I think my friends love hipsters because this is the second birthday celebration I went to at a dive bar on the east side. The Short Stop is located on Sunset near Alvarado in Echo Park. I went on a weeknight in mid-December, but it was still reasonably crowded. My pale ale beer wasn't too expensive, and I have to give this place mad props for having a dance floor with a disco ball as well as a game room with a pool table, arcade booth, and old school video games (including Pac Man!)

Parking can be a nightmare even in the residential areas unless you get there early.

THIS PLACE CAN SUCK MY BUTT
I used to go to this dump quite often, before the infidels invaded the Silverlake/Echo Park area.  It was a cool bar, always dark, drinks were cheap...
Then it became the hipster hangout, with dancing included on certain nights.  Still- ok.
But now...  ugghh...  Seems that every thug, hoochie, and hoodrat this side of the 562 is flocking to this dump in droves.  Don't get me wrong- the hipsters are a somewhat annoying sort.  But I'd rather be surrounded by a million of them than this new motley bunch.  DJs used to play old school funk, classic grooves...   now, it's 50, Jay Z, etc.  Again- ugghh.
Too bad- this used to be a cool spot.

The Short Stop is my go-to dive bar before Dodgers games.

I've only paid cash here, so I have not experienced any of the credit card troubles that other Yelpers are talking about. Just bring cash and there's one less thing to worry about.

Maybe I'm just not paying attention and/or drunk, but both times I've gone to the bathroom at this place (two separate occasions) I have ended up outside. Apparently the door to the back of the bar is right near the restrooms? Or maybe I'm losing my orientation because I'm half in the bag. Either of these are very possible.

Parking can be iffy... The good thing is that there is free street parking all around this place. The bad thing is that you have to look pretty hard to find a spot. Also, I hope you are good at parallel parking on hills.

Don't forget to hit up the photo booth!

    Oh shortstop - te amo!

     MOTOWN SUNDAYS.

This is where people come to dance like no one is watching. You may catch the occasional too-drunk-to-balance type lurking around the dance floor, but just grip them tightly by the shoulders and explain their fault - they should never come into your bubble, regardless of the James Brown song.

Get there early or you'll be stuck a line!  Especially if it's a Sunday of a holiday weekend like today was. There were many angry hipsters around midnight, so I guess it was not regular.I totally condone safe, enthusiastic dancing on Sunday Motown nights - it reminds me of my club transistor days in Chinatown!

I am a Wyders cider drinker and it's $5 per class here. That pretty moderate for LA - I can dig it!

There was no cover when we arrived at 10 pm, and I don't believe there ever was ( i might be wrong). We took a cab because parking can be challenging - but it will definitely be easier to return home in a cab if you don't need a van. LA has not stepped their cab game up quite yet.

The bar is usually really crowded due to the lack of space around it, but it usually doesn't take that long to get served. Just be a little patient. If you've taken a cab and pre-partied, then you should be good to go!

There aren't a bunch of eating options available unless you get he early enough to eat at el compadre next door - most likely you didn't. Never fear ! The LA DIRTY DOG will rescue you, carnivore!  Pretty sure there aren't any  vegetarian options for this street cart, sorry!

In closing, you must take advantage of the photo booth, and the pool table earlier on in the evening while it's free. There are a few arcade games in the back, but don't bother. The music will drown out the sounds.

The DJ does take requests on Sundays, so don't be shy! Mosey on over to the booth to see what's up - I have seen many a group of people rise up in excited little girl screams when their song gets played.

    Ain't no shame in that!

    Now - BOOGIE.

Thank you for fixing your mistake :)

This bar is cool. Theres a pool table on the back side of the bar, and I guess a photo booth? I didn't see that though, I only peaked in that section while looking for my friends.

There are a lot of large girls here, but the guys that come here don't like large girls.. They will call you fat.. and ugly. I don't know WHY these guys still show up if that's not their scene.. LOL  and there are a lot of weird guys who show up by themselves and try to dance with the large girls. You know, the type like Howard Wolowitz who go to clubs, wait for the girls to get drunk, then prey on the fat girls with low self esteem..

Aside from the douche bags that go here.. If you're just going to be with your friends, it's a big, fun place to go and dance.. that is, if you like electro/techno kinda music..
but they have $5 beers on tap! The door man is cool too. I only suggest that you bring cash unless you tip them extra well on your card.. but I heard that bars charge debit card fees too now.. soo just bring cash lol

Cool little dive bar spot, that some people could easily say its ghetto.  I would say it has a mixture of people, people in polos/collard shirts, hipsters, and goons.  No real theme to the place.  Parking around here can be kind of crazy, they have one lot which is for a mexican restaurant next door and an uphill residential area, which can be an annoying walk when your drunk.

They have a back smoking area and a cool little dance floor.  The night I went they played house music.  The dj seems to really play off the crowd.  There is no cover and security is pretty decent.

Drinks are pretty diesel (strong) for a decent price.  The bad thing about this spot is that sometimes the bartenders will charge a bit extra on your card to add for tip if you don't tip enough, so I mean keep those receipts and don't forget to check your bank statements.  If it wasn't for that I would have given 3 stars.

This place is not for everyone, and quite frankly I would rather just go to a club in hollywood.  I could see this place being extremely fun for some and horrid for others.  I always say its the people who make your night, not the place.

People are cool. They usually have a d.j. spinning the 1's & 2's at night.

Drinks are really good, Bartenders know what they're doing here.

    Security's cool too.

I love this place. Why? Want a chill pool atmosphere? they got a section for you. Want to just sit at the bar and chill? they got another section for you. Want to get up and shake your butt on a dancefloor with a DISCO BALL?!?!? They've got that too!!!
    Drink specials before 10? yes!!!
The ONLY downside: restrooms were iffy, BUT this is not supposed to be an upscale bar so it's expected plus by the time I need to use them I'm already drunk and don't really  mind...
    Definitely recommend!

I dont remember much about this night. It started out FUN and it ended FUN. Drinks were fairly priced. DJ played some good stuff (a bit more techno than I liked), and the clientele was...interesting. Not what really matters though. I was there with friends, had a blast with them and in the end, is that not what really matters? I will be back. Oh and some guy puked all over a girls purse. -random memory of the night.

Horrible experience here.  Came here for a friend's birthday and four angry cholas got up in my face in the ladies room.

I was in the handicapped stall with my friend who didn't feel well.  She was drunk but not sloppy -- she just felt really sick to her stomach.  We were having a time-out in the bathroom stall while she figured out whether she needed to barf or not.  Keep in mind, there are TWO stalls in this bathroom, so people waiting in line still had a toilet to use.  After a few minutes, some girls in line started barking at us, saying we were taking too long (we weren't in there for THAT long).  I ignored them at first.  Finally I opened the door a crack to talk to them and I see the four of them standing there staring at me.  I was like "Hey, just give us a sec, my friend doesn't feel well."  HA!  As if reason, logic, or empathy would make any difference with these miserable women.

In response to my request for a few more minutes in the stall with my friend, three of them gave me epic stink eye and one them got up in my face.  She actually put her hands on me and started barging into the stall.  Unbelievable.  I realized in that moment that these four girls were literally ready to fight me.  What kind of person thinks this is an acceptable way to resolve conflict?  And why was there any conflict in the first place?

I am 28 years old and I have never been in a fight.  Fighting is retarded.  Because I did not want the situation to escalate, I grabbed my friend's hand and dragged her out of there.  So the cholas won -- they got their precious handicapped stall and the satisfaction of knowing they successfully intimidated us, right?

I guess I at least avoided being beat up.  Yay!

The rest of the crowd was a mix of snobby hipsters, creeps, cholos, and the occasional really nice human being.  The bartenders were pleasant.  I give the place one star for the decent staff and the photo booth.

My other friend whose birthday it was had a great time, and that is the most important thing.... but I personally will never go back to this place again.  Ever.

People with grit come here to dance to Katy Perry.

May seem intimidating with the meat market at the bar and girl cliques on the dance floor, but everyone is here to just have a good time.  Don't mind the tattoos and ironic facial hair and the over sized girl screaming that it's her birthday - they are a part of the atmosphere.

DJ plays music that you have your iPod.  Drinks are cheap.  There is no cover on Friday nights.

There are some scattered gays escaping the remixes of Weho and the eclectic-try-too-hard-to-be-different Akbar.  Once again, can we just listen to the radio version of pop music?  Short Stop provides this.

Love bringing groups here.  Line starts building at 11:45, come earlier.  Towards midnight, everyone is approachable - make a new east of west LA friend.

Love that this place has a photo booth but the "soul" night was just 90's music. Went here for dancing but it really seemed like a lot of teenagers. Must have been an off night. The place is pretty cute though and the drink was strong even though the bartender acted like customers were an inconvenience.

We had a fun night there. They have a groovin little dance/lounge room! It wasn't too busy that night, but I could imagine it being hard to enjoy when its busy- its not the biggest place.

We crammed into the photobooth for pictures. They were expensive from what I can remember and the bartender swore she wasn't allowed to give me quarters (but she did- thanks!)

if its relatively calm again, I would go back no doubt!

Don't ever take pictures when you're drunk or horny.  Especially don't do it when you're both.  This photobooth is dangerous.

No, I'm not sharing the photos...

I understand why politicians get in trouble now...

The short stop is a place to chill with peeps, possibly play pool, even though I don't care for pool.

    They have cheap drinks.

Come on a weeknight when the hipsters with the fur stoles stay at home.

I used to love the Short Stop, but that was back in the day when I could go, have a good time, and not worry about my sh** getting stolen.

BE WARNED YOU MIGHT GET PICK POCKETED.

My friends and I went here a few weeks ago and THREE of us got robbed. They took cell phones, wallets and purses while we were on the dance floor.

My belongings were stolen out of my ZIPPED purse that was on my shoulder all night. My other friend's had their stuff stolen out of their purses and pockets.

It's not like anyone was like .. oh hey let me put my purse down in the middle of the bar and come back layyter. Or like oh heyyy I'm super drunk and I'm not awaaaree of anything but the floor. No. We weren't drunk and stuff was stolen that was on our person.

When I reported the theft, the police said that THERE HAVE BEEN A TON OF THEFTS AS OF LATE.

When I called the bar, they could have cared less. I understand that people at bars get drunk and lose stuff, but this is not the case. The bouncer told us that they have been finding empty purses in their trashcans on a regular basis.

The Short Stop and I have a love hate relationship.....sometimes good, sometimes bad!!

My first time there was to celebrate my girlfriends birthday.  The night  went well until it became extremely crowded and made it hard to breathe for my drunk ass!

With the exception of the over crowding, shoving/pushing, and the random asshole who drenched me in beer, this joint is cool for some inexpensive adult drinks and a few hours of dancing!  Ladies don't bother dressing up, .this place it very laid back so save your cute threads for a special night!

Wait!  Did I mention my grown ass molested a 23 year old --- damn alcohol gets me every time - LOL!!

I was only going to give them a 3-star review, but let me give this joint an extra star just for the good time I was told I had!

Hope to see you all there!

Chill spot if you're looking for the rare dive bar with a dance floor. As you would expect, it's poppin after dodgers game since the stadium is near by and the name goes with baseball. But The Short Stop is usually always poppin on weekend nights. Great place for those of you who are like me, want to go to a fun place but not have to shell out lotsa money to have a good time.
The DJ's here usually play pretty good dance music. Regardless, if you're taking advantage of the cheap drinks then you'll be out on the dance floor gettin down no matter what music they're playing. Only negative is the fact that it's pretty small so if you're not a fan of being crowded then you won't be a fan of this place.
Another word to the wise, don't wear nice shoes..they will be destroyed.

The reasons I really like this place are slightly different then the everyone else's - Free Pool from 5-8! That is, except when the Dodgers play (lame).

There are plenty of forms of entertainment here, including a pinball machine, Golden Tee and a photo booth. I'm a sucker for Ms. Pacman which, they have.

They also have $2 PBR and free jukebox plays until 8. Cool atmosphere and plenty of places to stake as your own.  There's never a line for Happy Hour.

It seems most people come here to dance and check out the girls. There's a dance room and a pretty decent DJ but I usually leave at that time. I'm not a fan of large crowds.

This place has a long history, including it's time as a Cop bar, and has gone through many transformations throughout the decades - so I hear. Change is inevitable in a gentrifying culture, so enjoy it while it lasts.

If you're a Dodger fan, this place is awesome. I've been here a few times before, but I just went back with friends on Monday before the game. After enjoying many beers, we walked to the stadium. I'm definitely a fan.

Seriously, how can one argue with me? A dive bar bar full of Dodger fans, 2$ PBR, an old school photo booth, and saving 15 bucks on stadium parking. You can't beat that.

Try to show up before 6. That way, you'll get a parking spot on Sutherland St and a table. The short walk to the stadium is only 10 minutes. Remember, by walking...you are saving yourself 15 dollars and not feeding the greedy McCourts! You also avoid all the traffic leaving the stadium. =)

The drinks are strong and cheap, there are activities such as pool and some arcade games in the back room with some lounge seating, the bar area is cramped but cool if you get a seat as the bar, and there is a dance floor in another room. This was a fun place.

The crowd is pretty cool, there's a photo booth for the people who want to take pictures, they serve alcohol, and they play music.

It's a grungy spot, but in a good way. It's not a fancy joint. If you like divey places, or even just trying them out, you will like The Short Stop.

They did have a couple of relatively less common beers on tap, which I feel typically serves as a prelude to an establishment's positive nature.

The love / hate relationship that has accumulated amongst bar-goers and the Short Stop is not all that surprising. Quite frankly, there are many things to like and dislike about the Short Stop.

First off, the history behind the bar is rather intriguing. Prior to it's current installment, the bar served as a former LAPD watering-hole some 30 years back. Ask any staff member or regular the story behind the bullet hole that remains engraved on the front door. As far as the layout is concern... it is rather spacious. Aside from the bar area, you've got yourself a mini-dance hall, an arcade room (pinball machines, pac-man tables & billiards) and an outdoor smoking patio [no drinks permitted].

The interior decor suites the bar well. The walls are drape with everything from Dodgers memorabilia to vintage beer cans & retro advertisements . On the outside, there are no signs indicating the locale, but it's just a cross-walk away from El Compadre. As far as parking, they offer only about a dozen parking spots out back, so your alternative are the residential streets -- a mission to say the least.

Patrons are a mixture of Hipsters, O.N.R.'s (Original Neighborhood Residents) and everybody else in between. From the times I've frequent, there is plenty of eye candy, so leave your shy-awkwardness (along with your blade) at the door. Speaking of which, don't be surprise if you encounter a line & wait if you plan on stopping by on any given weekend.

Standard brews are on tap. They seasonally carry Newcastle Summer Ale, a plus in my books. As far as staff goes, they move quite efficiently amidst the crowds. The bouncers can be a bit overly aggressive when it comes to addressing crowd control, but that's why they get paid.  Late into the evening (primarily the weekends) the crowds can become a bit massive and 'out-of-hand'. Drunk patrons + limited space = confrontations or entertainment, depending on your mind set.

Sadly I have heard from acquaintances and fellow yelpers prior "difficulties" when leaving a tab or card open (i.e., the final calculation debate). My solution: generally carry cash at any establishment your not familiar with.

Aside from the occasional fielding error, I have yet to experience any major troubles at the Shortstop. The bar really is a hit or miss. Expect either large crowds or Dodgers Stadium (aka. no crowds). Sticking with the baseball analogies, the Shortstop is Echo Park's cleanup hitter -- a home run power hitter with a tendency to strike out on one too many occasions.

Well, you live and die by the long ball.

The DJ sucks on Saturday nights.  In the hundreds of nights I've frequented bars with dance floors I never EVER felt nautious, dizzy, and confused just from music a dj played - and this was in a VERY sober state of mind.  That permanent Saturday night DJ must make it his life's mission to destroy the entire dancing spirit of all humans he comes audibly in contact with.  No matter how many people gave requests, begged or complained about the eratic transitions from one odd song to another or the - quite frankly odd mix of techno with (nursery songs would have been a better choice) old, unheard awful rappers ....he never left his "let's get all these people off the dance floor" strategy in driving a good crowd away with his inability to DJ.

    Anyways, after 2 hours of
waisting our time, me and my 3 other lady friends dragged about 15 other people out of Short Stop and walked over to the LITTLE JOY and danced our hearts out with a DJ who should have probably trained the SHORT STOP DJ.

Now, to be fair, I only know that Short Stop has different DJ's every night.  JUST BEWARE OF THE SATURDAY NIGHT "DJ"!!!!!  Don't waste your time, save your ears from loud, erratic boom booms and go have fun somewhere else!  Life's too short to be at the Short Stop.

    This was a short stop!

I didn't really like it. Why? because it looked like a ghetto club and I had to make line to get in and the music was HORRIBLE!!!! went there on a saturday night and it was very lively. The beer prices were reasonable though, I paid 5 dollars for a newcastle. The bartenders were really good and fast at getting the drinks. They weren't done with one order when they were asking me what I wanted. That was cool. But I would never come back. Even with a slight buzz, I couldn't dance to that awful music: like a mixture of oldies, hip, hop, lounge, trance. I couldn't find the rhythm to it. This place is not for dancing; it was way too crowded too. But if you're looking for a totally random experience or just for cheap drinks, you should go there. Otherwise, go elsewhere.

We went here to dance, and damn it, we danced.

Now, I'm a little embarrassed, but when we first arrived we were trying to get in through the big black doors that face the corner...those aren't the doors :-/ The door is facing the street on the side of the building. Just so you don't look like an idiot while two guys walk past you, scoff and say in their oh so hipster way "the entrance isn't there, its on the side, ugh."

We got there early, around 9:30-10 and it was pretty quiet, which is nice. I like to chill, get a drink without pushing through crowds of sweaty people, before I get my groove on. Now we were the only people sitting by the dance floor (a sunken-in room off the corner of the bar, there is a step down, and yes, I fell, my second faux pas of the night, I wasn't bating so well), and no one was dancing despite the big dark room, just begging for some rug cutting.

After two drinks it really started to pick up. People started dancing, dance floor tables became coveted and the place started to swell with dance circles. The crowd was such a good and crazy mix of young hipsters, middle aged groups of men looking to be sweet on some of those hipsters, and everyone else between. Everyone seemed really friendly (except you girl on the dance floor not dancing and mocking those who were, really? REALLY?)

Now the drinks here are pretty well priced, $5 for a mixed well drink, $8 for martinis, it is echo park, I would be a little shocked if it wasn't in this price range, but they were good, and the bartender we had was really nice, and even remembered our drink orders.

Short Stop is all I have been looking for in dance club, an unpretentious atmosphere that you almost feel you're at a distant relative's wedding, and that the YMCA just might start playing after the next 80s rap song.

The only negative was around 1 the place was so crowded all the fun dancing on that big dance floor had become too much to even move, and more a just general sweaty mass of people, but that is the tendency when a place is fun and well known.

All in all, I will be back here again many times to enjoy some good ole' fashioned boogying

i HONESTLY tried to like this place - I really did.  When we first got in, I kind of glanced around and liked what I saw - in terms of the interior, but the music was just unacceptable (to me).  It was very very ... un-danceable.  The people on the floor were having a great time jumping around (literally jumping up and down) to the music but I couldn't take it.

After drinking our $5 drinks (that, I approve of), we went over to Little Joy - despite my friends protests that it was too ghetto and satisfied our need for hip hop.  It actually got a little ghetto over there (i.e. someone's head was gushing with blood) so we came back over here and I forced myself to join the clearly high/drunk ppl thrashing around.  I had fun overall b/c I was with good company but I definitely don't think I'll be coming back here.

I do have to say the crowd is very diverse and interesting, which is a plus.

FREE and CHILL are my favorite words these days.  Combine to form "frill" perhaps?  Yes.

As a frill bar, I dont have to worry about wearing heels or creating an updo on my cranium (but I can if I want to).  There's a full bar, a dance floor with a disco ball (thanks for not taking it too far with strobe light and fog machine), a slender smoking area, some random standing place with room to place your beer, a photo machine, and... a pretty diverse-ish crowd.  Maybe more chill than diverse.

The music is hit or miss.  I feel like Friday night's random DJ set is off the chain.  It goes a lil something like this:  Magalena, Billy Jean, Wu Tang, Florence and the Machine.  It really challenges my ability to shift dance moves from song to song.   Not a fan of loungy house night, or 70s funk.  I like the variety nights.

Street parking, unless you get there early before the gas station parking fills up and you pay $5 to park there.  There is another hidden parking lot down the street.  I would give you cross streets, but I cant remember.  Follow the other cars?

PS:  If you go after a Dodger game, expect a Dodger crowd and a line to get in.

I usually don't review clubs or lounges but last night was so fun and I realized everytime I go it's fun, hell, why not review it.
Short Stop is part of the Echo Park classic night out route. We were actually headed to Gold Room at 1am but when we saw the frightening line, we all looked at each other and said, "Short Stop!" It was pretty much  a scene out of a stupid college movie.
They have a photo booth and the place is crowded, what more can you ask for?
There is something for everyone here. You can dance (music has never been dissappointing) on the main dance floor,  you can hang at the bar, you can go to the back where its a little more quiet and they have a photobooth and pooltable, or you can stand outside in the back and have a cigarette.
I must warn you, this place is a hit or a miss. Just like Echo Park itself. There are people from all walks of life, local mexicans, local hipsters, people from other neighborhoods looking to have a good time, a few old people, the list goes on and on.

If your a guy and looking to hollar at some chicks, you wont be dissapointed, there are a fair share of ladies looking to have a good time. If your a gal looking to get picked up, I must warn you, you probably will. If you are in town just looking to have a good honest time, hit the dance floor and have some drinks, you will truly enjoy it.

I can't stress enough, you make the night what you want it here. You are in charge, you set the tone and create your environment. Most people here are happy, dancing, having a good time and drinking. No one cares how you look. Ladies, don't get pissed if you get dressed up to the nines and a guy doesn't try to talk to you. He is probably just really having a good time dancing and might be on some drugs. Guys, don't get pissed if a girl doesnt respond to your call to the wild, it's echo park, it's short stop, it's late, she's not an idiot, your looking to hook up.

Best thing everyone can do, is just dance and save the pick up lines for the following day as you walk around the neighborhood sobering up at your favorite coffee shop.

    Enjoy!

This is my 2nd time here in 3yrs & I gotta say that tho it took awhile for me to get my drink orders in on a Friday night two weeks ago, but once I started...it was all systems GO! Also a BIG shout out to the bartenders & management b/c I lost my wallet that night, and within an hour of reporting it missing I got a call from Ron that they found it safe & sound w/ everything still in it! For this (and the affordable drinks) I will DEFinitely be back :)

First time at the short stop : love the music! Funk into 90s R&B into Hip Hop. Fun crowd, with apparently, the occasional wanna-be thug.

But, all in all, mixed crowd with decently priced drinks.

Motown (tonight, Sun) was so much fun!

The crowd was super friendly, and I danced so much!  It was really all smiles, no creeps.  I dig it!  =)
    Plus, no cover.

When a local pal of mine told me we were going to a "quintessential Dodgers pre-game bar", naturally, I vomited into my mouth and contemplated a quick sprint in the opposite direction of this Echo Park watering hole. But with those lousy Dodgers playing my Giants in San Francisco, there didn't seem to be any harm in checking it out. It's a good thing I checked my ego at the bar, because I loved this place!

For starters, I can't believe it's billed as a Dodgers' pre-game spot, as it's as divey as the come. Hipsters from wall-to-wall, an awesome jukebox, retardedly inexpensive drinks, and generally a dark, cavernous spot to find an alcohol-induced escape from the day's concerns. If I lived here, it'd be among the low hanging fruit of go-to bars for an awesome buzz in the 'hood.

They also seem to have food carts that pull up outside on a regular basis. I strutted past a pretty nifty little Mexican food cart that I heard was pretty stellar, but alas, I wasn't hungry enough to scarf down a taco at that particular moment. Next time!
