I absolutely love this place. Very cozy diner, crazy packed on the weekends. fresh foods that just taste like ur grandma made it. I usually get a waffle with fresh strawberries, bananas and whipped cream. I am in heaven! My boyfriend usually gets what ever is on the special board above the pie display case. the sauteed potato for breakfast, Amazing! I had their Mac and cheese for dinner... omg i went to heaven it was so cheesy goodness. U must dine here for good feeling hearty food. =)

No Love for The Shack...this review refers to the Waterford location.
I have never gotten the attraction of The Shack restaurants; their success seems to me largely based on lack of competition and goofy TV commercials. While I am not a fan, up until my last (both most recent and final) visit the food and service were acceptable in a mediocre way. That visit was, however, the nail in the coffin. I took my daughter to breakfast on a Sunday morning. As always on Sunday morning the restaurant was packed, with a waiting line. We sat at the counter. My daughter ordered the waffle with "fresh" fruit and a side of bacon. I picked the combo of French toast, bacon and sausage. We both asked for orange juice to drink. The waitress asked if my offspring wanted strawberries and bananas on her waffle, I assumed these would be in addition to the "fresh fruit." When the waffle arrived it had a heap of syrupy strawberries and browning banana slices. She picked at the fruit and pronounced it "yucky." I tried a couple bites and had to agree it was horrible. The strawberries were clearly NOT fresh, but frozen, sugary goo. The waffle itself, like my French toast, was bland and doughy. The "orange juice" was flavored water, like Tang or Kool-Aid, not even juice from concentrate. We gobbled our bacon, which was ok, and paid the check, eager to get out of this dump. As we were getting ready to leave the manager came by and noticed the barely touched waffle and fruit - and asked if it was ok. We told him, "No, the fruit was terrible." His answer - "Yes, the strawberries we have been getting are really bad." And he walked away.
What kind of restaurant serves food they KNOW is lousy? I can tell this idiot for a fact the Stop and Shop across the street from his restaurant has all kinds of tasty, fresh, fruit. I can't believe he did not offer to at least take the waffle off the bill.
Sooner or later someone else will open a restaurant that serves decent breakfast and The Shack will swiftly become a memory. It can't happen soon enough. The food and service reminded me of why I am so thrilled NOT to live in Southeast Connecticut -

Great little dinner a nice break from the fast food crap chains. I sat at the counter and watched as the wait staff examined each dish was up to par. A couple of times they asked the chef to make tweaks before sending out a meal. The only issue is they have a saying "life's short eat pie", but this could be the first time I wanted desert but wasn't asked. Needless to say I did get the banana cream pie which was fantastic!

My friends and I were on our way home from Mohegan Sun and decided to have breakfast before we continued our drive from Connecticut to New York. Being that we hadn't the slightest idea where to go I used Yelp and based on the good reviews we decided to go there. The place has a cozy diner feel to it and the food was fantastic. I had what was called the "Hot Mess" which over compensated in flavor for the messy appearance. Everything looked picture perfect and the food was amazing. If I'm ever back in the area I will most certainly stop in for another "Hot Mess."

Did a search for a dine while driving back from Foxwoods...excellent choice. First sign of this: line to get inside.
Service was very friendly and welcoming. When I told our waitress that we found them on Yelp she responded: "Welcome! We're so happy to have you!"
Had the Texas toast w/sausage gravy and the Homey Fries. Heart attack on a plate but it was so good. If I'm ever up this way again, I will be stopping by. -

I have been going to the shack since I was little and, even though I now live in Boston, it is still my favorite breakfast spot. It is the place my AP French class went for out pre-exam breakfast, it's where I want to eat on all my birthdays. My mother has stopped asking me where I want to go when I come home because the answer is always the same. It's simple, delicious food, bustling atmosphere, and a a little piece of home.
My most recent visit came after a long a grueling morning of Black Friday shopping. I don't think I was ever happier to see a breakfast sausage and egg sandwich in my life. Cheese-y, carb-y, fatty, restorative. Add a pile of hash browns and a veritable jug of coffee and I was a new woman.I knew every minute I had to spend on the treadmill was going to be worth it. The only thing that I would have done differently would have been to go halfsies with my grandfather. He got a giant stack of pancakes and one bite melted my heart.
The only reason is loses a star is because I miss the old building. The actual "shack." The newer giant, open space means I get to eat there more (as I am not as frequently discouraged by a never-ending line), but it doesn't have the same feel. Oh Shack, you you will always be small, noisy, and cramped in my heart. -

The one and only place for everyone to have breakfast/brunch/lunch in southeastern CT.
Honestly, you can do better in your own kitchen. The prices have been substantially raised since they moved to their new location. I feel like they are always strapped for wait staff as the turnaround time for a water refill or check is a little longer than what is normally expected at a diner.
Items that usually always end up on our table:
Farmer's omelet
Chocolate chip pancakes -

Oh how I miss this place!
Great food, nice people, and just an excellent place to go! I've been here at least thirty times (no exaggeration here!) and I have never been disappointed.
The wait might be long but that's because it is a great place. Prices are very reasonable. I don't think you can go wrong here...everything on the menu is great and they are very flexible and will accommodate you however they can. -

One of the best places for breakfast in the CT shoreline. I can't speak for lunch or dinner, but on Saturday or Sunday, there is almost always a line out the door for breakfast. The wait is definitely worth it and the food is excellent. My favorites are the Shanty (pancakes, scrambled eggs, and home fries) or the Mess (homefries with a everything).

Get the cornbread!! I have only gone ehre for breakfast but it is really great. I usually get "The Mess". Service can be slow on busy Sundays. You have to wait sometimes. So, don't go here when you are in a hurry.

Really great diner food. We've only ever come here for breakfast but it's always great! "Thumbs up" on the pancakes & home fries.

Aptly named. Good comfort food. I once had fried clams and they were delicious.

Found this place by accident driving home from Mohegan Sun once and now my wife and I stop here any time we're driving down 95 returning home to NYC. Love the food and the people...just wished the pie lady wasn't on vacation when we stopped by last weekend.

This place is reasonably priced and the food is always fantastic I've been for dinner a couple of times, the meatloaf is enough to eat for two people. However, if you're going to the Shack you have to go for breakfast, They make excellent omelets and home fries and a very good Eggs Benedict. If you want a good cheap breakfast this is the place to go, just try to beat the crowd, and if you can sit at the counter, you'll be eating in no time.

The Shack is GREAT! The food is cheap. The line (which everyone whines about) is never REALLY that long, and it gives you a chance to get hungry. The portions are huge. Since they've moved to the new location, I would say the service has become sketchy, but I'm sure things will come back together - it was always great before the move. On rare occasions we will wait for something, but that is rare, and never with any of the seasoned waitresses who have been there forever. In reading someone else's post I will agree. I love my coffee and I HATE the coffee at The Shack. I still love this restaurant, though!
DO TRY the Popeye Benny, but order it on a GRILLED bagel. OMG It is delicious! -

Excellent breakfast joint, never a lengthy wait for the typical morning line. Food is superb but service can sometimes be slow during rush hour

The BEST breakfast in southeast Connecticut. PERIOD! Service may be kind of slow sometimes, usually because there are so many people going there for breakfast. If you like potatoes/home fries, try the ones with the gravy and chesse they are UNBELIEVABLE! Can't remember what they're called Dixie potatoes or something. MMMM.
