Had an enjoyable dinner with my friend N. The onion cakes were really good, and so were the walnut prawns. The star of the evening was the cilantro pork, but it was missed named, the cilantro was Thai basil. That was okay. It was very tasty and I would order it again
I plan to return to see if the bar is as good as people say it is. N. and I were going to usher at Woodminister and the stairs are steep and I would not want to be tipsy.
I just met some colleagues here for dinner and drinks...walking into the place, i realized that it is actually a restaurant/bar...with a dive bar feel to the place. the service was very friendly and attentive, but definitely a more relaxed feel to the place overall. we ordered the 3pepper steak and kung pao, which are pretty good. i have to admit i was a bit surprised.
maybe i looked at it more like gourmet bar food, but i enjoyed the dinner and the relaxed atmosphere.
I have been hit or miss with this place. Lately we have been using the delivery service which isn't bad once they figure out where you live. The food is average but consistent which is a good thing. Its a good stand by.
C'mon... Chinese food? It's more than that.... Hey, it's a DIVE BAR! Enjoy the food but enjoy the LOCAL bar patrons... Some play dice games and try to avoid certain other patrons, who can be annoying (such fun drama). Really... the food is decent, owned by a family (whose fun daughters bar tend in the evenings). I am working towards being that "regular" annoying bar patron right now....
In Montclair, is there anything better?
I've come to realize that there is no "real" Chinese food in America. The culinary traditions of China are far to vast to fit into a restaurant that would have mass appeal in the United States...even in the Bay Area.
That said, Silver Palace does a nice job of representing the standard dishes that us dumb ass Americans have come to think of as Chinese. The real gem here though is the full bar, and a certain sexy lady behind it.
Beware the Silver Palace Mai Tai!
The worst. I think they drown everything in giant vats of Heinz tomato sauce - or at least it tastes that way. The one dish that is tolerable, if you have to eat here (and why would you want to do that after reading my review?) is the singaporean rice noodles.
It's basically Chinese food for white people who think PF Chang's is too ethnic.
You'd think Montclair could have a decent Chinese restaurant, and I seem to remember that 15 years ago, this place was. But now it's pretty awful. The decor is so retro cheesy that it's kind of fun to walk in and take a peek. We're talking a classic ratty bar, complete with aquarium and freestanding firepit for "ambience". I feel like some guy in polyester and gold chains should be trying to pick me up.
I live nearby so if I'm not feeling good and am jonesing for wonton soup, I'll order it from here purely for convenience. I avoid the rest of their menu.
There's a very good Thai restaurant (Pagarung) just a block away, so they get my local "craving Asian food" business instead.
Don't expect to "get" The Palace if you only go in once or twice. My wife and I started going here about once a week and have come to enjoy chatting with the patrons and family who owns the place. The food is fine. The bar? Outstanding. Wendy makes a great Hangar citron martini and several other drinks as well. The place is much homier and, blissfully, quieter and nicer than the noise factory up the street that is Crogan's. To steal the Warriors tag line: The Silver Palace, it's a great time out.
Based on the enormous plate of garlic eggplant I got for the lunch special, this is a good place if you want a lot of food which is only average.
I suspect that their regular menu offers better food.
The food and service is awesome. The steamed salmon and salt and pepper prawns are the best.
Another plus is the full bar, if you like rum you have got to try their Mai Tai.

I've been going to Silver Palace for alomst a year now. Every time I go I am less impressed. Perhaps it is that I have switched to take out. The bar always looks like a good time, but I've never gone for a drink. I'm going to try the place down the road at the Redwood Rd exit in the Safeway shopping center.
Where else can you get good Chinese food that has a a full bar? I have to agree the Mai Tais are goooood. The service is fast and friendly and if you live in the area delivery is an option, but I like to dine in because I am always good for a drink or two. I always order the salmon cakes, salt and pepper calamari (or crab if it is in season), rice claypot, and the black peppered beef.
This place has a great chicken dish. I can't remember the name of it, but it comes with 3 kinds of chicken. I go here for this alone.
Silver Palace is spitting distance from my house and is really pretty good. Their food is what you expect from your standard American/Chinese place but in my opinion isnt nearly as greasy as a lot of places can be and their wonton soup is a reall winner, good veggies and the wonton taste very fresh to me. We usually pick-up but if your going in give yourself time to enjoy the bar it Elvis-errific.
This place has been open for years and I can't understand why. The food tasted like paper dipped in water. Spare yourself. Starve.
The food is average. need to add some chinese rooster sauce to get it right. the guy delivered 2 hours late with the wrong order.
It's not spectacular, but I don't think it's horrible either. We get their delivery once a month or so when we're too tired to deal with cooking. It's just fine.
silver palace is nothing extraordinary, but it's not horrific either. it's completely americanized chinese cuisine, which makes it great for takeout. when you're starving and you want something easy and savory to scarf down while watching a movie at home, silver palace does the trick. last night they even gave me a 2008 "year of the rat" wall scroll calendar. gotta love that. i also greatly appreciate the noodle-to-vegetable ratio in their chow mein (the more noodles, the better in my case).
4 stars for food. 4 stars for drinks. minus 3 stars for crazy 24 hour parking lot. just remember to pay the meter.
