12 reviews for The St. Regis Aspen Resort
If my family, S.O. and dog didn't live in CA and money grew on trees, I would set up permanent camp at St. Regis. The staff is sweetly friendly, the room was amazing and the food was delicious.
Who wouldn't want world class service? The humidifier, slippers, chocolates, water bottles, fitness center, and spa sold me.
There were many things the St. Regis got just right--they are a luxury hotel and this is their job, so I can't really reward them bonus points for things like bottled water and chocolate, but still, it's nice. There were also a few things they also got blatantly wrong. We stayed one night of Labor Day weekend. We did not go to the spa. I had a great time and I'd give 4 stars if this wasn't a luxury hotel, but in relative terms of luxury hotels that should go above and beyond, I have to give them a strong 3. Here is the rundown of the good and the bad:
THE GOOD
-Basic luxury hotel amenities. Bottled water, trail mix and apples in the room, tons of dark chocolate, lots of smiles.
-The Lounge. I spent most of my time in Aspen curled up on a leather couch, clinging onto whatever drink I currently was sipping and staring into their fireplace.
-The turndown of the room during the evening. While we were in the lounge before dinner, the room was tranformed into a sleepytime palace with our robes, slippers, etc. laid out for us and the Bose stereo playing soft jazz/sleepytime music.
-The hot tub. Beautiful courtyard view back there. Good to get there early enough so you can have it to yourself.
-The New York Times in the morning. I can stick to my morning ritual!
-S'mores. Wonderful! Super fun, but I do wish I could have my old-fashioned Hershey bar instead of the fancy-schmancy chocolate hazlenut spread.
-And the ultimate good: THE BED. Oh my lord. I swear this was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. It was so comfortable that I literally DREAMT that night ABOUT THE BED and telling people how great it was. No joke. Best night of sleep ever.
THE BAD
-When we made our reservations, we were told check in was at 3 PM. We arrive at the hotel at 3:10 only to be told check-in is at 4 PM. What gives?
-While I'm all mountain-sicky without a room, getting more mountain-sicky in their gilded marble bathroom, J tells the front desk I'm seriously sick, that we were told the check-in was at 3 and his girlfriend is seriously ill, can the room be rushed so I can at least be mountain-sicky by myself. The front desk woman smiled and told him they'dcall as soon as the room was ready, took his phone number, offered him another bottled water and explained the hotel store sold altitude sickness medicine (a batch of who-knows-what pills for $6).
-They never called us about our room. 4 PM passed, then 4:30, until finally J gets up to check what the story is. Our room is ready after all--they never called.
-Our room, after these mistakes, was right by the elevator. We call management, explain what had already happened to us and ask if they can see whether a comparable room is available. They say they will call us back. They never do--not even to say that they have nothing available. Not at all luxury-hotel of them.
-No coffee maker in room? Are you kidding? We had to pay $18 for a pot of coffee delivered with our morning paper. It was, however, delicious coffee.
I'm very, very, VERY low maintenance, especially when it comes to hotels. Case in point: as long as my "home away from home" has these minimal, pithy set of amenities, I'm a happy camper (arranged in no particular order):
- Down pillows: at least 2, preferably 4.
- Robe: soft, terry cotton; with matching slippers, of course).
- Wireless high-speed internet access (free): because information just wants to be free--and if I want to read my e-mail in my robe whilst tucked in my bed, I will!
- Reading materials: choice of N.Y. Times, WSJ or local newspaper (or all three) for my current events reading pleasure, supplemented with a nice array of other local and national periodicals.
- Bathroom facilities: separate "water closet" for some quiet reading time of said current events/periodicals reading pleasure.
- Butler: for the floor--i.e., the butler doesn't have to be exclusive to my room, just for the floor is acceptable (see, I told you I'm low maintenance).
- All-in-one (printer, scanner, fax) multifunction device: located in my room, and preferably hidden away in a custom desk drawer.
- Cordless phones: cordless, with one line dedicated to said all-in-one (fax) machine.
- Hotel car: someone to drive me to the coffee shop 100-yards down the block so I don't have to subject my snow boots to the ice or snow by walking there (they can wait there while I drink my coffee or come back when I call them--I don't mind either way).
- Ski valet: professionals who will tune-up my toys (snowboards, skis, etc.) at the end of each day.
- Dark chocolate: a basket refilled everyday, with a bag of trail mix on the first day.
Of course, I shouldn't have to mention the soft, but firm, bed and 1,000-thread count linens (as those should be de rigueur), turn-down service, and competent and efficient staff that will greet me with a friendly "Hello Mr. El Jorge"* or "Have a nice day Mr. El Jorge" whenever I enter or leave, respectively, the hotel, or when I actually personally have the occasion to lift a finger to pick up the phone *gasp* and call down to guest services (e.g., for third refill of said dark chocolate basket...for the day).
*Okay, I sometimes register under "El Jorge" just to see the expression on the staffs' faces when they address me, but I didn't do it here.
The St. Regis, Aspen fulfilled everything on my list, and more.
Conveniently located at the base of Aspen mountain and very close to transportation to the Snowmass, Buttermilk, and Highland mountains, the property offers a comfortable, upscale lodge feeling throughout with a warm, inviting central fireplace in the lounge area. The property is spread out over three buildings, a portion of which is dedicated to the 25 "residences" belonging to the St. Regis Residence Club--each of which are two or three bedroom luxury apartments offered under fractional ownership. A Remede Spa is located on-site to service the visitors staying in one of the residences or 179 guest rooms.
So everything was perfect? No. No property is ever perfect, of course, and these items detracted from my (and would detract from any discerning guest's) overall experience (based on the proprietary checklist I created to critique hotels):
- It was apparent that some repainting had been done in the WC because there were paint marks on the wallpaper. These should have been cleaned up or the affected wallpaper replaced.
- The hot tub and pool were near the residence portion of the property, which means most hotel guests had to walk across the lobby/property in their robes. *I* personally felt fine parading around the property (with the provided slippers for good measure), but hey, my hotel is my home-away-from home, so welcome to my place! But other people may not feel as self-confident.
- The ski valet is located in another building, which means that you have to carry your equipment over. This is a minor complaint and I am sure their helpful staff would have taken our equipment over if we asked.
- Other minor annoyances not worth mentioning here, but something the hotel would probably ask a QA consultant to note in his/her report.
Overall, though, we were very satisfied with the experience, and will visit again to sample more of what the property has to offer the next time we are back in Aspen.
Hmmm. After my wonderful stay at the St. Regis, Aspen, I may have to raise my expectations for fine hotels and resorts.
My wife and I stayed at the St. Regis in Aspen for a quick weekend getaway. We visited early November, which is off season. The tourists visiting to watch the leaves change had already left, and the ski season doesn't start til after Thanksgiving. This meant we pretty much had the hotel all to ourselves!
Since it was off season, there were many deals available such as reduced rates, daily credits, discounted spa services, and free parking. Also, it was easy to get reservations at the restaurant and spa.
I was thoroughly impressed with all service from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The staff really goes out of their way to make eye contact and acknowledge your presence. Upon arrival, the butler offered a tour of the facility, which was very useful. They also had a wonderful welcome package prepared in our room for our anniversary. This was fantastic!
Everyone who staffed the concierge desk was friendly. Being off season, it was pretty easy to get reservations, but they took care of all details and followed up with a call to the hotel room.
Our room was great. Bathrom had a double vanity with marble floors, counter, and shower. I was really impressed by the huge walk in closet with mirror. I think all rooms have a flat screen LCD. Only problem is TV was on the right wall because the bed faced the window (mountain view) which makes you crane your neck when watching a movie from the bed. Oh well.
The additional facilities are also great. There is a business center with 6 or 8 computers available for free internet access. They have ergonomic chairs and nice wood furniture. One thing to note, I didn't see free wireless internet available, but the rooms had hard wired connections for $14.99 a day. I skipped the extra cost and used the business center. They have a nice looking gym with free apples, a heated outdoor pool and 3 or 4 outdoor hot tubs.
They have a great lounge connected to a bar. There is a huge fireplace in the middle, which makes it a cozy place to relax with a drink, hot chocolate, or smores. There is usually a server that takes care of this area.
There is an in-house restaurant (Olives) and an in-house spa (Remede). We experienced both and were impressed here as well.
Checkout was simple. Everything was accurate which made it a hassle free departure.
I would definitely recommend St. Regis! We will go again, probably during winter to experience the snow and check out the slopes.
I stayed here ifor a week n dec and loved it..everything was awesome..great serviice.. will go back again..5 star treatment.. they helped book anything we wanted to try.. free shuttle helped..great food, staff, and views.
Next trip I'm going to live and die in their spa! Ohhhh wow. I'm closing my eyes right now and I'm there...
Right near Ajax Mountain and in the Heart of Downtown is the beautiful cozy, inviting St. Regis.
Excellent Lounge, Restaurant, and accommodations. Then again it's the St. Regis it wouldn't be their style to anything less than Majestic.

Strong Suggestions: Do NOT miss the spa!
I would review the Aspen Pitkin Co Airport (ASE) as part of this, but it might drag down the score. You see, I was all set to fly out at 4p on a Thursday night, but owing to some low fog and rather intense snow, the incoming aircraft that represented my flight to Chicago landed in Grand Junction. I could have gone to Denver, but I would have been stuck there overnight in some Sky Hotel-esque Best Western. Instead, I let the throng of stranded passengers push their way out of the airport while I calmly reserved a room at the St. Regis (the only thing open, I think).
They have a "butler" (I use quotes because this particular butler was a 20-something woman) at the airport to help get your belongings onto their shuttle and answer any questions you have. When I got to the St. Regis, I scoffed at the notion that I should be made to stay in a smoking room (they have these?) and was dutifully upgraded to a suite, which , lemme tell you, was nice (full disclosure: I am a Starwood gold guy, so your mileage may vary).
So, inside of 15 minutes of my arrival at this grand hotel, I had my stuff in the Rain Man suite and a reservation at L'Hosteria. Quite the turnaround from being stranded at ASE with 250 other homeless people.
Earlier in my trip we ventured to their bar to see Eric Mead (magician) perform; he's there every Monday in-season. Big leather sofas and chairs + great cocktails + funny magician = pretty good late night option.
If I had to use one word to describe the Remede Spa at the St. Regis it would be sublime. I told my mother-in-law that the only gift she ever needs to get me is a gift certificate (no matter how small) to this spa. I've been several times, and my favorite treatments are the facials (microderm abrasion is offered with every 60 minute facial) and massages -- Annabelle is great. Be sure to arrive early and stay late to take advantage of all the amenities. You might want to bring your swimsuit to use the co-ed waterfall pool; be sure to check out the mega-shower at the very end of the shower stalls (at least that's where it is in the women's locker room), and do not turn down their offer of champagne and strawberries after your treatment. Take your glass to the oxygen room, sit in front of the fireplace with your cashmere blanket, and soak it up.
Of course, you should also dine at Olives, the hotel's restaurant. The restaurant itself is a bit stuffy -- I go to the bar where the atmosphere is better and so is the food. My favorites: fig & prosciutto pizza and the best bolognese I have had outside of Italy.
My husband and I (+ 1 small dog) spent a lovely week here in June. The service was perfect. The lounge area with comfy sofas and enormous fireplace was a highlight. Most evenings, they offered a DJ or live music. We also loved sitting around the firepits outside. The food was terrific. The lobster cobb salad was the best salad I've ever had. I would have given them one more star if their bar drinks were better. They need to update with freshly squeezed juices and innovative drinks.
Heaven is a place on earth!!!!
The food was great, the help was nice. The Spa was the best part of the vacation. I highly reccomend this place.
this place is great
