I have eaten at the Sandwich Place many times. I really like the Mom and Pop's stores, rather than the chains. I have eaten the "Bad Boy" (roast beef), combo, BBQ chicken, Tuna, Pastrami, and have always had an excellent filling sandwich. Prices are very low for a fresh sandwich. Every couple of weeks, the owner and his Mom made real roast turkey sandwiches.
The owner is my homeboy, so he gets five stars.
The Sandwich Place gets 3.5 stars. The sandwich was really good at first - large, delicious, very filling - but as the day went on I felt thirstier and thirstier. Like ridiculously, not normal amounts of thirstiness. I ordered turkey, avocado, bacon, cheese, on a dutch crunch ... so maybe there was a lot of salt in the bacon, but I'm already on my 3rd Sigg water bottle refill.
My sister ordered the tuna melt and said that it was just ok.
I don't know if I'll come back yet. If I find myself in the Mission I might. The people working today were super super friendly!
After all these years in SF (many of them living in the mission) i know i've walked past this place literally HUNDREDS of times. how...HOW is it possible that it was kept secret from me until today!?! i am generally not a huge sandwich fan. there is only so much you can do if you're a veggie between two pieces of bread. so when my friend (who is from Berkeley) suggested we go there this afternoon i hesitatingly said....ok.
impressed by the wall of vegetarian options, i ordered the Sophie's choice on toasted wheat (i will now refer to as Isabel's choice) which consisted of portabella mushrooms, red peppers, some delish mayo, a prefect amount of munster cheese and some other stuff i can't remember. Let's just say it may have been the best freaking sandwich i have ever tasted (maybe only aside from panini in italy). Juan advised us to be brave and try them each on future visits. he told me he really takes pride in the veggie menu, which of course i totally appreciate. and they are very affordably priced to fit your fun-employment minded budgets! i know you won't be disappointed.
What you want in a sandwich spot! Some quick wit and attitude to wake you up before you head back to work!
I LOVE sammies, what I love more are good sammies....
This place has some really tasty ones. It's a super small place, but man do they make a mean sub. Minus a star for them being cash only, who carries cash now a days??!?
Food: Good
Atmosphere: Owner was funny, but put off by his loudness/cockiness at first
Price: Fair/Poor
One Word: Eh.
Will I go back? Maybe. Not a ton of other sandwich places around 16th and Mission, right?
very impressive.
i tried the pastrami at the recommendation of both of the delightful women behind the counter at this hole in the wall. the new yorker in me screamed "get something else, this place isnt italian or jewish," but that guys an asshole, so i didnt listen to him.
all told, it was pretty solid. the pastrami was all right, and the price was reasonable considering that the portion, especially the meat, was massive. the bread was good too...lightly toasted might be even better.
whatever you call it...sandwich, hero, sub, grinder, hoagie, sando, sammie...this city generally comes up short. ive long said that san francisco, while one of the greatest food cities on earth, does a terrible job with simple foods like pizza, wings, and sandwiches.
this is the first sand spot ive tried in san francisco where ive been completely satisfied. ive only been once, though, and i also have yet to try ikes, so i cant in good conscience hand out 5 stars...yet.
I had had a turkey sandwich from here at a small catered event and wasn't impressed. It was good, but not 5 star good or even 4 star good. However, I decided to give it another shot.
This place is just adorable. The shop is teeny-tiny, and, as far as I could tell, it's entirely family run. The cashier today was an adorable little boy who kept on making mistakes, which his father quickly corrected. Too cute. I spent a little too long waiting in line, but they did make the sandwiches pretty quickly, and everyone was super nice and friendly.
I got a Sophie's Delight, which was excellent. Whoever Sophie is must be really delighted that they named this sandwich after her. Portabellos and Muenster make an awesome combination, and the basil just makes it perfect.
I went to this place today for lunch after reading all the wonderful reviews from fellow yelpers. I ordered the 'Sophie's choice' as many yelpers had recommended it and I must say it was just delicious. The bread was well toasted and the smell of fresh basil was awesome. there was some kinda mayo/sauce that made the sandwich moist and tasty.
It is a tiny hole in the wall kinda place but the people are friendly and nice. I cant wait to go back there again and try their other sandwiches.
SO friendly, SO pleasant, SO tasty, SO quick, and it was SO cheap!
What a great little place! Delicious sandwiches. Take it out to nearby Dolores park on a sunny day and enjoy!
Another place i have been coming to for more than 10 years!!! The service is friendly and fast, the portions healthy and the sandwiches SUPERB!!! i would say this is the best sandwich shop in SF.
it inspires me to open one of my own!
my fav is the roasted eggplant! YUMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yum, I say...Yum!!!
I had a short gig up in the city right near the BART station. I walked past this place for 4 days making note of the constant traffic that came in and out of this spot.
Based on the good vibe I got when I walked by and staff recommendations I thought I would grab a sandwich.
The Reuben sandwich is one of may favorite meat packs and it is very possible to screw this one up.
Lemme tell ya' it was a warm buttery more than enough meat GOOD! I couldn't eat the entire sandwich in one sitting and sadly placed the leftovers in the fridge. I know - risky and kinda gross for some folks, but I don't like to waste good food. It held up! Yah! Pastrami is great...I'll try the Sophia's delight soon.
The menu has a great selection and includes some love for the strictly veggie folks. Haven't tried these yet.
The guy behind the counter, who I assume is the owner was funny as hell. He mixed it up with some Spanish, English and Spanglish, chatted with the regulars, and cooed at the baby. He's connected to the community, which I love. It was all good. Tiny space, I think there was only two tables available to sit down at.
This warrants a special BART trip to SF for sandwiches for sure. Hmmmm...maybe today!
Ok, so I have now eaten my way through their entire veggie section.....and WOW! I mean, when I eat these sammies I think being a vegetarian might not be so bad....well, then I remember my LOVE of bacon, but honestly, I love Sophie's Delight....
I plan on eating my way through the carnivorous selection, so stay tuned

this place is such a gem. Today I was getting ready for a surprise birthday fishing expedition and we wanted deli sandwiches so bad, so I yelped deli near my house, and I found this place. So i walked over to get sandwiches and was immediately greeted and asked for my order. The women behind the counter was so sweet! I told her about all her good yelp reviews and she introduced me to her family there, her mom and her brother, and tlod me that they had been a mom and pop since 1978!!!!!!!!
I support independent places like this in general, but they totally made a lifer out of me. Everyone was so very sweet, and while I was waiting for my sandwiches to come out the old women behind the counter gave me a cookie in a napkin. On the way out they all blew kisses and said "nice to meet you"
These ladies are truly inspiring! I wish there were more people in the world that were as truly gracious as these women. They made my day, and btw the sandwich was outstanding.
I was meeting some people in Oakland and decided to pick up a sandwich on the way to BART. I got the sandwich of the week and it was pretty good. The people here are very friendly but the sandwiches are so complicated that they take a while for them to make. They were out of rolls and that's OK except that the sandwich they made for me was a little soggy and it soaked through the bread.
I'll give this place another try if I can ever figure out their hours. Seriously, why is a sandwich place open at 6:30 in the morning? If they opened at 8 am they'd still get people on their way to work and they could stay open till 6:30 in the evening instead of 5:00 and get some dinner business. The hours are bizarre.
Was not in the mood for the usual heavy Mexican food lunch during my lunch hour in the Mission. I've passed this place plenty of times, and it usually has a line out the door so I decided to try it out.
I would've given them a four but the initial rudeness of the lady behind the counter lost it a star. At first I was a little put off by the lady behind the counter barking at me in Spanish. Yeah, I'm Mexican and don't speak a word of Spanish. Sue me. Once I told her I didn't speak Spanish she spoke in English and progressively became less rude.
I ordered a turkey breast sandwich with cheese on wheat bread. The first bite was surprisingly delicious, like really really good delicious.
I had a bite of my friend's oven roasted chicken breast hot sandwich, and WOW. So. damn. good!
So yeah, of course I'll be back. Rude service? Eh, everyone has their bad days. Right?
I come here 1-2 times a week because I work in the Mission. I LOVE everything about this place--the tasty ingredients, the prices, the Dirty's potato chips, the guy behind the counter...(call me)
The clincher for me is the array of flavored mayos: sundried tomato, chipotle, pesto, garlic, aoli, whatever. If it's a fatty sauce-- I want it.
As of this week they have a new sandwich. I tried it, loved it (of course)...the Southwestern Veggie Burger. I told my man behind the counter that if I liked it I would spread the word; when you make sandwiches like that, your wish is my command.
I am OBSESSED with the veggie sandwiches from this place, particularly the "Sophie's Delight." I have often gone into work late or left early literally JUST so that I can go to the Sandwich Place to feed my cravings. Ridiculously good.
The place is run a big extended family and is a neighborhood staple. They know the kids who live around here and I've seen them give food to people on credit when they can't afford it. I.e., not only do they make amazing sandwiches, they're good people.
The people who complain about the area need to chill out. Yeah it's not the Marina, but I live a block and a half from the Sandwich Place and I promise you, you do not need a gun to come down here.
introduced by a friend, this place is pretty damn good at decent prices. the service is great and the sandwiches are great. i had the pastrami, but i wish i had tried the sandwich of the week--it was some kind of bread with dun dried tomatoes, slices of hame, melted jack cheese and whatever.
and get a giant. it's pretty fucking big.
would definitely go here again!
I went to the Cosmetology school a couple of building away from this place and i always noticed it was busy. So one day for lunch i went in and bump into this funny guy his name was Juan! and boy can he make you laugh! i then ordered a Juan Mariachi sandwhich which is a chicken sandwhich with the mixture of a fajita? any who it turned out to be my FAVORITE!! YOu should come over and see juan! He makes the best ICE COFFEES too! tell him Silvia says Hi!
This place is the best. Amazing sandwiches whether you want them more on the greasier side or more fresh. I also just discovered the amazing salad deal. A small salad comes with tons of stuff including big slices of avocado and it's only $3.00! The soups are all delicious too. Try the clam chowder and vegetarian chili. The soups are $4.00 for a small.
The owner's jokes and friendliness make my day everytime. If you are in a rush you can call in your order because this place gets really crowded around lunch time.
A peculiar establishment, this is. How can a delicious steak sandwich be found in the rectum of the Mission District? A mystery to be sure.
Read closely: parking is challenging so either take a bus/BART, or do a drive by with a buddy. Bring cash. During lunch it can get busy, so you can call ahead for convenience. Some delicious sandwiches here. Some days have certain special sandwiches.
And now the fine print. In layman's terms, the neighborhood is teaming with disease, germs, drugs, and crime. Please don't stay in this area long (unless you are sufficiently armed) and don't bring children. "Rustic diehards" will flame me but I know some inside info on the area and have been familiar with the area since the early 80's----and it's not getting better.
Now to the food. When you enter and see a hispanic, over-friendly, metrosexual-like male who talks a lot, I will allow him to take my order, BUT not to make my food. He has a penchant for using his hands on the phone, the cash and cash register, and then directly onto the food----without washing. In this neighborhood of questionable hygiene, how can a food server act in such a manner? This goes beyond "ignorance is bliss". Me, I'd rather not take the chance. Order from one of the friendly ladies.
I recommend the Al Pachino and the steak sandwich (ask for the jalapenos and/or peppercini on this one). You've been warned.
I like this sandwich shop and have been going there a few years. I've seen what happens to small businesses in this neighborhood, and I don't think people appreciate how good they had it until a place closes.
They have a guy bake their bread fresh daily and use organic vegetables in their sandwiches. It's true not every sandwich they make turns out exactly the same depending on who makes it, but that's for factory assembly lines and fast food.
It's the kind of place where if you go there every so often, they remember you, and what kind of sandwich you like. There's just not that many old school sandwich places around anymore and this place specializes in that and does it well. Their hot dogs are pretty good too. We're lucky to have this place in the Mission still.
Sophie's Delight is really a delight, winning over a carnivore like me. The potato salad is straightforward, yet still pretty delicious.
Thanks yelp! Having worked in the area for years I was desperate to find a decent sammich. And like other reviewers, I had passed by this place a thousand times without ever knowing it was there (which makes sense given its locaiton and small size). Even when it appeared in a search I struggled to believe not just that it was good but that it was at the listed address. It couldn't have been more than a month of disbelief and a bit of trepidation (seriously, do you know where this place is?) before I ventured in. Even then, partly because I still didn't see it and also because of the scene on the street in front, I almost walked by. But I am oh so glad I stopped in.
My sandwich was HUGE. I basically never have any leftovers of anything but each half of this sandwich was a lunch. Plus with it being a small place and the sandwich being made right in front of me, I was able to control the quantity of each topping which was nice. And, as people have said, the owner and staff were very friendly. In terms of quality, everything seemed fresh and it all tasted good. I will definitely return!
i was super excited when i started temping in the mission because of all the great food options in the area. one day for lunch, i decided to do a blanket search for "take-out" and "$" to see what i would find. the sandwich place popped up, and i wasn't at all disappointed with the results.
i ordered a steak milanesa (grilled steak with chipotle mayonnaise). it was fantastic. the bread was soft and crispy. the steak was tender and flavorful. the best part is that the chipotle mayonnaise (spicy) is actually melted into the middle of the bread. so you don't actually begin to taste the sweetness of it until you have started chewing.
my order took a bit long (it's a hot sandwich), but i have no complaints. great, hearty sandwich for $7. yes, please.
The Sandwich Place is your friend.
I've been fed by Juan, his wife, and co-workers for over 2 long years now.
I can't stress enough how good this place really is.
First off, they have weekly specials that make my nipples hard. Beware! Specially that Al Paccino sub. Their very own Italian oven roast beef with pepperoncini, melted Provolone cheese, fresh greens, balsamic vinegar and E.V.O.O. Sexyness all over your face.
Also, one of the only places where I can appease my Argentinean hunger for a MILANESA sandwich. They dish out both chicken and steak.
Do your digestive system a favor and try one.
In all seriousness, this place can do no evil. Salads, sandwiches, and some of the best fair-trade coffee u'll wake up to. They aced it all. Their soups are amazing too (I'm lookin' at you, split pea). oh! Mission vegetarian hipsters will find enough variety in the selection to keep them interested.
Fawk. I'm gettin' hungry already.
only complaint would be (if anything at all) their operating hours. They close at 5 pm. Boohoohoo!
Nice little, cheap eats place with an owner who goes the extra mile for good service.
Location convenient to transit, but waay too many unsavory characters laying in the surrounding landscape.
That's ok cuz it helps keep the prices down, just wear your cow field wading boots...
keys lunch cheapeats breakfast
Their sandwiches are fairly basic, Subway-like in their bread roll and being able to view it being made behind the glass. But their variety sets them apart. There are more than a couple of veggie choices, and they feature different types of mayo to give it that extra kick. In short, the sandwiches are extremely cheap, yet fresh and filling. Their major shortcoming is in their limited hours.
You've passed by it many times, but you'd never even realized it was there. Someone else hit the nail on the head--with such a varied menu, this place would undoubtedly blow up if they set up shop a block away on Valencia.
This place always had that "I'll eat it if you eat it, first" idea attached to it for me. Total hole in the wall, nondescript awning, seedy surroundings - qualities that, especially in the Mission, (as I should really know by now, having grown up in the area) generally point to tasty food.
So, someone wanted a sandwich and was due for a break. We keep menus in a file so that we can order ahead of time, sparing our wee 30 minute window from waiting with hunger pains. The Sandwich Place menu found itself on the counter and we were all pretty shocked to see the broad span of options. You've got your standard salami and american cheese mixed in with the homemade veggie burgers that are commonplace on Valencia, but less frequent one block east.
We ordered five sandwiches and because it was One of Those Days, I volunteered myself to Get the Hell Out of There for a few to enjoy the fresh (debatable) air and steal a few bites from each one to allow the Yelp readers a fair and balanced review (not because I was hungry, or dishonest, or taking more than my fair share, or just honestly curious, or impatient, or indecisive).
The "inside" of this place hailing sandwiches (that apparently has decent soup, too!) is consistent with the outside - no frills, just some counter space, and a clear view of ingredients being piled on top of one another, heated, sliced, etc. When hangry (hungry+angry), I can become a bit demanding and the plexiglass (I hope the guy that installed all of the bullet-proof glass has a monopoly on Mission St. because he either is already, or ought to be making a killing) can present problems with my temper as I squeal out to the poor guy making a sandwich that could be mine (but 9 times out of 10 isn't) that "I DON'T WANT MAYO!!!! JUST MUSTARD!!!! EXTRA ONIONS!!!" Generally, I retract back to my corner upon hearing that this sandwich is for someone ELSE (who is not as controlling and obnoxious, I'm sure) and that, YES, my order is being prepared as specified in the phone order and will be ready shortly.
The guy that works the counter (owner? manager? just all-around nice guy?) is amusing and always has something to say, and never ceases to make me chuckle my plummeting-insulin laugh.
The sandwiches are huge and inexpensive, always tasty, and remind me of my school days spent living off of Cala sandwich meal-deals. Part of their beauty is that they aren't the sandwiches Frjtz is serving (which is not a negative for either business, I love me some Frjtz, too!) , but certainly leaps and bounds above what one might find in the refrigerated section of Walgreens.
Sandwiches are such a no-brainer when one thinks of quick "American" food, but fewer places than I would have anticipated actually deliver a simple, enormous, cheap tower of stuff between slices. Extra points go to the diverse menu that can feed our entire store, each person with a favorite, but eager to try everything else on the menu.
If you opt for the breakfast sandwich with egg and cheese, be sure to also opt for the sun-dried tomato mayo and jalapenos. You won't shit 'til dinner, but you won't want to eat 'til dinner either, so it's pretty much a tradeoff. As an added bonus, you'll also be able to hear your arteries hardening.
Call ahead. Just do it.
Update 11/07/06: I fricking love the owner. Seriously. He's so darn great, like the uncle who'd send you $50 for your birthday when everyone else sent you $20! I think his name is Oscar, but he's never a grouch.
Update 3/27/07: Um, his name is Juan. And all orders over $20 include free delivery!
Sophie's Delight made me dance it was so good.
P.S. Here it is! http://maps.google.com...
Extremely friendly staff, cramped but clean environment AWESOME sandwiches, i love how they use micro greens instead of empty calorie and water lettuce .
I recommend the Al Pachino Special
I wrote my last review of this 'place' just about one year and a month ago. The Sandwich Place gets a couple extra stars from me now. It is one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had in this city. I think what did it for me today was the soft bread it was on, it completely made the sammie. Well, the pastrami was pretty freaking good, too. And I ordered everything on it, which I don't normally do with the mustard and pepper contingent, but hot damn, what a great sandwich. This is definitely The Place to be. So good.

07/03/08 (Thursday):
I returned here for lunch today because I had to run an errand.
This time I ordered the "Al Pacino." This was good and much better than their pastrami sandwich from before.
It was on a french roll with hot roast beef and assorted greens. I really liked the fact that they didn't just use lettuce, but various greens because it made it tastier. It also included jalapenos and onions. I think I still have heartburn from the jalapenos.
Again, the "guy with the glasses" was there and just as friendly as from before. I forgot to mention the grandma from last time, but she was also there handling the cash register. The grandma was really nice also. I had trouble holding my wallet, sandwich and soda before I left, but she told me to take a second to put my wallet in my pocket before I left. Always a nice touch when you can tell the owners care about their customer's well-being.
Try the "Al Pacino" if you're looking for a tasty, hot roast beef sandwich.

I'd give them 5 stars, but their hours are tight on the weekends, which is when I would go there the most. The guy who runs the place is super cool, as are most of the folks that work there.
Great quality sandwiches that are huge and really, really tasty. Interesting specials too, like shredded italian beef with provolone and sundried tomato mayo, salad greens, etc. And they're breakfast sandwiches are insanely good, but super rich.
The ingredients they use really sets them apart, even if it's on one of the crappiest blocks in the Mission. If they moved their digs even one block to Valencia, their business would explode - it's that good. In the meantime, a quick stop off the 16th BART and they're right across the street.
A rare true San Francisco hidden gem! I probably walked past this place 100 times before I read about it on yelp and decided to check it out. I was immediately struck by the surprising number of vegetarian options for a hole-in-the-wall looking place, and the ingredients are very high quality, except as someone else mentioned, the bread is not exceptional. The people who work there are really friendly, and recognized me on my second visit. The big drawback is that there's no seating, which isn't a problem for me because I live two blocks away, but I guess picnicking on the BART plaza probably isn't most people's idea of a good time.
It's about the same price as a burrito, but won't leave you with that feeling of having swallowed a brick.
OK, first time here, he sells my sandwich to someone else...many apologies later he promises to make me happy. I ask for avo and am charged an extra buck. So, $8 sandwich, yummy but nothing extraordinary, no love for making me wait...not sure I'll be back.
Mmm tasty! I got the basic veggie sandwich (1st one on the wall) and it was really good! Good whole-wheat-ish bread, fresh fillings and flavor. Yum! I will definitely go back - it's nice to have a local version of Subway. :) BTW, this sandwich wasn't greasy at all and tasted very fresh and healthy (avocado, the good fat).
This has probably been mentioned, but since I missed it - there are no tables inside and there are 2 small tables outside. Since I am always cold, this doesn't help me. Take a seat and catch the 16th & Mission action!
I honestly don't know why this place has been getting rave reviews lately. This place sucks.
Skimpy portions, overpriced, and polite, but rushed service. When I went there, the sandwiches were so thin you can almost see through them !
Take your 7 dollars and go down to the McDonald's a few doors down - you'll be much better off.
