The best Iraqi owned, Mexican made, burgers in town. Yeah you could blow 20 bucks a head and get something fancier, but if you want a veggie cheese burger and some chili cheese fries, or anything else on a standard short order menu from a stationary street side shop, Smokehouse is a sure bet.
Heads up though, due to economic changes and the increasing expense of securing the classical architecture of the shop from the ex-con douchebags passing from Oakland to Richmond and back looking for potential victims, they have changed a bit since the new ownership. A friend was killed down the street for nothing, and after a 40oz, some crack, and Jack in the Box, that OG eyeballing you knows you have cash, so you should keep the following in mind.
1) Don't go alone after 10PM without your badass girlfriend unless you have a CCW or a Tapout shirt.
2) Don't order high on drugs, forget your number, and waste everyone's time complaining they got your order wrong.
3) Don't bitch and moan and ask for free food and discounts you cheap bastard, because they don't even do that at 1/4 lb Burger for a brother, let alone here for a dumb Cal student. Sorry dude but civil rights doesn't mean free fries. (see #2)
4) Bring cash because they don't take cards.
5) Call in your order ahead of time, even if 5 minutes beforehand, because no one wants to hear your pretentious questions about whether the veggie burger is a garden burger, boca burger, or a sysco veggie patty, or whether it's cooked separately and that way you'll have plenty of time to squirt ketchup all over yourself.
6) They don't make lactaid milkshakes so figure out another way to mainline sugar if you are lactose intolerant.
7) Make sure you ask for real cheese on your chili cheese fries, because A) if you want nacho cheese you can buy a cup at 7-11 and guzzle that nasty shite another time, and B) they will do anything to lower operating expenses without removing items from the menu. -

You know those hole in the wall burger joints that always have good burgers and a bunch of milkshake flavors? This is one of those!
Chili cheese fries were delicious, and the cheese burger had a nice char taste to it that reminded me of my dad's hamburgers. I also had a butterscotch milkshake and it was so thick I had to initially eat it with a spoon, yum!
They have plenty of tables both inside on the covered patio and outside, as well as a little grass area with picnic benches. I'm definitely considering bringing my own picnic blanket next time and just setting up in the grass.
Only downfall is they don't have some items I was craving, specifically a marshmellow milkshake, bacon for a bacon burger, and onion rings. -

As simple as simple gets. This is pure Americana. The menu, posted on the wall outside, is maybe ten items long.. Toppings are limited - don't starting looking for avocado, foi gras, and truffle infused olive oil. If you upgrade your burger to a "deluxe" and you get lettuce and tomato.
Perhaps the extra deluxe comes with a plate as well.
I've had food remind of people and places, but never of time. One bite and I'm inexplicably transported to the 50s... Images of classic Fords, Bobby Soxers, Malted Shops and, umm, segregated drinking fountains. There's something occasionally wonderful about a limited menu at a place that does one or two things, but does them really well. Sometimes less is more. -

They only sells burgers and fries, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they taste bad and are grossly over priced. They charge to add extras like: lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo?!?
Im not going to waste my time, but stay away. -

I work in the neighborhood and there aren't too many places to really grab a bite for lunch that's walking distance. I'm usually stuck eating at the hospital or wholefoods.. I've been to the smokehouse twice before.. The first time i ordered a cheeseburger with everything on it and when the lady taking my order told me what everything was she failed to mention relish.. I wasn't pleased with that... This second time around I thought I'd give it a shot and this time I told them to hold the relish on my cheeseburger.. I ordered it to go to eat at the office.. The burger buns were soggy and the patty was pink.. I took two bites and dumped it in the trash.. I also ordered French fries which were burnt.. Iam sad to say I won't be going back for burgers or fries!!!!

What I had:
Double cheese burger
fries
lemonade
Uh, I can think of one phrase that perfectly sums up this burger: home-made BigMac. Honestly, this burger tastes just like the BigMac, except the bun is toasted, the meat is a tad juicier and there's no third bun in the middle. Literally a bigger, better BigMac (and let's face it, BigMac is pretty damn awesome already).
To be honest though, from a burger joint I had expected thicker patties. That was perhaps the only thing that kept the burger from being perfect. Everything about this place screams homey, grilled-in-my-backyard. Nothing bad about that either.
The fries were thick wedges. Freshly deep fried and extremely big in portions. These fries won't make you scream "orgasmic!" but they get the job done.
Lemonade was just your typical lemonade. -

I really wish I could recommend this place. I like the old school hamburger standiness of it, I like the outside seating, I even like the location--every single block of Telegraph Ave. from beginning to end is great for people watching. But the food is pretty bad. Greasy, overpriced, bland. I'd go just about anywhere else for a burger before coming here.

I come here when I simply want a good cheeseburger, fries and milkshake.
I park, order my food, five minutes pass and then I dip. It has an ambiance that is it's own... walk up and just order your food. It's not Barney's, therefore you don't get Barney's prices. Hey, there's a time and place for everything. Plus, don't fret my pet if you want choices?? There are a bunch of other gut busting options available that don't hurt your wallet. I'm sure they're all great but I just stick with the cheeseburger. When I'm really feeling guilty about my choice of cuisine, I cut out the fries... but, never the shake!
FYI, missing one star bc I'm spoiled by the amount of milkshake I get from Chubby's Freeze on Hegenberger. Yes, I'm a milkshake fiend!! -

I am OLD...........
I first went to The Smoke House when I was in the 3rd grade and attending Bentley School on Benvenue. It was around 1955.
I had not been back for about 3 years. I went for lunch on Friday and it was EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS EVER! Excellent Hamburger, fries and super milkshanke. And everyone working there is kind, considerate and friendly. WOW! what a treat, Exactly the same except the new tables are more comfortable. They cook the meat the way you request an the flavor is outstanding like a home barbeque. -

Hmmm... This place is out of the way for me... I live in the east bay. So it's not super awesome where I would make a special trip to go. But if I'm ever in this area, I *like* to go. It's not really like anything we have over here... For some reason, no one is really taking advantage of the charbroiled burger market over here. Anyway, I digress, a burger here is basically two really toasty buns, ketchup, mustard, relish and onions are standard. Everything else is extra. It all starts to add up... But one order of fries is enough for two people. Refills cost extra. Everything is extra, seriously. It's like they're stuck back in 1951... Maybe I'm just stuck in a modern CA state of mind that enjoys the luxuries of extras being free...
ANYWAY, like I said, this burger is good enough to make me stop/plan a stop to eat there, so it's worth a try. -

I'm not sure why they go by "The Smokehouse." Their thin pattied double deluxe cheeseburgers and tasty shakes require no smokehousing. Smoke briefly escaped some hidden chimney, but either it's purely perfunctory or they're running coal generators. The outdoor seating features picnic tables shielded by brilliant red umbrellas adjacent to a tiny sea of grass. The burgers are well priced and the french fries served generously. If you want to go "Deluxe", add .60 and you get lettuce, tomatoes, and onions.

This is one of the best burger spots I've ever been to. It's been here forever and I hope it stays forever. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is about this place that's so great, but it just is. The buns are toasted to perfection, great fries, awesome prices...and it's just old school awesome.
In fact, I'm going to give this place the highest possible compliment that can be paid to any restaurant in the East Bay: it's worth driving on Ashby Ave. to eat here. Yeah, that's right, I said it. It's true. -

I was somewhat suprised at the reviews that this place has gotten because I don't think its as awesome as everyone else seems to think. I find this place very average and overplayed. This is the type of place that you will find cloaned all over the world, yet it claims to be different, it claims to be of higher quality and status. There are pros and cons to this place as well as every other place but I believe the cons outweigh the pros.
Cash only? Really?! Its 2011 people, and I find that this establishment makes good money (it is open very late and around Berkeley so that should tell you enough) so why would it be cash only? Because they dont want to invest in a machine or pay more fees? I think that unless a business is a tiny mom and pop shop that is a small family owned business that having the option to pay by card is a NECCESITY.
I found that the food was mediocre. Its pretty much just fries, chili, hot dog, or hamburger. You can mix and match with chili or no chili. I opted to try the chili fries and asked for the chili on the side, to hear that I would have to buy them seperately for a cost of $6.00. That is a way to save them money? I dont want seperate orders, I just want the chili on the side! So alas, that is too difficult of a task for these people so I ordered fries (roughly $3.00), and a chili dog (roughly $4.00). I was dissatisfied with the food when it came out. I dont think it was worth $7.00. Why would you pay $3.00 or a small thing of fries?! Why would you pay $4.00 for an oscar meyer hot dog and can chili?! All of the food was literally straight from Safeway and I wasn't impressed.
Maybe their shakes or burgers are great, but this place hasn't given me enough ommpfh to come back again so sorry I won't be trying anything else on the menu. Why would I even need to when there is better and cheaper places than this all over? -

Berkeley, CA
Totally old school and tasty but this is a cash-only joint and that's kind of lame. Great fries, burgers and dogs plus it's got the 1950's vibe for sure. Be warned, it's not the place to be on a really cold night - they have heaters but it's chilly...

Redlands, CA
Great burgers, great fries, a short walk from my place. What more could I ask for? The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because they completely burned the outside of the buns to my girlfriend's chili cheese burger. She said that it kind of ruined the taste of the burger. I can understand charring the inside of the bun a tiny bit, but not the outside.
Other than that, my experience with this place has been quite positive. I won't let one little mistake deter me from ever going back. I will definitely be back.
Oh and be sure to bring cash. -

I love the grilled chicken sandwich and the fries. It may be a tad more expensive than it should be (my meal always seems to cost a dollar more than the menu plus tax), but they make up for it by staying open late.

I've been going to the Smokehouse ever since I was little, and it hasn't changed a bit. They have the best milkshakes (many flavors) and I love their cheese fries. They are open really late which is great if you want something to eat late at night besides fast food.

Cash only. Had to hike down to the liquor store to use the atm then hike back for an ok burger. Three ladies, probably related were gossiping over the grill the whole time, that's fine and dandy but maybe less of that could have provided a better product...just say'n.

CASH ONLY. No bathroom.
Love this place! Great food, fast service, lots of places to sit.
Worst part are the people who come here and loiter. But that seems to be a common thread in California... people ruining everything for everyone else. -

Hell yeah, I want french fries at midnight. And not cardboard Jack In the Box or McDonald's ones, REAL ones made out of potatoes, man.
Basically, this place made me the happiest fatty in the east bay. It was quite an honour to live a block away, indeed. Barely any places around the area are late night joints, and what better to kickstart your late night creativity than with fried goodness.
The fish and chips aren't half bad either. And according to my old roomies, the burgers and malt shakes are well worth the prices. -
Review from Dan F.
Oakland, CA
All in all I like this place. The service is usually friendly and I rarely regret getting grub from here as it is usually late at night and more appealing than the fast-food alternatives. With that said, it is a bit pricey for sure.
Chili cheese fries ($3.75) with jalapeno ($.60 extra) - over $4 with the added jalapeno. I am never displeased with this, regardless of the cheese and chili quality as I find them just fine and befitting of this item. The jalapenos are icing and can't imagine the item without them.
Double cheeseburger ($4.40) with the "deluxe" toppings (lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise for $.60 extra) - always good despite the thin patty. A bit runny with the sauces but I'm always satisfied.
Shakes ($3.25) - always satisfied with these thick shakes. A myriad of flavors and they're always grub. A tad small but makes up for it in thickness.
Grilled cheese sandwich ($3.00) - make your own. The last time I got this it came in a burger bun and was bland as hell. The only thing I regret getting and have never repeated.
Service - I only know the late night crew and for the most part they are friendly. As they are open until a little past 1, the food is damn good enough for me.
What prevents me from giving this place 4 stars is the price. You can walk out of there with cheese fries, a double cheeseburger with "deluxe" toppings and a shake and get little of your $20 bucks back if you tip. If the prices were lower, in conjunction with the ability to grub late and be pretty tasty, this would have gotten a 4 star. -

I was meeting my friends at "The Smokehouse" on Telegraph. A smoke house on Telegraph? Why did I not know about this? I ask if it's Looneys and they respond no, although they admit that they do not know if the place has a name. When I finally get here, I am amazed that I haven't found this place sooner! Cheap and amazing fast food? Uh, hello, win!
I got some chili cheese fries, which were made really quickly and tasted amazing. The cheese sauce is ridiculous and they just slather it on! My friends raved about their burgers and their fish and chips and I'll definitely take their word. I almost wanted to grab some for myself, if only I had the appetite to do so after inhaling my cheese fries.
I hate that the place is kind of awkward to get to and the fact that the place is cash only. Yet, this place makes up by being cheap and satisfying some of my deepest and most large fatty cravings!! -

I have been visiting this local establishment for a VERY long time--like since 1990. I moved away from Berkeley in 2003 and thus my visits came to a grinding halt. I decided to return yesterday as they were the only non-fast food burger joint open on a Sunday that I could find...I wish I hadn't returned.
Maybe my memory colored their food in a better light, but I don't recommend this location for those seeking a BURGER. If it's late and nothing else is open, sure go visit. If ANYWHERE else is open, don't go here. Their price point/value and taste simply no longer make them one of my favorite burger joints.
First the good: their fries were delicious. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make decent potatoes in boiling oil so whatever.
Their burgers are really a sad excuse for a burger. The patty is very thin. They also rip you off for toppings. So ketchup, mustard, pickles and relish are included but a slice of tomato, lettuce and mayo are 60 cents? Now if you got a nice slice of a great tomato, a leaf of lettuce, and mayo, then that would be one thing. No you don't. The lettuce is that shredded up crap that falls out of your burger the minute you pick it up. It's not even in strips but in tiny confetti pieces. If you're going to charge me almost $5.00 for the burger itself, at least make it worthy of the price.
Like I said, if this is your only option--it's better than nothing but I'd rather go down the street to a fast food place that is open 24 hrs than suffer their terrible burgers again. At least I know THERE I will get a better value. -

This place is a gem! I've going here since I was a child. I frequentlly make a special stop when I'm in the area and want a quick bite. It's old fashioned in a good way and the menu is basic: hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, drinks along with a few variations. The prices went up a couple of years ago but to be fair, they were way too low.
What makes this place outstanding is that they use Miller's footlong hotdogs and hamburgers (Miller meat packing is located in Oakland) which are cooked on a grill. The fries are excellent with generous portions and can easily be shared. The staff are great, items are cooked to order so you may have to wait when busy but it's so worth it. The place has atmosphere, people from all walks of life come here. It's on Telegraph and a lot of Berkeley students eat here but if you veer too far down Telegraph it starts to get really nasty so I'm always alert to my surroundings especially late at night. I'm so glad they are still in business as it's so hard to find a good dog these days! -

While they have a "fantastic" burger, I have to give them one star for having a blithering fool for an owner/manager. I wonder what school of business dictates that quietly charging $1.00 extra for "lettuce and tomatoes" creates repeat business?
Personally, when I notice the price is suddenly a dollar more than I was anticipating and the extra charge isn't even on the menu, I DON'T COME BACK AND SPEND THE $500 I WAS PLANNING TO SPEND OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
What a stupid ploy. -

Those milk shakes are as thick as they come (That's what she said). And this place is open late night, so that's a plus! What more can you ask for? A burger joint open 'till 1:30 in the morning, huge burgers, greasy ass fries, and shakes that'll take hours to finish. But remember, CASH ONLY!

Eh. I stayed away from this place for a very long time. I would say.. about 7 years for a good reason. That first time I tried this place, my burger was charcoal black. Finally conjured up the nerves to give it another go.. It's been standing in that corner for that long, it must have improved right? Well... Not much... The burgers are still burnt, but not charcoal, so that's a step up, the strawberry shake tasted like vanilla but with a pink hue. The chili cheese fries were decent though. Maybe in another 7 years, they'll stop burning their burgers completely and give a juicy patty.

I and a friend failed to complete a night adventure from SF to Berkeley to visit a secret place I'm not allowed to talk about (the entry code wasn't valid any more.) As consolation, we took a neighborhood walk. I enjoyed the bike boulevards and tree lined yards that my part of SF lacks, and we went past the co-op known as Cathaus, which you enter through a notably cool wood gate that looks like a cat's face. (I wish it had been day so I could get my picture with it.) A block or 2 down, we found Smokehouse.
It's a standard, low-rent, neighborhood burger stand that looks like it's been there forever, with generations of high school kids carving their names in the outdoor picnic seats and late night crowds filling up on good grease with their booze. The food is exactly what you can expect from such a joint. At least they have 3 times as many variations as a mickey dee's would (chili cheese style, or a dozen unnaturally neon shake flavors.) The orange freeze sounded particularly good (orange soda and orange sherbet.)
Decent job with the fries- fat, crispy and perfect amount. My veg burger was fried to a nice texture as well. I recommend the deluxe with the works (catsup, mustard, relish, mayo, onion, lettuce and tomato.)
Apparently the place livens up in early AM hours, but it was perfectly deserted when we 2 mysterious explorers came. We left it the same way and headed back towards Bart, not super impressed but well fed. -

I find myself drawn to the Smokehouse, especially on a midwinter sunny day, as they have that Bay Area rarity: outdoor seating. Even though the view is of Telegraph Ave, they do have nice picnic tables and a little cheery patch of grass.
I just wish the food was better.
Today's cheeseburgers had some very odd cheese...made me wonder if they had poured sticky nacho cheese on them? Really inedible actually. The meat was OK - and actually broiled or grilled. The fries failed, floppy, limp, sodden, all the bad french fry adjectives one can think of came to mind. The girls had chili cheese fries which also contained said limp fries and odd, tangy and sticky cheese that no chili could make up ,for so no wins there.
So, only positives were a good chocolate shake and sunny outdoor seating. Smokehouse, I think we're done. -

hey picky eaters! is your persistent suspicion of all foods international preventing you from reading my often hilarious reviews? tired of your friends trying to split the sushi bill when they got the chef's selection and you had one measly california roll? looking for just some good ole american grub? well look no further than the smokehouse.
bring your cash (no credit cards); but you won't need much, since it's super cheap. often open until 1:20am on weekends, some are tempted to turn to the smokehouse solely in times of inebriation, but let me tell you this, you are severely limiting yourself, sir! the smokehouse is perfect when hungover, broke, a college student, or any combination of the three. but i digress.
it is also an excellent choice for anyone craving food from the poodle skirt era - double burgers and chili fries and shakes so thick they get stuck in the straw. no it's not organic, no it's not local, no it's not in your diet. but it is freakin' delicious, and a berkeley staple. and with places like blake's on telegraph and mario's la fiesta closing down left and right, i'm happy to support this establishment which has seen so much history, because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO. well, that and they have chili cheese fries.Listed in: diners, drive-ins, and dives

I got the double cheese burger with the deluxe toppings (lettuce, tomato, and mayo) without the deluxe toppings it would of only came with mustard, ketchup and relish. I need my mayo on my burger so the extra .60 cents was worth it. I liked the burger because they toasted both sides of the burger bun, so it had a real nice toasty taste to the whole burger. It was nice fat and juicy, they do it real old school so the burgers came in a little wax paper bag. I also got an order of the cheese frys and that was very tasty. They use real nacho cheese on the frys so they go together very well. My burger was 4.40 w/ deluxe toppings it was 5 bucks and my cheese frys was 3.50 so my meal was under 10 bucks.
The place looks real nice, it had a old burger joint feel. Alot of benches outside near the big lawn and more park benches inside. Service was pretty on point. There was a kid taking the orders and a old guy making the burgers, things went well. They get pretty busy so plan on waiting a little.

I've been going to Smokehouse since before I lost my virginity. I like to order my food and then run off to eat it in my car like I did something naughty, like lose my virginity.
It's just a damn good cheeseburger dripping with special sauce and accented by a toasty bun. The fries are good, too. And it's open late, which makes it a great drunk munchies option.
The people watching kicks ass.Listed in: Drinking in Berkeley
