This was exactly how I pictured it would be, based on the name. The Soup Kitchen is an old, small restaurant that has probably seen it's share of patrons throughout the years. I'd bet that most long-time Sugarhouse residents have a story about this place in their memory. Now I do, too.
I visited on a cool winter day-the perfect weather for soup. My usual go-to is chicken noodle, so I went with that and it was....ok. Nothing remarkable, but it got the job done. I'm unclear on the genesis of the soup-did it come from a can, or is it made from scratch? Not sure. The breadsticks that accompanied it were a step above cardboard. That's saying a lot for me, since I can usually chow down most forms of carbs, but I just couldn't do these.
Service was friendly, which earned a little higher rating than the soup alone. Also, when I was chatting later with some people about the restaurant, someone brought up how delicious the breadsticks are. Hmm, maybe I got a bad batch...or maybe I should take that recommendation with a healthy dose of skepticism. Either way, I'm not sure this will be one I rush back to.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - Amber J.Gulf Breeze, FL433218Oct 11, 2023
I'm so embarrassed to admit that I door dashed food twice in one day from this place. I ordered the grown up grilled cheese with the creamy tomato soup for lunch. It was so delicious that I told my husband about it so we had to order another grilled cheese and tomato soup for him - I ordered the vegetable beef soup for myself. Hands down the BEST vegetable beef soup I've ever had.
If the delicious comfort food isn't enough - then the relatively low prices will suck you in. Seriously a grilled cheese and bowl of soup for less than ten dollars? I'll take 2!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 15, 2023
Ordered a quick lunch on a Monday. Wasn't feeling so good and wanted to grab something quick but not from a chain restaurant. Ordered a Turkey sandwich added bacon, bbq chips and a cinnamon cake for dessert. The price is very economical and everything lived up to the other reviews. It is nothing fancy but it was worth a try.
Didn't get soup. They didn't have a baked potato which is one of my favorites.
Def worth a try. Very straight forward menu and you get as described.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 21, 2023
The small place was a last minute what am I going to get for lunch spot. It sort of looks like a sketchy place when you pull up but when you enter your greeted very nicely! Being a first timer the staff had no problem explaining how to order and answered questions. They don't have an overwhelming menu it's simple. I didn't have to wait long to get my food to go. I tried the cheddar broccoli soup and the chef salad. The salad was very good and I couldn't finish it so plenty for the next day. I was not really a fan of the soup I think it just didn't hit the spot. I loved the piece of bread I got with it YUMMY! I think if I tried this place again it will be for a sandwich. Other than that it's a small cute place.

The Soup Kitchen is a hole-in-the-wall that used to be a daily staple for teenage me in the 90's. I'd come here and hang out with old friends, we'd each grab a bowl of soup and split a sandwich, nosh on the complimentary breadsticks. The food was the same at all their locations, some since closed.
On Saturday at 12:30, we were in Sugarhouse near TSK. My husband and I thought it'd be fun to bring our adult daughter here for lunch. We ordered/paid upfront, then we asked for the bread sticks to go with our soup. The ladies told us they were completely out of breadsticks. :( How do you run out? Make more than you need, not fewer.
The lady gave us a bunch of saltine crackers instead. I've never had that happen in all the times I've eaten here.
We picked a table and sat down. It was apparent that the soup recipes had changed since the last time we'd been there. IMO, the soup wasn't as good by comparison. (Don't mess with a good thing! Change the recipes back!)
The tomato soup used to have the slightest tang, which we'd mix 50/50 with the broccoli cheese soup. This time the tomato soup was overly sweet, and lacked any vegetables. (It used to have carrots, onions, etc)
My daughter said she liked her broccoli cheese soup.
Then our hot sandwiches arrived. Yummy pastrami, soft powdery rolls, nice rye bread, melted Swiss cheese... I am bummed that they no longer add alfalfa sprouts but I'll get over it. They use iceberg lettuce now instead. It was still v delicious, just not AS delicious.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Greg H.San Francisco, CA02Jan 27, 2024
Went there on Saturday 2:50 PM the lady behind the counter was rude because evidently they close at 3PM on Saturdays!!!!
We left and went to Millie's in SugarHouse instead!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Val M.Costa Mesa, CA02Aug 15, 2023
We went here today for the first time for lunch and it was so delicious! I ordered the tuna salad sandwich and my boyfriend got the Italian sandwich and chicken noodle soup. The prices are amazing and we already can't wait to come back for more lunch dates to try more on the menu!

First time there in years. Went primarily for the tomato soup. Big disappointment. Does not have the same flavor and very thick texture. Prefer our homemade version. No longer serving the excellent bread sticks just blah rolls. Sandwich (Italian sub) so so. Had ordered a salad but was substituted as they had no salads.

I've always really liked the soup kitchen. So I'm giving it three stars because most visits are usually pretty good. This last time there was absolutely horrible. The service was really abrupt and I almost felt like I was inconveniencing them. I had to force the lady that serve my soup to smile and she finally did and that was nice. But then the soup was served warm. it tasted like water and there was absolutely no texture. I tried to put a whole bunch of Tabasco in it salt and pepper nothing helped. Ate maybe four spoonfuls and the staff was avoiding eye contact with me so I just thought what the heck I spent four bucks on some crappy soup stale breadstick but, I have enough left over to go buy a can of Campbell's.
It's always seemed a little dingy and dirty but, this time was particularly unclean. I'm wondering if they're not going out of business or something? I hope not. It would be nice if they stuck around but, they have to clean up their act quite a bit.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cindy J.Salt Lake City, UT74664Mar 31, 2022Updated review
Why would an organization take their signature item off the menu -- breadsticks? Charge for them, whatever. I don't think it is a good marketing strategy to eliminate what has put you on the map as an institution for a generation or two.
And now, no broccoli cheese soup?
It has been hard to order BC soup off the delivery menu throughout Covid -- you had to go in to the sandwich menu and find it as an add-on item. If ordering slumped, that is why. I did bring this glitch to the attention if the business a couple of times to no avail.
Sorry to see the end of an era.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 7, 2018Previous reviewAlways great soup & breadsticks and sandwiches are great too Christian just made a garden avo for me.
