As far as I knew, there were little to no Thai joints near my humble abode that delivered. Enter the Yelp search function and my inability to properly read it before (read: lazy).
Spice Thai delivered our cashew chicken and Panang with tofu within the allotted 45-to-an-hour window, hot, tasty and with an order of crab rangoon on the house. Score!
The Panang was creeper hot. My nose ran happily as I devoured the whole thing. Craig's cashew chicken was shrug standard and for the price, it was, what can I say, a solid three stars. I'd get it again, but wouldn't brag about it.
Ordered lunch here again to try to the thai food again... staying away from the sushi since the hair of my last experience.
Unfortunately, this time my order was wrong. I wanted the spicy thai basil fried rice and I ended up with regular fried rice. It still tasted OK, but the basil was the reason I ordered it. Too bad.

I went there with my family over the weekend and was completely disappointed. I'm a huge fan of BYO's and hole in the walls, but this place was cold (temperature) and served cold food. On top of that, they had a big screen TV BLAIRING and, if you're like me, you'd prefer not to hear about the health care reform during your meal.
The most bizarre thing was thought our entree's came out at different times. We each got our dishes about 5 minutes apart, which is fine if they're doing this so our food is warm when it's received, but all of our dishes were freezing - YuK!
The edemame and crab rangoon were good but who can really screw them up?
I would not recommend.
I'm with some people on why the heck this place gets some negative reviews.
Every time I've ordered from this yummy place I've been super happy. Trust me. I am usually very careful where I order my sushi from--but this place has a great clean, delicious sushi bar inside the restaurant. I recommend the 'Logan Square' roll. It has tuna, avocado, asparagus, and cream cheese. It is delightful.
When I call all the lovely ladies are very friendly & my order is at my house in less than an hour. For these cheap prices--nowadays people can eat like kings!
Panang Curry oh how I crave you from Blighty's far off shores.
Great for delivery, eating-in is not as desirable if youre bothered by fancy decor, im not particularly.
The sushi is not worth bothering with, stick to the thai which is all-round excellent!
I'm looking at every previously reviewed establishment through new, vegan eyes. That being said, I'm pleased with The Spice. I ordered something besides Curry last night (which I've found to be too watery, but tasty here, so i continued to order).
I went with Cashew vegetable. The woman on the phone informed me of no fish sauce in anything, which is good to know. The dish had a great assortment of vegetables, but needed spice. It was so sweet it almost tasted like butterscotch. The following day, it tastes better because the flavors have mingled. I recommend ordering it spicy.
I also ordered the sweet potato maki without mayo, which was delicious. But i'm worried (unsure) if it had eel sauce on it. I recommend asking if you are veg.
But the food arrived super fast and my overall experience was better than in the past.

Okay, so there are certain places that you order delivery and when you get it it's so damn good that you don't ever want to stare the kitchen in the eye and see from where your food hails... This was one of them. We order delivery from this place frequently. Addictedly, some might say. Okay, so we suffer from chronic Spice Deliveratosis. Well, one day we decided to make the leap so we grabbed a bottle of wine (for it's incredible BYOBness) and headed in the general direction of Diversey and Milwaukee... Well, I lie, we went to 2886 N Milwaukee, home of The Spice. Not just any spice, I tell you. THE Spice. Oh man, was I ever scared looking at the outside. I thought this place was about to become another one of those places about which I fondly reminisce of delicious deliveries and full-belly smiles past.
Walking in, it was not EXACTLY what I expected. It lies somewhere in between the dodgey late-night place that you never want to admit you patronize (even if it is only after the night in which you consume 10+ drinks) and the cozy mom-and-pop diner in the neighborhood. The musty-smelling air conditioner brought back fond memories of summers in the lifeguard shack and their 2-fer-1 deal reminded me of college. Ah, college... The days of searching for the best price-to-rodent ratio. How I miss those days... but I digress.
So, yeah, their Tom Kha is even better in the restaurant. It's warm and fresh and utterly incredible. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better. Must be the lack of plastic in it when it's fresh... Just a thought. Their panang curry is pretty much the most bad ass dish, well, ever. I also recommend their mango sticky rice. It pretty much rocks the Kasbah. The service is spotty, but I don't care. I love the food that much.
Now, if we could only figure out who the creepy royal-looking dude is in the pic on the wall. If anyone knows, not only would I feel really smart, but also totally redeemed during my next visit if I whipped out that little nugget of wisdom... or a random factoid... whatever you want to call it.
Now... What to do for lunch...
The quality is dropping, and the vast menu shrank since last time I was there. Rumor is that they have new owners. This is a good thing when there is an improvement, but in this case, not so much... The rice came in 3 separate containers where you had to assemble it together (when getting takeout). If I am going to prepare my own food, I am not getting takeout, paying a delivery fee, and a tip. $30 for dinner for two items AND I had to prepare my own food? Tell me again why I would want to use you guys again? Oh and they tell you it takes an hour.
Best Thai food in the neighborhood, IMO. However, it's certainly not by any means outstanding as far as thai food goes.
Usually, the service is pretty good. Last night we had a different server than normal. She was kind of a bitch. Can I say that here? Well she was.
However, I believe this service to be an abnormality and will continue to frequent this establishment.
Also, some reccomendations: For seafood, try the Thai Hot Pot. For curry, I had Salmon Panang last night. It was delicious and ONE A'SPICY A'MEATBALL!
i'm happy that the spice is in my neighborhood. it's not my favorite thai place in the city but it's close and when i have a craving for thai, it always comes through. the long paradise is my favorite dish with lots of fresh vegetables. and i've been very happy with spice's sushi as well. sometimes they skimp on meat and their atmosphere is lacking, or is it just lacking customers?...
let's stick together spice and get through this winter!
I've been curious about The Spice Thai for a while, but I usually forget about it when it comes to dinner crunch time with the fiance. The other night, however, we were checking out the Milwaukee Arts Festival and walked by and thought, hey, we've never been, let's do it! And the sign proclaiming Vegetarians Welcome! made me feel well, welcome!
It wasn't very crowded, the room was fairly sparse, but it felt comfortable enough. There was a lot to choose from on the menu. In addition to the regular thai grub, they had sushi! I'm almost always in the mood for vegetarian sushi, so I was pleased to see that there were more options than many places. My fiance is a panang nut, so he was pleased that there was panang. I got an oshinko roll and an emerald roll (with spinach and asparagus yum-ness). He got...the panang, with tofu.
I looked over and saw the sushi chef doing his thing and was filled with pleasure that my sushi was being prepared as we sat there. Then my fella's food came out, so I tried a chunk of the tofu. The sauce was a little soupy, but there was a nice spice to it. But, I sat waiting for my maki to come out...
Then the tables around us, who were seated after us started getting their orders...and my fella was just about done with his panang.
Eventually our waitress noticed the look of sadness in my eyes when she brought out a nice plate of sushi for...someone else! I had been totally forgotten. Apologies ensued and eventually I got my rolls.
I'm just glad I wasn't starving or crabby, or this would've been a problem. As it stands, I was satisfied and I'll go back.
I like this place for cheap, delivery Thai food... but it's nothing special. They deliver pretty quickly and I have never had any issues with them in terms of that. My boyfriend isn't a big fan of their Green Curry (which is usually his favorite Thai dish), but likes the Crazy Noodle as of late. As for myself, I usually alternate between Mussaman curry and Pad Thai, and they are both tasty. Not the best Crab Rangoon I've ever had, by far, but I still get it whenever I order from here.
What is with Thai restaurants and playing loud dance/techno/pop music? I am a Cascada fan as much as the next person, but I don't really prefer to eat my Asian food to a heart-pounding techno beat.
A+ for Thai Food, D+ for Sushi
The Thai food here is really good, and I recommend you try it, along with a Thai Iced Tea if you've never had one. We were looking for somewhere to eat and passed by a few Mexican restaurants (I don't like Mexican food yuk), I was losing hope we would find anywhere I would like that has tasty and vegetarian food, but there goes Thai Spice with the sign on the window "Vegetarians Welcome" Wohoo. There are bright orange walls, seating against one wall, a nice window table, and a cool little fountan thingy that looks like smoke is coming off it. We also got sushi, which was hmmm not so great. The rolls are big though. It was nasty that there was cream cheese in a "tuna crunch" roll, it was just overpowering amount of cream cheese.
The service was mediocre, and we had to wait for-ev-er for the check after she said she would bring it, then I finally just got up to get the server myself. Overall, it's a cute restaurant with good food. One maki roll was $10. It is an average priced place, I wouldn't consider it cheap, just average.
I went here alone on a Sunday night around 730pm. There was NO ONE sitting in the dining room but a STEADY stream of people picking up to-go food. I mean, seriously, there was a train of people.
I ate two maki rolls. They took a long time... but then again they were really really busy with customers that were not currently occupying tables- so it's hard to gauge if they were slow or busy. I also ordered a curry dish.
My sushi was GREAT. I'm pretty picky and I was happy. The sweet soy sauce is really good and the rolls were tight and fresh like they should be. I ordered Mussaman curry also. It tasted great although not as spicy as I am used to. I am a VERY picky meat eater and the chicken was good until I got a bite of only fatty gristle. Things like that make me want to go vegetarian. Gross.
They get 4 stars because 1) service was really great 2) no corkage fee BYOB 3) great sushi with a unique and tasty garnish
Pricing is consistent with other Thai places. Less than $10 for dishes and $5-8 for most sushi rolls.
I gave this place another chance a few nights ago. First of all, the food *is* better than it was a year ago. The staff is nicer and the presentation was more artful. However, I cannot get over the fact that it smells like mold in there. They must have had a basement flooding, and the smell totally nauseated me.

Ok, I hate to say it, but I'm starting to understand the negative reviews. The last several times I've gotten delivery, the food hasn't been nearly as good as in the past, and the portions have become utterly dinky so it's harder to share.
Noticeably lower quality ingredients, smaller portions, inferior preparations and higher prices have all led to me taking this spot out of my regular rotation. It's not bad, at all, it just isn't as good as it used to be. I have to wonder if adding sushi to their menu has caused their Thai food to suffer...damn you, Pan Asian craze!
I'd still recommend the inexpensive lunch special and the staff is still very nice, but this is not The Spice Thai of 2 years ago.

The quality of this restaurant has gone downhill, while the interior decor has improved. I used to go here and the food was phenomenal and cheap, but I'd never dine in because it looked a bit dingy. I hadn't gone for a while and when I recently stopped in to pick up some takeout, I noticed a bit of a renovation.
When I got home, my tofu pad thai was not what I was familiar with. The prices were also higher, which I understand due to the price of goods going up but the meat in the side dish I got was much fattier, and of lower quality.
I've been ordering regularly from The Spice since I moved to Logan Square five years ago.
But no more.
Apparently they've changed chefs, as my last three orders (summer-autumn 2009) have been nowhere near the old quality.
I used to regularly order the Khao Soy - noodles in yellow curry sauce. The curry sauce had been delightly flavourful and aromatic; it came with flat soft noodles, crispy noodles, various pickles, and a side of intensely hot chili oil. Lately, however, this has changed; the curry sauce is flat and lifeless, the pickles are missing, the flat noodles are gone and only the crispy noodles remain, and there's no chili oil anywhere - if I hadn't had a bottle of Sriracha at home it would have had no heat whatsoever. And crispy noodles are fine as a garnish, but not as the bulk of the dish - it's like eating soggy potato chips. This was my favourite dish a few months ago, but I couldn't even finish it last time, it was so bland.
The Pad Thai is topped with a mound of sad, wilted vegetables - overcooked broccoli, cauliflower, baby corn. The noodles themselves had no flavour except the hot sauce and lime juice I added on my own.
I gave them three tries after noticing the change, but it's not getting any better. It's time to find another Khao Soy purveyor in Logan Square.
I dont know but i think we're going to make this our to go thai place.
A. It's the closest one to our house
B. We've had several meals from here and they've all been pretty decent
C. They're cheap!
They may of gotten new owners because one of the first times we were there it looked a lot darker and dingier- but having just gone there tonight It looks so much better then it did a couple of years ago. It has bright orange walls, and awesome seats in the window (we always sit up there because you feel like you're the display) and the food is a little better. It's a family business! so knowing what that's like I understand where they are coming from. I'm sure if there was anything wrong with your food you'd just have to tell them.
Really great Thai lunch specials. $6.25 for a meal
The meat is certainly above average. I also really enjoyed the sweet and sour soup that came with it. the egg rolls were only so-so.
The fresh spring rolls were even worse.
They do deliver and also offer sushi.
seaweed salad was dry
sushi was aaaght.
Dinner was not as good.
This place is really cheap, lunch specials with lots of choices.
A lunchbox special got me an egg roll, soup, entree and jicama for garnish.
Also have sushi which is a bonus. Service was pleasant.
I'll be back.
I finally had the opportunity to give Spice Thai a shot after almost a year of it staring at me a block from my house. It looks like it had been recently updated from past reviews I've read. I ordered the beef fried rice, which the beef was on the chewy side for my tastes. Also while we were waiting for our carry-out, they gave us water which was nice, but it was a little on the sulfury side. Nothing wrong for a late night delivery dilemma, but I could have been more impressed.
Yeah, ok. It's a Thai place in Logan Square. So it is automatically going to get my business. It's either this or Charley on Armitage now that Sai Mai is closed. But Spice beats both of those pretty easily anyway.
I got about what I expected or hoped for as far as value. I went in to order and pickup. The service was really fast and friendly. The room looked nice enough where I'd want to eat there. I got a menu to take home and saw that they have a fairly extensive sushi and maki portion on the menu as well. And since they deliver, it's a sure bet I'll be calling sometime this winter. This is a great food option considering the lack of Thai and Japanese in the area.
The food was pretty decent, but I'll reserve judgment until I try the sushi.
Just tried some delivery from here. Ordered through Grubhub and it was at my door in 45 min, just under the estimated time given.
My first impression was that the entree size was a bit small, but given their slightly lower prices I guess that shouldn't have been a surprise.
Here's what I tried:
Crazy Noodle (with beef): Nice wide rice noodles with bean sprouts, tomatoes, basil leaves, jalapeno, bell peppers, carrots and pea pods.
Three Musketeer Roll: Crabmeat, tamago (sweet omlet), inari (fried tofu) all rolled up.
Salmon Skin Salad: Big chunks of salmon skin with scallions, avacado and cucumber drizzled in spicy mayo and eel sauce.
Overall, I'd say that this place churns out some decent Thai food. I don't think I'd seek it out or anything, but if you're in the area and have a lust for some Thai then go for it. I think I'll stick to Thai Lagoon for my local Thai fix though.
When I moved half a block away from this place, I knew that good or bad, I was going to go there a lot.
Luckily, this place is mighty good.
I usually order a noodle dish, and while the Lad Nar was a bit off (they gave me the sauce in a different bowl than the noodles, chicken and broccoli - ??) all the other noodle dishes were tasty, fresh, and just enough food to fill me up without stuffing me. I recently tried the fried rice with tofu and, as I am NOT a fan of tofu, I found it pretty damn good, not that greasy, and very delicious. And the price is not too bad either. I've paid more and I've paid less, but you do get what you pay for, and Spice still gives a good deal.
I must admit, I usually order for pick-up. Once I went in to sit down for their CHEAP AS HELL lunch special, but soon realized that not only did they not have air conditioning, but there was one tiny fan and they left the front door and windows closed. They need to splurge on a window unit if you ask me, as well as a new paint job, if they expect diners to stay.
But for the closest restaurant to my house, this place takes the cake for to-go food.
Best. Thai. Ever. The Spice hits the spot every time. They have a fabulous amount of vegetarian and vegan options. Try the Idaho Curry, you won't be disappointed! Unless you hate potatoes, then you may be disappointed. The sweet potato tempura maki is too good to pass up.
I truly love Thai food, and this is a great little place not too far from my flat. They have an excellent vegetarian selection, and everything is cooked and seasoned very well. The tofu is cooked perfectly, and not too greasy. I love the sauces, and the tofu satay is outstanding. Try 'The Beach' dish; veggies and tofu with ginger in a coconut sauce.
I have only dined in the actual restaurant a few times, and it's a pretty standard quick bite place. When you order delivery on the phone, they are extremely nice, and thorough. This is a nice, yummy, good home cooking style Thai place.
New Year's eve found me and my guest looking for outside eats - and Friendship Chinese was only serving those with reservations, so we walked down to The Spice.
No line.
No Waiting.
In fact, no other customers the entire time we were there!
We shared a lovely large bowl of vegetable soup, and she raved about her Tofu Rama (she was enthused enough to take a delivery menu home - rare for her!)
I liked my Beef Salad and Chicken Satay. I'd say about average on flavor and portion size. Good enough to go back, though, given the proximity to my vegetarian friend's home - and her approval!
We finally found a good Thai restaurant, the only down side of this place is the delivery time. It took them about an hour in an half to deliver and to be honest I was really upset considering I had worked all day and I was dead tired, but I also wanted my food delivered with out any added human fluids as a bonus. So when I called I was pleasant and they were extremely apologetic both when I called and when they finally delivered!
As far a the food it was great! We had the BBQ pork fried rice...which was great, we ordered a chicken pad Thai and my son loved it, my other son had an order of chicken satay and veggie egg rolls and he enjoyed them very much as well. The only complaint I would have on the food would be that the Tom ka Kai soup(is that how you spell it??) was so hot that I simply could not eat it. Next time I'm ordering it without jalapenos in it!
One of our favorite Thai restaurants.
Good Pad See Eiw
Good Ginger Chicken (My husbands favorite in the city!)
Never too crowded, good service, not too much to complain about.
OK, like many of my reviews (all 4 of 'em. anyway), I'm qualifying my rating as it's just for the curries, which are all I ever get.
First thing many of the paler persuasion folks like myself need to understand is if you want your food "hot" ask for it SPICY, hot just means temperature for many places like this. bonus info given to me by the owner of O Cha (god I loved that place, across from Elbo Room and long gone) was to say "Thai Spicy," then they'll take you seriously.
How not to get taken seriously? Imitate the yutz I saw at Opart insisting he liked "all kinds of hot food, Mexican, Italian, you know, hot!"
So anyhoo, the curries are great, especially the red and the panang, although the yellow Idaho curry is nice as well. It's not as good as Opart, but quite frankly when we went to Arun's once I thought their curry wasn't any better than this (of course, it was 1/100th of the meal).
If there are any better places in Avondale/Logan for Thai I'd like to hear them, but this is quick, dependable, and walking distance- I'd have to agree the delivery is sketchy, I think they have only one guy doing it, and the streets are awful strange in this neck of the woods due to the unusual presence of SW-NE running streets intersecting Milwaukee, which creates very odd little nooks and crannies.
Beyond the curries, I haven't been too impressed. The crazy noodle is OK, but otherwise, ehhh.
But the curries! We eat there at least twice a month for carry-out, I'll be eating there as long as I'm in the hood, which should be quite some time.
I like this place always have and always will.
I've eaten here 3 times now. Once for takeout, twice for sit-down.
The first time I had only sushi. It was excellent. The dragon roll I ate was tasty, well presented, came quick and overall a top notch sushi roll.
The second time here I got take out. A crazy noodle and a tekka roll. It's no wonder this place does a ton delivery and take out business because the noodles are awesome and it's the best Thai restaurant for miles.
The third time I came in with my girlfriend. We were in the neighborhood and told her I had a great place that she had to try. We got a crazy noodle, spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, and a philadelphia roll. All of the food was really awesome. The service could be a bit quicker and more attentive, but I was in no rush.
It's not in my neighborhood, but if it was it would be my go-to Thai place. If you like Thai and live in the area - you're lucky to have it. I'll keep going in there when I'm in Logan Square, and I'll go out of my way for it from time to time.
I knocked a star off for service. You'd think being that we were the only 2 customers in the joint we'd be serviced promptly. Nope- as a matter of fact. They were on extra slo' mo.
Youd think the menu had to be FedEx'd or something- it took forever to get to our table.
The appetizers mediocre if that. Crab rangoon... blah! I thought this place was called Spice? Philly sushi roll... blah. Just another reminder that both my boyfriend and me- make some awesome ass sushi at home. The Pad Thai and Pad Se Yew we ordered were OK, but not great!
Someone mentioned there is no good Thai food in Logan Square- I'd rather go to Thai Eatery on Western and Fullerton for good Thai food, over this spiceless and slooooow attempt.
This restaurant really doesn't look like much, but the food is delicious. My husband and I stop in at least once a month. Sometimes when we're feeling lazy we order delivery.. NOT A GOOD CALL. The delivered food has been sub-par every single time we've ordered it. I tend to believe that it hangs out under a heat lamp or something for a while in between cooking and delivering, because its always... a lot less tasty than it is when dining in. The service is friendly but a little forgetful, and the water tastes weird, but its not enough to keep me from going back!
I have had only take out from here....the guy was super nice to my sister and niece and the food was pretty good. Imiss Thai food after living in East Lakeview for eight years....my missing of the Thai food was much greater then I realized and this place made my little heart smile with thier tasty food...
I used delivery through GrubHub and the Pad Thai we got here was disgusting--it tasted like they added some furniture polish to the mix. Blech! However, their sushi was decent and the Pad See Ew perfectly acceptable, but they called us four times to spell the name of our street, and then it took three hours to arrive. So not worth it.
I'm still a fan, but I think the quality is going down. I ordered take out last night and was surprised that my bill was $15 for an entree and appetizer. It's usually about $12. Then I noticed a new menu with "Fusion Thai Food" written on the front. I HATE when restaurants invest some money in new brochures, call their food fusion, and up the prices!

Pretty much your everyday, run-of-the-mill Thai place (in a good way). Pretty good but nothing special. My Panang Curry was very good with loads of chicken. I hate it when Thai joints skimp on the meat so that made me happy. The Tom Yum soup that we got was also loaded on the meat-side and the flavor was tasty as well. My only gripe would be about the Pad Thai that my gf got. It was ... different ... probably because they didn't use any peanut sauce. It tasted a bit bland and the noodles seemed to all stick together, which made it annoying to eat. I definitely would advise getting that dish -- tough luck for all you Pad Thai fans out there.
One other thing: right now they have a promotion where you can get a free order of either crab rangoon or shrimp in a blanket if you order $20 or more for carryout/delivery. We opted for the shrimp in a blanket, which turned out to be six whole shrimps each stuffed inside thin egg rolls. Good stuff. Best part was that they offered the promotion to me without me having to ask for it (I wasn't aware of it when I called). Gotta love a place that goes out of its way to give you food for free.
Do not ever get them to deliver to your house. They do not know to read maps. I think they give their drivers directions on wet noodles. I live like 2 blocks from there. Yes, I am that lazy. I have ordered delivery from them twice and both times (It was 6 months in-between orders) it took them over 2 hours to find my house. Each time, after an hour, I called to tell them to forget it. Each time, a driver showed up my house with cold food asking for money. Each time, I was given the food for free and just tipped the driver, assuming it really wasn't his fault that the owners were dumb enough to hire him. It was the same guy both times. It was very sad. The second time, I was already eating a dinner I made at home.
The food isn't bad. I don't trust sushi from places that seem on the edge of closing down all the time. It always has that vibe when I have been in there, that this could be the last day.
