylist that could possibly help her find the perfect outfit. Even though we weren't able to find someone, he was SUPER helpful in trying to exhaust all his resources but.. hey it was the night before the show.
The rooms were clean, I was a bit turned off by the bright orange tile in the bathroom/shower but, whatever I get it- it's that retro look.
We went there for an afterparty, too after the awards show. Tony at the door was super cool and sat us down at his VIP table. Good company, good conversation and free Belvedere. I was very happy. Plus, I was finally able to change out of my stillettos into my boots- much easier to move in!
Great place if you like bad disco music, paper-thin walls, noisy air-conditioning, overpriced, horribly-furnished rooms, showers with mildew, and bean-bag chairs that seriously need disinfecting. What a dump.
