25 reviews for The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Just joined after getting to try it out 5 times. So much better than Crunch where I have worked out for years. Since Crunch lost their pool I was going to have to pay for a rec center membership or a Y on top of my Crunch membership. Taking that into consideration, Chelsea Piers is actually an affordable choice - at least on my utility curve. I really like how it has a clean crisp feel to it, so many programs and facilities and not overly crowded. If I coninue to be impressed I'll give it another star.
Allow me to say WOW!!! I am not a work-out freak but I absolutely love this place. I was able to get a free pass to try out this place..
THIS PLACE IS A TOTAL PACKAGE!! anything you ask for you will get it.
The only problem with this place is it's out of the way for most of people unless you live in chelsea. and a little bit hard to find for the very first time.
I am so going back =)
I'm a fitness fanatic and sports aficionado; this place offers the best of both worlds. The pool is always great for an afternoon dip. The lockers and bathrooms always smell clean and are in tip top shape.
This is by far the best gym/sports complex in NYC. As a former collegiate athlete this place is a dream castle. Some major highlights include the 3 indoor basketball courts, indoor track, clientele, and the relative privacy. Only two drawbacks that I can remember, the price (about $145/month) and the hassle it took to get there (disclaimer: I lived on Suffolk & Delancey and am originally from CA!) Overall, I highly recommend The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers for anybody that wants a large workout space with lots of different activities.
This is the best gym in NYC. It is a little pricey but in this case you get what you pay off. The staff is great. The trainers are typical they don't really "train". But then most people just want encouragement and not to be pushed. The space is huge and I have never had to wait for a piece of equipment. Large cardio area. The pool is great and the deck in summer is awesome. Right on the Hudson. The classes have endless choices and the teachers are great.
The spa is not that great. The services are over priced and under delivered. But then I am not here for the spa so it doesn't detract from my experience.
For me this is one of the places in my New York.
As everyone here has already said, this "gym" has everything: weights, running track, climbing wall, pool, saunas, pilates reformers, classes, trainers, a sushi bar and spa services. How many gyms have you been to where you'd actually be willing to spend more time than it takes you to workout? I left another gym for Chelsea Piers because I got sick and tired of waiting for equipment. The lockers rooms and showers are clean and the saunas smell good, not moldy like at my old gym. It's a little pricey and kind of a pain to get to, but at least I feel like going.
Great gym. Enormous yet cozy. And it's not crowded most of the times.
I love the great varieties of sports(e.g. boxing, rock climbing, basketball, volleyball, swimming) you can actually do at the sports center and you will never get bored.
Plus i love their swimming pool! its of 25 meter size and is surrounded by a great river view. You also can chill out at the jacuzzi.
The locker rooms are clean, spacious, and have all the toiletries you need (shampoo, conditioner, razors, cotton balls). Steam room has cool lighting and is relaxing.
Feel free to contact me as I have some extra one week passes.
This place is amazing. We need something like this out in the west coast that's for sure!
Andrew gave us a quick tour and was very friendly and helpful. The place itself was not as pretentious as I had assumed. Everyone was down to earth and just there to work out and have fun!
Great swimming pool that's even equipped with a lifeguard.
Indoor track so you don't have to worry about the elements.
A cool boxing ring and all the weights you can imagine!
One last thing, the food was great and affordable!
Love this place.
The space, the post workout sushi, the available machines, the friendly staff and the various alternative workouts available keep me active and take my Manhattan edge off. For real.
:)
This place opened just as I was starting my career in NYC.
I could never afford to go on my entry level Nonprofiteers's salary but blessed be it's beautiful.
I enjoyed just walking over here during lunch and sitting at the water.
I laughed as they opened up a fee based sun deck during the summer, I appreciate a place that knows how to work the gays for their precious dollars and at this point in NY history Chelsea was the place to be.
On a recent trek back I found that they have maintained its crisp feel and I think that's a great accomplishment. Unless a place maintains a diligent renewal it easily falls into a has been status.
There have been promises to bring a Chelsea Piers or Chelsea Piers clone to SF ever scone I arrived here over 6 years ago but something tells me I'll be gone before this ever gets close to going.
It was a clear black night, a clear white moon, Lisa was on the streets, trying to consume...on a mission trying to find, the perfect (boxing) gym. Sadly, I don't really think this is it, but since Chelsea Piers offers so much more, I'm highly thinking of joining.
A typical boxing workout:
A round of jumping rope
A round of shadow boxing
3-4 rounds of focus mitts with the instructor
2-3 rounds of bag work
2-3 rounds of Focus mitts with some other guy who is only so-so at holding mitts
1-2 rounds of focus mitts with the instructor
3x30 jumping back and forth over a ball
Leg lifts
Technique wise, it's a fine class, though I see plenty of other students with bad habits that were never corrected (stiff shoulders, non-extension of punches, etc.) though can you really blame the instructor for that? I guess just a different level of priority.
As for the facility itself, I don't really think it's that swanky. The interiors of Equinox are much better, but I'm always seeing this place getting cleaned!
I'm still on the fence about membership...In comparison to boxing gym membership rates, this place is really not that expensive.
Looking out at the water while working out is similar to being on a cruise ship. I forget about the world and its issues during my workout.
The high quality machines are well-spaced, and there are plenty of mirrors and light.
The Sports Center is not just a gym, it's a fitness resort.
I am renewing because they really went out of their way to accommodate my alternative form of transportation, and I appreciate that.
I wish I lived in Chelsea just because of this Sports complex. After strolling through Chelsea. I decided to venture all the way to 12th Avenue and I laid my eyes on a mammoth Sports complex overlooking the Hudson River. Once I went inside, I was amazed. The size of the gym was unbelievable. Yet it didn't seem packed at all. They had a balcony overlooking the river where they do yoga, a huge swimming pool, basketball courts, everything you could want in a sports complex. Even bowling! I'm definitely going to work out there when I go back.
"You don't know what you got til it's gone", isn't that the truth! I was a member of the Sports Center for over 8 years, until a few months ago when I decided to quit and workout at Equinox for free (no details..., but it's all about who you know in this world, isn't it?). During this time, I also had the experience of working out at David Barton Gym and had been to several NYSC's in the past, as guest of friends. With all that in mind, I can say that there is no gym like The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers! This place isn't even a gym, it's a sport complex and I didn't know how good I had it, until I gave it all up for something newer and hipper.
The Sports Center is perfectly located overlooking The Hudson River at 23rd Street. The space is the size of like, three hangers! It is full of natural sunlight and offers stunning views of the water and passing boats. The staff is extremely nice and there is no attitude anywhere, which I found out is a common thing at other gyms... The equipment is state-of-the-art, and there is so much of it you never have to wait. There is no other gym that has the space this gym has!!!! Besides offering the best cardio and lifting equipment, there is an indoor track, sand volleyball court, boxing ring, rock-climbing wall, 3 basketball courts, swimming pool, 2 sun-decks.... the list goes on. You can also get a massage at the spa and have lunch at the cafe. You can literally spend hours at this place. In the summer the sun-decks are an amazing place to take in sun and can be very social at times. The gym, itself, sponsors events on the decks, during the summer. They bring in local restaurants to host the events, and it's free and fun for all. This place is truly like no other!! I love this place and am happy that I will once again, be able to call it home! Check it out!!!
This place is swanky. I could never afford it, but I was here for a company retreat, and really felt like I was in a different place. This doesn't even seem like it'd be in New York. It almost feels like Southern California, Florida, or maybe even Navy Pier in Chicago.
It's an experience. Too bad it's way on the westside. A bit hard for me to do. (Not that it matters, I'm poor). Even the bathrooms are phenomenal! Admittedly I'm simple, so seeing mouthwash and lotion dispensers wow'd me. They even provided hair gel!
We participated in a series of team building events that included everything from bowling to rock climbing.
The amenities here are insane, and I only scratched the surface.
I have to take a star off for how expensive this place can get (and very quickly at that) but overall, rock on. Anything you want, you can do! They also have corporate event services, which looks like a cool thing, although we haven't taken advantage yet.
Thankfully my friend who's a member here can get a free guest pass every now and then cause man that sundeck w/ the breeze from the river is nice. If I could afford it, I would def be a member; the facilities are great, the locker rooms are super clean, it's just a great atmosphere, you don't even feel like you're in a stuffy gym
In my opinion one of the best adult hockey leagues in the city. I've been playing there for 3 years now and it just continues to get better and better. They've recently expanded and upgraded their facilities to include more parking. Extremely accessible, very affordable, and the view is awe inspiring.
Chelsea Piers is about 5 tennis courts short of being paradise, but given that it is actually built on piers and that it is in Manhattan, it is all forgiven. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Excellent service, clean locker rooms, soft towels, huge showers (I think you could easily have a foursome in one of those), clean sauna/steam room/pools - EVERYTHING is really clean and well maintained. The gym is exquisite and massive. New equipment, nothing is out of order, no lines anywhere. Eric P. and I went rock climbing here and boy oh boy that was FUNNN, not to mention that our heteroflexible instructor was quite the hottie. They have an indoor track, in Manhattan... CRAZY! A beach volleyball court, multiple basketball courts, a golf driving range, and a skating rink among a variety of other facilities, amenities and services - you name it! They do need to upgrade all the cardio machines with personal televisions though, but they have plenty of tellies all over, so it's not so bad. I love this place and the day I move to Chelsea/West Village, I will join it, hands down, while NYSC, Crunch and Equinox can go to hell. I would give Chelsea Piers a 6th star if it had tennis courts.
CP is a great place overall, and you can really have a great recreational experience there.
However, I must say it is not really a good place for a SPA experience. Honestly, the noise from the gym is really distracting, as well as the conversations outside the treatment rooms. Although the staff is good, they cannot make up for the level of noise you are exposed to while getting your message, trying to relax.
I love Chelsea Piers! I went here recently for a "corporate team building' outing and I had so much fun. We played beach volleyball on a court that was filled with sand, did jousting with the giant q-tips, and had a rock climbing relay. Their climbin wall is probably one of the best I have been on! One of the most impressive things was the locker room- which was incredibly clean, modern and provided a lot of little things that made a big difference (hair dryers, diffusers, hair gel, moisturizer); the ladies locker room even has a little vanity table section where u can primp yourself post-workout!
This is a fun place. If you are into sports this is the place to be.
I've been a member for a year now and must say its fucking luxurious. Yesterday I didn't even work out. I tanned on the deck overlooking the mighty Hudson, then had a pedicure in the amazing spa, then had fabulous sushi and watched the world cup final. At what other gym can you do all that? Its more like a country club.
Best Place in NYC! The yoga is amazing (Amitai's classes are my favorite) the climbing wall is huge and challenging, and the views are breathtaking.
Ahhh Chelsea Piers. If you are ever bored on the weekend, call a friend and come here. I would recommend you just pay the membership fee. If you work out a lot, this is the place for you. Swimming pool, lifting room, machines, private classes, personal training, beach volleyball (with real sand), track, and a rock wall. They have lots of places to get great, healthy (or not healthy) food. They also have a nice driving range and golf classes. If you don't like to work out so much (or your girlfriend doesn't), you can just relax at the luxurious spa. The public skating is great at sky rink, but can get extremely crowded with terrible skaters on the weekend. If you have never been the chelsea piers, your missing out on one of the best perks of living in New York.
